I really like the soundtrack you used while comparing the footage of each camera. The side by side views was executed well too. However, I think pushing the aperture to somewhere like F3.5 would have shown a more realistic and distinguishable comparison. The depth of field is too narrow at F2.8 for shooting landscapes IMO (even at low light) and the A7SIII should be more than capable of handling this change.
Had my GH5 for 3 years and shot dozens of videos with it. Switched to EOS R in January, and been using that since. Every time I go back to GH5 I LOVE using it. I actually like using it more than the Canon - but the image quality really is so much better on the EOS R that I finally pulled the trigger and sold all my Panasonic gear last week. Sad to see it go...
1600 is the max i'd go on a GH5 but we had a really bad issue with noise in slog3 this weekend on the a7siii - it's tricky because slog3 gives you the most dynamic range (same with v-log in 10 bit on the GH5) but they are both very noisy profiles. just gotta know the quirks limitations of any camera you use and you'll be a-ok. still a cool camera though!
OK, ISO performance is undeniably astonishing on the A7sIII, but as an olympus shooter, I can tell you one of the benefits of M4/3 is the fact that you can shoot with faster lenses without sacrificing focus because the depth of field is not as narrow, although it is narrow enough to get good background blur despite what the internet says. If you had shot with a 1.4, 1.8, or a hyper prime, of which there are many to choose from, another advantage of M4/3, it would have made up at least some of the difference. Another problem with the GH5 is autofocus, which Sony is much better at. I think this issue is overblown because most video should really be manually focused, which I think Panasonic just assumes is what their users are mostly doing, but the EM1 MKII, which I have, and later Olympus cameras have much better autofocus in video with phase detect and contrast AF. I think in examples like this, soft focus makes low light performance seem that much worse. It's easy to mistake soft focus for noise. Panasonic really does need to work on this issue. I think one of the newer Olympus cameras would have done better here, especially with a faster lens. I think it's totally fair to use a faster lens on a M4/3 camera in this kind of comparison, because realistically, that's what M4/3 shooters would be using. The ability to use wider apertures instead of higher ISO to get your exposure is something I think a lot of non M4/3 users don't understand. Yes, ISO performance isn't as good, but we don't rely on it as much, again because of the wider depth of field with the same aperture. Bridge in the beginning the GH5 was darker but I liked the image more. Obviously more noise in the GH5 on the zoom. Gas station I liked the GH5 look of the image better as well. The capital I liked the Sony color better. The tunnel I was a fan of the grey in the lighting but I feel like the yellow in the GH5 is what you often see in tunnels at night. Damn that GH5 is solid, cool video Cody. No idea if my comments above will resonate with others, maybe my eyes are off 🤣
That iconic railroad bridge is awesome. That reflection on the Susquehanna was really nice too. I've wanted to get down there to shoot that bridge for a while. Might be interesting this winter. What's the best route to a great photo location for the bridge? I'd be coming 81 South out of the Lehigh Valley. I've been down by the Masonic Temple along the river in the past. Is that where you were in this video? I've always thought that the A7 iii had cooler temperature output to it's images. I really noticed this when I started watching the Optical Wander channel. Yes, obviously low light performance is one of the few reasons to replace a GH5 with a Sony a7Siii. But with any Sigma 1.4 lens, M43 cameras also work good at night. Of course there are other areas where the GH5 is better: better IBIS, no heat, lightweight lens, more time recording, better lens versatility, no vignetting, better focus peaking, more megapixels, anti-alias filter, bigger rear LCD, higher resolution rear screen, shoots at higher frequency (12 vs 10 flaps/sec), easier time-lapse photography (has an intervalometer built-in), better studio light control (has a PC Sync socket), faster buffer clearing (supports a more advanced SD data transfer standard UHS-II vs UHS-I), better price, etc.
Interesting the different ISO values here...your gh5 at iso 6400 and the a7siii at 8000 in the opening...you’d think those number would be flipped around. And I agree with Patrick Tomasso above...HLG3 looks cleaner in lowlight but slog for everything else for its dynamic range. Cool test Cody
Also the lens on the gh5 is a 2.8 and on the Sony is a 2.8 but the gh5 2.8 is equivalent to a 5.6 on a full frame camera in order to have a 2.8 full frame equivalent you will need a 1.4 lens on the gh5 so it could be A fair comparison

Great video Cody, Like you said the GH5 is four years old so it's like comparing the iPhone 7 camera with the new one. Technology moves on for the better (Most of the time) I'm waiting for the GH6 which is due in March (mainly due to having some many MFT lens) which is not long to wait plus the added bonus the Sony might be back in stock ;)

