I've been watching this guy for years and I'm only "lightly" into the hobby, but have been getting more into it lately, always quality content. Just picked one of these up yesterday, can't wait for it to get here.
Just because I have it and have tried it. My nissan 350z knobs fits on the TH8A which is a M10x1.25. I had my NISMO duracon on it for the longest time. and it never unscrewed or wiggled.
And it is the logical way for it to be. I would not even use more than six gears if I had this shifter. 8 way looks a bit ridiculous. If the neutral were not offset, I would consider this product to be unusable.
Well it COSTS more than many wheels. I certainly wouldn't say it's _worth_ more that most wheels. You can have a lot of fun playing games with a racing wheel with no external shifter. I doubt it would be much fun playing games with shifter but no wheel.

Great review (as ever). I've used this TH8A primarily as a H shifter. Recently I bought a Fanatec SQ1.5 and the TH8A serves as an analog handbrake now.
I bought one of these awhile before I got my fanatec H-pattern.. I got the ricmotech sequential mod for it and use it as a up high SQ shifter now.. works great gives you that resistance and click feel for cheap.
I was using the little shifters that come with the Fanatec CSR wheel for years until my H-Pattern broke. I bought the TH8A to replace it and I've really enjoyed using it.
I'm not a very intelligent man. I bought this shifter because I saw two words "thrustmaster" and "in stock" (technically it's three words...work with me here) . It was only after I closed my eyes and hit the "submit order" button that I realized my folly of not actually knowing what I bought. I frantically did what normal well adjusted people would do, go to UA-cam. Yours was the first video that popped up and you've answered every single question I should have had. Now I know I made a good choice for my needs and budget. Thank you!! Subscribed!
Thanks for a good review. It's getting to the point where the vast majority of UA-cam product reviews are little more than mindless advertising where some idiot merely parrots a feature list. You learn nothing more than what the manufacturer wants you to know. But, I love these reviews that take stuff apart so I can see inside. For technically inclined people, there is no substitute for being able to see how something works and how it is built before laying out the cash to buy it. I've now watched several of these. Thanks for all of them. You have a great eye for important details.

Great video! Personally as a big h-pattern enthusiast, I enjoyed using my TH8A for about a year and a half until the desk clamp developed so much movement that I was going to have to hardmount it. However, before I could do this, I found a week-old Fanatec Clubsport SQ V1.5 on the iRacing forums. Having used that Clubsport shifter for a couple of months, I can say that while the TH8A beats the TSW Speedshifter, SST Lightning, and Act Labs RS2006 H-Pattern shifters, the Fanatec has officially ruined the Thrustmaster one for me...
I was like you Barry. I too had issues with the lack of feedback, or how I'd put it... it is like you're stirring with a stick in a metal pot, looking for the right gear. Personally, I had the TH8 RS which is internally identical apart from the detachable wire. When the Fanatec CSS Sq came out I got it and that was a day and night difference, and it became more reliable last year when I got my internals upgraded by Fanatec from V1 to V1.5 (potentiometers to HAL-effect sensors). Personally I don't feel like having to get anything better than the Fanatec, but the Thrustmaster TH8 definitely left me hungry for more. Which is why I'd rather advice the Fanatec one rather than have a fellow simracer buy twice.
I love the way this shifter looks like an old blender. And yes, I'm not kidding. I want one, but I'll probably get a Logitech one dues the price. The offset part of the stick is due the fact that most carts have 5+R patterns, where the neutral position is aligned with 3rd and 4th gates. While yes, Thrustmaster could center the neutral position, it would make it more difficult to engage the 3rd thru 6th positions. You see, in a 5+R diagram, to engage 3rd and 4th, you just need to push the stick forward and back. If you make it central in a 7+R, every position requires to move the stick a bit left or right.
Great video, do you have a video on how to unscrew the stock long gear knob shaft or instructions on how to do it please? I'm fitting a shorter gear knob shaft.
