I had that same exact drivetrain in a 71 Centurion, ( think LeSabre ) what a sleeper twice as big as the Skylark and only a couple hundred pounds heavier that Cuda would have spotted me five car lengths and never had a chance, It won 14 street races in a row one Wednesday night in Van Nuys back in the day, wire hubcaps and all.

I'm surprised the Cuda could hook up with factory width tires. Those big blocks were heavy in the front. I also thought the 440 six pack and semi cud's came standard with Dana 60s. I think in 1970 there were 8 engine options for a Baracuda and you could order almost any combination of engine trans and rear end. Another great video!!
Yeah my dad has a green AAR clone, obviously not a 440. You can't drive that thing and hate attention, it even pulls attention from my 65 GTO, my brother's Challenger, Charger, the Darts, Dusters and the other cars we have when we take them all out for a cruise. Its that green man.. About the Buick, it will run the same with a 3.73 as it does with a 3.42, might lose 1-3mph, and a 3.08 will probably run the same. No need for a lot of gear when the BOP 455s. People always want to over gear them and then wonder why they don't run as fast. High 12s with the factory manifolds and those skinny tires isn't bad. Cool video as always, and a plus for the MPHG bit.
That went exactly a I expected. The Buick 455 is a low end torque monster, so it came out of the hole like a rocket, but the 'Cuda is sucking down almost 1400 cfm of fuel-air mixture at high rpm, and drove around it.
Thanks for another great shootout. More AMCs please!! Javelins, AMXs, Hornet SC/360s, SC/Ramblers, maybe a Rebel Machine or Matador Machine (or clone, I know there are VERY few real Matadors with the Machine package extant out there.) I appreciate the Kenosha Killers you've already featured of course. Thanks!
SC/360 just happens to be coming this week. Click on the Instagram link in the video description box and you can see what it looks like. unfortunately, there weren’t any SC/ramblers this year at the pure stocks, and there has not been a rebel machine for at least three years.
Someone should point out that in these Pure Stock Drags, cars are paired for elimination based on their time trial times, so these cars would not have competed against each other if their trial times had not been close. Also, the Buick may have originally been an 8.5 to one smog motor, but it's a 10 to one motor now, along with other mods allowed under the rules. I will add that it appears from the way its front end rose coming off the line that the Buick's chassis was better set up for drag racing than the Barracuda's. Both are very good running cars, and both would have been fast brand new, but neither of them would have run twelves right off the showroom floor.
Both cars running 12 second quarters ,both are dialed in and tuned perfect! Drivers getting them to launch out the hole know their vehicles. Buick looked like it was shot out a cannon! Cuda definitely weighs less than 3800 lbs!
Another great video! What would be super cool would be to find one of the master minds behind getting these cars to run this hard and have a before/after build up and dyno. I have a copy of a Hot Rod Magazine chart, June 1984 pg.40, listing all the times they tested on stock muscle cars with NONE running 12s and only 6 in the 13s, 70 Chevelle SS LS6454 and 70 Hemi Cuda both at 13.1 @ 107... SO, a bunch of these cars WAY over perform under the strict rules of this class. Love to see a build video!
There will be a future video talking about it, but here’s an article on one of the quickest cars that participates : www.hemmings.com/blog/article/animal-charm-1969-chevrolet-chevelle-300-deluxe/
@@CarsAndZebras Good article/link... that explains a lot. I've recently been watching these "pure stock" runs and enjoying them ...butt I don't recall many 'street tuned' and even "race-tuned" legal stock (NOT "pure stock"...but race "stock" class legal) cars of the day running the kinda times that similar "pure stock" cars do now. It looks like some current "pure stock" rules are as, or more, lenient than old race "stock" class rules in the 60's. That, combined with some modern tech, makes the difference from "pureR stock" as it was in the 60s...and showroom fresh road tests as run by magazines etc. It would be nice to find them and do an A-B comparison of the old "stock" clas rules to today's "pure stock" rules and as possible include some modern tech advantages too...If someone knows of such a comparison, a link would be appreciated. Amazing beautiful cars. They run better than I would have thought, especially the heavier Buick with lower compression. But I see this alot on your videos. With Olds 455s and Buick 455s maybe even Pontiac's, they seem to do just fine. I lived and dove those days and cars. Great memories and cars. Lots of education on your videos. Thanks.