Interesting comparison. Thanks. I miss my Gh5 but now with a Canon eos R I can use higher iso and autofocus when I want (without crossing my fingers hoping it would succeed). However the Gh5 is still a great camera. And maybe still unbeatable for the stabilization.
I simply cannot sell my GH5 + Olympus Pro F1.2 lenses. There way better cameras in low light, but if you're out during the day I'd still argue that the GH5 (with Vlog) is still as good as anything else on the market to this day. I own a Canon C200 and an R6, but recently shot a commercial outside in the country on the GH5.... no tripod, no monopod, no gimbal... just me and the GH5. Out of my R6, C200, GH5S & GH5... if I was forced to only keep 1 of them, it would be the GH5. Which is incredible to think when its nearly 4 years old now.

If I was looking for a new camera, I would go with the Sony, I really like the new colors. But I'm sticking with the GH5, it's still a great camera and it's capabilities exceed my needs.
Well the gh5 image is like...2.5 stops underexposed....so of course it looks like shit. He didn't use an equivalent lens in the test....nor did he try to match dof (a more accurate way of comparing them).
As a GH5 shooter this was really nice to see. I am heavily considering the A7SIII to replace my GH5 and this is a big step in that direction. I shoot in environments where I can’t always control the lighting so I need better low light performance. The A7S looked crisper at even higher ISOs too. I love the GH5 but I think I’ve personally outgrown it.
I'm in this exact situation, but i'm not entirely sure if I've outgrown the GH5 or not. Like you, I can't control lighting in almost all the scenarios I shoot in and while NEAT video does an incredible job at removing noise, I'm finding in some scenarios I have to use ISO above 2000. How do you know if you're truly outgrowing a camera?
@@TheLancephillipslive I've honestly quit caring about noise in my work. No one has ever called me on it. I still try to keep my ISO as low as I can but I'm constantly over 2,000 anymore. My personal opinion? You've outgrown a camera when you are constantly finding a limitation to your workflow. For me? The GH5 dynamic range is limiting in both video and photos. I like moody / contrasty lighting, the GH5 does not. It also has the low light issue (I ignore it but I'd prefer not to). And the auto-focus is just unreliable. When I'm in front of the camera I often end up going back and forth trying to manually focus on my face, and even using my Atomos Inferno monitor, I still end up missing focus too often. I've lost HOURS of footage because i was JUST out of focus enough to not be usable. I need something that will grab onto my eye and actually stay there. That said, I'm still rocking the GH5 and BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camear 4k. I just can't justify making the leap to Sony. Having to change camera systems means all new lenses, camera bodies, and really I should get better SD cards for it too. Its a lot.
Yep, definitely a difference there. GH5 users could counter those situations with faster glass, but that adds front heavy bulk and expense. Not that I'm in the market for gear like this, but I think I'd rather go with the A7s iii and f/2.8 or f/4 maximum glass over a micro 4/3rds camera with ~f/1.4 glass.
I'd be curious to see this test with a GH6 later in the year. Saw something earlier comparing the S1 to the A7siii and it was comparable. Doesn't seem fair to compare a 2017 M43 camera with a 2020 full frame camera that is also a large gap more expensive.
GH% has much better looking moving video versus the A&S iii I think that is due to the superior stabilization and 180 shutter for getting that buttery movement. A7S iii always seemed jerky to me wit hno degree shutter and a bigger sensor which effects the stabilization
Regardless, I definitely want to upgrade to the GH5 from my G85 very soon. And if anything, I should be able to get a good deal on it from everyone selling them off for the new Sonys ;)
The only reason I'm still shooting with the GH5 is because I adapt Canon glass with a speed booster, which makes the zoom lenses f/1.8, giving me 1.3 stops extra light. That means I'm shooting at ISO 1250 instead of 3200. Put a 50 1.2 on it and I don't even know what the aperture equivalent is haha. If it weren't for that fact, I would probably have already bought Sony cameras or a C200. :)
It would be interesting to see how the new Lumix DC-S5 performs. I'm back and forth between getting that one or the Sony A7c. Everyone really likes Lumix 10 bit colors.

woha...the sony has great low light colors and clear shots, I'm impressed... to be fair, this is clearly not the best terrain for an gh5 ...for its price in comparison to the Sony its still a good camera I think, maybe with some faster glasses the differences will get smaller
Gh5 was defiantley a game changer and is still usable, a faster lens for the gh5 is pretty essential for low light 2.8 is um yeah, you need a speed booster / 1.4 etc, which can bump down those iso heaps creating less noise. Going to A7siii will be good move, I will miss that gh5 ibis though, it is defiantly superior to the a7siii ibis.

