Sing saying the notes while playing the finger charts is critical for ear training, but not the most fun. The most challenging aspect of this is doing things that are not as stimulating as playing your favorites songs. But in the long run it will lead to full expression on the guitar which is unlimited stimulation.
This is why it's good to know what makes a chord and not just learn them by rote. Even if it turns out that when playing a particular style we may gravitate more to a limited selection of chord shapes to get a particular sound/effect.