The 455 motors proved you could beat the higher HP engines off the line, and you’d have them to the 1,000 ft Mark... but eventually the torque would fade at the higher revs.
Back in the day (70's) here in Salt Lake there was a Buick GS Stage 1 very often at the drags. If I remember correctly it had pretty high gears so it wasn't much off the line, but man that car really came on on the top end.
Awesome race. Love the Buick vs Mopar battle as it's one of the most talked about match ups in muscle car history. I've always been a die hard Mopar guy but I do have a soft spot for the Brand X GM products (Pontiac Olds and Buick).
And yet the HEMI dominated Nascar, Pro Stock Super Stock, Top Fuel, Funny car, and pretty much street racing. Where I grew up Ford, Mercury, Plymouth, Dodge, Pontiac, AMC, and Chevrolet muscle car's were everywhere. Muscle Buick's were a rare sight. I will admit that more Grandpa's and Grandma's drove Buick's, however.
Nice to see an E-body getting raced, they're all pretty much show queens now. Mopar people may be an odd bunch but E-body guys are almost as bad as Corvette collectors. Oh well their loss that they don't realize A, B, and E-body Mopars were basically the same cars just with different wheelbases and track widths.
There was actually a 1970 hemi Cuda that used to come out, but then he blew the motor. I believe he built it again to FAST drag specs/rules. Pretty crazy 👍
@cars and zebras that's awesome, I know there is a built-up Hemi Cuda that races it was featured in a 1320 video. Thing eats boosted imports like nothing and it's all motor...
I dont know much about modding internals but how would you increase compression without changing the internals or heads? Would it be using a different headgasket?
Years ago I read about a GS 455 that was running 10s in a different class. I dont remember what it was called, but the rules were that all parts had to appear stock, so air cleaner, intake, carb, exhaust manifolds ect had to be factory, but could be modified. Port and polish was allowed on heads, intake and exhaust. I think the bottom end was a free for all as well.
Probably was either FAST or Super Car. I don’t think there’s any Buicks currently that are running that quick, I’m sure there was in the past. But there are some L 88 Corvettes running in the nine second range and also a road runner in the 9s.

The Buick should have a quicker launch with 456 gears and all 3 times the Cuda caught the Buick and won
I got my 1st glimpse of a Cuda in 10th grade. An upper classman was revving his engine with his hood opened. I will never forget how beautifully that car sounded..
Another memory about the same time was a different friend getting picked up from school in an 87' Grand National with a higher per-formance chip installed on a rather chilly day. That thing set ya back in the seat if you get my inference. I've always loved these turbo cars. Boy you could hear em winding up and getting after it.
I am not sure what I like more the cars or your back story!!!!
Thanks for watching! 👍
I was always told that Mopar Big block's were Top End motors Guess they wasn't lying!!
Those 440s were definitely contenders!
That was especially true of the Hemis. Those engines love to rev..
@The Truth about Africa hurts Ive read that the hemi has most power at high rpm where as the 440 has torque down low. so seems like the 440 would be the most fun on the street? to each there own.
Great videos keep them coming. Would love to see this matchup 1970 style. Hemi Cuda against a Buick GSX might be the battle that ends a lot of debates
Such low RPM horsepower.. Those big engines were being choked in ‘71
Well you hit the nail on the head with Barracuda and Cuda owners their cars are nothing but the best and I'm a Mopar boy they won't even look at me in my a body demon..Too good!! Thanks once again......!!
That Buick 455 torque gets it out of the hole well but it's 440's horsepower that wins the MPH.
Buick 455s are tough to beat off the line for sure 👍
Cars And Zebras even with a boss 429
mopar go quite far
Miss my 70 CUDA with that 383 in it!!! Chase is the race!!! Would, always run'em down from behind to WHIP that ASSSZZZZZ!! MOPAR RUNNING HARD!!!!!!!!!
