“I mostly did it to ‘entertain’ people…” *cheeky smile*. Loved that. What a kid.
I love how much he uses the word 'we' and not 'I' - it really shows that although he's super confident and he knows he's crazy talented, there's a team behind him teaching/guiding/coaching and he's respectful of that fact.
because he is russian 😜
It really leaves me scratching my head that NBC and Peacock are not sharing Ilia’s programs from nationals. Even Gracie’s short is part of their collection of highlight videos. I understand there were many factors that went into choosing the Olympic team but at the very least we could give him some publicity. We should be promoting this kid like there’s no tomorrow but after his brilliant performance at nationals it’s just crickets. I don’t get it.
I’m wondering if it has anything to do with their agents? I don’t know for sure but there doesn’t seem to be much of a rhyme or reason. They don’t post some of Sasha programs for example either.
(Edit: I mean Trusova)
For me, the only way I can see everyone is on the Olympic Channel which is part of a cable package.
@@TheDivayenta I don’t have any TV so manage online. ISU UA-cam does a lot of competitions live, including Europeans. RusNats make it easy for everyone to watch live. US and japan more hit and miss.
Is it music rights? Too expensive.
@@1chienandalou great!
Based on his interview here, it doesn't really seem like he's had much communication with USFS, which is a shame. They should have a serious talk with him to explain their decision. They owe him that at least. Would be nice if they gave him a little motivation for the future as well.
He said his mom is the one who makes him do everything and his dad is the one who helps him do it 😂
I really like his mom. Tatiana Malinina was a great jumper with excellent technique back in her day. She had AMAZING effortless lutz technique.
He’s scary good. But seriously, he’s got a good team. To be able to perform on that level, under the pressure of US nationals, and do as well as he did, says a lot about how he prepares and his mindset. Amazing 🤩
It seems like his parents have done a good job with pacing his skating career - hopefully he will have a solid 4-8 years at the senior level and help push the level of men's skating in the US.
His momma is Tatiana Malinina. Figure skating junkies know she won the Grand Prix final in 1999.
This kid it it!!! Very charming and confident. He's got the Nathan swagger and Plushenko's confidence. His mom Tatiana Malinina should start training US skaters to land quads. She will be the USA version of Eteri in no time!
Spot on with that Nathan swagger and plushenko confidence 👍
@@nicolassanabria4386 And Alexander Abt’s charm.
I think she will be better than Eteri. She teaches good, healthy technique
What a laid back and talented kid. Looking forward to so much more from him!
If I were a young, up and coming American skater, I would be taking a good look at the coaching team of Malinina-Skorniakov. Hoping this success with Ilia (as well as Jill Heiner) elevates their profiles as coaches in the US. Thanks for this interview. Great content, Dave!
Rafael Arutyunyan also
Great interview! He must be protected at all costs. ☺️
What a lovable boy! Still mad at USFS not sending him to the Olympics! big mistake!! (can't move on from this one). Ilia's 3A is so high, I believe he can land 4A in the future and all his quads' technique are so pure and old school, so rare and precious nowadays. Extremely excited to witness his skating journey unfolding. Wish him best of luck and health. Figure skating is cruel for a skater who lands and attempt difficult quads. Wish him a happy , healthy, successful and long skating career!
They couldn’t have sent him because they had set the criteria for the selection more than a year and a half ago. They would have to change it last minute and say “oops” to everyone else just based on one unexpected awesome skate from Ilia? That would be unfair to everyone else. (As you can see Ilia also knew that he wasn’t really going to go no matter how awesome he did… as they had announced the criteria all that time ago and everyone knew. )
But he certainly made a splash, and was well scored, and earned a ticket to worlds in his first season out of juniors! it was exciting to see him do so amazing at nationals, but the fed had to stick to previously announced criteria. Otherwise the integrity of the entire process would be down the drain. It could be discussed whether those criteria should be changed in the future, but it wouldn’t be fair to just change it last minute and only count performance at the nationals.
Hoping Ilia will have many years of skating to show us, including at the Olympics!
