- Tigran Hamasyan is an Armenian Jazz Pianist who's on the forefront of Modern Jazz. Today I'm going to look at the amazing harmonic language of Tigran by digging into the song 'New Maps' from his latest album 'The Call Within'.
Take some of these harmonic concepts and apply them to your own music, that's what The Prog School is all about!

I think another big reason that people cover Tigran’s rhythm rather than his harmony is that they have no idea what’s going on harmonically.
So good job! 👍
Harmony of Space of Your Existence next?
Thanks! Not sure I know what’s going on half the time, but it was fun to try and figure it out.
I laughed at this comment. Probably because it's true...
@@EduardoMoreira_Producer it’s true! I’m still not exactly sure what’s happening half the time here!
Great vid thanks, cool to see a discussion on the harmonic elements of Tigran's music which are extremely interesting in addition to his masterful rhythmic ideas.
Thanks! I don’t see enough people talking about his harmonic elements.
My favorite musician currently! So happy to see people also recognizing his harmonic genius, and not just the rhythmic. Great video!
Thanks so much! That’s why I wanted to cover his harmonic language, since the rhythmic elements are discussed so often.
Loved the analysis! And, was good to also see the slight limitations of the guitar. But, STILL very useful. I am a fan now.
Thanks! I did what I could on guitar, my piano skills are quite limited haha
Great video!
Just saw Tigran live twice in the last 2 weeks and damn one could spend their life studying his harmonic vocabulary, it's truly fascinating and you did a great job covering some of it!
Thanks! That sounds awesome! I’ll have to cover some more in the future.
Respect man. This isn't easy to cover and you did a great job. P.S. - As to the outro, I think he's also making reference to the 1st Part of this piece ("Old Maps").
I've heard of Tigran before, but I haven't given him a listen yet. I think this video has officially convinced me I need to check him out.
You need to! He’s such an inspiring musician.
Just found your channel. Your analysis of Tigran’s music is awesome. I love this channel already.
Thanks, and welcome!!
Woof. Lots to chew on in this one. Gonna have to go through it a couple more times. Good stuff!
Thanks! Still not sure I understand what’s happening in most of this haha
More tigran content please!!!!!!
Super interesting, well done analysing this monstrous piece!
Thanks!!
Reminds me of a certain final fantasy boss fight music, can't think which though.
Respect!!!!!!great vidéo!!!
Thanks!
Im late to the party. Great content man!🔥 Subscribed
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it!
What an awesome video! Greetings from france
Thanks!
9:30 that stank face xD
Haha, I do enjoy a good stank face
sometimes I wonder if his chords even make sense I mean ok subbing the V7 for a major9 chord is out there but some of his things are so out I just don't get how he thinks about harmony
If you do another Tigran one you should look at the harmony in "Our Film"/"Revisiting the Film". One hand is doing a melody in F minor and the other hand goes C# D# E and resolves on F#, it's a very strange combining of melodies that works without sounding dissonant
I’ll check it out! Tigran loves to take these simple folk like melodies and do all sorts of weird harmony underneath
