Thank you for the Clear explanation. I can now pretend i know something about the electric heating system when i meet my electrician tomorrow.

All very good, except for the fact that the radiators you mentioned, don’t actually radiate heat. They warm the air around them, which is replaced by cooler air. This is convection. The only possible exception is infrared radiators. Whilst the infrared rays are technically radiated, the body of the unit warms up and causes convection.

Hi Howard. You’re right, electric radiators do warm the air around them, creating heat through convection. However, it is also true that they heat through radiation. Electric radiators are able to store heat - whether this is through internal stones, thermal oil or aluminium elements, and these heat-retaining mediums emit radiant waves.
It’s confusing, as some electric panel heaters are often described as “radiators” when they do not actually produce any radiant heat. Panel heaters only heat through convection, not radiation, as they are not able to store heat.
Rest assured that all of the electric radiators we sell live up to their name - they do produce radiant heat, emitting around a third of their warmth in this way. The only totally convection-based heating products on our website are our panel heaters.

Any object above absolute zero (-273 deg C) emits electromagnetic radiation across a spectrum of wavelengths depending on its temperature and surface properties. Search "black-body radiation" for more details. Most commonplace objects can be approximated as black-body radiators.

@@jeffgough8862 all very good, but, if I’m investing in an electric radiator, I’d rather like it to radiate heat, not any form of electro magnetism.

@Howard Skeivys you don't get to choose - physics does it for you - the radiator radiates - clue's in the name. But don't worry - all that EM radiation (=light, =radio, =infrared, all the same just different wavelengths) gets absorbed by the matter in the room (the air, the table, you) and so heat is being transferred from the radiator to your body. There is no other kind of radiation at play here (the only other kind is high-energy particles from radioactivity, which, thankfully, don't come out of electric heaters!). Rest assured the 2kW of heating power, or whatever, all ends up in the room somehow.

If you don't mind spending £500 a month on electricity buy electric radiators.

Excellent presentation. Sadly the totally irrelevant, pounding background beat hinders understanding of an otherwise first-class explanation.

Storage heaters? This is a kids guide with very little useful facts.
    Rubbish.
