Ash Flat Bow (from Log to Bow)

- This is my second attempt at giving bow making a good try. I found the timber in my local woods. The ash had been felled due to ash die back so it was free for the taking. I learnt a lot making this bow and look forward to making one after I recover from my rib injury. Hope you enjoy the video

The hunt at the end cracked me up! Beautiful bow, I learned so much from this video. Thank you for sharing
Nice looking bow, great job!
Thanks for sharing!
:)
That snap scared the shit out of me 😮
Well done, old chap!
Lovely job, you can be proud of yourself... Dog is nice too
Nice work mate! Vid well done too. That "snap" noise scared me for a second. Clever tillering setup👍👍
You probably couldn't hear the sound of me shitting my pants after hearing that noise 😅
@@MrDesmostylus 😆😆I've snapped a few, it hurts! You changed your logo, nice👍
at 51 i was a professional woodworker almost my whole working Life for decades now until recently.
also into traditional archery.
english too for what it's worth lol.
anyways just wanted to say nice job fella i especially enjoyed the hunting segment.
Thank you very much. It was a nervous pleasure making it
Smooth and sleek! Love it
very nice bow
Funny, today i saw some bow making videos, and what can tell is, we all have many similiarities in our work even we have no influence between us. I was making bows from my 13 years old (2000) and i learnt everything without any source of info how and from what wood. Just try, tr,y try, try... I made almost same type of bows as you, and trick with heatgun is perfect (i hope you dont have patent for it :-D ). I must comeback and make bows again, still have plenty of years dried ash wood from young trees (less than 30 years for Ash wood) and some unfinished projects. And sorry for my english
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it
With the exception of the heat gun, I liked the fact hand tools were used
Wow. My impression was of this being a large(100k+) youtube channel... your filming, editing and absolute patience and skill with the craft are very impressive. You've certainly earned this subscription. Gorgeous work on the bow, brings to mind another youtuber I know who is looking at making his own bow but has been having issues.
Thank you. Means a lot. I can't wait to make more!! Thank you for the sub too
really cool video
Go Simon!👍 Beautiful job. Take care of those ribs. Pulling a bow is probably not what the Doctor ordered.
Thanks Brett. I find it hard to stay still and rest. That's for watching and for the comment ♥️
@@MrDesmostylus I had a crazy idea. I have seen advertisements for courses/retreats where participants pay to be tutored in the construction of an acoustic guitar. At the end of the course they have a guitar which they have made to take home. I bet people would also pay good money to make their own bow.
@@brettbrown9814 a few people run courses like that in the UK. It's a two day course and costs up to £300 I think, there's is definitely money in it . I'd like to get to the level of being able to make bows to sell. I reckon a few more goes at it and I'll be able to quickly make a great product. I need to really get my eye in with tillering first. This bow isn't close to perfect. It's a fun learning process though
@@MrDesmostylus Thanks for taking us along!
Brilliant work man! You have a sub from me :). Keep it up
very nice work 💪 what's that oil you are using after heat treating the belly?
Great work. How much do you want for your dog Mr?
He's not for sales I'm afraid 🤣
Nice job! I'm just now attempting to get an axe handle out of a small cherry trunk using similar methods.
Cherry can be lovely to work with. Can grown super straight too. Would be good to see the finished result!
@@MrDesmostylus This one is naturally shaped like a fawnsfoot handle so that's what it'll be!
well done.
For my eyes the limbs could bend more on the inner (handle) side instead of the tip side...but beautiful though
Thanks very much. I've done more tillering on the bow since making that video because I thought the same thing. Thanks for watching and commenting
that tillering section felt legitimately unnerving
Yeah I thought I'd lost it for a second there 😆
Belo trabalho Show mui lindo
Awesome! You did a really nice job. 45lb draw is what my production recurve bow shoots. Beautiful wood. Would you recommend the heat gun treatment for something like a hand carved axe handle?
Thank you. Funny you mention that because I was discussing heat treating axe handles with owen Ben and Kevin. I reckon you could fell and carve a ash handle and heat treat it all in one day. The ash I used for the bow was 20% moisture content. After the heat treat It was reading 0%. It didn't crack or split at all. It makes sense to heat treat even a stock handle before hanging it.
I would just make sure it is dry enough, if you want to apply heat for achiveieng it, go for it. But because toasting the wood actually makes it a bit brittle (that is why we don't heat treat the back of a bow) and an axe handle doesn't really need to bend, I see heat treat as a mere asthetic purpose (in a handle).
@@iasha740 I think it depends on what wood type you would apply the heat treat to. With my experience with ash you can heat treat it whilst it being pretty green. I think a good axe handle does need to bend to a degree. It needs to absorb vibration. Applying a heat treat before hanging the head means the eye of the axe handle wood can only absorb moisture meaning it's less likely to come loose. This is just a theory but I plan to try it out soon
@@MrDesmostylus Yes, the advantages on the fit of the head make sense. I hope it works out for you!
As someone who carves axe handles, if your carving green, leave it oversized then season it, it will be much faster. Never hang an axe on green wood as it will shrink and loosen or may split in a bad place. Always better to use seasoned Ash if you can get it.
Nice job , you will spoil your axes hitting them with metal though .
Yes, unless your axes have hardened polls in which case it doesn't damage them as they are made for it
Bottom limb seems stiff below fade out
I enjoyed watching you build the bow but the music playing was very distracting and irritating to the point I had to turn the sound off. Nice looking bow though.
Inner third of limbs are too stiff. Good luck with this fun hobby.
Thanks man. I went back and did more on this soon after I published the video. Over a year a go. Thanks for watching
you should get some orange trousers
I'm going to buy you a pair!
