They sailed to places other people were afraid to go, their diplomacy managed to make them vital to every nation they encounter and eager to trade with them. The cities of Portugal still glow with the unparallel beauty of an architectural style that reflect their imperial past and are testiment of the oceanic character of such empire. They were ruthless in their colonies but they managed to maintain their controll for over 500 years were other stronger nations couldn't. The impact in the globe of Portugal now is silenced due the greater noise of bigger, more powerful neighbours and alliances that made them weaker in the long-term, but we should never forget that yet silenced the echoes of the Portuguese actions were the first notes on the concert that will eventually become the European era of domination, love to my Portuguese brothers and ¡Viva Portugal coño!

I think this guy forgot the fact that the portuguese have extremely well trained and reasonably well equiped troops and a geography that makes conquering the country very difficult, if some bridges get blown, there will be no way for salon to get ground troops through, the terrain is simply too complex and harsh, the entire country is pretty much a bunch of smallish mountains and valleys (except for the rare exceptions), our sea is mostly strong and large waves, which would make a marine assault much more difficult. Edit: either way, it's more likely that we would just eventually ally and attack someone who had been a stone in our shoe at this point in history
@@jacksilvapro he wasn't, he was a claimant, Portuguese nobility supported Antonio of the house Avis, prior of Crato, he was even crowned, forcing Felipe II to recall the already ancient Duke of Alba who destroyed Antonio in Alcántara in a battle in which the Spanish had barely 12k troops and the Portuguese 20k with more artillery both light and heavy. Other candidates were Catalina of Bragança, Joao I Duke of Bragança, Ranuccio Farnesse (arguably the most legitimate candidate but only 11 and living far away from Portugal), Emmanuelle Filiberto of Savoy and Maria of Hagsburg, nonetheless none has really strong claims so... Big army politics, low Portuguese nobility and the main population favoured a local ruler as getting tangled with Spain would effectively make them a province of a larger and more populous country and tie them to the endless fighting against the enemies of Spain, making them irrelevant politically in the world and threatening it's commercial routes (which is what finally happened) the highest nobility did actually supported Felipe II but was mostly because if they couldn't get the throne they preferred a Spanish monarch that will ecualize the power of all the Portuguese nobility, finishing finally with the house of Avis. I'm sure you didn't knew half of this.

1- you forgot how Spain is divided. if, for some reason, Spain declared war on Portugal, that would probably mean a civil war. Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque country would most likely declare independence and not support the war, and probably would become allies with Portugal. That would change things a lot because not only Portugal would have more people fighting for them but also the Spanish would be completely disorganized by fighting themselves. The Portuguese are also known for being tactically very intelligent and would help these revolts against Spain to happen. 2- You forget morale and will. The Portuguese are known for being overachievers and succeeding against all odds. There are many examples, such as the Battle of Aljubarrota and how the Portuguese managed to maintain their independence for so many years (the Spanish eventually made Portugal part of their country, not by force but by marital causes. The Portuguese managed to reclaim their independence). That being said, the Portuguese would fight for their lives. Not only them, but also their new allies (Catalonians, Galician and the Basque), which would have one more reason not to like Spain. And, in what comes to fighting and defending themselves, I cannot think of anyone braver than the Portuguese (my opinion of course). 3- You said at the beginning that this would be a war with no external powers. That doesn't happen. Portugal would probably have help from the English, that are very developed in what comes to technology and armament (their alliance is the oldest in the world), the Brazilian which would give Portugal a big gain of infantry units and also equipment, as Brazil has a really big army. Some more countries would help because I don't see Portugal doing anything that could justify Spain declaring war against them, so the mostly everyone would be against Spain. Also, Portugal had one of the larges empires ever, so they would have allies from everywhere (the Spanish too, but as I said, why would they help Spain if they suddenly declared war for no good reason?) So yeah this video is not very accurate. I might be wrong, of course, but the outcome of this hypothetical war could be very different. However, it would never happen. Both countries are very lucky to have each other as neighbour and civilians from both sides would not approve. Both countries would help each other if needed and they have a beautiful relationship. Edit: I completely agree that this video is about a hypothetical situation where there are no external powers helping neither Portugal nor Spain and it's just comparing the military power of each country. in that case, the Portuguese would be defeated pretty easily, and even if the scenario was the one that I previously referred to on this comment, the Spanish could still win probably. just not as easily as on the video
But thats exactly what it is a totally hypothetical scenario to purely compare both contries' military forces, not to simulate how an actual war with world politics involved would go.
In order to get a proper civil war you need at least 2 sides, a few rebel citizens are no match for a top tier professional army, this is not 1936 when the spain army split and fight eachother...

