As someone who has loved and defended this movie all my life, it's great reading comments like those below that show people don't buy into the false hate this movie gets. The haters who troll this movie are not gonna get a green card with those attitudes anymore. So don't let anyone's negative attitude turn your slime pink!
I don't know what's more remarkable; the fact that 2016, the proposed "end of the world" was when that unspeakable reboot came out, or the fact that Jason Reitman is not only at the birthday party, quoting his dad on the Ghostbusters being full of crap, but ultimately being the one to save the franchise with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Save the franchise? Not even close. For background, Jason's previous five films (2011's "Young Adult", 2013's "Labor Day", 2014's "Men, Women and Children", and 2018's "Tully" and "The Front Runner") all underperformed commercially, and "Afterlife" looks set to continue his "losing streak", considering what the film's up against, both in terms of the films released in the same time period AND the costs of the film. A film's budget (also called the "PRODUCTION budget") includes all costs relating to its development, production, and post-production, but production costs don't cover distribution and marketing, which adds another $35 million or so on average. Also, consider that movie theaters get roughly half of the profits from ticket sales, with the studio and/or distributor getting the other half. Given "Afterlife" 's $75 million PRODUCTION budget, hypothetical advertising budgets of $35 million, $37.5 million, and $50 million would bring the total cost of the film to $110 million, $112.5 million, and $125 million, respectively. Also, there will be extra costs to move the film away from the worst months of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic (the idiomatic "elephant in the room"), which happened 4 times in total. In those scenarios (which ignore the costs of Covid-related delays), "Afterlife" would have to gross at least $220 million, $225 million, and $250 million at the worldwide box office, respectively, to break even and become a commercial success. Taking into account the costs of Covid-related delays, "Afterlife" would have to gross at least $275 million dollars to break even commercially and become a success. The 2016 female reboot just got a bad rap, simple as that. It did reasonably well with critics, and the ladies of the reboot even stated that they were huge fans of the 1984 original film. It closely followed the fundamentals of the 1984 original, while also allowing for room to stand out in its own right, and it had its own tributes to deceased original cast member Harold Ramis, who passed away in 2014. Harold's son Daniel has a cameo as a metalhead, and his likeness is used on a bust outside Erin Gilbert's office. Unfortunately, it got caught in the crossfire of controversy, especially with the political climate of 2016 and whatnot, along with outrage from fans of the original films, who labelled the reboot as "sacrilegious".
Ray and Winston: (sing) "If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?" Kids: (shout) "HE-MAN!!!" (chant) "He-Man! He-Man! He-Man!" Ray: (angrily) "Fine! But don't call us if He-Man can't battle ghosts or demon dogs or a 100-ft. marshmallow man!" (Both Ray and Winston leave in a huff).
Opening 20-30 mins of this movie is great. Venkman as talk show host, etc. Really great stuff that fits in with the first movie and expands on it. Once the Vigo story hits and the effects kick in, it kind of falls apart though and gets lost in an action/special effects movie.
I actually kind of blame Aykroyd. He loves all the sci-fi / effects stuff, but it's really the camaraderie and character stuff that made the first movie so good and it gets lost in the sequel.
I don't care how bad this movie is, I think it's really great. Bill Murray cracks me up as Prof. Peter Venkman, Dan Aykoryd is hilarious as Prof. Ray Stanz, Harold Ramis is a legend as Prof. Egon Spengler and Ernie Hudson is a comedian/2nd in command as Officer Winston Zeddemore
I felt so bad for Ray and Winston when i first watched Ghostbusters 2, still willing to do birthday party visits even though they are possibly making embarrassments of themselves

