    Nice rigid mill you have there, James. Retired now. Worked my entire career in the forging die machining trade. Know how tough that steel is. Great job!

    The carbide inserts were doing a good job, all things considered

    Magna international uses presses like that. Huge beast machine. Squish a terminator no problem.

    Are these dies new or in for refurbishment? Thanks James for the effort you put into your content.

    Why did you do the boring dry? No coolant at anytime?

      I’ve found in face milling that coolant creates too much thermal shock and insert cracking

    Any reason for no liquid cooling? Oil/water mix? I assume this would save you some time switching inserts every 10 minutes.

    • @FeetusMcCarland
      @FeetusMcCarland 2 роки тому

      Some inserts are designed to be run dry. They have special coatings that form a boundary layer that insulates the insert from the heat. Using coolant interrupts that process.

    Erhh, wait, so you had 16:9 ratio video, but it got edited/uploaded as 4:3 ratio, so now I black bars top and bottom _and_ on both sides? Something went a little bit wrong here.

    Looks like lots of chatter. Is that because of hardness of steel?

    I think this is 2.5T 2500 kg.
    You have too thin slings for 2500T.
    Nice film, more please 😊.

    How hard was this piece?

    • @jamespark_85machiningtv
      @jamespark_85machiningtv  3 роки тому

      Hardness is more than twice that of regular carbon steel. When processed, it feels more hardness because of the added alloy elements.

    • @KiwiBassHead
      @KiwiBassHead 2 роки тому

      The weight refers to the force exerted by the forging machine (large hydraulic press probably) the die is used in. Same thing as calling a bottle jack a 2 ton jack. The jack is rated to lift 2 tons it does not weigh 2 tons.

    2500 ton=2500000kg Holy cow!!

    • @4wdguydrivesby
      @4wdguydrivesby 3 роки тому +2

      yeah, no, that's not 2500 ton.. depending on the grade, steel is around 8 ton per cubic meter. That at best would be around 1/3 of a cubic meter, so 2500kg, or 2.5 ton