This test wasn't even remotely fair Cody. You'd never go out low light shooting on a GH5 with an f2.8 lens. You'd at the very least have an f1.8 lens. You yourself used to rock the voigtlander 10mm f0.95. We all know the A7Siii would win, but you so unfairly stacked the deck it's ridiculous
Haha sorry man, I was worried about matching focal lengths, but you’re right, trying to get that gh5 as bright of glass as possible is gonna be key! I borrowed a speed booster and can throw me ef 70-200 on there - match the focal lengths but also get like 1.9 equivalent (I think) - or I could get a 35mm for the a7siii - I just didn’t have the equipment necessary to do this test perfectly
In some cases that’s just not an option. I shoot real estate. I need a 7-8 mm lens for my wide shots on a GH5. No one makes a lens that wide at .95. I’m stuck at 2.8. I also shoot 99% of my stuff in 120p and even with the shutter at 125 (which you can pull off on real estate since motion blur does not matter) I still find myself at 1600 WAY more than I’d like and if I have to go higher than that I move to 60p and 60 shutter. Worst case it’s a tripod style pan at 24p 24 shutter but man that sucks. If the A7siii can give me a cleaner image while staying in 120p in areas I’d have to normally switch to 60 or 24 (plus more dynamic range I’ve been told) then it’s a no brainer for me. I LOVE my GH5 but in my little niche I’m afraid it’s time has passed.

Ya I don’t know. The sheer cost of having an A7siii is what bugs me. The body, the lenses, the heavy codecs. BUT if a persons got the money there really is no argument that the A7siii is objectively better in almost every way.
Not really a fair test. If you rocked the metabones speed booster with the Sigma 1.7 i think you 'd clearly see a difference and you'd still be ahed by at least $1000K
@@RCodyWanner suffice to say the M 4/3 is punching way above its pay scale. The there’s also 100 + lenses available in the lumix m 4/3 eco system too. If I were shooting a full scale movie on a budget I’d use LUMIX Gh5’s and almost exclusively.

This is not a fair comparison TBH. Sony is in a different league than GH5. Full frame vs Micro Four Third. You should treat GH5 like a cinematic film camera, with right lighting, Lens and composition you will get a winner result. If anything it should be GH5s Vs Sony A7S iii. Even then Full frame ( dual iso) will always win the battle!

Puts a GH5 in the thumbnail thinking it will get high marks. Same theory as putting a pretty girl in the thumbnail. We know your game. But you bottled out on turning on the shower. And for that... I'd give you a 7 😉😂. As for the review, it feels like excitement over low light use is a bit like excitement over a car's to speed. In practice you are in a lit situation often with extra lighting. A bit like a car rarely going over 30mph. The 4 year old Ford isn't much different to the brand new Tesla ... apart from the UA-cam clout 🤣 Great video though dude. GH5 still plenty useable for select low light stuff. I've seen worse image quality in some movies and TV shows....and I still watched. Is it my pc / monitor or does anyone else see banding in some Sony footage?
@@RCodyWanner 2:58 the sky looks pixelated and blocky. 3:30 over the door and the wall towards the right edge of the frame. I also see it on a gray backdrop on another channel. BTW, I generally ignore stuff like that unless it's some kind of comparison😉
yeah I wanted to keep the focal lengths consistent and didn’t have anything in that range for both cameras - would have been more helpful to throw an f0.95 on the gh5 and run the test - still impressed with how well the gh5 performed
Well this doesn't make much sense...You are underexposing the gh5 image, so you are showing much more shadow noise. If you had used a faster lens (I know you said you don't have equivalent lenses, but still) and exposed the image properly at iso 6400 it would have been much cleaner than your results showed.
As a matter of fact, you mentioned equivalent lenses, then you didn't even bother to stop down the sony to show what would be equivalent...You use a gh5. You know a m43 camera has a deeper dof so we use a wider aperture and lower iso for the same shot. You know that comparing them at the same aperture, with the gh5 shots literally underexposed by 2.5 stops, is neither a fair, nor honest comparison. Why would you post this at all? Is it just to be dishonest on purpose?
I think the gh5 with really fast glass still does a pretty damn good considering its a m43.

