In this advanced gospel piano tutorial episode 18, of Chord Crush Thursdays, we're going to explore passing chords using altered dominant voicings. We'll explore the dominant 7, dominant 7 #9#5, dominant 7 b9b5, dominant 7 #9b5, and a whole host of other versions of it.
We'll be in the key of Eb major and use the dominant altered chords on the 3rd tone of the scale (G) to take us to the 6th tone of the scale, which is C minor. You'll learn several chords that can take you to the 6th minor chord of the key; in our case, a phat C minor 11 voicing.
Altered chords make great passing chords on the 2, 3, 6, and 7th tones of the scale and you'll learn the most popular one of them all... using sharp and flatted 9th and 5th intervals. This is the secret to flowing like a pro!
Jonathan Powell piano instructor is going to use the Altered scale (which is linked to the melodic minor scale a half step up) to improvise, solo, and find other tones we can add to our passing chords.
Combined with previous episodes where you learned tons of movements, this will add even more to your collection.
