Tom Bukovac aka "Uncle Larry" (@501chorusecho) has recorded over 600 albums with artist as diverse as Steven Tyler, Carrie Underwood, Don Henley, Willie Nelson, Blake Shelton, Stevie Nicks, and Sheryl Crow. Tom is absolutely fabulous and such a sweet gentleman
I can't be the only one that comes back frequently to listen to this intro. Just incredible playing.
No, you're not. It was the first thing I heard from Uncle Larry, and felt like he showed me a place somewhere in me that I knew was there but never surfaced. Jimi does the same with me. Being watching the Corona lessons and Homeskoolin' show religiously since day one. He's a special kind of person and human being.
You’re not
You aren’t, I’m here once every couple of weeks, just for the intro.
Guilty
This is where I discovered uncle Larry when this rr first aired.. I fell in love with that intro and have watched it over and over since. It’s so awesome I wish he’d do abit of it on homeskoolin
Tom is an absolute one-of-a-kind. He loaned me some gear for one of my first "big" sessions years ago (it wasn't that big, really😄) and I muddled through it as best I could. When I brought it all back I had a zillion questions and he very patiently went through a kind of "Nashville Session 101" with me. Here's the tuner to get. Here's how you dial in an amp to get a tone that's full, but cuts through. Here are the main guitars you really need for almost any session. Here's how you TUNE the guitar when the intonation is off (as it was for most of my guitars) but you need to use it- basically he said you find the chord or the area of the fretboard you're going to be using the most for that song or that track/part and tune the guitar to that. He was so excited to talk gear and walk me through it all!
But most of what I've learned from Tom has been from just watching him play up close. Everything he plays is a lesson in phrasing, note selection, and taste. His touch and dynamics are otherworldly.
You know by any chance why gauge strings he likes and if he uses a wound 3rd?
@@johnday8092 he uses 10s. he said it in this video
Speak of these.spexial "ser-ups".and what to look for in an amplifier... Please 🙏🏼
You have my attention and others!
@@NightpantsAt 11:50 he talks strings. So Yes, but... He also said he could probably play 9's and he didn't think strings made that much of a difference. He told the Billy Gibbons story who started playing 8's in 1971 because BB King looked at his guitar and asked him why he was working so hard.
Based on his explanation of not being able to easily bend the high E string, it's possible age had something to do with it. I've heard SRV moved to thinner springs as he got older.
This isn’t just a rig rundown. This is life-affirming rock and roll wisdom.
I play licks from this Rig Rundown sometimes and people are like, that is so beautiful, what song is that? Just this guy Tom Bukovac casually noodling better music than most people will ever play their whole lives.
Chiming in with the chorus of people saying this is one of the best Rig Rundowns ever. Bukovac is a true MASTER.
I love how real this guy. He has a 61 SG and is like"you wanna know what sucks about this guitar?" love that, man.
The studio players make the best Rig Rundowns. Kenny Gallagher, Brent Mason, and, now, Tom Bukovac have blown my mind. Thanks, Premier Guitar and John for guiding Tom to play his stuff. Just great!
Now they need to do rob mcnelley
Its cos they are actual sound artists not just trust fund non-binaries.
Some licks to be learned from this one.
Don't forget Kenny Greenberg too. John didn't let him play to show the various guitars, amps and pedals but it was still a treasure of info.
Tom has become a must watch , i'm almost 57 and have learned more in the last year by just watching and listening to Tom. . AMAZING
This isn’t a rundown, this is an education. Thank you Tom - you didn’t have to share your gift with PG and us, you coulda just pointed at amps and smiled. You’re a good, good dude, man. Thank you!
best playing, best tone, best personality. this rundown wins.
Beginning to end, just stellar. Tom doesn't play guitar, he communes with guitar. Amazing gear, great info.
Well said.
I know what you mean, but using the word "commune" implies a guitar to be something to bow down to. It's only an object albeit a special one. IMHO
@@roymontero4066 It means no such thing.
@@billtilghman2232 yes word means nothing.
I was thinking a similar thing - he's not just playing, there's so much more there. You can just FEEL it.
Who in their right mind gives this a "thumbs down"? Everything this guy plays is soulful and tasteful. Monster player.
