Maybe a dumb comment, but the lighting is just perfect in this video. Every member of the band seems to be barely stepping out of a shadow. It seems to really fit with their mood.
E-bows, real bows, the sustain, delay and reverb...the build-up and release of tension in the percussion, plus her ethereal vocals...DAMN! This performance just gets better and better with every view and listen. She is so soft-spoken and humble, almost 'shy' for lack of a better word. She fortunately doesn't seem possess that common, 'entitled-to-be-pretentious' lead vocalist attitude. I just recently discovered Daughter, and am really impressed, if that isn't obvious enough...
I’ve always dreamt of Daughter and Keaton Henson or possibly Radiohead getting together for a collaboration. It would be so amazing! I’ve even though about what it would sound like if she did a session with ALT-J and just got weird with it. Imagine an RnB artist working with her too! Someone like Sonder(Brent Faiyez). Any of those mash ups would be amazing! Also, I love how you recognize all the details(e-bow, reverb, delay, percussionist…). Not many people notice all the details unless they’re a musician too haha I’m a drummer and although I liked the beats the drummer in ex:re made, I have mad respect for this drummer. When I saw him using 4 mallets at once in another video I started to really notice how important his place in this band truly is. Minimal beats that are still emotional and powerful. That’s no easy task!
Had the privilege of seeing these guys live in Houston for their Not To Disappear tour not knowing a single song by them. I left with my mouth wide open in shock out how amazing they sounded live. A forever fan since.
Words can not express the admiration I hold for this band. The lyricism is so breathtakingly honest and fragile. Her voice never screams for attention yet has it, full heartedly, throughout. I hate to even compare but I see Explosions in the sky, Jonsi and The xx influences here. I also wish people would stop saying that any english girl who sings in her accent sounds like Kate Nash. Too much love. Please make music forever
Love the way the presenter is knocked dead for words at the end, you can see that performance hit him in the chest...........special recording this was.
I always ignored this band when I was on YoutTube but I never listened to them I don't know what was up with me and the ignorance but one day I opened the song ''Smother'' and I fell in love with their music. And I'm glad I did listen to that song. This music changed my life.
Alice Del Rey it's always like that. I used to listen let's call it group X and there was another Y in the YT suggestion box which I had no idea who that might be - and I never clicked to check. Turns out X split up some year ago and the Y dude began a solo career, which was... mind-bending to say the least. Pure lyrical genius. Now a year ago, Y announced an end to his career, with a "happy end' tour. I've traveled 1000km to see Y live, what a blast that was! :) Changed my life as well. HIGH FIVE! :) tl:dr; except the unexcepted :)
laura nielsen True dat! I've never been connected to music before I found Daughter. The band is the first one that woke up my feelings. I've never felt so connected to songs before. And it's a wonderful feeling
When she sings Smother, you can feel the pain and all the emotions by hiw she sings and her facial expressions is just... overwhelming and breath taking.
I sincerely emphatise with this guy sitting over there. He must be so immersed in their songs and having to speak afterwards. I would not want to speak at all for ages.
saw them in New York. Fucking perfect show. Love how they use the violin bow and i love how they used these echos and it was just perfect. I want to see them live again so badly.
This performance was just awesome, Daughter find the way to create a whole "world" just through their simple music, Elena's voice match perfectly with the rest, and about a year ago, when I saw them at Clermont for a concert, she looked like a shy little girl and it was sooo lovely... In concerts they so much better, because even though these songs are kind of calm, there's some energy coming out from the stage. Can't wait to see them again!
They always make me want to cry, dance, laugh and sing. Genuinely beautiful music performed by incredibly talented people - what more could one ask for?
Thank you Raydrick Francius for introducing me to Daughter when we lived in Groningen, been coming back and enjoying this gem for 7 years and will continue to be back here...hope you are at peace wherever you are
Impeccable performance! I rarely listen to female singers but I honestly can't stop listening to their album. It's right up there with the quality of Bon Iver and James Vincent McMorrow. She's amazing.
I love how Daughter is able to create such a deep soundscape with a limited number of instruments and members. It demonstrates their skill in both writing and performing. Love these guys!
Such a good band, every song a gem. Something very beautiful is unfolding, and we're lucky enough to be along for the ride. I feel privileged to have seen them live, and hope to see them again soon.
Merci et encore merci ! Après le live inoubliable de London Grammar sur cette même chaîne radio, je profites de cette performance de The Daughter !! And yes, we also follow your web-radio in france. Thank you so much guys for your work. I am going to listen this one for a third time 🥰
***** +sophiemanic That's an old trick that was popularized by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin back in the late 60's. He's a master guitarist and one of the greatest guitarists to ever live frankly. I have no doubt that's where this guy got the idea.
***** I idolize him as a musician, I don't care about his personal life and I don't look up to any of that. A persons music and creations shouldn't in any way be dismissed or counted down simply because of their bad personal decisions. Also, what happened with Lori Maddox was very common in those days, and he didn't realize her true age till much later on. Many of those groupies were very young, but would say they were 19, and dress to look the part. Page isn't the only one that happened to. As for the first bowed guitarist, I never said Page was the first, he simply popularized the technique and made it more well known.
***** That's all fine and good, I was just stating that I think it's stupid when people dismiss someones art simply because they had personal issues, which I wasn't sure if you were getting at. After all i've come across plenty of people who are quick to dismiss guys like Hendrix, Page, etc. art simply because they made bad personal decisions which I think is stupid. As for Page, I don't so much idolize him really as I simply take influence and cues from him in terms of my own playing, and I recognize his massive contributions to the rock world, especially for us guitarists. Also, I'm not saying that what happened between Page and Maddox wasn't wrong, but Page shouldn't take all the blame. Maddox herself has said that she would frequently tell the rockstars she was with that she was of age, and i'm sure many never even found out that she was underage. Groupies seemed to have been much younger and much more intense back in those days. What was really wrong on Page's part was that he continued doing it and locked her up, which in my opinion was probably him attempting to diffuse the situation.
Have never heard any better music then this girl are making... Holy, im used to undergroud-rap and metal. I had a bad time, and i was listening to this girl EVERYDAY. Day in and out. All thanks to this girl and my best friend who showed this band made me wanna stay alive. This made me into another person, seriously.
Daughter is seriously the best artist right now. Their sound, their lyrics, it's phenomenal. Very few artists create albums on which EVERY song is pure gold. This is art.
Such a great talent, it's amazing her way to induce you into her feelings, to see the inner shadow of life, the blue. Impressive voice, so smooth, so perfect.
My depression got worse just cause I must suppress the urge I have, to hug this being of purity (this woman, I mean) since I'm not -nor will be- able to do that. And then she sings and I forget how sad I am, for the duration of the song. I just hope I won't lose that, at least. I already feel nothing most of the time -..-
This is what music is about. When someone delivers a performance so convincing and heartfelt you want to cry... 'Smother' is a fucking amazing song (and so are all the others). I'm in love with this band.
I never paid much attention to drummers, but man I am so impressed with Remi. So many techniques in all of these songs and all stuff available on YT. This coming from a non-musician, so what do I know, but yeah. I think he's great.
10 years later and I still cry when I listen to this haunting performance of Smother.