@@r.c.1881 Spain doesn't have enough guided bombs (less than 1000, SIPRI) to actually deal with those tanks and artillery guns. I know that you said no foreign interference, but I'm pretty sure that the Anglo-Portuguese treaty of 1373 should be considered to be a resource. But even without it, this video only shows numbers. Time and time again has it been shown that bigger and stronger forces don't always manage to achieve victory. Portugal is a great example of a smaller force beating a larger force several times.
thank you, just a remark, the anglo-portuguese treaty, in fact the older aliangence of europe, was always respected by the portuguese, in the oposite way, sometimes it was not quite, the UK often forgot in very sensitive times our pact. It is how it is.
@@SiRcErOn_YuLmEr don't you worry, the UK being one of the largest producers of armament & also one of the largest sponsors for war in the last 100 years, they would find a way to ''buy'' a war between whoever they find dangerous or profiyable.
"an easy victory" he says. The odds are against the Portuguese and they were always throughout the centuries. Now make a video explaining how Spain always lost against those odds and was never able to control Portugal through a war. In all those military tactics and figures you forgot to count on an extremely important factor: the will to defend your country vs. the much smaller motivation to invade a foreign country.
Nonsense! - Using the skilled troops stationed in Africa would mean exposing Ceuta and Melilla to a morroccan invasion. Should this happen and Spain would be forced to engage massive resources to secure its entire south flank and assure that the Strait of Gibraltar remained open for its navy. Remember that Morrocco did invade a pittyful spanish rock near the morroccan coast and Spain reacted. A conflict with Morrocco would also involve securing the Canary Islands. - Spain would have a hard time to convince its population that the war was on its interest whereas the Portuguese - as the offended party -, would have the moral advantage of fighting on the right side. - Spain would not be able to use troops stationed in the Basque Country and Catalonia as, if it did, it would risk an insurgency and the take over of power by the strong pro-independence forces. The two regions are wealthy and, in the case of Catalonia, have a vital role in the country's economy. In 1640, the Portuguese took advantage of the events in Catalonia to put an end to the dual monarchy that had existed since 1580. Independent regions would have international recognition and Catalonia might be backed up by France. - Spanish economy relies heavily on tourism. One could hardly imagine millions of people travelling to a country at war... - Terrorism might come to play, too. ETA - as part of a basque push for independence -, would ressurect and attack spanish targets, thus causing spanish Intelligence and police to divert resources. - Spanish invasion of Portugal would either be preceded or succeded by an invasion of british-held Gibraltar. This would bring Britain (and its navy!), into the war siding with Portugal.. - International community would not understand or back up the aggression. Spain would face cuts on supplies and economical sanctions. Loans would be cut, too. - Although Spain is a big country (according to european standards), it can be easily cut from the "outside": south atlantic coast by Morrocco; mediterranean coast by France, UK and Morrocco; north atlantic coast by France and the UK and, finally, the big atlantic front has the portuguese islands on its way. - Unlike Spain and its huge central plains, Portugal has a rugged surface. With the exception of the south side of Alentejo province, progression might not be that easy if the main roads were sabotaged.

