  • By far one of the most powerful Federation starships, the Galaxy class is only surpassed in firepower by the Sovereign and Prometheus classes. Other ships of notable strength include Defiant, Nebula, Akira and of course, the upgraded Excelsior class Uss Lakota.
    Clips from Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek 7: Generations.
    Enjoy !

    My favorite part of the Galaxy class is watching the two little lights on the phaser banks meeting up at the firing point before actually shooting the beam. It’s such a cool little detail.

      Ok, I can solve this debate. Phaser arrays have variable power outputs ranging from a slap to the face to full on evisceration to the nth degree. Most of the phaser shots from Enterprise, Galaxy, or anyone of said class are using this. Enterprise is inconsistent because if she used the full ability of her phaser arrays full time, she'd be ludicrously overpowered and would ruin the feel of the show.

      They're the Star Trek equivalent of the Warhammer 40K Commisar waving his sword around while looking out of the huge baneblade tank yelling "Bing me closer! I want to hit them with my sword!"

    The Galaxy-class starship tends to find itself outmatched by other ships of its size when it comes to battle, but that's during peacetime. Starfleet prefers to have its crews researching things and making peaceful contact with other races, not fighting. As such, they make room for sensor arrays and holodecks where other entities might put a thicker hull, shield generators, power cores, and beam emitters. However, from what I understand, Galaxy-class ships are designed for modularity. It takes a relatively-short time in drydock to repurpose them exclusively for something specific, such as ass-kicking. Start a war with the Federation and you'll find that all of those big softie pushover Galaxies turn into nightmares more quickly than you expect. Is it carrying tons of fighter craft (you forced Starfleet to start building those and now they're good at it), thousands of assault troops, or enough phaser batteries and torpedo launchers to level half of your fleet? The Galaxy-class can perform any of those battle roles disturbingly well with a few quick refits...but Starfleet would rather explore than fight, so gigantic science vessel it is. Just don't push it, buddy. You wouldn't like humans when they're angry.

The only canonical ships built explicitly for warfare are the Defiant, Defiant II, and the Valiant, all in the same class. The Sovereign class ships are clearly more combat capable than previous large classes of Federation vessel, but it's still not a warship. It's got every bit the same amount of research and exploration potential as a Galaxy class, just with three times the firepower.

    • @foxdameron9401
      @foxdameron9401 8 років тому +59

      +Zephyrbal It may not be a warship, and I agree with literally everything you said, but you do have to admit that the Sovereign class was designed with the Borg threat in mind, and therefore a warship by default, even if it wasn't officially dedicated to war or classified as such. It wasn't designed as the most powerful vessel ever created by accident or anything. It was designed to be the strongest and best defense the federation had to offer in case of attack, and that is pretty much the definition of a warship. Exploration is just it's day job.

      I know but that shouldn't have been the overwhelming factor in the fight even without sheilds the d massively outgunned the bird of prey and against one that was not manoeuvring or cloaked it should be more than capable of wiping it out with out Shields. the odyssey was without Shields when she was destroyed and she received much more of a beating from ships of a much newer and higher calibre than an outdated BoP before she was destroyed and even that was only due to a kamikaze run. It would have been a much more believable fight if they showed then hitting the engines first and manoeuvring to a blind spot in the weaponry or at least remaining mobile rather than just sitting there tanking it out

      Lexington73300 Yeah, tbh i just had an idea on how you could have saved money, made it a bit more exciting and explain a plot hole from the undiscovered country. Have the klingons use a BoP like what Chang had and make it be able to fire while cloaked and instead of worf using technobable to lower their shields say they were decommissioned because that technobable disabled their cloak, and then they blow it up but have to abandon ship due to the damage as with them no longer being constricted to show the BoP moving they can have the torpedoes hit areas like the nacelles, engines or deflector dish that could seriously damage the drive section enough to be forced to abandon ship in the saucer.

    • @class87fan54
      @class87fan54 7 років тому +2

      According to Memory Alpha, it was the Venture. The Galaxy was the ship seen exchanging fire with a weapons platform earlier in the battle. I have a theory on the extra phaser arrays on the Venture's nacelles. Starfleet might have leaned from the Enterprise's loss at Veridian III, and gave the Venture extra arrays as an experiment to give the Galaxy-class more firepower on the aft section. The arrays must not have worked properly, so they were removed a couple of years later. Hence why the Venture doesn't have them in her later appearances.

