  • Excerpt from another impro/training session at the Magdeburg Cathedral, played on Feb 18, 2016. Since the air inside the cathedral was pretty cold and I had to struggle with quite a number of detuned pipe ranks, I decided for "Blue Pipes" as the CD title.
    It's the "full blast" version of • [7.1ch] Woody - Who Wa... .
    Stereo 320kpbs MP3 Download: via.woody-mc.de/to/TytRxQ3fx2A...
    WPOA at ContreBombarde: www.contrebombarde.com/concert...
    Replayed at the WPOA: www.contrebombarde.com/concert...
    Like all my other recordings, the music is completely improvised and/or replayed by ear, so there is no sheet music available.

    WoodyofmC,when the organ plays so loudly it fells like your in a fanfare or something.

    • @WoodymC
      @WoodymC  4 роки тому +3

      Yeah, almost. Like I mentioned in an answer to your comment on another video, the recording was made upstairs on the organ balcony, i.e. directly in front of it.
      Down in the nave, the volume of course is somewhat lower and more evenly distributed. Back in 2018, I did a recording where I was lucky to have some friends with me who kept an eye on the mics that were placed in the aisle. IMHO, the result was much smoother from a "normal listener's perspective", including more ambiance.
      Here's the playlist, if you'd like to decide for yourself: ua-cam.com/video/B4ytij2iWjc/v-deo.html
      For that link, I preselected track no. 8 in the list since that one starts on a whispering low volume, which more or less gradually increases towards the end, where quite a number of stops is utilized -- including the high-pressure "Tuba Mirabilis" stop (which is the loudest stop in that organ and can easily speak over all the rest of the stops). --- You've been warned. ;)

  • @thecorknicehero3073

    I have been watching this video of yours for over a year now and my jaw dropped to the floor cause my most favourite stop the tuba mirabilis came in at around 5:17. As you mentioned in one of my comments over a year ago, definitely this stop was so loud that I couldn't actually here the full organ in the background. It really made the final piece so sooooo entertaining and fanfare-alike.
    Last but not least I wanted to give you a massive congratulations to you for playing who wants to live forever by my favourite band Queen. It really suited the organ so beautifully. ❤️❤️❤️ I'm also really obsessed about the pieces you played from this organ in Magdeburg.
    Cheers and happy Christmas and a happy new year. 👏👏👏

      Hearing you say that this is one of your fav pieces does indeed make me feel happy -- I can remember that pretty ice-cold session on the organ bench with around 4°C and my fingers almost freezing to death, haha. On top, some detuned pipes made this a somewhat painful experience to any listeners' ears, but nevertheless I think it was worth capturing exactly that outcome instead of simply giving away that chance forever. I'm glad that there are people out there like you who -- despite all the bumps and scratches -- can enjoy the hidden beauty that's still buried in the recording. Thank you so much! Can this Organ playing really loudly cause hearing loss?
    It gives me a temporary blockage in my ears when I listen to it on my headphones at full volume 🎧
    Do you know why?

    • @WoodymC
      @WoodymC  2 роки тому +3

      Amazing...Cool Dude, I'm still impressed that you don't get tired of asking the same question over and over... ;) And nope, I have no clue why this may cause a temp blockage in your ears. However, the loudest stop in that organ, the high-pressure "Tuba Mirabilis", could impair hearing loss if you're directly in front of it. Gladly, this is very unlikely to happen since you'd have to climb up to the rooftop of that organ, where these truck horn shaped pipes are located.
      But even if (or: especially, because) you're listening to a _recording_ where you can alter the original volume to any arbitrary level: Please remember to "listen responsibly", i.e. I'd recommend to keep the volume at a non-painful range. First, because you can't reclaim at an old age what you've destroyed in your youth...I'm referring to your hearing abilities here. And second, because you'd like to enjoy the music, don't you? Overdoing that loudness thing won't take you any further, and especially not if it's getting painful.

      That's the downside of playing by ear: With "just relative pitch", picking up the original key is impossible for me to do without the sheets. That's why I usually transpose it to a key which is convenient for me to play -- and this, in turn, has some interesting side effects on the outcome of the piece. Indeed, it's fun to hear that listeners _can_ pinpoint the difference! 🙂

      BTW, did you have a look at my pinned comment? The (second) recording mentioned there is definitely in the original key -- since I backed the original piece with my pipe organ.
      A 7.1 surround FLAC file is available for download, too! If you have the chance to listen to this on a surround setup, I'd highly recommend to prefer this to the stereo version...much more detail will be your reward.
