    No Tonny, stop being the martyr. Nikon has sent even Jared Polin's equipment for review. Also, everybody was critical, basically. Now, there is a difference between being critical and saying Nikon will be broke in a few years, that they will never recover, etc. Polin has the advantage that it's extremely emotional. You are not, so they probably perceived ill intention. I don't blame them. The stuff doesn't stop there you say that Canon f11 teles were amazing and compared them to Nikon's super primes concluding they were too heavy when Nikon had the 300mm pf and the 500mm pf back then "light" lenses. The list goes on. I don't believe Nikon should continue with this. I also believe you have shown that when it comes to products you are going to try to be objective, but don't say it was about a bad review, it was about your editorial content.

    Pixel shift combined with macro shots using the Z 105mm f/2.8 VR S can produce some insanely detailed macro images when using a tripod. Yes, you can upscale the regular macro shot with software but you can also do that to the pixel shift image for even more insane up-close images if you don’t mind the resulting file size. Also, if you want better heat dissipation for better video specs you have to expect a larger body so that’s not a downside.

      @aaronmeyers451 15 днів тому

      I have a nikon Z8 with pre-release and it sounds amazing but in its current state it's really not. So the pre-release only captures jpeg files only. If you are using 2 card slots, one for raw and one for jpeg fine, the pre-release captures are written to the jpeg card. This means when you're sorting your good images and find a photo or a group of photos where you think pre-release might have saved you, you have to pull out a separate card and search through that card for the files. Its a pain in the ass. Also you can not upscale it to saving raw instead of jpeg files or change where those files are written.

    I'm interested in it's high ISO image quality as a lot of people use the Z6 range for astrophotography. Will it get the Z8 starlight mode and illuminated buttons? Will it have a sensor shield? Is it correct that Nikon hasn't improved the existing autofocus issues in the Z6 range with firmware updates like they have done for the Z8 and Z9?

    • @phelanwolf6747
      @phelanwolf6747 17 днів тому +2

      Since the camera has a mechanical shutter there is most likely no space for a sendor shield.
      The issues with subject detection and tracking were due to weak processing power, that cannot be fixed via firmware.
      AF itself has never been an issue, it is just that people do not differentiate between AF and subject detection and tracking.
      Subject detection and tracking controls the AF, but if the subject detection is wrong the focus is wrong. You know that you do not have to use subject detection, it is just more convenient if it works well.
      That being said Nikon did improve subject detection and tracking on the Z6 but not to the same extend as on the Z8 and Z9.
      One of the real issues of the Z6 which is almost never mentioned is the "slideshow" (~10fps) in the EVF when holding down the shutter button in H+ mode, it makes it impossible to track fast moving subjects. Let's see if Nikon fixed that even though most "influencers" never complained about it.
      If they did not fix that, the camera's high frame rate, readout speed and better subject detection and tracking are for shit unless you really like shooting hovering humming birds.

It would not surprise me to see a stacked sensor and possibly an updated processor. And with the reference to better color, I’m thinking 12-bit video (NRAW not ProRes RAW) and some sort of color boosted stills. I would love to see 16-bit but that’s not likely on a 24MP sensor. Even though going to FF means I have to get all new lens (except 1 EF), I was open to jumping ship but overall I think I like the R6 mk 2 better.

    Ya you might have been a little harsh on your criticism of the Z6/7 back in 2018 but the mark 2 versions are much different and the had they released the same AF firmware updates that we have now it would have been a pretty decent opening for them into mirrorless. Hopefully you get a fresh review of some Nikon equipment on the future.

    For me it would be the opposite of “switching teams”. I’ve still got a pile of F-mount glass, so I could use the adapter and put a Nikon mirrorless right to use from day one. Sure, I’d gradually move to Z-mount, but I don’t have to on day one. With Canon or Sony, I would. That would seal the deal for me.

