What an amazing piece of machinery that was never designed to go that fast. Pure sound and just freaking amazing. I know I'm years behind here but I can't get enough of this.
This is riveting, even for those of us who know so little about Bonneville world-records...perhaps even more riveting for those of us who know so little! Exceptional.
I was there,to me this was one outstanding package! I could not keep myself from going back for another look. This is a awesome machine that is a REAL example of what salt racing is all about. THEY NAILED IT!!!!!
One of the most rock & roll videos ever. Love that sound & I love seeing old iron surviving its limits & emerging on the other side a record holder. That’s one pissed off straight 8
jagger -- get over yourself mate. if they wanted to break the sound barrier, or go ludicrous speed, they not only would've chosen a different powerplant, but a different chassis as well. it was never their intent to be the fastest on the planet. the point was to take an unlikely 50+ year old engine and push its limits to see what they could accomplish. fastest is not always the best. the ability to engineer something for a purpose other than what it was intended for is what makes the world go round. i applaud these innovators, and the gear heads from generations past setting speed records with what other people called "junk." the world needs more folks like this in it.
@O.P. Yates Yeah, I was being sarcastic about the general lack of aerodynamics among mid century American cars. But I learned a thing or 2 about aerodynamics from your post, and I assume that "ground effects" type add ons are designed to reduce some of those problems(on real race cars, not necessarily on low powered, everyday commuter cars owned by 17 year olds with too much parent-supplied discretionary income).
My dad had a 1951 Buick special, I learned to drive a lot on that machine. They were big beasts of the road. They rode like your ax’s was sitting in butter. Still got 18+ mpg on the highway. But, my dad had Ford blood, so I never got to chase a girl around those big seats, and the Buick was gone in short order. But, what a car, I’ll never forget that car! Great video, thanks for sharing!
As kids growing up my buddy's mom had a old Buick with a 455 big block. It said 425 rocket on the motor. We pegged it out at 136+ going to Santa Nella to get Taco's. Good times for hungry teenagers. For a bone stock mom car it was fast
I think speed records done with 50 or 60 years old cars pushed to their very limit are some of the most interesting. The fact they could do it is a true testament to the build quality of these old engines.
I have me one of them out back,a 49 super with the twin carb strait 8..first year of the dynaglide 2speed automatic..all original 95% survivor..just needs restoration..can't wait..
That thing is badass man! The face of the car looks like the iron giant or some locomotive it’s got a very steampunk meets mad max look. Although sadly you’ve sacrificed some of the styling by getting rid of the dash and it’s obviously no longer street legal either but I would say it’s well worth it. After all who would have guessed that an old straight eight was capable of doing that?
That is an awesome looking machine, I love me some Buicks. My first car 1967 Buick Riviera 430 cid ,super turbo 400 trans ,342 r and p. First race smoked a Olds cutless 442 1969.
Very interesting; its automotive sculpture that captures an earlier streamliner aesthetic. I like the hand hammered and finished raw steel. It is surreal looking, I thought it was a model car at first. "Who would build that?" I thought, but learning about its developers artistry I am pleasantly surprised. I am the designer of the Tuskegee Airmen's "Faithful Pursuit" '69 Buick Electra. That is also anything but subtle. Well done!
I'd say getting an old straight 8 to do 165 is pretty good. Those are the kind of speeds Bonneville guys would do back in the fifties, so it's true to the spirit. Pretty radical looking car. I like the "stainless" look.
One sweet sounding straight 8 an love the out the bonnet twin carb set up for cold air always wanted an old rod like this except in Australia there rich ppl cars now so it's just a dream till I win the lotto lol
**Reminds me of the day I brought my brand new 52 Buick Roadmaster Estate wagon to set records at Bonneville.** I drove it right off the showroom floor, directly to Bonneville, and ran 2 back to back passes of 172mph & 177mph! I'll admit to some modifications made just before the 2 runs. 1. Removed the spare tire and the bumpers to save weight. 2. Installed four high speed tires, and 3. Sprayed on some Pam cooking spray to make the car "slicker". Unfortunately, the car had the 263cu/in Fireball straight 8, instead of the more powerful 320cu/in engine, which would've guaranteed a 205mph average top speed.
Honest Charlie use to have the straight eight record 118MPH in 1950 until Terry Roche went 138MPH in 52, 4 2b's, 64 feet of exhaust system in a 50Buick.
I like this. I was wondering if this had a straight eight in it and the comments confirmed it. I saw the pair of two barrells sticking out of the hood a little off to the side which gave me a clue. This probably would have gone faster with a Buick 455 under the hood and be "all Buick" but "going fast" is not the complete point of Bonneville. "Going fast with this particular combination" is more the point. You could point a finger and dozens of other combinations that would seem a little weird but would have been easier done another way. I've seen a UA-cam of a guy with a '35 Chrysler with a flathead six sporting an "F-Head" conversion made by the owner in his own garage. This is a head which has an overhead valve for the intake and uses the stock exhaust valve. I can't remember the top speed but it most likely would have gone faster with a stepped on slant six but so what? These guys had a vision of a '52 Buick with a straight 8 going as fast as possible and did it. I think this is great and wish all parts of motorsport were a little bit more creative. Small block Chevys are great but seeing a mouse motor under the hood of 90% of the cars at a show or at the drags is a little boring.
The car would not have fit in the XO class if it had a Buick 455 in it. SCTA class structure designates XO as the class for vintage overhead valve engines.
One of the big challenges at the salt flats is high top speed with small displacement. I'm pretty sure there may be a vintage inline class but a lot of people shoot for the highest top speed possible with a destroked engine.
What an amazing piece of machinery that was never designed to go that fast. Pure sound and just freaking amazing. I know I'm years behind here but I can't get enough of this.
Not really. This are a dime a dozen among the hillbilly's.
You could see him smiling in that helmet lol!!! Yessssss!!!
Now that's living! Welllll done sir 🙏 Such a beautiful machine.
This is riveting, even for those of us who know so little about Bonneville world-records...perhaps even more riveting for those of us who know so little! Exceptional.
,The last truly amateur racing. Done as our forefathers did it. Emphasis on home built cars from non exotic alloy material.
World record for the fastest self propelled, steam-punk sculpture art !!!
That’s Diesel punk, dude
I was there,to me this was one outstanding package! I could not keep myself from going back for another look. This is a awesome machine that is a REAL example of what salt racing is all about. THEY NAILED IT!!!!!
Thomas Rhem That was the coolest salt flat car I have ever seen.
One of the most rock & roll videos ever. Love that sound & I love seeing old iron surviving its limits & emerging on the other side a record holder. That’s one pissed off straight 8
I have seen this car on the HAMB and now I'm even more impressed. That engine sound is awesome !!
Too much!!! Just hearing the roar of that old engine and watching the track out ahead from an inside view gave me severe goosebumps!
Brings back memories of a road trip in a '52 Buick 2dr hardtop from Texas to California back in 1954. We were not going quite that fast, though.
Ur old as fuck
We did that in 52 in a 50 fastback, from Indiana to California and back, I was 7!
@@brucekirk5386 .. Now, now be nice .. .
That car looks like it's straight from Flash Gordon. Crazy man. Great run with a great car.
jagger -- get over yourself mate. if they wanted to break the sound barrier, or go ludicrous speed, they not only would've chosen a different powerplant, but a different chassis as well. it was never their intent to be the fastest on the planet. the point was to take an unlikely 50+ year old engine and push its limits to see what they could accomplish. fastest is not always the best. the ability to engineer something for a purpose other than what it was intended for is what makes the world go round. i applaud these innovators, and the gear heads from generations past setting speed records with what other people called "junk." the world needs more folks like this in it.
jagger cant help it he is a DICK
That the point...run something different built for a specific class. They succeeded big time.
The 1950s American cars are recognized as the most aerodynamic and wind resistant cars of all time! Their compact size helps a lot too.....
Exactly !
@O.P. Yates Yeah, I was being sarcastic about the general lack of aerodynamics among mid century American cars. Lovely looking vehicle. Radical and purposeful. Well done!

