I also quit my job as a developer. Sure the pay was good but it's not worth the stress and being stuck inside all day. I'm now working as a photographer and enjoy it far more. I don't get paid as much but I don't even care.
mhm at least u are now living insted of chasing something u don't like ..for me i love games and i love making concepts and looking for ways to make games eficent and all game related topics like drawing sprites and music and concepts on how to make the game i felt bad cuz i couldn't program those parts even tho i can do stuff like drawing which ppl feel like its extremly hard for them to do but ig not everyone should be a programmer to be usefull in the game industry there is stuff like manegment
@@kyonas6047 Yeah it's not for everyone, I was doing web development and it's just become ridiculously over-engineered and not fun at all to work with. I don't think it's a long term job for many people, within 5 or 10 years most people will burn out and quit. I'm so glad I quit, best decision I've ever made!

I'm a developer for... let's say 7 or 8 years... I used to enjoy it very much in the beginning...
in the beginning, I even used to design and invent software in my head and then do all the architecture using diagrams, but today being a developer is a burden for me, I can't take it anymore and I'm trying to migrate to other areas of IT.

Same for me, 16 years y I have a burn out that almost let me in the street, I lose most of my "programmer abilities" I'm returning little by little but it is not the same and will never be the same, I just want to resiste enough to have mone so I can change to other field. I want to walk, see nature, make some fiscal work, not be behind a monitor the rest of my life.
I'd rather be a software developer for life than move into PROJECT MANAGEMENT HELL!!! Hard pass. That job is a daily nightmare. And boring to boot.
Being around for 22 years and went through almost all programming related areas and even switched languages many times , to cope. You’ll start fresh but eventually end up the same way as before(burnout)
Thanks for sharing. I Am 24 and a C# software engineer but I already feel exhausted. I feel I have just entered into the rat's race. The routine and always working under orders and instructions is something I can't bear for many years. There are many things I want to do with my life and time but cannot do them. I am working on my 'prison break' in the next 6 months. I think you made the best decision. Thanks for sharing.
We all have things that work and motivate us and a lot of times we take the easy route because it the known or the safe route. Me leaving my job is not something that was easy to do, but looking back to 7 month ago, I grew up so much and I learned so much that I was not longer able to do at work. Hopefully you find what you like and get to do that. Best regards!
Same, sitting in front of a screen for 30 years auto pilot your life away, but I still gotta pay bill. Until I have an alternative income then I can't quit. I know I'm not the only one feeling this.

Is it a development role or maintenance?
After 20 years of experience in IT field I learned one thing. You don't have to be the hero of the day, week or month. It's about the money. It's the companies right to make as much as they can and so should you.
You are so humble. I can imagine that environment where you have to handle a lot of things and also be responsible for your children, its no easy indeed. It was a wisely decision. Hopefully everything is alright :)

After 15 years with many ups and downs, Software Engineering has absolutely sucked my soul dry. I'm so tired and lost, not to mention addicted to unhealthy coping mechanisms.
These kind of realistic sincere "testimonies" are needed in this world. I feel like IT is too much for me at middle age. Always learning, doing so much meetings and so many administrative stuff to take care of that your mind is just spinning as crazy. After a while it's too much.
Thank you a lot. You just speak my heart thinking. After learning something as a web developer and applying it I just move forward without taking a deep breath and asking my self why I have learned it and what benefit does it provide to me. You know, I just keep forgetting those things. From know on I will look forward to the concept not the rules. Your talking just give me an aim. I want to be a reason follower.

I feel that I got your point. I perceive that the issue lies in unrealistic timelines to achieve higher progress. This is one thing that makes me upset all the time. When I was a beginner, I was only given 3-4 weeks to learn a new technology from end-end.

I always love the days when I am on bench or when I don't have to work even when in a project. -_-
I gave my best in the first 2-3 years and then I experienced a burnout at one point. It's almost been 4.8 years now since I started and I still try to do my best but I've stopped trying to overexert myself now.