I love this movie to bits. The first one may be the best movie overall, but this one retains a special place in my heart, maybe because it's the first I saw in theaters back when I was 8 years old. I come back to it from time to time, it truly is a comfort movie ❤
i remember my mom taking me and my other siblings to see this in theaters when the movie came out.
I would of killed to see this on the big screen. I was lucky to see the original in cinemas for the 35th anniversary, but I'd love to see GB2 on the big screen. my favourite. Too young to go see them in the cinema, but not too young to of been utterly obsessed with ghostbusters in the early 90s
I had to rent a theater for $100 on one of my birthday's because no theater has the balls to ever show this one.
Saw afterlife last night and I thought it was a great movie so many Easter eggs and it just brought back memories!
7:31 I love the smile egon gave Dana 😂
Sigourney Weaver makes a great mother. Beware if you come after HER child!
And she is one herself, as she has a daughter named Charlotte (born in 1990) with husband Jim Simpson, and she is likely to become a grandmother too.
@@andrewbloom7637 He's talking about Aliens
@@chrispekel5709 I know that.
9:08 This part alone sounds like a movie plot. Love Ghosbusters 2.
Not as good as the first movie, but still 10 times better than every damn movie today
I love this opening pram scene.
4:58 love the transition!
Who you gonna call? HE MAN!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As someone who has loved and defended this movie all my life, it's great reading comments like those below that show people don't buy into the false hate this movie gets. The haters who troll this movie are not gonna get a green card with those attitudes anymore. So don't let anyone's negative attitude turn your slime pink!
3:38, behold! The director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Plus Ivan Reitman’s son lol
Unfortunately, it got caught in the crossfire of controversy, especially with the political climate of 2016 and whatnot, along with outrage from fans of the original films, who labelled the reboot as "sacrilegious".
as soon as dana picks up oscar and the theme music plays I get so pumped!
Ray and Winston: (sing) "If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?"
Kids: (shout) "HE-MAN!!!" (chant) "He-Man! He-Man! He-Man!"
Ray: (angrily) "Fine! But don't call us if He-Man can't battle ghosts or demon dogs or a 100-ft. marshmallow man!" (Both Ray and Winston leave in a huff).
Honest trailers fan
1:02 oh my, Oscar gets smashed against with the grocery bag 😂
I wish I had the Ghostbusters come to my birthday party forget he-man 😪
I felt so bad for Ray and Winston when i first watched Ghostbusters 2, still willing to do birthday party visits even though they are possibly making embarrassments of themselves
3:38 Jason: My dad says you guys are full of crap.
Also Jason: Directs Afterlife and Produces Frozen Empire, ultimately saving the franchise
I can't wait till it comes out!
The Ecto-1 car that was seen in the opening scene is coming back in Ghostbusters afterlife with a few upgrades: a gunner seat and a ghost trap on wheels. Now in Frozen Empire, it's been repainted and has a drone with a ghost trap on it.
Yep the R.T.V.
6:47 He so did that on purpose! Lmao! God I miss Egon! I just saw Afterlife and man it doesn’t feel the same without Harold Ramis.
⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️ 💀💀💀☠️☠️ R.I.P Harold Ramis!!!! Fans: 😭😭😭 No! Oh please God No!
Underrated sequel. The humor is a bit tamer, but other than that it has so much charme, great actors and chemistry. Todays lackluster and mediocre sequels just prove how good GB2 really is.
Lol Jason Reitman was cute back in 1989 and a little bit cheeky^^ And now he made the third one Ghostbusters - Afterlife, together with his Dad as Co-Producer.
It would've been cool if he'd also cameoed in Afterlife reprising his role.
9:14 her prediction was only off a few months from Lady Ghostbusters 2016 ...a true end of the world haunt of a movie
The moment the theme starts to kick in is cinematic gold. Just imagine how good that was for cinema audiences in 89, i bet they were cheering that moment. Pretty please let Frozen Empire start with the actual theme tune like the first two movies did.
After this movie it would be 32 years before we would see these guys again. Well, three of them, at least.
Great movie!
😊💞
Still the best Ghostbusters sequel. Afterlife and Frozen Empire are good movies, sure, but you just can't beat the first two Ghostbusters movies.
When that theme song kicks in..
12 dislikes, pretty much the whole Ghostbusters 2016 cast
This was really one of my favorites movies... regardless of what critics say.
Kid: (disappointed) "Oh, I thought it was gonna be He-Man!"
Ray: "Sorry, kid! He-Man couldn't make it!"

I like the foreshadowing at 5:35.
I never noticed until now when Egon was doing that experiment with people's emotions and had that guy wait for "marriage counseling" and he started to get pissed. Then later in film when they come to find out the slime feeds off of negative emotions. I wonder if that was planned?
Pretty sure it was. I mean the slime was the main plot point of the second film, so it’s pretty obvious they’re going to set it up in the first part of the movie.
3:37
And who would've thought the boy claiming that his father says they're full of crap would go on, decades later, to direct the sequel that would redeem the franchise.
3:33 so epic
Ah yes, taking an unlicenced nuclear accelerator into a kids birthday party.
*Egon:* Let's see what happens when we take away the puppy.
He is so lucky Dana didn't hear that.
" it's a river of slime"!!!
Been a while since I've seen the complete film, but the first ten minutes are very good and even outshine the original.
Watching this makes me feel good. Ive seen it so many times as a kid. Its like a comfort
Me too.
And I hate to say this, but I saw the second Ghostbusters before the first one.
I love that Venkman and Dana are married in GB: Afterlife.
They didn’t say that. You’re a morahn
It’s almost exclusively implied they’re married

The wedding rings 😁
"But not Venkman"
Literally 10 seconds later: "Does he ever mention me?"
I never understood why people have said for years that this is a rehash of the first film. It's not the same at all.

That sense of evil in the city is played off pretty well with all the people arguing in the beginning of the movie. Just barely noticing it.
Just a typical day in NYC.