That was exactly my concern with Ilya not making the Olympic team right now when he is so strong, young and vibrant. Hoping that 4 years from now he will be as strong as competitive and motivated as now. Russians have a saying that you should nourish and assist in any possible way the talented ones, as the mediocre people will find their ways to the top by themselves.
1chienandalou- "They couldn't have sent him"!? - not sure where you got this idea but they most CERTAINLY can send him and should. Unfortunately, they CAN send whomever they "choose" ... We've FREQUENTLY sent skaters who haven't even competed at Nationals (*very bad idea*) ... We've curbed our chances and placements for the future, not ideal ... but then again, they'd already used Jason in the Ralph Lauren Olympic wear ad campaign, hummm. . .
I really like Ilia! Glad to see he has a realistic but competitive attitude. Wish him good health and consistency going forward. He surely has a lot of talent! I look forward to see more of him. He could be someone amazing to watch for a long time, and sure hope he has a long, healthy and successful career!
Thanks for this interview!! Look forward to the video(s) about Europeans!
Exactly! This kid has a ton of talent, needs more work on his components, even though I see a ton of growth there. He will dominate the next 4-year cycle most certainly in the US & a great rivalry with Yuma.
@@lisamaureen5185 yes! It’s so cool to be excited about a young US male skater! I can see him, Yuma and Mark K (Rus) being the new generation of competition! Hope they all stay healthy and happy and give us some exciting skates to come! :))
I actually like him. Between him & Isabeau, I’m actually looking more forward to the next few years.
They look like they could be brother and sister to me. They smile when they skate.
Great questions, Dave! Ilia is a charmer and I would have loved to see him at the Olympics.
This talented young guy not being selected to the Olympics will have me only watching Nathan Chen program Then looking forward to watch him at Worlds!
So proud of our boy Ilia 😊 he did a great job in this interview..
100%
I really like his overall mentality, he's so stable mentally, it's relaxing to listen to him talk, even when he's talking about doing 4-4 combos
Cool boy. His performance was amazing. This is so beautiful. His quadruple jumps are so easy, like they are triples. Thin, flexible arms and body. It has something from Yuzuru, from Plushenko. He skated and smiled. He smiled because he enjoyed his skating. It's such a shame that we won't see him at the Olympics. I really wanted Ilya to share the Olympic ice with Yuzuru and Nathan. But it won't.
The first and second places in the championship of Russia are guaranteed to receive a place in the Olympic team. Third place may be considered based on the results for the season. According to Russian rules, Ilya would definitely go to the Olympics. For us, a big role is played not by what happened during the upcoming seasons, but by the form in which the athlete turned out right before the Olympics. For several months, the skill level of an athlete can change cardinally, both for the better and for the worse. Especially quickly everything happens in girls. Therefore, the main selection criterion is the Russian championship before the Olympics. In Japan, too, two first places in the national championship guarantee entry into the Olympic team.
USFSA rules keep young talent out of the Olympics. Instead of those who are showing amazing results today, the USFSA is taking those who have performed better in the previous two years. Strange policy. Do you think you are weeding out unstable members this way? No. In my opinion, you weed out the strongest and demotivate young athletes.
It seems that in America the rules for selection for the Olympics were adopted about a year and a half ago. I wonder if the experience of other countries was studied? Which country's skater selection rules formed the basis of the USFSA rules?
Thanks for the interview with Ilya. It was very interesting.
Sorry, my English is worse than Malinin's Russian.☺
Totally agree with everything you wrote. Don't worry about your English since it's your second language. Most Americans are not bilingual like you.
Great interview with Ilia! I can't wait to see how he does at Worlds.
❤️
Lol...Ilia bringing a soccer ball to practice as a warm-up tool reminds me of Nathan and his basketball. Both also love skateboarding. I knew he was training his jumps under Raf along with Nathan but I had no clue Raf's team was also helping him with spins, SS, and choreo. His spins have gotten faster since spring of last year. It still travels some but he will only get better. Good to see him working on all these different things!
I love that he has a bunk bed! Makes you remember just how young he is and how gifted he is at his age. Thanks for sharing!
