For those trying to mount this to a racing stand, the large plastic clamp bolt doesn't reach to clamp against a thin piece of metal as it's is expecting to clamp onto a thicker desk, take the 4 small screws from the clamp arm (as shown here at 15:00) and flip the plastic clamp bolt upside down (no need to take anything off from the top of the gear stick) then when reassembled it can clamp against a thin metal stand shelf for a bit of added stability.
I just repaired my sons shifter for a second time by inserting some shims in the potentiometer axis mounting holes. In contrary what one would think, this shifter creates two analogue signals from the two potentiometers which then leave the plug. The wheel obviously defines two voltage thresholds for each axis to determine in which of the three positions the stick is currently in on the given axis. While that in itself is not a problem, the potentiometers and their mounting is. The stick is only moved in a very narrow angle (around 50 degrees on each axis), and therefore the area used on the pots also covers only around 50 degrees, which is tiny. Therefore, even a fraction of a mm of play between the pots and their mounting hole on the stick will lead to significantly off spec voltages which then causes the wheel to misinterpret the chosen gear on the stick. From my experience, theres a 100% chance that every single Logitech G29 shifter will fail sooner or later with a symptom of selecting the wrong row or column of gears. The G29 set is quite nice, but that shifter has very unfortunate design problems.
As someone who just want to get a small beginners setup, it's super helpful to see a review from an experienced some racer. I like that you don't look down on this inexpensive shifter but also keep realistic expectations. Fantastic review, I'm looking forward to see more of your content!
Thank you for the disassembly. I'm a Mechanical Design Engineer and just getting into sim racing and have ordered this shifter. I have heard about the all of the 3D printed mods to help with the stiffness of the gates, and looks like it all comes down to the tension on the spring loaded steel detent ball engaging into the hole.. This video was very informative. I cannot wait to get mine and start evaluating it.
I got around to evaluating this assembly. What I did was opened up the detent hole by around .020" replaced the detent ball with a slightly larger steel ball, (I believe the included ball was 3/16" around .187" and the increased OD ball I installed was 7/32 around .218") and also expanded the detent spring (by means of just manually stretching it a little) that forces the ball into hole (providing a little more force) and it GREATLY improved the locking and stiffness of the shifting gates :) I believe this is a permanent fix for the stiffness as the design is not changed just altered. I tried the 3D printed route using PLA, and it did work, however, I was concerned with it failing by wear and cracking over time, or decreased stiffness from usage. One more thing I will add, I also soldered the ball to the end of the spring, just wanted to ensure the ball would remain seated against the spring. hope this helps..
@@greg20152015 Have any problems come from your ball swap yet? Thinking i might tackle it this weekend. Been looking around for another shifter but really like the logitech size/style.

I've been looking at getting this shifter as its $50 now, and this is exactly the kind of review I wanted to see. It's great to see the internals and have an idea about the durability of the product and possibilities for modding.
I love my g29. Just take care of it. I was curious how the internals worked. Im delighted to see now that it should be easy to repair or to even mod. I like the idea of putting a stiffer spring into that housing with the ball bearing
Thanks to this video I found the two screws that got me scratching my head because I simply didn't even think they would be so deep down, hidden. I almost broke it. Thank you!
best upgrade for this shifter is to add a small bolt with a large head (to act as a spacer for preloading) behind the spring that makes the ball fall into the detends. He shows the bit i'm talking about at 21:16. Idea is to add preload to the spring (because the bolt has a large head that makes it act as a spacer) to make the shifts notchier. Works great, good & free upgrade to this shifter.
You’ve saved my shifter, as I knew you would. Now I know how to take the thing apart. The bobbin that holds up the dustcap got loose and dropped, it turned out. It’s not a bad little shifter, considering the wheel it’s supposed to go with. If you go upmarket, the wheel comes first anyway
I've always though gears were selected by buttons being pressed by the lever, but in fact it is done by these two potentiometers that indicates the lever position? very clever! Great review Barry!
Good tear down, the feel does go away when rigidly mounted. Looks like though that spring/ball can be stiffened to make it have a bit more resistance with shifting, wish I watched this video before cable management though.
I own this shifter and it has performed very well. My only issue is the clamp being weak. I pulled it clean off during a race and it totally messed me up. Had to can the race. Reclamped it and it hasn't come off again yet, but I'm not totally sold on the clasps.
Ive since bought the GT Omega ART cockpit. Its a huge upgrade over the cabinet frame I had been using. Although I dont have the shifter hard mounted, the shape and rigidity of the plate have ensured it hasnt come off again.

I bought one of these (as per other comments it's all I could afford). Initially i drilled into my table and used the M6 screws (not provided) because the shifter would slide off (I have a table with a round edge). I didn't mind the holes because this is an old table. After a while it started to annoy me. For the novice mounting it next to the wheel is kind of ok but that is not the location it normally is in a car or where your hand normally falls to. So that, together with pedals sliding away and kids needing a box to prop them up made me decide that the whole G920+Shifter combo would be best suited on a proper rig. Due to space & budget limitation I designed and built my own and will install it soon (painting it now). Back to the shifter though, I totally agree with your comments, for the money this would do and the fact you demonstrated you can drive (and you CAN DRIVE) it well enough with this shifter affirms that it is actually not a bad buy (while you put any extra cents into the 'Serious Gear' saving jar (currently only a dream). Thank you for the review. It can be modded and extended but that would put undue stress on it. I would use it until it dies (or the kids kill it). Highly recommend bolting it though. For the record minimum plate width for clamps is 10mm and back plastic clamp (a surprising) 18-20mm so if you have a 16mm desk it will move and you will need a spacer or extra piece of wood.