just impressive
this engine never dreamed of this kind of power
Call the Highway Patrol.
Love to see this work of art on the street!
Jeff is nice guy, a incredible artist, and craftsman.
Yeah I know him too. He is a Good guy.
You know it's well built when it ain't all vibrating and shaking
I think speed records done with 50 or 60 years old cars pushed to their very limit are some of the most interesting. The fact they could do it is a true testament to the build quality of these old engines.
Straight eight? I'm impressed. (Love that sound!)
Beautiful... but I was expecting a Dynaflow tranny.
not really, not at all, they keep changing the rules
I love the vintage looks of this masterpiece!
That car is a work of art. Beautiful.
Buicks have always been bad ass cars.
A Buick at Bonniville is one thing, but to set a class record, in a Buick ,with a Buick straight 8 is insane.
Love it. Reminds me of my '53 Super
Looks awesome! Straight Eight! Such a different sound! Awesome job guys!
I have me one of them out back,a 49 super with the twin carb strait 8..first year of the dynaglide 2speed automatic..all original 95% survivor..just needs restoration..can't wait..
The SOUND! IM FLOORED from 5 years ago ....what!
Nice job Mr. Brock and crew, well done maestro's!!!
Fantastic! I had seen beautiful photos of this car, but to hear the monster roar is just another level of amazing!
As the old adage goes, 'When better Buicks are built, Buick will build them'.
Absolutely the best customized bus love it cheers KC Tasmania Australia
What a super cool looking beast!
I like the look and front end with the bullet headlights. real cool.
One of my all time favourite UA-cam videos.
Love the that Fireball sound. My brother's name is also Jeff Brock. Wish he was half this entertaining.
Awsome ride sounds like getting on southfield freeway in the 80's & 90's
This is awesome what a build ..