    • @class87fan54
      @class87fan54 7 років тому +3

      Yeah, the arrays were a leftover from "All Good Things...". Curiously, the 4ft Enterprise-D model was restored to it's proper appearance, without the arrays, for it's appearance as the Odyssey in "The Jem'Hadar", but they were put back on for it's appearance as the Venture in "The Way Of Warrior". A funny thing to watch out for in "Sacrifice Of Angels" is that the CGI model of the Venture used in the battle scenes doesn't have the arrays, but the ship appears to have regained them when she reaches DS9. This was simply because the shot from "The Way Of The Warrior" was re-used.

The Enterprise shot back and almost immediately took out its forward shields.

      +Oscar Banuelos Well there was that one episode in TNG where a ship had locked onto the Enterprise with lasers, which, judging from their reactions, was almost comical in its futility.
      So, the debate of whether a Star Destroyer or the NCC-1701-D would win in a battle, they only need to reference that.
      Star Trek shields offer more resistance than turbo-lasers could ever hope to overcome, and a phaser would, by that token, smash through Star Wars shields as if they didn't exist at all.

    Refitting a Galaxy-class for increased firepower would actually be very easy. If you eliminated the extravagant crew quarters and all the non-essential rooms (cargo holds, arboretum, school, etc...) you could pack rather a lot more weaponry into a ship that size. However, it was actually the Nebula-class that offered the most potential (not generally seen onscreen). It had a swappable secondary module easily the size of an Excelsior-class's saucer section which could be anything from a sensor pod to an expanded weapons array.

      I always thought the Galaxy class could easily be transformed from a ship of exploration into a sort of battle carrier. All that internal space could easily hold troops and vehicles (Peregrine Class fighters, for example). That and plenty of firepower to get into hostile space with a battle group, orbit a planet, and attack/garrison it, while defending itself on top of providing fire support to troops on the ground.
      I'd think they would have retrofitted the Galaxy class to take advantage of that internal volume for combat purposes, and make it a real ass-kicker.
      But 1v1 against a hostile ship with solely ship-ship combat design? She wasn't a great fighter.
      It's like a F-22 v a F-35. The F-35 is more versatile and capable at multirole missions, and can definitely fight if need be, but the F-22 is by far the superior fighter.

      That was a specific test, intended to explore and diagnose problems, it wasn't intended as a fair 1v1. Don't get me wrong; I like the concept of the Lightning II, but it's still totally unproven, and way overbudget. In the end, it could either be incredible, awesome, a real aviation game-changer. Or it could be the worst military design disaster in recent history. I think it's a case of how hard we want the former over the latter...

    You have to remember, ships at the time, and particularly Galaxy-class starships were NOT warships. They had weapons basically for defense. We were not warriors or conquerers. That's a good question. You would think that a 24th Century starship could outgun any vessel conceived during the Kirk era regardless of how powerful it is. But even the Picard Enterprise was not a warship so it is possible that the Dreadnought might have some weapon systems so potent that even a Galaxy-class 24th Century ship might have some problems. Shield technology, alloy development, plus we really didn't get to see ALL that the Dreadnought was capable of...except being able to blow a Constitution-class Enterprise away...

      3.) Who would Captain said opponents? Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway were all different types of personalities and command styles 'for their circumstances'. What/which would suit an actual warship?