Joe Santana Don’t race at 1/8 mile tracks and you’ll be OK
@@glennfalzo3718, At least you still have one!! Nice!!! Back in 1984, built mine for around 8 grand. Those, were the days. Lost it, in 91 MOPAR, BABY!!!!
@@glennfalzo3718 I'm right behind you at 55. Use to always get pulled over by L.A.P.D!! What dod did I do, officer??? Nothing, I want to check your car out!! What's under the hood!!! Lol You guys scared the SHIT out of me!!!
High school 1978 had a green 1970 cuda 383 magnum. Never lost a race.
i had the 68 formula s 383 4speed.
Both cars impressed me. That was cool.
Glad to see a non-Stage 1 Buick. Very impressive runs in view of the transmission, gearing, weight, and horsepower disadvantage. Suggests a different outcome if it had a 4 speed. Love the Cuda with the vastly less temperamental 440-6.
Love the ‘71 cuda. My favorite year.
Dude... The Cuda drove around him on the big end all 3 rounds!!
I'm a MOPAR guy but always liked and respected those bad ass Buicks !! Matter of fact, I owned one ! Beautiful sled with STUMP PULLING POWER !!
All this juicy goodness on street tires? No cheater slicks? 😁 NICE
So juicy 💦
@@CarsAndZebras & yet, So Meaty... LOL 😂 😂 😂
Love that cuda body style. Looked like the wind was blowing in their faces. That flag was standing straight out. The GS has that flatter nose section.
There were some bad headwinds intermittently that day for sure
Yessss Cuda 😎👍🏻
Two gorgeous, classic American muscle cars. Those big block Chrysler engines were absolute beasts, though.
damn, running 12's stock. That's seriously awesome
I'd like to see the same race but use the 70 versions of each car. Interesting you'd choose the year that Buick dropped their HP a lot.
Thanks for watching! I believe the Dana 60 was only standard on the hemi cars. Optional on others
Buick 455 weighs 50 more pounds than a Chevy 350. Add some aluminum and really drop some weigjt.
6 pack driver sleeps at the light 3 times and still top ends that fast Buick. Impressive!
Beautiful machines.. That Buick would be really tough in the 8th.
I'm a Mopar guy but that Buick is Badass!!!
Wow, That Buick is one beautiful car!
True about the Buick 👍
That went exactly a I expected. The Buick 455 is a low end torque monster, so it came out of the hole like a rocket, but the 'Cuda is sucking down almost 1400 cfm of fuel-air mixture at high rpm, and drove around it.
3:73 are perfect for 500 ft lbs of torque! Extremely impressive it ran pretty deep into the 12s!!
Click on the Instagram link in the video description box and you can see what it looks like. unfortunately, there weren’t any SC/ramblers this year at the pure stocks, and there has not been a rebel machine for at least three years.
yes
Someone should point out that in these Pure Stock Drags, cars are paired for elimination based on their time trial times, so these cars would not have competed against each other if their trial times had not been close. Also, the Buick may have originally been an 8.5 to one smog motor, but it's a 10 to one motor now, along with other mods allowed under the rules. I will add that it appears from the way its front end rose coming off the line that the Buick's chassis was better set up for drag racing than the Barracuda's. Both are very good running cars, and both would have been fast brand new, but neither of them would have run twelves right off the showroom floor.
Awesome content. Please keep up the great work!!!
FYI there were 22 tests in the 15s and in case you think they were obvious dogs the 70 Chevelle SS396/350hp was 15.5 @ 90
There will be a future video talking about it, but here’s an article on one of the quickest cars that participates : www.hemmings.com/blog/article/animal-charm-1969-chevrolet-chevelle-300-deluxe/
BTW, have watched many of these vids and generally like them...
Torque gives the Buick a win in the 1/8th mile, but HP gives the Plymouth the 1/4 mile win
Cuda,Cuda,CUDA! Nice converter would have helped the Cuda a lot.
