Excellent presentation and makes cutting a mat so accessible, thank you! The only difficult bit is converting fractions of an inch to decimals, do the halving and then converting back again to fractions makes me wonder why people stick with imperial measurements. Metric is so much easier!!!

Thank you for a full on masterclass in matting and framing. Something I’ve been considering for a long time, but unsure how to do it accurately, without wasting lots of time and mat to become proficient. I feel that I have learned enough to turn out an accurately cut window for my photos and mount them 👍

I got the compact cutter a few weeks back and finally figured how to use it. But this tutorial has just showed me how to dramatically save time drawing the cutout lines. I was taught to draw horizontal and vertical center lines and then measure out half the opening in each direction. Then draw the lines. This is a much better and faster way to do it - calculate the borders and then using the device itself to mark out the cut-off lines. And less prone to inaccuracy and errors. Thank you so much for that.

I have a Logan Matt Cutter that gets used once in a blue moon but still worth the investment as I use second hand frames. Really enjoyed the presentation from a chap who knows his business.

Excellent video by someone who knows what he's doing and, better yet, is truly adept at explaining it to others. I purchased this model of Logan mat cutter about 6 years ago and I've cut hundreds of mats with it. Very accurate, a pleasure to use, and high quality construction means it lasts. The mats cut with it are of professional level of quality if you follow instructions faithfully. I'm a skilled photographer but when it comes to manual dexterity I'm the kind of carpenter who measures the plywood five times and then cuts it in the wrong place. So if I can cut professional quality mats with this unit just about anyone can! The only real drawback to this model is that you can't use it to trim the excess off the 40” side of the board which you must do when you cut mats of 11x14" size such as used in this demonstration. That doesn't seem like a big deal until you try cutting a 40" line with a hand held straight edge...the doctor at the emergency room costs more than the Logan mat cutter that accommodates the 40" edge of a sheet of mat board! I know this from experience and if I had it to do again I'd opt for the larger model. Last but not least buy your cutter from B&H they are a great company to do business with!

Awesome tutorial. I have done a lot of mat cutting sort of self taught years age, i wish I had one of these hints and it would have been so much easier. Now i want to start matting the needle point that I’ve done and didn’t want to pay for the mounting. Now I’m going to do it myself. Thanks. Excellent instructor.😊

This was so interesting to have on in the background while I worked on arts and crafts! I picked up a good tip, only tape the artwork in on 2 of the 4 sides so it doesn’t crinkle in time!

What a really nice patient guy, ive learnt so much and has given me the confidence to try and make my own, the other thing I liked was there was no sales pitch like some other videos,, he told us straight that the cheap cutter version will do exactly the same job as dearer cutters, very impressed with video.

I do like my 305, for me, I mount between 2 and 10 prints a month, it’s a perfect bit of kit that doesn’t take up any room when packed away. I am the world’s most crack handed person at any crafts, even before I had an upper body condition making it worse, but even 8 got the hang of using my Logan. I think the guy covered absolutely everything and there were some very good questions. In all an excellent presentation and good videography that focused on the right things at the right time.

Dividing a fraction in half is easy, you simply double the denominator (bottom number). Half of 3/4 is 3/8, half of 7/16 is 7/32

Thanks for the information on cutting mats. I did pick up the basic kit of team system plus for doing the job for my low volume. One thing I did notice is on the taping of your picture to the mount with the T hinge. When I first started I used that method and it showed the imprint of the tape on the picture, and I ruined a few expensive prints because no one mentioned it might show through. Is there a way to prevent this? I had some super glossy prints that showed every imprint of the tape and was very distracting. I finally had to make the prints with a border to hang that way. Any suggestions are great! :-))

Regarding the weighted border issue (at 1:26:21 in this video), especially how thick will be the weighted border it's an endless debate. The most accurate calculation could be found in the following links. Unfortunately, the article is written in Romanian language but can be easily understood looking at the pictures. The drawings are clear and you don't even need to translate. However, the entire article can be translated, not perfect but good enough, by Google translate service.

if your tolerances for cutting a mat is 16ths of an inch you are working way too hard! I mean, what can possibly be in 1/16th of an inch of a photo? If it's that important the image is fubar to start out with. it's 2022 and while watching this I just bought one so...