Job is like a relationship and modern companies are like modern dating, netflix and chill instead of life long partners. I approached several jobs thinking "ill work here till I retire" eventually the managers/company/owners treating you like trash pushes you out. You can bring your absolute best, and theyll shit on you. Now i approach jobs like they have a definitive end. Sad :(
The relationship analogy is a good one. to continue the relationship analogy, you need to look inside yourself, because you will find the problem and the solution :)
trust me, my life changed when I changed on the inside. it hasn't been easy but after 3 years I have more money and more confidence and satisfaction. I lifted my brother out of depression and took financial pressure off my mom, my life is of a different quality now. maybe you couldn't tell from looking at me but it feels different. look up David Hawkins letting go, good luck!

It is important to take care of yourself, if you are feeling burnt out, do something to solve the situation, maybe a vacation, change of course, project... anything that you think might help. You are brave and you can do anything you put your mind to. Best of luck.

I made lots of money ...and WISHED I kept my amazon stock at 20 dollars a hour, I would be a millionaire and retired but nope, sold after I was let go from the group and had no work for a year, and my car broke down.
@@LK-pc4sq its okay brother, sometimes the things you like is not good for you... I heard many rich people are not happy, after all who will take drugs and alcohol if they are happy? If money will snatch your good days and happiness, and lead you to stress and ungodly things then seek refuge in God from that, but yes, we have to do that much thing where we have to live happily with whatever we got... Too much money ain't bad thing unless it won't drive you crazy but with some money where you are living a stress-less life is a good thing
I am in first year of Computer Science. I thought I would like programming , but I don t like. I feel so stressed coding and I thought mental heath is more important than a job that pay you lots of money.
I didn't work in software development, but I worked 10 years on the IT side of things as a systems engineer. It's even worse. I just don't enjoy technology like I used to. It started as a hobby, and then working in the industry made me hate working on it, even as a hobby. I left my job without notice and now I'm partnering with a friend doing remodeling (demolition is pretty fun), garage doors, framing, and making almost as much as I did at my last job since there's very little overhead. We're only 7-8 months into this company, so hoping it just gets better.

@@Ryan-mx4ll good for you! Yours is sadly a familiar tale in tech: kid who likes tech as a hobby, gets skills/education, turns their passion into a job, then slowly gets the passion squeezed out of them.
In the UK the BCS did research and found that 25% of men leave the tech sector totally after 10 years, and 40% of women leave after 20 years.
Tech drains people until you are a husk. Long hours, on call, heavy work loads, and in top of that staring at screens hours in end in work rots your eyesight.
If I could do it again, I'd be a gardener.

Employers are always there to abuse & rip off the employees one way or the other. Ever thought is the company respecting your loyalty? Dont be so emotional in life. You will do everything & the company wont even think to pull the trigger on you. If you are in a job you are selling your skills. Take it that way. And yes no job is to be taken for granted. Its there today might disappear the next day.

The point about having to meet higher expectations is interesting. I can totally relate to this. I also hear lot of female engineers speak about the opposite, that they're not expected to be as smart as their male co workers. I don't know which one is a better situation, they both sound like less than ideal.
in my experience on average (as there are exceptions) the women on the team are given a fairly easy time by the team leads (given the more enjoyable less pressure work) in part cuz of that perception but also cuz of the strong push for more women in tech and the belief that they need to be cushioned all the way. it's kinda depressing when you see them get a pass while you're being expected to do the heavy lifting and stay late fix technical issues etc. it makes me want to leave the profession and say "ladies, if you want it you can have it but you have to have all the job, not just the nice parts"

I studied computer science but I could not keep my interest in becoming a programmer, so after I graduated I just worked as a technical support advisor, it's not that bad in the beginning, because it helps me improve my communication and English skills. But in the long run, I need to get into a real career and I feel bad that I can't get into something related to what I studied. Also I'm interested in moving to another country as you did (Canada). Need an advise from you

I left software as well. After having worked for a variety of MNCs as a cloud engineer such as IBM, amazon etc im exhausted and perpelxed by how annoyed i am at fhe system ! Its really draining dull and too grey for me. Im 27 years old and have decided to quit IT to become a pilot. Lifes too short