🙏
I was thinking about that too! I like this guy and certainly no hurry IMO. He has the goods and I hope he will stay healthy and happy and gives us many years of enjoyment!
Great interview and terrific young man…. Wow… so much to look forward to. Once again thank you TSL
Thanks for the interview David and Ilia
very talented skater. i would like to see him in the Olympics
Dave Lease, Skating Dad: "You could get injured skateboarding......". My first thought, too! Great interview.
100%
Ohhh me too! I’d Much rather fall on ice than on concrete! A lot of the force gets absorbed and softened by the low friction on ice when you fall, transferred in a more horizontal direction. Skateboarding fall much scarier. Hope he does take it easy on that one!
This inteview is so amazing i cant stop rewatching it thank you so much for makin my day!!🤗❤
Fantastic interview, Dave! Thank you.
Thanks for this interview! I remember Tatiana Malinina when she was competing. I really enjoyed her skating. She had beautiful, elegant posture and was quite consistent. Nice spring in her jumps, too. She rarely made mistakes. However, the judges never gave her the higher marks she deserved. I'm not surprised she raised such a great skater!
When he said he wants to get good at skateboarding!! 😳😳😳. Love him
Ha!
Woo hoo! Bravo, Ilia! So happy to see this pop into my feed. Can’t wait to listen!
Hope you like it!
Thanks so much for featuring Ilia!!! Looking forward to seeing more from him!!! ❤❤❤ from 🇵🇭
🙏
Thank you so much Dave! Great interview!
❤️
Wonderful Interview Dave! He's a great kid! I'm certain he will get some coaching on public speaking and interviews ("You know" and "like") but he's considerate and inclusive of his team and his family. You also made it so easy because you really prepare and ask the questions we all would love to hear this young man answer. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the interview. I bet he will treasure this video when he's older especially at the end of his skating career. The questions you asked were all on my mind (and probably everyone's). So great job Dave. You always know what to ask! I'm excited to see him at the World's and next year (when both Nathan and Vincent off to college). The crown is his for the taking. It should be interesting where the judges place him at the World's if he skates both sp and lp clean.
Ilia is so talented, I wish we were seeing his amazing quads at the Olympics!!! He has so much scoring potential and it would be interesting to see how he would stack up against the best in the world. He’s proven he’s worthy of being there! Hope the rest of his season goes well and he’s able to accomplish all his goals 🙏 (and not to get my hopes up, but the younger sister also sounds very talented…maybe this whole family can save US skating?)
He is adorable. Enjoyed this so much..
Dave, you are an amazing interviewer! You went through all these questions so fast and it was everything we wanted to hear. I wasn't super familiar with Ilia before but I just know he is the future of US (and international) figureskating 😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Indeed it was a good interview for both sides!
I totally agree-Dave was focusing on the details we would never find out ourselves, mainly technical issues -double quads, Arutunyan camp, future and etc. And not rubbing the salt with his reaction to not making the Olympics.
i’ll be following ilia’s career closely. great interview!
❤️
This was amazing I can’t wait to see more from him. He seems like a great and truly a genuine person excited for him at worlds. All the love from Sevilla Spain❤️
❤️❤️
Thank you Dave. Great interview.
Dave Lease, you are an excellent interviewer. We are lucky to have you.
I really enjoyed the interview! What a talent!
Great interview - thanks TSL!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Next Olympic champion.
Loved this interview! Love Ilia!!! 😍
Can't wait to see him at Worlds this year!
Oh he's so charming, aside from being exceptionally talented! I'm really glad to know that he has a good team behind him who are helping him reach and even surpass his potential. I will be looking forward to this man's future competitions.
Killing it Dave! Can’t wait to see what’s to come from him.
❤️❤️
Very interesting interview 👍 thanks for letting us get to know Ilia.
Glad you enjoyed it
He's very articulate, he didn't "um" or "uh" at all in this interview
He did say “like” a lot lol 👀
I'll say this on every post: he SHOULD be going to the Olympics!