Since I don't own a Playstation, I was not able to test it with the steering wheel connected to it. My question is, "Does the steering wheel need to be connected to a Playstation for the lights to turn on and power up?" Thanks in advance for your answer!
My logitech shifter has started to slip over from 1st to 3rd and 2nd to 4th gear. Tired of the plastic so I decided to buy a TH8A shifter instead, don't know if it's a problem that a normal user can fix..
i've been bought this shifter for 3 months ago, now often jump gear if we play sim racing, from gear 1 to 3, and then from gear 6 to 4, wheres the problem? help me pls , thx before
Personally Id guess its a buggy or dirty potentiometer, the one that detects whether the shaft is to the left (1-2), center (3-4), or right (5-6-R). The other detects whether up, center, or down
Thanks for showing me how to tear this down reverse gear has just failed in my unit after 3 years and probably about 100,000 miles of use. Cant see anything wrong though? :(
It is probably just broken. It happens with mice and keyboards too, they have a limited amount of clicks, it's the same thing with a shifter but then it's with the gears.
Hello Barry, thank you for this great review. I'm wondering if is a good shifter or mine is failed, because with month of normal use and treat, the first gear is not entry well. All the others are fine, only the first gear doesn't response. Do you think I have to take it to warranty or this is normal? Thank you!
I extended mine with 12cm rod and then sat that over the existing rod and Refitted the original knob to the top , now it feels alot more “real” at least for me anyways , Car wreckers or hardware store has metal rods of all shapes and sizes just gotta maguyver stuff together!, also dont use powertools on these unless you want to ruin shit !, unless you do this stuff alot
@@Sithhy hey mate , yeah it was slightly larger diameter and went over the top then sorta tighten up at the bottom, but can Use cloth/duct tape AT BOTTOM to hold in place and hide it with the leather cover , also I bought a real gear shift knob (Sparco silver one $20) it came with rubber size adapters and one fits perfectly over the top end of the rod that's just a but larger than the one on the gear shifter , now it's bloody great and easy to do, any auto store will have gear shift levers and most come with adapters , good luck mate👍
I guarantee 100% that it's NOT real leather...in fact almost nothing is made from real leather these days, if it is, it's not on a $50 video game controller.

Mine came out of the box with the same problem... Did you managed to fix it?
@@GustavoAraujo-zi7fk same here
@@mariyanzarev6423 mine started working after some days... I don’t know what happened to start working, because I didn’t change anything
I picked up a Logitech driving force pro at a garage sale. I tested it for power by plugging in the power supply. The two green lights on the steering wheel did not light up. Since I don't own a Playstation, I was not able to test it with the steering wheel connected to it. My question is, "Does the steering wheel need to be connected to a Playstation for the lights to turn on and power up?" Thanks in advance for your answer!
That wheel is USB, it's compatible with both PS2 and PC. Just plug it into your PC instead.
No, It depend on what game you are playing like Racing or Simulation!!!
i never understand why the g920 shifter have better quality then all other event if thy are older i use it whith my need g29 set
My logitech shifter has started to slip over from 1st to 3rd and 2nd to 4th gear. Tired of the plastic so I decided to buy a TH8A shifter instead, don't know if it's a problem that a normal user can fix..
How long did you have it until it started doing that?
@@DustyyBoi same thing happened to mine
@@DustyyBoi for me its 2-3 months haha
i've been bought this shifter for 3 months ago, now often jump gear if we play sim racing, from gear 1 to 3, and then from gear 6 to 4, wheres the problem? help me pls , thx before
Personally Id guess its a buggy or dirty potentiometer, the one that detects whether the shaft is to the left (1-2), center (3-4), or right (5-6-R).
You shifting without a clutch?
They would sell a lot more of these things if they did it with an usb connection !
they have that type of connection because the g29 uses it even the paddles they come with have a 9 pin ( i own one)
I run them with a USB converter from Leo Bodnar. Works like a charm.
What size monitors do you use in this video demonstration?
27"
How do you get to the 7th gear for some cars?
no hbox cars use 7 gears to my knowledge, they all use paddles/seqeuential so you would be using paddles for those cars.
How did u plug it into ur pc🤔 with a different steering wheel
I'm pretty sure you can mix and match all the wheels, shifters and pedals, as long as they are made for the system or pc you are using.
@@mrmasterpeels nah g920 need the logi hub lol. Was wondering what connectors he used haja
The Leo Bodnar USB cable (see the review on this channel)
17:30 that is not a breakout board
Hello Barry, thank you for this great review. I'm wondering if is a good shifter or mine is failed, because with month of normal use and treat, the first gear is not entry well. All the others are fine, only the first gear doesn't response. Do you think I have to take it to warranty or this is normal? Thank you!
Take it in for warranty man, should last a bit longer than a month!
Can you use this without the Logitech G29/G920?
Yes, you will need the Leo Bodnar USB conversion module.

Thanks for the quick reply. Great video by the way.
Did you use the same diameter rod as the original one? I would love to do a mod like that on my G29 shifter