I m so Stuck in work & yes not getting time to breathe & I have a 3year kid .I was so happy before but after coming to this new project to get visa,I feel I made a mistake. Because there's no one happy in this project.... everyone works more than 9hours & getting more works without knowing how to get it done & in a very short deadline. Before watching this video I was blaming my self that I m not able to manage things but now I understood that the issue is in the project selection.Not sure what to do because I want to earn & keep learning.
I suspect that you did not have a good manager to provide you a safe and comfortable environment as you grew and progressed in your career at your past company. Picking a good manager/mentor is very important when considering switching jobs.
You’re a skilled person. You can use those skills to freelance , working under your own terms. Maybe worth a consideration .

Yes it is
The first time you complete a task in 2 weeks, they say "Oh Yalcin, that is great. This task generally takes 3 weeks." After some time you are given a similar task but this time you may not deliver it in 2 weeks. They will question "Hey dude, you still didn't deliver it. Be quicker please". So, even if you have close relationships with your employer, you are still a tool to them to make money. They will try to utilize you as much as possible. They don't care about your personal development, mental situation etc. most of the times. The only criteria to stay some where: Are you happy or not? If you are not happy, will you be able to support yourself financially for some time if you quit? Every developer should analyze their own situation and make a decision. Don't make it complex.
in general corporations do not reciprocate loyalty these days. there's just too many layers between stakeholders and employees for anyone to care or incentivize loyalty if they do. don't sell yourself short for legal entities setup purely for financial profit.

What is the difference between a software developer and a software engineer? I’m going to the University of Mobile in Mobile, Alabama in the Fall. They have a software developer major. Will that be a good choice for me?
It depends on who you will ask, but in my opinion, they do similar things. It might be that you start as a software developer and as you get more experience you become a software engineer, however, at the core they are the same things. Best of luck with your studies, a career in tech can be challenging at times and really rewarding.

Im just about to join a bootcamp and so I've searching about people's experiences on it.. from what I understood from your other video you probably recommend avoiding them altogether and going the self-taught route instead?

@Leonardo Ragazini what I am trying to say is that you need to research your bootcamp very well and know what you are paying for exactly. If you know that you can succeed with a self-taught rought then do it, bootcamp is a bit more organized and keeps you accountable. Ask yourself is that worth the high cost?
I think I'm near burnout, because I'm completely dread to "go" to work everyday even WFH.
I'm in an interview process and I hope I pass, if this happens I'll feel like a giant burden will be removed from me, especially in my mind.
Otherwise, if this doesn't happen I'm thinking about quit, I think it is much more ethical than the way I'm behaving now and I believe I can find a new job in some months, even if it doesn't pay the same amount.

I think secretly this is a near universal experience for software devs. But if you speak up about burnout managers who aren't in the position of having to do the work themselves will just insist "just give it another week we're nearly there" and on it goes forever.
In the end I didn't quit at that time, but this month I left the company and I'll start tomorrow in a new one.
Unfortunately I couldn't rest a full month before I start, but I had to leave, also for this new job I had to set up my own company, now it is funny because I want to grow my company but I still worry a lot about not having enough free time, anyway time will tell the path I'll choose.
Good luck if you are feeling the same I was about my job, I hope you find your ideal place in the industry.

Takes a long time to get to the point, but it's this, yes, you have to keep learning. I think the problem with most programmers is the thought that you have to be incredibly myopic and you want to accomplish everything over night. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

I would rather be a programmer than a teacher in a public school, which I did for 2 yrs.

what bothers me in my current job (8 hours a day) : it degrades my vision (and maybe my health too), no ambiance (and no future because the mediocre/traitors political leaders of France/EU will destroy many businesses because of their global death agenda, aka the great reset), coworkers always staring at their screens. in general what bothers me in coding is the bad quality code/complexity of the projects I have to maintain. Personally, I think that we should use patterns that make programs predictable and deterministic, for example, prefer message passing to communicate between threads, in other words don't let a method/object to be used by different threads (even if you use locks). I don't like languages that use garbage collection, I prefer using smart pointers like the ones the Qt C++ framework offer. GUIs should be simple, at this time, I'm using WPF and I don't like it.
I love math, I love doing math, math is my passion and my life and my love.
But, just as much as I love math, I hate coding/programming. Computer programming is my antichrist.