You and every other person! :) As much as we can wish, they had to stick to the criteria previously announced (over 1.5 years ago!). Nationals is only one data point among others so without being unfair, there was no way to justify putting Ilia (vs Jason or Vincent or even Nathan had he bombed at nationals!). Maybe criteria will change in the future so but for this event, it had to be this way IMO, else would have been unfair change selection process last minute.
@@1chienandalou I feel like they put this "criteria" in place so they could pull stunts like this.
Great interview Dave. It is nice to hear Ilia talk about both skating and his life. He definitely put it all together at nationals and look forward to his next event(s).
great interview Dave, thanks !
❤️❤️
Great interview Dave! Thank you! Ilia is very likeable! Down to earth, hard working.. would have been nice to see him compete in the Olympics..
Glad you enjoyed it
This is soooo refreshing after euros! Thanks so much tsl!
Glad you like it!
That was my thought too! Needed something after that atrocity that was judging
Good interview Dave! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Delightful interview!!
A post Euros surprise, thanks Dave!!
🙏🙏
Great interview. What a likable person he is. Great to see the depth in USA men’s team.
I'm going to miss him in the Olympics
💯
Perfect timing:)
Omg what a great suprise 😍
❤️❤️
Молодец, Илья, очень впечатлил и понравился на Чемпионате, красивые программы, вдохновенное катание, прекрасные прыжки. Очень жаль, что не увидим на Олимпийских играх. Успехов, удачи, будущих побед
this might be my favorite sweater so far! parabens
🙏🙏
Looking forward to his future in skating.
Amazing interview Dave. NBC should take note on how to ask questions that are specific, but respectful with a shot of getting some tea. Brilliant. Loved that he like soccer back “when he was a kid.”
Great job, Dave!
ugh… i love that jason is going, but you can’t deny that everything is SO MUCH easier when you’re young. Ilia could have been the breakout star that Gracie was on 2014 and Mirai was in 2010
As much as we can wish they had to stick to the criteria previously established over 1.5 years ago. Since nationals is only one data point they look at, there was no way to justify putting Ilia in and kicking out Jason or Vincent (or Nathan had he bombed at nationals!). Maybe criteria will change in the future so someone like Ilia can qualify but for this event, it had to be this way or else would have been unfair to everyone else to change selection process last minute
Wow...you have been busy. Dont ever stop
Great interview very well handled giving us a chance to see what a grounded and sensible young man he seems to be!
Ilia is probably also happy he wasn't asked something inane like what's your favorite marvel movie or BTS.
Yes it was a great interview!
Two words, the future! This guy is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to see his improvements over the next few years
Same here! Polina Edmunds said that he's not the future, he is NOW based on what he's done at the US. She watched him in person and was completely blown away to see him execute 6 flawless quads with ease and flow plus his SS and musicality were good too even though he can still improve because of his age. She also thought that he should have been sent to the Olympics.
@@tw5543 I agree but he does not have much international appearances which makes it hard. That’s why I said he is the future. He is the now but he needs more experience competing in my opinion
Great interview.
🙏🙏
What a pleasant surprise!
Should have gone to the Olympics for sure.
Many agree with you
I agree!
Ilya Malinin is a hereditary figure skater.
Ilya's parents is Russian. Mom, Tatyana Malinina, was a Russian figure skater, then she competed for Uzbekistan. Ilya's dad, Roman Skornyakov, also a Russian figure skater, played for Uzbekistan. But they trained in Russia, then in America.
Tatyana Malinina began skating in Novosibirsk under the guidance of her father Valery Malinin. Since 1988 she trained in Pervouralsk with Igor Ksenofontov. She performed at allied competitions, and after the collapse of the USSR, at Russian ones. Since 1993, she has represented Uzbekistan. In 1994, she received a severe ankle injury, but was able to fully recover from it.
In 1998, Ilya's parents moved to America. Tatyana won the NHK Trophy Grand Prix series tournament (1998, Sapporo), and then the series final (1999, St. Petersburg). In the same season, she became the first ever winner of the Four Continents Tournament (1999, Halifax) and won the gold medal of the IV Asian Winter Games (1999, Gangwon-do).
She competed at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics but was forced to withdraw after the short program due to the flu.