Theptida Dokmai
Brings a tear to my eye everytime. Smother makes me think back on all my mistakes and pain. But it's a comforting thing by the end
the way Elena sings is so painfully beautiful
Does this girl have any idea what an angel she is?
She's really nice and sweet (i am a girl)
She's one of god's favorites
@@SpringDonZ hello "a girl"
It's just purer if she doesn't, isn't it?❤
This is probably the best video on the internet.

Great performance!
daughter is beyond amazing... elena's voice is utter perfection
Im a guy, and Smother just brings me to tears every time I listen to it. Definitely my favorite of theirs.
Maybe a dumb comment, but the lighting is just perfect in this video. Every member of the band seems to be barely stepping out of a shadow. It seems to really fit with their mood.
KEXP seem to always be on point when it comes to sound and lighting.
i realize it is kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good website to stream newly released movies online ?
@Camden Raul i dunno atm I've been using flixportal. you can find it thru google =) -xavier
@Xavier Koda thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service :D Appreciate it !
@Camden Raul No problem :)
Unbelievable how good they are LIVE!

thanks for sharing......that is just how I imagine it would be if I saw them live. Thinkin I'll try to get most if not all their offerings
I saw them live in houston also in 2016. I wonder if we went to the same concert that would be crazy.
Daughter is just such a lovely sight
KEXP does the best recordings, I've yet to hear a band sound as good on their proper albums as they do on these sessions
Words can not express the admiration I hold for this band. The lyricism is so breathtakingly honest and fragile. Her voice never screams for attention yet has it, full heartedly, throughout. smother is so hauntingly sad but powerful. it's just gorgeous
Love the way the presenter is knocked dead for words at the end, you can see that performance hit him in the chest...........special recording this was.
Her speaking voice is perfect by itself, holy shit.
When you say "where the music matters" I take it very seriously. KEXP is one of the fewest radios that play great music nowadays.

Their playlists are hit or miss honestly.
Sad but true

+Alice Del Rey That's exactly what happened to me too... except it was with the song "Youth", I ignored:-)
laura nielsen I was so silly to ignore the cover image of the song ''Smother'' because it seemed like an old rock band hahaha
Alice Del Rey The image of "Youth" looks like a music video for a really heavy metal band hahah... And now I'm so much more into music than ever!

Dammit Igor! The guitar is flawless and the production even more so. Everyone is so zoned in on Elena that they forget the others.
Nor him, he is the producer.
I sincerely emphatise with this guy sitting over there. He must be so immersed in their songs and having to speak afterwards. I would not want to speak at all for ages.
This is so good. I just want to breathe it in. Her voice is so poignant and piercing, all of these songs are pure gold.
She has one of the most beautiful voice, of all the bands I'm listening to!
+laura nielsen I recommend Lady Lamb. She also has a KEXP session from last year
okey, thanks
Daughter just takes me there every time, every song. I don't hear the music I feel the music.
She's so talented! Amazing, I wish I ever get the chance to see her live

I will see them tomorrow 💕

I love how Daughter is able to create such a deep soundscape with a limited number of instruments and members. It demonstrates their skill in both writing and performing. Love these guys!
She looks exactly how she sounds ... an underappreciated beauty that is subtle but amazingly powerful all at once.
This music helps you escape. It teleports you somewhere you never knew you could reach.
Nonchallant intro and then you're struck by "Winter".
There is no better song in the world that started an album and a band.