Software development is always about pushing your limit forward, you are never good enough. Everyday appears some new technology you have to learn or you will be a fossil. I hate that too. It exhausts a lot. If you are a company founder only then you can rest and not work
The job is very complex very hard and you need to do and know a million thing.. Some people answer phone calls and do some paper work and get paid almost the same salary..
I heard something that I liked today from one of the @ThePrimeagen shorts, and it goes something like: There are people who say programming is easy, and not true programming is simple but not easy. Simple and easy are completely different things

Doing the same thing over over can lead to undesirable consequences. Is there any chance you can try a different method for a bit and see how it goes?

You should have fun and feel like being in a flow when you are programming. Not thinking about goal and higher goals or pressure. Perhaps think a bit parallel on the way where you are heading, but it is about enjoying the ride. If you are not enjoying it after a while it is not for you.
You have mix it up lash out get wreckless with the shit. Keep people guessing be unpredictable. Helps to lie all time about any little thing. Don't ever be scared walk out or leave company hanging. I've had many dead end jobs. Out of blue be helpful caring they won't know what hit them. All company wants for you make them 3 times as much as they pay you. make demands come up missing for weeks on end. Loyalty cool but not if it's one-sided.

As far as I understood you want to learn some promising areas and your company didn't allow you do that. Because when I see that title I think people want to change position, like became team lead, manager or something, didn't you think or try that?

Я дошла до уровня где я не учила практически нечего нового, не делала ничего нового и хотела выучить что-то новое и интересное за своё время но мне не разрешили на работе и через несколько месяцев решила уйти когда на работе перестали прибывать проекты.

the endless chase for the carrot is exactly the rat race of corporate salaried work. unfortunately software dev is on the receiving end of decisions made by others in the company. you're at the mercy of their whims and beliefs. it's why managers enjoy the process while software devs burnout time and time again. cuz you're the rat on the wheel and they're there to maximize the speed you run on that wheel, endlessly.

neither is not having a house, future or legacy. this job could be so much better if companies didnt suck ass, werent stingy and treated people fairly. no one accomodates for juniors. so the industry is a mess. 7 years ive been trying to get my foot in the door and that is After university.
so why did she quit? why cant she just give some simple and concise answers rather than annoucing it for several videos and not providing a clear and simple answer. After hearing all this, the only clue i got was that she wanted to do something different, and then she goes on and say there wasnt any work, and then she says she worked too much and not had pause, so which one is it??? why on earth is it so difficult to pin point something easy and simple, but she's not providing anything concret. some poeple are just complicated...
English is not her first language. It seemed like she was trying her best to explain her situation in another language. So basically from what I got, the company was not doing well anyways so it gave her a reason to leave. She probably was stressed sometimes and had moments where she thought that something else would be better for her since coding is always overworking you.

20+ years coding, it sucks royal donkee. Arrogance, lack of support, horribly written systems, increasing complexity, throwing out technologies and adopting new ones just cause... (see Angular), forcing you to work on technologies you don't care about or want to do.. Companies will not allow time off/sabbatical etc. You are a cog in the wheel. No matter how good a job you do, no one cares...here's your next project. No thanks, no bonus, just here's the next thing. Imagine that forever, now, do you care anymore about doing a great job?

In the sence.. cost of living ../ here in India for family of 3 it's less than 150 doller per month / with good housing / and in USA / EUROPE u know it better. So if u have big business dreams it's easy in India compare to west and u can scale up internationally..!!!

That is the case where I am coming from too, and many more places. I was working tones of hours per month and getting a salary of $30 a month on good months, as per cost of living the salary did not cover even the bills for electricity, gas and water... so I know about this, I grew up there, and it is the really for many counties in the worlds and it has nothing to do with the color, race or religion.