Ilya is a figure skater in the third generation.
His performance at the American Championship is no accident. This is a regularity.
It seems that the fate of Ilya was sealed before birth. His destiny is to skate. And he loves it. He skated at the American Championships and smiled. It's so wonderful.
Thank you for the info, sounds like Ilia was born to be one of the greats. He said his mother is the one who pushes him the most, now it all makes sense.
The Russian in him in shinning so hard!! As a half-Russian myself I appreciate how Russian he is. Some of these comments!
Hope you enjoy the interview
@@TheSkatingLesson I did!!! And thank you for doing them!!
He’s Uzbek right not Russian
@@katherinetan4587 His mother was born in Siberia and then the family moved to Uzbekistan. Actually many Russian people were forced to move to other Republics. Judging by the name alone, both parents have Russian, not Uzbek background. But they competed for Uzbekistan, as the rivalry and politics in Russian FS are as strong as in many other countries of the world.
What a great interview! Gonna go check out his 4-4 combo. What in a slap in the face that must have been for the us federation 😂
Love that Ilia doesn't seem to be rushing his progress, though! We've learned a lot from the wipe-outs in the men's quad revolution circa 2017-2018 😅
Yes!!!!
Love him.
Ah this was an unexpected gem
What an adorkable young man!
❤️❤️
@@TheSkatingLesson Thanks! It is pretty obvious that Russian is the language of his heart, and I wonder sometimes if some of the pauses were because of mental translation time. But OMG...that smile at the end. Heartbreaker, that one. He needs to not get stupid by getting involved with "crazy." (I tried very hard to give the PG version of that expression.......) ;)
He is going to worlds and he is 1st alternate for Olympics
Never clicked faster.
Красавчик Илья!!!
OMg this is refreshing after watching the Europeans
For me he was the best today men short program at World championship in France even if he is placed 4th.
Same opinion here! Still proud that he got 100 plus points at least making him the 9th man to score this high internationally. Future World and Olympic champion!
This is my come down from European ladies event
❤️❤️
Красавчик, тезка! Так держать!
Hmm.. Momma sounds like a very successful tiger mom. Such a great kid. Wanted to get the moves out of the way by age 6!!
the annoying thing is 4T+4T is totally undervalued in the system becomes all combos are addictive so it's hardily worth it to do give the risk =/ hope he goes for it anyway
A Super Nova is born at US Nationals 🌟
Omg yes!
Great questions Dave
I loved this interview! It's great to hear this kid talk. Definitely taking the humble approach which is probably best at this point..... He is the most talented skater I have ever seen.... I predict he will land a CLEAN quad Axel in the next 18 months. He will be the first one to land it clean. Nobody else is close enough. I would love to see him bust out a quad toe-quad toe combo and maybe a triple Lutz quad loop in his free skate at world's. I don't care what anybody else says, if he does that and the big guys don't deliver, this kid will spank them.... Whether the judges would allow what is a whole other thing to consider... I don't care whether this kid's parents are from Russia or Antarctica or wherever... He is a gift to sharing with his training, genetics and skating culture.... He is better than all the Russians from Russia. He grew up in America and goes to school like a regular kid and he is the greatest.... USFSA needs to pull their heads out of their asses and give this kid the best chance to be his best and let go of any political B.S. What they have done not sending him to the Olympics is a shame sending a guy instead who is never going to do anything more than he's already done for the last 11 years in senior. What were they thinking. All you have to do is watch that kid for about 2 seconds to see he is arguably the finest jumping technician ever and he's got the genetic heritage and cultural pedigree to be the best ever.....
He's adorable haha! I'm shipping Ilia and Isabeau, both names start with an I
they are kids.. pls dont ship them lol thats kinda weird
Does anyone have a link to his instagram live that happened btw?
My best wishes to Ilia, he is such a lovely person on top of being a brilliant skater!
I wonder why he decided not to compete for Russia, he for sure would be a champion there!
I think because he was born in the US and grew up here so moving to Russia to compete for them is a huge move for them. I also think his parents moved to the US in 2000 to stay here for good.
All American Boy 🇷🇺