      She has the longest phaser array in the entire fleet (aka the most emitters, by far), rapid fire photon launchers (which by the way seem to be at least on par with the Sovereign's torpedo launch capacity [see Nemesis battle scenes]) and she has 2.5x the volume of a Sovereign class! The Galaxy is no under performer when it comes to combat :P

      Easiest way of explaining.
      The Galaxy class was a flagship multi-role scientific hotel. It was a point of prestige to build one for the starfleet, and even more to command one as a captain. How many holodecks did it have again. And massive cargo holds. And large scientific sections?
      Then war came, and all that unnecessary luxury was stripped down in favor of more generators, shield emitters, more DAKKA!
      And presto, one of the most powerful battleships to fly the Alpha Quadrant was born

      Well, looking at it from a logical (as well as story-aware) standpoint in STO, the Venture really is just a mean version of the Galaxy xD.
      Well, any and every ships can run on a skeleton crew. The problem is continuing to fight. A skeleton crew is just enough to 'function'. As in fly. Maybe defend, but not against an equivalent vessel.
      For example, (citing a 'canon' appearance)... in the game ST: Bridge Commander, on the first mission you come across USS Sovereign, running on skeleton crew, escorted by two Klingon BoPs and shadowed by two D'Derix. From the conversation I remember, it was made clear that because it was a) such an advanced vessel, and b) running on skeleton crew, it was left nigh defenseless (Ergo Klingon Honor Guard) and practically impossible to repair on the go. It had to go back to starbase... 51? I dunno, I haven't played it in forever.

The Galaxies during TNG's time had a ton of stuff that aren't very useful in combat, like civilian living areas, schools, diplomatic guest quarters, theaters, tons of scientific equipment, etc. They probably had most of that stuff taken out and replaced with extra weapons or hanger bays for fighters during the Dominion War.

      ***** Yeah....they probably evacuated any families stationed on them and transferred all power from the science research lab places like stellar cartography, arboretum, etc. into shields and phasers....now if only they thought to put ablative armor on those Galaxies as well so that, like the Defiant-class it can still take a fair amount of punishment even after shields are down then those Galaxies would've been real tanks in the war :)

      ***** It reminds me of one author's rendition of how the mirror universes' Enterprise D would appear. In the book "Star Trek : Dark Mirror" the Terran Enterprise was outfitted with armor plating, roughly double the amount of phaser arrays of the prime universe D, only one science laboratory, two tactical stations as opposed to just one, four times the number of photon torpedoes, one holodeck used for training, no civilian luxuries, and an insanely huge reactor core that actually took a turbolift to scale - whose power was diverted to strengthening the shields.
      I'd imagine the war-ready Galaxies of the Dominion War to be comparable.

      _TNG: Yesterday's Enterprise_ had a Galaxy-D warship. _TNG: Parallels_ briefly had piles of Enterprises from alternate universes, some configured as pure warships.
      But none of them looked particularly impressive. That big tub just doesn't make a decent combat platform.

      I presume Galaxy-class in Dominion war simply transfer those extra power into the two big-f**king-phaser array on the saucer section and carry extra photon torpedoes, but not much else is done.
      Though, I believe the most useful aspect of Galaxy-class is, as the ship has facility equivalence of a mobile starbase, they became the fleet's command vessel. Those extra spaces could fit entire command staff without interfering with shipboard operation. (I still don't get why in "Sacrifice of Angle", Sisko command the fleet in the Defiant rather than on dedicated command center on one of those Galaxy)

    That's one thing I've always found so interesting about the federation starships, Starfleet especially, they're not designed as dedicated combat vessels, but can go toe to toe with other races starships designed solely around combat, like warbirds.
    It's a shame the federation doesn't consider an entirely defensive based fleet, built soley around reacting to threats that are held in reserve of different sectors.
    It wouldn't be militaristic and at least they'd have some proper defences.

    The Galaxy Class Starship was an impressive ship in it's day, but there are more impressive and lethal ships currently. The Sovereign Class, for example. Why weren't there any Sovereign Class vessels in the Dominion War? Those Quantum Torpedoes would've ripped through most of the Jem'Hadar and Cardassian ships.

      David Brown i think they were barely building them or only had a few available. They used a ton of galaxy class and excelsiors

      They were used in the battle, at least one. However, there were at the time only 12 Sovereigns total across the galaxy.

      @@phantom117b4 VERY resource-heavy. Starfleet built 12 originally, 6 fully assembled, and another 6 on hot standby...Obviously that ratcheted up during the war....

    I love how sometimes it fires out of the forward torpedo port. Also, some of the scenes are where it eventually gets it butt kicked. Their biggest problem is that they are slow to attack and attack with as little firepower as they can.
