I’m sure you remember Asher that Nathan received the same criticism his first year as a senior - all technical and no artistry. Give Ilia another season or two and I’m sure he will be a more complete skater.
Yuma is injured and withdrew from both of his GP assignments, in fact he should have been here. But I don't think he is Ilia's only competition, Kao as well seems to be a force to be reckoned with and put serious pressure on Ilia and the others. I'm also eyeing Daniel as a potential dark horse (he is improving so much!), and let's not forget Shoma, the current world champion! This season is going to be so exciting 🤩
@@private3364 I _adore_ Jun and want nothing but good things for him! I would be elated to see him win all the medals, but the competition is going to be tough if he can't upgrade his tech content (and I don't know how feasible that is... He is not training in Canada at the moment and I believe he has other obligations to attend to in Korea). Nevertheless, I want him to adopt Ilia and teach him to do a proper Ina Bauer lmao (his attempt at the gala was so cute heh)
I agree Yuma will be his biggest competition. There are others but Yuma will be tough to beat if he skates clean. Shoma is as well, and he has them both beat artistically.
Has something happened to Shoma? No mention of him as a main rival? I would say Shoma has the best all round package this season (unless I've missed something?)
I watch this young man skate and I see what Christopher Bowman could have been back in the late 1980s. He's got Bowman's charisma and prodigious talent but with far better focus on skating. I disagree about "skating quality." Not everyone is going to be a balletic skater. I loved this program; I felt it suits his cocky, bordering-on-arrogant style. Of course I am neither a skater nor a coach. But I hope they allow him to be different and not try to force him into the "classical" box.
I will start by saying he is a great jumper and is absolutely talented. I feel like his choreo is a mish mash of random bits that other skaters have that were great parts of their choreo but instead they are all placed in here without much reasoning. He need a new choreographer. I don't want to be overly negative and upset anyone so I'll finish by saying I definitely think he is the one to beat.
Ilia Malinin is the only true skater this season worth talking about. What he accomplished during Skate America was monumental and almost impossible. He skated into the history books by landing arguably the most difficult jump known to man; a quadruple axel. Even when he was attempting the four revolution spins, it appeared as though there was no momentum taken before landing it cleanly. This is master skating at its best!
@@mr.balloffur Yuna Kim's lark ascending was performed when she was just 17. Her upper body and musicality was already immaculate at that age. Just don't talk about her legs.
Hey guys, you have no idea what you're talking about if you say this guy is not artistic doesn't have great body line and expression. Just look at this year's short program. Watch how fluidly this guy moves... Just think of how much doing five quads with a lots detracted from Hanyu's performance at the Grand Prix final several years back. Melanin is doing way more difficult content and has to assimilate the artistic component with these more difficult technical jumping components.
@@paolo1391 it's a bit condescending of you to claim we don't know what we are talking about. Obviously no one claims that he has zero artistry but rather his artistry is still unrefined. In both his grand Prix free programs there are a couple of moments in his step sequences when it seems like he's about to fall over. He doesn't have the sharpness or subtlety of movement you normally get from say, a Jason brown or a Shoma Uno. You can also definitely tell Shoma has better quality program components at 17 vs. Ilia at 17. That also doesn't mean he can't get to that level in the future.
He is NOT the one to beat, though. That would be first Yuma and Shoma, in a debatable order. He needs to beat THEM. And they are looking a lot more balanced, even for a young Yuma. Illias musicality and skating skills need some work, FAST. Same goes for the spins. very slow, very little extention. Also, let's not kid ourselves. and 8??? in PCS? is laughable. He should be on the 6 range maximum. People loved to dunk on Trusova... at least she extended her leg sometimes
All it would take would be for the judges to judge the skating skills fairly. If they did that, and his components, he could have two quadruple axles, and he still would struggle to make it on the podium. His actual skating, and those programs are ,ghastly . He found a way to be worse than Nathan Chen.
Ilia Malinin should not be at the top of the podium based on the quad axel...his skating is lacking in many elements. If there were any integrity in the judging when it comes to worlds he would be nowhere near Uno's scores...but I suspect having a quad axel will inflate his component scores. Nobody is able to explain, nor have any videos addressed how the component score is built...while we talk endlessly of points, we only refer to the technical mark...it is just the cheat mark manipulated to elevate skaters with quads no matter what the state of their style or program's composition and impact.
What an amazing athlete! Here's to a brilliant skating career. Congrats to Ilia, & I hope he stays healthy.
It is so exciting to see him land that quad axel!! I can't wait to see what he does next!

Nathan Chen had awful choreo 😂

They're trying to pump everything behind the 4A so that his PCS go up as well.
Maybe because he didn’t skate at skate America?
@@wanderlustxhours Sure I know that, I think though Asher was talking about rivals throughout the year that's why I was confused.
He has a lot of Alexander Abt vibes! And I’m here for it! 😊❤
What an amazing young 👨 🧍♀️ 👩🦱 👨👦 God sends those to us as incredible human beings
Did they seriously compare his scores to Yuma and NATHANS??? and not Shomas???? This is just ridiculous

I thought he is a young bruce jenner
hope he'll learn artistic skills too, because besides his quad axel, I don't find his skating enjoyable
@Donny Hathaway Nathan always had better artistry but I like IM too.
I don't know many skaters, if any that have any artistry at 17 years old, they simply haven't been skating long enough
