Val Verde Broadcasting Don’t blame it on the sunshine. Don’t blame it on the moonlight. Don’t blame it on the goodtimes... ...Blame it on boogie. Yep, played it straight n ‘Tron moved’ you at the last minute. Boom.
It was a proud day in my adulthood when I finally got the balls to stand up to my older brothers and say that Superman 3 is my favourite Superman. Waiting for a good time to break the news that The Temple of Doom is my favourite Indiana Jones as it was the one I enjoyed most as a kid... but I’m not sure there ready for that bombshell just yet.
Superman 2 would actually be greatly improved by Terence Stamp going full Cockney (rather than the bits that trickle out), and yelling "Faaaacking Supermaaaan!!!!!"
Donner cut is better 1.Jor-El scenes reinstated 2.Tone is in line with the first film, more cohesive 3. Better effects, editing, the battle in metropolis is far superior in the Donner Cut 4. Given the budget and the time this cut was produced, it’s an amazing feat that it turned out as well as it did 5. Also unless you’ve got old DVDs or the blu ray box set, it’s almost impossible to find a copy of a stand alone version of the theatrical cut 6. John Williams score is back, ken Thorne while great, his mix of the theme of two always sounded tinny and cheap Great work as always guys, can’t wait for a it ain’t broke of Superman III, so underrated, also I don’t hate the theatrical cut, I appreciate it and actually prefer the theatrical cuts ending to the Donner
The Lester cut for me. It's just a more entertaining film, silly humour or not. There's a reason why people cite it as their favourite, so that shouldn't be ignored. The Donner cut is unfinished, sure, but it's not as satisfying and lacks that feelgood factor.
Lester's works as your classic Sunday afternoon escape, which is why it's so loved (along with 3), but I do wonder what Donner was going for with the bleak-ness. I guess he really wanted to test this icon of hope. It would be curious to live in a world with a Donner S2 and maybe a Donner S3 (or one that was tonally consistent with D).
I was one of those staunch Superman fans on the Superman Cinema message board, dreaming about a Donner Cut for years. But it's fair to say that it actually made you realise just how good the Richard Lester cut was. Unfairly lamented, Lester's cut is more comic book based and a better revelation between Lois and Clark too. That Alleyway change too is still the best transition in any Superman film all those years later. The only issue I have with the theatrical is the stupid comedy but take that out and you've got yourself, one hell of a film. However, Donners cut is more a missed opportunity as the editing nor the new effects for Superman 2 isn't great. I'm sure had it been completed by Donner back in the day, then it would have been awesome.
Neither version of Superman II is perfect, but I am happy with both the versions that we have. I think both versions are good movies, but neither are as good as the first movie. I grateful for what we have. The strangest thing is that the 1970's/1980's Superman/Supergirl series have multiple cuts of each film. On par with Star Wars and Blade Runner with the amount of different versions.
The Blade Runner approach is def the better in release, just put all cuts in one boxset, rather than the Star Wars approach of not allowing people to buy the previous cuts in HD.
I just don’t think there’s a winner here. Lester’s film is complete but tonally all over the place. Donner’s film has potential to be superior but it’s cobbled together on the cheap
Honestly that is a myth. Lesters version is more duct taped together than Donners. Donners cut has more Donner footage than Lester does Lester footage. It is the Leater cut that LITERALLY reshot scenes on the cheap to save $$. There is one screen test scene. And the scene works much better than Lesters. If u really dig into the films and u realize who shot what the fact is Lester shot a ton of scenes with made up non essential characters that are useless. Cops talking about diner menus, arm wrestling with a nobody, forgettable terrorists.
Well it would possibly be the Donner version had he been allowed to finish it, but I dont have a problem with the Lester cut and loved it when I was a kid.
It’s a mixed bag. The Lester cut does some things better, the Donner cut, others. If I had to choose, I would go with the Theatrical cut. Would love to see a hybrid cut taking the best scenes from both and combing them.
Great vid lads, thanks. Oh, and Hey I know another UA-camr who is a mad fan (if somewhat over-keen on Chris Reeve) of these films, he's called ....oh wait... perhaps not. Yeah, forget it.
Have to say, I think the Lester cut is superior, if only in that it is clearly a finished movie. The Donner Cut, while nice that it's out there, is a more a work in progress than a finished product. I preferer the extended versions of Superman the Movie anyway - beautiful film. Also, am I missing something re: Oliver Harper? Was there a massive fall-out or something?
Yeah, we have cut all ties with him personally and professionally. We can't really talk about it publicly because there are potential legal entanglements that may arise. Anyway, glad you found us, hope you enjoy our videos! -R
I'd have to say Lester, it's good that we have the donner version but it's a bit of a mess and could do with another re-edit with a better sound mix. There's better fan edits online which combine both i.e. Solutron
I think the Lester version is creatively subpar (that fight in the Fortress is too silly even for a comic book film), but it is technically better than the Donner cut of II. It is a pity bordering on tragedy we never got Donner's intact cut of Superman II, but I do enjoy his cut. Here's hoping, just for completion's sake, we get the three hour tv cut of Superman II
I compare the Donner cut to Michael Jackson's "This Is It". And what i mean by that is that, "This Is It" wasn't really the concert. It was for us to get an idea of what would've been if he actually made the concert. It was a "what if". To me "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut" is like that. Is a "what if". Is for us to get an idea of what kind of movie we would've gotten if Donner would've finish it. So i feel is unfair when people nitpick it. Is obviously an incomplete cut. We're watching something that was never meant to be seen. While i prefer Donner's cut, to me the official cut is still the theatrical cut. That's the one is meant to be canon. But the Donner cut is still my favorite cut. The editing, sound etc, that it doesn't matter. The theatrical cut, i have a theory, if Lester would've at least stayed as faithful as possible to that script that Donner was filming and just finish what was missing, maybe people wouldn't be so hard on him. But that's not what he did. He reshot a lot. And he added a lot of humor that felt out of place. Is more obvious in the third act. While Superman is fighting the villains, everyone is going on with their lives like nothing is happening. The people coming out of the fast food and the lady "You forgot your change" the guy talking in the phone "Sound? What sound?" The ice cream thing, the guy with the wig. "Your hair? What about mine?" The other guy on the phone, "Yeah, yeah, hahaha". If i see Superman fighting 3 Kryptonians i would look up. It wasn't funny. It took me out of the movie. It felt out of place. I still prefer the first film over the second one. Funny cause Ilya Salkind says that the campiness was not intentional. That it was gonna go in a minute. That Donner is exagerating. But when you see the second film all the stuff Donner didn't do, and Superman III, is obvious that Donner is telling the true.
