FlintKnapping Friday ep: 8 Flint Knapping Crystal into an arrowhead. for primitive hunting gear and supplies visit HuntPrimitive.com gillsprimitivearchery.com/
crystal mineral has organized molecular structure, while glass does not. But any quartz can fracture in the typical conchoidal fashion. Other gem stones do not because of their structure - beryl (aquamarine, emerald) for example has a straight line growth pattern and probably cannot be knapped without breaking
Yeah, quartz has a grain, not a cleavage. When you tumble quartz it forms an ovoid. But you sure as he'll did better than I ever have with Crystal. Great work.
will you be testing transverse arrowheads as found in europe ? there are plenty of examples of transverse and chisel heads being found in hunting contexts and usually with big game like deer .chisel shaped points transverse heads were the dominant form for our mesolithic hunter gatherers for thousands of years and in most areas they outnumber pointed forms . they have been found most associated with carabou hunters i believe. chisel shaped points seem counter productive especially for someone who likes to get the sharpest point on a conventional arrowhead . i would really like to see a test done on a carcass side by side with triangular points.
This is the first time i've seen or heard about knapping but it was so enjoyable and intriguing to watch. Thank you for the series and best of luck.
Flint knapping Fridays are my favorite

My dad colllected lots of crystals when I was growing up. I never had any use for them until now.
That's a great smoky quartz point.👍
For some reason the first thing I thought of were these Homo Erectus hand axes they keep finding, which are unusual.
I have done one out of rutilated quartz, it looks pretty cool with the needles of rutile running through it.😁

Good Morning Ryan I'd love to have a Amethyst Crystal Arrowhead 👋👍😃 I love Arrowheads 👍😃
Quartz crystals are a crystalline solid. Flint and Glass are amorphous. Very different substances.
Good morning from Syracuse NY brother and thank you for sharing your information and adventures
Splendid stuff, TY Ryan. 😄👍
