I love this. The voicing is very nice and you're a great player and teacher...why does the D chord always sound like the 1 chord? When I hear that Em chord (beautiful voicing!) it seems to pull me to the D chord just like a 2 chord resolves to a 1 chord...

I’ve been a H&P member since 2008. I appreciate all you do. I used to be afraid of listening to Jonathan’s videos because they were so advanced and I felt like they were waaay over my head. Now whenever I go on, I look forward to your vids. I love the way you guys teach. Thanks for helping me grow

how can i implement this as a bass player?

    • @racheljones5614

First, you can use the number system to play this all day. 3 to 6 is C# to F# which is normally a minor chord for the 3 and for the 6. So you can just play the C# on the 3 or play short bass runs like C#, D#, E, D#, C# over the chord for the 3. You can do that same pattern for the 6 like F#, G#, A, G#, F#. That's just playing the first 3 notes of the minor scale over minor chords. You can expand all this by playing modes or by playing the notes of the chords on your high strings. On the 4 you can play something like A,B, D, E, F# which just emphasizing the major chord or an upper structure chord played on the 4. So the numbers give you options. You can just play the main notes that go with the chords, you can play the first 3 notes of scale based on scale degree you are on: for 1-4-5 major scale and 2-3-6 minor scale minor for 7 you can substitute the 5 major scale for harmony or do the diminish scale for the 7. This is the surface. When you play highs, you can put the whole melody in your bass run then walk you scale back to the main note, you can do chords on the bass over the the main notes, you can play a 1,5,1,3,4 to go to the 4 which is D, you do slide to the C#, then play B,C#,E,F,F# to go to the 6. There is so much to do on bass once you connect the number system to scales, modes, and chords. Sorry for the long post.