I've owned it and it's only decent. Definitely pretty ok for m4/3 but it's mostly only good to 4000 iso and definitely not in v log

I own a Canon C200 and an R6, but recently shot a commercial outside in the country on the GH5.... no tripod, no monopod, no gimbal... just me and the GH5.
Out of my R6, C200, GH5S & GH5... if I was forced to only keep 1 of them, it would be the GH5. Which is incredible to think when its nearly 4 years old now.

The GH5 always has had better colour science in my opinion - but sharpness is not as good as the A7iii

ISO was half on the Gh5. Why?
Anything above 6400 on the gh5 looks pretty terrible, but it only goes up to 25,600 expanded
If I was looking for a new camera, I would go with the Sony, I really like the new colors. But I'm sticking with the GH5, it's still a great camera and it's capabilities exceed my needs.

Well the gh5 image is like...2.5 stops underexposed....so of course it looks like shit. He didn't use an equivalent lens in the test....nor did he try to match dof (a more accurate way of comparing them).
As a GH5 shooter this was really nice to see. I am heavily considering the A7SIII to replace my GH5 and this is a big step in that direction. I shoot in environments where I can’t always control the lighting so I need better low light performance. The A7S looked crisper at even higher ISOs too. I love the GH5 but I think I’ve personally outgrown it.

I'm in this exact situation, but i'm not entirely sure if I've outgrown the GH5 or not. Like you, I can't control lighting in almost all the scenarios I shoot in and while NEAT video does an incredible job at removing noise, I'm finding in some scenarios I have to use ISO above 2000. How do you know if you're truly outgrowing a camera?
@@TheLancephillipslive I've honestly quit caring about noise in my work. No one has ever called me on it. I still try to keep my ISO as low as I can but I'm constantly over 2,000 anymore.
My personal opinion? You've outgrown a camera when you are constantly finding a limitation to your workflow. For me? The GH5 dynamic range is limiting in both video and photos. I like moody / contrasty lighting, the GH5 does not. It also has the low light issue (I ignore it but I'd prefer not to). And the auto-focus is just unreliable. When I'm in front of the camera I often end up going back and forth trying to manually focus on my face, and even using my Atomos Inferno monitor, I still end up missing focus too often. I've lost HOURS of footage because i was JUST out of focus enough to not be usable. I need something that will grab onto my eye and actually stay there.
That said, I'm still rocking the GH5 and BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camear 4k. I just can't justify making the leap to Sony. Having to change camera systems means all new lenses, camera bodies, and really I should get better SD cards for it too. Its a lot.
I tend to notice these things, but on my phone it was hard to tell. The color and focus differences were more noticeable.
I LOVE the color from my GH5 in Natural mode, but it just doesn't cut it once the sun goes down.

Yep, definitely a difference there. GH5 users could counter those situations with faster glass, but that adds front heavy bulk and expense. Not that I'm in the market for gear like this, but I think I'd rather go with the A7s iii and f/2.8 or f/4 maximum glass over a micro 4/3rds camera with ~f/1.4 glass.

I'd be curious to see this test with a GH6 later in the year. Saw something earlier comparing the S1 to the A7siii and it was comparable. Doesn't seem fair to compare a 2017 M43 camera with a 2020 full frame camera that is also a large gap more expensive.
completely unfair, and imo the gh5 held up, which is insane - i also could have chosen much faster glass for the gh5
but, mft 2.8 is FF 5.6, how is this comparison fair? You need MFT 1.4 lens to compare properly here

GH% has much better looking moving video versus the A&S iii I think that is due to the superior stabilization and 180 shutter for getting that buttery movement. A7S iii always seemed jerky to me wit hno degree shutter and a bigger sensor which effects the stabilization
Regardless, I definitely want to upgrade to the GH5 from my G85 very soon. And if anything, I should be able to get a good deal on it from everyone selling them off for the new Sonys ;)
The only reason I'm still shooting with the GH5 is because I adapt Canon glass with a speed booster, which makes the zoom lenses f/1.8, giving me 1.3 stops extra light. That means I'm shooting at ISO 1250 instead of 3200. Put a 50 1.2 on it and I don't even know what the aperture equivalent is haha. If it weren't for that fact, I would probably have already bought Sony cameras or a C200. :)
It would be interesting to see how the new Lumix DC-S5 performs. I'm back and forth between getting that one or the Sony A7c. Everyone really likes Lumix 10 bit colors.
I'd go with the S5 over the A7c which is pretty much just a rehoused a7iii. That being said the A7s iii beats both of them hands down for video

2:53 colors on the A7s seem much more accurate. Gh5 makes the green light look blue
woha...the sony has great low light colors and clear shots, I'm impressed... to be fair, this is clearly not the best terrain for an gh5 ...for its price in comparison to the Sony its still a good camera I think, maybe with some faster glasses the differences will get smaller

Gh5 was defiantley a game changer and is still usable, a faster lens for the gh5 is pretty essential for low light 2.8 is um yeah, you need a speed booster / 1.4 etc, which can bump down those iso heaps creating less noise. Going to A7siii will be good move, I will miss that gh5 ibis though, it is defiantly superior to the a7siii ibis.