Lester insisted on re-shooting parts, as well as new stuff, as it was the only way the DGA would let him be credited. The Salkinds just desperate to get the film finished, agreed. He did approach Superman differently, bringing in a new cinematographer to shoot in a square comic book panel way, rather than the wide vistas of Superman 1. The slapstick humour is also very similar to what he did with The Three Musketeers, a novel not known for it's outright clowning around, also for The Salkinds. It is worth remembering that Lester was on the set on S1, and had up-close experience of how Donner was doing it, due to him being hired as a mediator between D and The Salkinds. So he was involved with the project, but choose to do things differently.
I get why people say the Donner cut isnt finished, *but it is every bit as finished as the theatrical. Thats just a fact.* Both versions mix and match. Lesters drastically changed things for the worse. They literally filmed non sensical scenes on the cheap to fill in time. Donners is the real story with Lesters less intimidating fight scenes added in because Donner never shot some of em. Donners cut is more Donner footage than Lesters is Lester footage. The Donner cut isnt complete narrative is kinda BS. Its more complete than Lesters.
In hindsight, I think the Richard Donner Cut was made for the benefit of fan editors, who obviously don't have to worry about studio mandates, the DGA and what percentage of material in the edit must be shot by whom to get full director's credit. The best version of Superman II exists somewhere in the middle.
As well as the Snyder cut imo we need a WB hybrid cut of supes 2 I have attempted it and can get it around 2 hours with a blending of both cuts of footage
29:17 The thing is, back in 1980 people didn't take these things so seriously. Of course there are logic gaps and plot holes. But at the end of the day it was a colourful, superhero movie. People just enjoyed the ride and had fun. Also back then the special effects were an attraction in themselves - seeing Superman fly and fight on screen like that just wasn't possible before.
An important thing to remember about the Lester Superman II is, the Salkinds had to show without a shadow of a doubt that he shot more than 50% of the movie, so that Richard Donner wouldn't be able to receive credit. (And more importantly, the salary he was owed for completing the second film.) So I think the weird tonal shift and visual gags are intentionally glaring. IMO, the best version of Superman II would have a combo of footage of both films. Bring in the things from Lester's film that work, like the Paris opening, but keep the Jor-El storyline that forms the emotional backbone of the Donner Cut. (And don't spin the world back *again*, there's got to be a better way to reverse the damage lol)
I think the Snyder Cut is another case of fans thinking they want something when it turns out they don't. Justice League seems to be a simple plot by design rather than studio interference. The whole 2 part story was seemingly scraped in pre production. The cut will just have a different score and colour grading. I think any additional/alternate footage by Snyder will contain the characterisation and tone people had an issue with in BVS and have no real impact on the plot and just pad it out
But 2 would have had them facing off against Darkseid. It was always built towards that. Even when they decided not to film 2, I think the seeds of the arrival of Darkseid poss were filmed, as that was the intent. There's also Superman's Black costume, worn on set, that never turned up in the released film.
One of the biggest problems with Donner's Cut is that it ends with the same 'turning back time' scene as part 1. I know this was the original intent, but it doesn't make sense because all versions of Superman TM have that same ending. You can't have the same ending twice. If we had a version of Superman TM with a different ending then it would be ok. I know there was that Selutron guy who tried to make a complete cut years ago.
You have to understand that yes Reeve turns back time in two films but the *Superman character* does it ONCE. Its simple when u start part 2, watch it as tho lois never died in part 1. When u dig in turning the world back is way better in 2 as intended. Moving the ending to part 1 works for STM but everything falls into place for that to end 2. In a nutshell STM condensed both films down to 1 by moving the ending but that screwed up the whole jor el lesson w human history etc.
I always say this about this debate: one is a completed film the other is an editing experiment in ‘what if’. That said, I do prefer the tone of Donner.
It really isnt though. The Lester cut is held together by duct tape much more so than the Lester version. Honestly its pretty obvious to me the people that prefer the Lester cut juat arent used to the change and arent that familiar with who shot what. One scene of a screen test is no big deal. Lester has a ton of mixed and matched footage made on tbe cheap. Thats literally why Lester got the job, to be cost effective by shooting pointless scenes that require no spec effects to fill in the run time
Instead of going back to the well with Batman, I wish WB/DC would pull something out of left field. How about Doctor Fate, for instance. Also in Superman 2, Clark going back to get revenge on the bully in the diner is bullshit.
Also poor guy never attacked Clark, as Supes erased that happening. So now it's Superman beats up random stranger. Stick that on the front page of The Daily Planet!