@@jorgeadelprado If you knew a little about history, you would know that the Spanish king was the legitimate heir to the throne
@@jorgeadelprado Firstly, a large part of the nobility supported D. Em 1989 em Tancos numa aula de formação geral de infantaria paraquedista foi-me informado que o exército seria derrotado em 72 horas mas o povo e restantes soldados, demorariam pelo menos um século a serem subjugados. PORTUGAL PARA SEMPRE !!!
So Spanish temperament? Lol, Ill be a slaughterhouse. Thats why we are brothers now.
Seeing from a geographical point of view, you failed to mention that Portugal, in its center, has a lot of forest and vegetation which would give the chance for guerrilla warfare from the population. We are not keen on invaders. We'd lose but the enemy casualties would be catastrophic. But knowing how portuguese and spanish are, we'd probably stop fighting by the second month and just go get wasted on wine and chorizo(chouriço). May we always be brothers and sisters, nuestros hermanos 🇵🇹🇪🇦
Also, Portugal had one of the larges empires ever, so they would have allies from everywhere (the Spanish too, but as I said, why would they help Spain if they suddenly declared war for no good reason?)
So yeah this video is not very accurate.
Não dói, Joca. Juro pela minha morte!
But thats exactly what it is a totally hypothetical scenario to purely compare both contries' military forces, not to simulate how an actual war with world politics involved would go.
yes its not very accurate because he said my country will lose ...
In order to get a proper civil war you need at least 2 sides, a few rebel citizens are no match for a top tier professional army, this is not 1936 when the spain army split and fight eachother...
i'm portuguese and i love the spanish, we're brothers, we're soo similar in soo many things, we've lived in peace, and as we usually say it here "vivemos num cantinho do céu", literally translated to we live in a safe corner in heaven.
Geographically speaking portugal doesn't have too much to worry about, we are at the tip of a peninsula in the southwest of europe near the ocean, and our only neighbour is one of our best friends. We can't ask for better.
Your best friend is UK, we are not friends, we are much more, we are brothers, family. You might have better relationships with UK sometimes, as we have it with Italy, but you are our real Twin Brothers, siamese. Sometimes brothers argue, but if anyone attacks Portugal, we would fight for you like Savages. They would be fighting Both Viriatos, equally brave and competent in battle. Your record in history is just impressive you are natural sailors and fighters. Just like us.

@md ziden wrong. Spain would crush them.
@@grubbybum3614 Not really haha, Spain has a better military overall, but the numbers of Moroccan tanks and troops compared to Spanish ones would mean they couldn't Liberate Thier territories or invade Morocco. They could probably sink Thier navy and destroy most of Thier air defences though
@@grubbybum3614 Wrong again, no one wins Portugal takes over ...
@@ravenmusic6392 You cannot invade anything without air and sea superiority. All these moroccan tanks and troops would be bombed into oblivion after their navy and air force get taken down
@@r.c.1881 Spain doesn't have enough guided bombs (less than 1000, SIPRI) to actually deal with those tanks and artillery guns. Some 5,000 Spanish troops would be facing at least 60,000-70,000 Morrocan ones at the landing area, with upward of 100,000 - 200,000 troops in reserve. Morocco's army is designed for a land war against Algeria, not for one against spain over islands, which is why, while it's air force and navy couldn't endanger Thier Spanish equivalents, Spain could definitely not retake it's territory or invade Morocco.
Exactly
thank you, just a remark, the anglo-portuguese treaty, in fact the older aliangence of europe, was always respected by the portuguese, in the oposite way, sometimes it was not quite, the UK often forgot in very sensitive times our pact. It is how it is.
@@moitavide6652 But you forgot Gibraltar : if Portugal becomes a province of Spain, the UK would fear for its territory of Gibraltar too.

Don't forget our english brothers, the oldest army brothership

That treaty held Portugal back so much that you are an obscure joke to the world.
@@phillip_iv_planetking6354 it wasn't incorporated by force, or at least not by an invasion war.
@@tcarruco Really?
So the 40,000 troops Spain invaded with were what?
The battle fought near Lisbon "Alcantara" is what?
It's history get over it.
Nonsense!
- Using the skilled troops stationed in Africa would mean exposing Ceuta and Melilla to a morroccan invasion. Should this happen and Spain would be forced to engage massive resources
to secure its entire south flank and assure that the Strait of Gibraltar remained open for its navy. Remember that Morrocco did invade a pittyful spanish rock near the morroccan coast and Spain reacted. A conflict with Morrocco would also involve securing the Canary Islands.
- Spain would have a hard time to convince its population that the war was on its interest whereas the Portuguese - as the offended party -, would have the moral advantage of fighting on
the right side.
- Spain would not be able to use troops stationed in the Basque Country and Catalonia as, if it did, it would risk an insurgency and the take over of power by the strong pro-independence
forces.
ETA - as part of a basque push for independence -, would ressurect and attack spanish targets, thus causing spanish Intelligence and police to divert
resources.