I've been using my GH5 (I have two) since it hit the market. If GH6 or GH6S has better low light and AF I may get one.
2.8 lens on the Sony. Possibly more fair comparison with 1.4 lens on GH5. Fill up gas station footage at ISO 800 the GH5 looked quite good!

This test wasn't even remotely fair Cody. You'd never go out low light shooting on a GH5 with an f2.8 lens. You'd at the very least have an f1.8 lens.
You yourself used to rock the voigtlander 10mm f0.95.

Haha sorry man, I was worried about matching focal lengths, but you’re right, trying to get that gh5 as bright of glass as possible is gonna be key! I borrowed a speed booster and can throw me ef 70-200 on there - match the focal lengths but also get like 1.9 equivalent (I think) - or I could get a 35mm for the a7siii - I just didn’t have the equipment necessary to do this test perfectly
In some cases that’s just not an option. I shoot real estate. I need a 7-8 mm lens for my wide shots on a GH5. No one makes a lens that wide at .95. I’m stuck at 2.8. I also shoot 99% of my stuff in 120p and even with the shutter at 125 (which you can pull off on real estate since motion blur does not matter) I still find myself at 1600 WAY more than I’d like and if I have to go higher than that I move to 60p and 60 shutter. Worst case it’s a tripod style pan at 24p 24 shutter but man that sucks.
If the A7siii can give me a cleaner image while staying in 120p in areas I’d have to normally switch to 60 or 24 (plus more dynamic range I’ve been told) then it’s a no brainer for me. I LOVE my GH5 but in my little niche I’m afraid it’s time has passed.

I think the fair aperture comparison is f2.8 on ff vs f2.0 on crop - one stop difference for 2X sensor size?

Ya I don’t know. The sheer cost of having an A7siii is what bugs me. The body, the lenses, the heavy codecs. BUT if a persons got the money there really is no argument that the A7siii is objectively better in almost every way.
1.64x speed boost it maybe? it's not going to beat it BUT u`ll gain MUCH light with it .

Not really a fair test. If you rocked the metabones speed booster with the Sigma 1.7 i think you 'd clearly see a difference and you'd still be ahed by at least $1000K

@@RCodyWanner suffice to say the M 4/3 is punching way above its pay scale. The there’s also 100 + lenses available in the lumix m 4/3 eco system too.
If I were shooting a full scale movie on a budget I’d use LUMIX Gh5’s and almost exclusively.

This is not a fair comparison TBH. Sony is in a different league than GH5. Full frame vs Micro Four Third. You should treat GH5 like a cinematic film camera, with right lighting,
Lens and composition you will get a winner result. If anything it should be GH5s Vs Sony A7S iii. Even then Full frame ( dual iso) will always win the battle!

I'd give you a 7 😉😂. As for the review, it feels like excitement over low light use is a bit like excitement over a car's to speed. In practice you are in a lit situation often with extra lighting. A bit like a car rarely going over 30mph. The 4 year old Ford isn't much different to the brand new Tesla ... apart from the UA-cam clout 🤣 Great video though dude. GH5 still plenty useable for select low light stuff. I've seen worse image quality in some movies and TV shows....and I still watched.

yeah I wanted to keep the focal lengths consistent and didn’t have anything in that range for both cameras - would have been more helpful to throw an f0.95 on the gh5 and run the test - still impressed with how well the gh5 performed
Well this doesn't make much sense...You are underexposing the gh5 image, so you are showing much more shadow noise. If you had used a faster lens (I know you said you don't have equivalent lenses, but still) and exposed the image properly at iso 6400 it would have been much cleaner than your results showed.
As a matter of fact, you mentioned equivalent lenses, then you didn't even bother to stop down the sony to show what would be equivalent...You use a gh5. You know a m43 camera has a deeper dof so we use a wider aperture and lower iso for the same shot. You know that comparing them at the same aperture, with the gh5 shots literally underexposed by 2.5 stops, is neither a fair, nor honest comparison. Why would you post this at all? Is it just to be dishonest on purpose?
if you have night shoots you don't need 12800 iso ;) us better lens ;)
