  • This is a beautiful machine that has seen little or no use in its 100 years of existence, after giving it the full spar treatment, I had to make videos for the owner who had covid, so it was a great opportunity to share it with anyone else who needs so assistance.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this instruction video/ your camera angles are spot on! I’m new to these beautiful old Treadle machines. I just bought a Singer #27 model which is going to take some work before it’s in good running condition. I’ve been watching a lot of channels dealing with restoring these machines, there’s much more information on line than I even hoped for/ but you really knocked it out of the park😅(home run). 🏆

A good tip , always unlock your stop motion knob on the hand wheel before putting away , so next time you go to put the belt on its not moving the needle while turning the wheel to install the belt ....just something to consider...

Great instruction and camera work! This is the info I need to get started using my treadle machine including your method of starting & stopping stitching. I liked that you showed your foot positions to operate the treadle too. Thank you!

    Wonderful video, but i saw two things that could be improved;
    1) the little hole beside front of shuttle race needs packed w felt and then that felt saturated w oil to reduce wear on shuttle. This makes a big difference in lifetime of a shuttle.
    2) the treadle needs oiled. Its squeeking big time.

Thank you, yes you are absolutely correct.
This video was made on a customers machine, for a customer that had recently purchased it, the video was originally for her, but it is much better to share. The two points you mentioned were addressed before leaving. Well spotted. 👍🏻

Many thanks. The direction of the thread out of the bobbin into the shuttle, was very helpful. As was how to adjust the tension. I am amazed how little tension (upper/lower) is required to make the perfect lock stitch according to the original adjusters manual for SInger.

I love the action of the bobbin winder, a really pretty piece of engineering. The decals on this one are lovely, I have the one with the Greek key design made in 1899.

Just purchased a Singer 27 treadle at an auction for $57 US. Thank you for your informative video. I got to looking at your other videos and have tote bag envy. Very creative. We have a couple of machines that can handle heavier canvas but nothing like "Big Tony"....more envy. Happy New Year from Reno, Nevada, USA.

I followed you exactly, loading the shuttle and then inserting. I threaded the top and then pulled the thread through. After hours cleaning my beautiful machine the moment came to test sew. Nothing, the first stitch seems to almost catch but after that not a single stitch. The only thing I didn’t clean was the feed dog area. I will attack that tomorrow but I don’t think that’s it. The feed dogs do move.

I noticed the bobbin carrier is like mine the old version that can snag the bobbin thread in the back of the diagonal slot of the bobbin case.
Later versions had a finger in the carrier to stop this snag, I have modified mine with a bit of wire.
This was on a 1891 28K UK machine.
The other odd snag I was getting was from a burr on the bobbin tension screw, it just caused a malformed stitch with extra thread in the lock stitch.
I still have suture stitch scissors they are 50y old now.

You have an example, your green machine has the newer shuttle holder with the extra finger at the back
      ua-cam.com/video/e78ixbEy4bA/v-deo.html
I don't do FB or any other, you do the comparison and maybe add a YT to help others if they are getting the random snag on the older carriers, it seems to happen as you stop and start, I took the slidrs off and ran my old 28k hand wind machine slowly to see it happen. I was using very thin thread, as the top thread drags the lower thread forwards and then backward as the shuttle passes the needle and starts to return and if the long curved part of the tension spring does not trap the bottom thread and keep it ontop of the shuttle the lower thread loops under and enters the slot at the back of the shuttle.
I bent my long curved spring so that it just touches the shuttle case, I guess over the years people must have used their fingernail to remove the shuttle causing it to be slack.
The metal finger modification seems to guide the bottom thread to stop this from happening
Yesterday I watched a few of your other videos, very nice colour changes for the 201 I also have cast iron and aluminium (in black) both still in factory almost new condition.
      all the best

@@sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746 I do not normally upload YT, however here is how I fixed my machine by bending the long spring so that it traps the bottom thread, if I had not done this then the top thread occasionally drags the bottom thread in the slit at the rear of the shuttle.
      ua-cam.com/video/Fu7J0lnZNlg/v-deo.html
This is an unlisted video just for you feel free to download and reuse or you might like to show both your machines and the possible thread snags that has nothing to do with adjusting tension settings.
I do not know when Singer made the modification to the shuttle carrier to add the extra finger, I have seen both types for sale on Ebay.
I knew about it because I have a few vibrating shuttle machines. I set them up for my wife to use with different thread or foot attachments to do zigzag, ruffling etc. so she just uses a different machine that are sometimes in a different room.
      all the best
BTW I went diving in the Orkneys on the German fleet in Scapa flow back in 1985
Later I did my RYA costal skipper qualifications on a trip from Largs to St Kilda in the west of Scotland.

@@sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746 Ok just got 15x1 needles, it's a liitle shorter than the one that came with the machine. I tried it and it works. I was worried it might break but it didn't. The old needle i think is for leather or some sort of thick material. Thanks a bunch for replying🤗.