    I think people need to keep their expectations reasonable here too. If this is in fact a $2500 camera, it may still be a baby Z8, but it will have some limitations. LIke you mentioned, possibility of a rolling shutter with the E-shutter but perhaps not as bad as the Z6 II / Zf, but not as good as the Z8 due to the likely sensor differences (Z6 III probably doesn't have a stacked sensor). Furthermore I think the Z6 III will obviously be more geared towards video as is quite obvious with the teaser, so photography advancements may not be as big (pre-release and improved AF are probably the two biggest features we may see for stills photographers, along with the increase in shutter speed to 1/16000s but that may have some caveats too -- like rolling shutter for the same reason).
    On the Zf, I'm just glad they put two card slots on it. But keep in mind that camera is not really a video camera (even though it shoots video). So I think if you get a decently fast UHS-I card (say 90 MB/s) that should be fine considering they no longer have lossless RAW so all files are pretty much 30-35 MB or less so the buffer probably doesn't fill as fast if you do use backup mode or you do sparse burst shooting like I do (like maybe 5-10 frames and then a break). I'm just glad they gave it a second card of some sort (gives me a bit of reassurance since I have lost images in the past to a single-card system and it was NOT fun, as it was from a family vacation). So slower is better than none in this case IMO. I could easily have seen them put just a single SD car dslot that was only uHS-I in the camera and making the excuse that it's a retro stills camera, not a sports camera (even though it's likely capable of such).
    I've been asking for internal memory now for many years. Even 16GB would be something, and could be used as an emergency backup or buffer overrun for if you run out of sapce on your cards while burst shooting. I think this could easily be done and I don't know why they don't bother unless they have some agreement with card mfrs to push memory cards, but even so, I think many people would appreciate a bit of internal memory for backup or "emergency" purposes (run out of space). They could even make it so it could only be used if a card is installed (ie. so you don't just use the internal memory as primary storage, just as a backup).
    The Z6 III will not be $2000 at launch, and if we base pricing only on regular price, it will match the R6 II (which is also $2500) although Nikon has undercut the competition in the past (with the exception of the Z8 which was a bit more than the A7R V and R5 at launch), but the Z8 is also just a minor step down from Nikon's flagship too, which they did undercut Sony and Canon on. So I think the Z6 III will be about $2300-$2600 USD but it may be priced so they can put it on sale to compete with the others down the line (like in 6 months), and taht's also why I think the Z8 was priced at $4k as well, so they could put it on sale to make it more attractive buy for people, but still make their margins.

    I agree on the theft protection, but I submit that Central Park is the last place in New York City your camera would get stolen. Once, I left my Canon R6 Mark II and my iPhone in my unlocked car for three seconds in Brooklyn and when I came back my iPhone was gone. True story, back in 2019 (Summer) I went to Central Park with my D7200 (no longer have) and a Tamron 150-600 G2 to shoot some birds and nature. On the way back downtown, I passed thru Times Square and I noticed a large crowd built up. It was like New Year's almost in the middle of the summer. What was happening is the Wallendas were performing their highwire act 25 floors above the street. The tightrope was suspended between two buildings - at one end the brother and the other end 3 blocks away was the sister. They were supposed to meet in the middle, but I got stuck too far north to see the midpoint. In any case I was able to get close shots of the brother at 600mm, with the only lighting from Times Square against a pitch black night sky. ISO 6000, f/6.3 (wide open), 1/60 sec HANDHELD with lens VR. Everyone else was shooting with their smartphones getting tiny dots of the brother on their screen. I was the only oddball there with an ILC and large lens. All the shots came out sharp, but I had to apply some NR and WB correction due to the weird lighting from the street. I do have an accessory tele lens to apply to my smartphone, but I have to try it.

I'm not sure how much was leak rather than speculation, but in any case, I can't say theres much here to stop me moving from Nikon d750 to Canon R6ii having done so much listening about the different mirrorless systems, generally gathering from many including you and Chelsea, Ken Rockwell and Polin, that Nikon is perhaps not the best new route for me, especially in regard to AUTOFOCUS innovation and performance.
    Being a stills shooter, I'm not particularly interested in the crazy high shooting rates and video capabilities, and that seems to be about all the Nikon enhancement seems to be offering - only a superior screen might good for me, but it seems that there's not going to be anything that will be of much benefit for me getting a great quality photo at this price point.
    Also I might say that the advert video that was linked in the email from Nikon was uninspiring to the point of being boring and a complete turn off. The end of an unbroken 44 year relationship with Nikon looks likely

However, with the transition to mirrorless, I switched to Sony. Having also used the Nikon Z6II in a professional setting, I can say that the eye recognition autofocus and other features did not provide reliability for my work, and it must be admitted that it is not up to the competition. I am very satisfied with Sony, specifically with the Sony A7 IV and the R series... I will never go back! For me, it's simply a matter of equipment, meaning what I need is just reliability at work, quality, and a good feel.

    Nikon shooter for a long long long time….like manual film cameras long. I don’t do video very often, so other than ergonomics, I am not sure the Z6III offers much more than the Zf already does, which I absolutely love….including the Zf’s nod to nostalgia. Instead, I think what I want from Nikon, is something akin to the small primes that Sigma puts out for the Sony E mount, but Nikkor S line quality. If those small primes could look like the manual focus Voigtlander Z mount optics, even better!
    All that said, damn I get tempted by the hype! Camera wise, I am probably holding out for a Z7III upgrade, if it goes to 60mp. I want the Z7III to, perhaps, be a more photographer centric, landscape/studio, camera versus a Z8 with many video features, which I rarely use. In this video age, I am not sure that will ever happen again.

In six month when Sony brings out the A7V will you apologize for not telling customers to consider waiting if their need is not immediate? Timing is everything IMHO. It doesn’t mean it won’t be a nice product and worth upgrading to if your a Nikon owner but in the greater scheme it’s important to point out the unique features that users should care about in six month, a year and even longer. The Z9 and Z8 had such features that haven’t been matched since the came out even with their late entry into the market. Take care.

If no one points out their products shortcomings, how can they learn improve (and get to the point where they find themselves today)?