I love the sound of a Buick straight 8. So cool.
This 52 Buick looks and sounds like Pure Evil... I love this Straight Eight engine too... Kudos !!!
Amazing!
That is an awesome looking machine, I love me some Buicks. My first car 1967 Buick Riviera 430 cid ,super turbo 400 trans ,342 r and p.
First race smoked a Olds cutless 442 1969.
Remember the Buick "Wildcat"?
The one from new York I believe, that was awesome too!
Impressed by this car, the very first time I saw it! Awesome video!

"Tuff" - perfect 50s - 60s description
Michael, Youve Done Some Beautiful Work !.....
Those straight 8 Buicks were way ahead of their time. Check out what appears to be an adaptation of the factory dual carb setup from 40 and 41.
For me, this is THE best looking car I’ve ever seen......easily.

Awesome looking car n even better sounding. ..
Amazing car and driver/crew! Amazing sound and video. Wowwwwww.
some times you just do it because you want to...and be different cause it makes no sense...Perfect! I LOVE it! Plus car looks so badass!
Very impressive for a straight 8 with two two barrels.
crazycool!...love the raw steel!
Don Garlits seal of approval!
Badass ride great job
Such a beautiful machine.
Gorgeous
Love that Buick Straight Eight Engine.....The Buick Century would do 100mph right out of the Box and that was in 1938.......
The Buick straight 8 in 1947 was the most powerful engine you could buy that year. It had more horsepower than the Cadillac.
Actually 1936 was the first year for Century, and they would do an honest 100 mph which was really something then.
Frickin' cool! And it's a banger!
Sounds great! Good job!
Built for comfort, capable of speed. Built right :)
Oh, ho, ho, ho. Isn't this something special. So cool.
Happy Friday to everybody God bless America stay safe Stay Focus happy Easter to everyone in America God bless
Fucking hell what a beauty
Jesus Christ. You blaspemer! You are waiting for hell!

320Ci, 165 mph, Great job!
LOVE THIS CAR!
Valentines day heart 02/22 again until end of time
This had so much throat lump.... can we not officially crown this.... the world's fastest Buick?

My 47 Buick was a babbit pounding 258 odd cubes.Looked like a Chevy 6 with 2 more cylinders.
nice car
Big INTENSE Buick ride!
Awesome job guys the coolest salt flat car on Earth.
That is one sweet piece of work! Love it man!
Spine-tingling stuff!
Que Maravilla he disfrutado esta historia !!
Steampunck at his best... what a beautiful car.
You know the car means business when it doesn't need a spoiler to keep in on the ground. MAN!!!!
This is powerfull beast!!!!
Iron American Dream on UA-cam.
It's real and it's made out of steel.
You got to love the guys sled man.
Heavy metal, Rolling Thunder.
Bad to the Bone Buick Mr. Brock!!!
the whole car is awesome. but that air scoop could not be more wrong. you could get more ram air effect at speed with a trumpet horn shape.
Gotta love a straight 8 !

Made when car styling was a work of art ...
Congrats Jeff! Good job and great video! Love the editing.