Best race I've seen in a while.
Appears as though the Buick bested in RT and/or 60ft...but the xtra 250 LB drags it down by 3/10ths and 3mph .
Be nice to see the slips
Pretty typical Buick off the line, hard to hold onto that lead against a 440.
find every good point on the buick but the cuda passed the finish first - 3 times
@@marioncobaretti2280 Buick was the “gentleman’s muscle car”. Stoplight to stoplight is where it shined. If there’s a two lanes to one merge 200 ft ahead from a stop, I’ll take the Buick. On a road course however, I’ll take the Mopar with a row-your-own tranny.
Very good race!! We can see who has more tork, but we also see how the six-pack shines!!
Awesome battle, mate! Plymouth power!
I am a Mopar fan. But I do love the look's of that Buick in them year's I think those were perfect cruising cars.
Thanks.
These are both beautiful cars.
Can't knock either one of those beautiful beast💘. I'd love to see how my 72 Riviera would run.
Bring it out to the Pure Stocks and find out! They match you based on ETs, so you go against an equivalent car.
The 455 motors proved you could beat the higher HP engines off the line, and you’d have them to the 1,000 ft Mark... but eventually the torque would fade at the higher revs.
Love them buicks comin from a mopar fan
the 440 mopar wedge is the most powerful wedge in the world, its undeniable, they breathe more carbs more air,win win
Back in the day (70's) here in Salt Lake there was a Buick GS Stage 1 very often at the drags. If I remember correctly it had pretty high gears so it wasn't much off the line, but man that car really came on on the top end.
Luuuv these cars! 😍
The sound effects etc. are hilarious! 😂
Awesome race. Love the Buick vs Mopar battle as it's one of the most talked about match ups in muscle car history. I've always been a die hard Mopar guy but I do have a soft spot for the Brand X GM products (Pontiac Olds and Buick).
Cool, never know which to pick,I love em all!
I'll admit the non Stage 1 GS did hold its own though..
Very true. Impressive car! 👍
it held its testicles while being beaten by a cuda
@@marioncobaretti2280 Fanboyeee much? What, are you 12 years old?
I called that one right.
Cuda caught up mid track & poured it on 🤘🤘🤘
4:48 is freakin hilarious
The sound that ice makes when she hits is unbelievable
The Cuda looks sooo much better .then the old man's Buick
My mom had a 68 buick lasabre and it did 98 mph in the 1/4 mile.
The 455 GS Buick 1970 was the hemi killer period.
Stage 1 was a confirmed hemi killer at Motor Trend magazine! 😎
That Buick is Beautiful!
Scotty Hudson
Couldn't you mill the head down?
To be giving up so much horsepower and compression to that 440 - that Buick sure made me proud , tore that ‘Cuda a new one out of the gate 3 for 3 !!
the 'cuda wasted time smoking the tires.....impressive 'cuda!
@@CarsAndZebras I think it was FAST, that rings a bell. It read about it in Hot Rod or something like 15 years ago lol
Love love love love this channel ❤ lol 😆
2 of my favorite engines!
I'm kind of surprised the GS455 isn't a stage 1...
IMO that would be a more even match for the 440 6bbl Cuda... Just Sayin...
👍👍👍
👍👍👍😎
The man responsible Ralph Nader has cut the balls off all muscle cars because cars are dangerous what a ham !!! I think the gs should of had a six pack carbs?
Both beautiful cars and very healthy!
MOPAR 440-6 vs. 8.5:1, 4070 lb. luxury Buick...sounds about right.
👍
The Buick actually was allowed to raise the CR by 1.5 points to 10 to 1 which makes a huge difference.
@@danmyers9372 ...which means the 440 has almost freaking 12:1 cr? Far cry over 10:1, I'd say!
Pretty evenly matched cars, it probably came down to the drivers.
I've seen in some of your videos the weight of the car includes the driver,is this always the case? If so can You tell us just the weight of the car?
I had to view this one again..such a classic match up (plus YT plopped it into my feed again :)