Djent heads
Bass players and drummers
Brian Holland no doubt!!

2 years later and I still watch this video almost monthly. Two of the coolest guitar dudes just having a chat about gear. Can’t get enough of it.
My favorite moment in this interview:
Tom: (hands John the SG) Feel it. Kinda heavy?
John: Eh, I don't know. I mean.....I don't know.
Tom: Alright
This interview was chill AF
My favorite moment:
"Who's gonna argue with BB King?"
Mine was, "Is there any other Eddie?"
@@stevecrisp2008 eddie hazel
Mine was when John handed him a guitar, then Tom handed it back and told him to feel how heavy it was. He literally just picked it up. Still though, great interview.
This guy slays me every time he touches a guitar. Everything he plays is beautiful. Best voice leading and chord voicings in the game. Time feel is flawless. I love watching his right hand.
every touch...it's crazy
Everything Tom plays sounds like the most important bit of music you’ve ever heard
And to think 95% of it is stream of consciousness. Unbelievable.
There was a comment on one of Larry's first videos that I loved. "Every time Tom picks up a guitar a song comes out. It's never noodling". And it's so true.
Your comment describes Tom PERFECTLY.
Hello from Sweden I hope both of you guys some times think about how far and in this case how deep those videos reach. I am born in far North of Sweden now living in lovely Stockholm finding my self getting so moved and inspirered by this that I am at 51 years of age wanting to go back to my previous line of work as session musician, singer, guitarist and bandleader. I know this sounds like your average mid life crisis but damn this is so inspiring and sometimes life changing so just a big thank you to Tom and John for sharing this unstopable love of life, gear and music.🙂❤🙏
Man... hanging with Tom and John talking about guitars. Does not get better than this.
I LOVE how Tom always keeps it real and sugar coats nothing.
Absolutely perfect!!!! This wasn’t a just rig rundown, it’s a master class!!
That Martin sounded phenomenal. The guy knows his stuff and has great taste.
Was that not the best acoustic guitar sound you ever heard? Man that was something else... 1938 Martin....it’s incredible just how great a guitar that’s over 80 years old could sound when kept in optimal shape and playing condition.
I don't know one thing about older Martins, but the sound of that one is incredible.
Whos the leon he talks about when hes playing the martin?
greek, I believe he is referencing Leon Rhodes
Totally agree , never thought much of them until I heard that .
New favourite guitarist of all time.
I've watched this probably a dozen times in a yr. Tom is one of the greats for sure. I don't live by it, but would suggest anyone wanting to get better on guitar to study this man hard. One of my favorite things about him is, he never gets lazy in his playing. Doesn't matter if he's just teaching a lick, or clowning around, he always put 100% into one note, much less a phrase or song. Probably in my top 5 people in the world I would like to share a beer with and talk for a night. The people he knows and has played with is incredible. Reminds me of Steve Luckather. Just a humble studio cat living the dream!
As a guitar player, watching Bukovac compose on the spot is really one of the most special things you can ever witness.
One of the best Rig Rundowns of all time. This guy is my spirit animal. LOL
JJ Boogie
Tom is phenomenal, my bearded brother.
You have to check out his channel if you haven’t already.
501chorusecho
Totally agree. I never heard of Tom, now I can't stop thinking about him.
I'd buy an album of Tom noodling
Somehow he makes it sound like a song
Me too. His noodling sounds like well thought out, harmonically sophisticated compositions.
Definitely!
I'd love to see a indepth lesson on the theory behind it, kinda Little Wingish but not.
100% 👌🏼
Agreed this is the best rundown I’ve ever seen 😎😎
This plus Kenny Greenberg are my Top 2
I second that for sure.
@@randerson2842 YES! Kenny's was great! I liked Larry Carlton too.
steve wariner by far
@@sugarlife485 That was good too.
Tom dialing in a variety of sounds in seconds, knowledge of his gear and gear in general is truly inspiring.
I've never heard of this guy but what a killer guitar player! Tone for days. Would love to hear that rack of amps too. I'll be checking out some more of this guy.
Tom is amazing. Everything he plays here is so musical.
Ive got to come back to watch this every once a while just to get inspired again and again.By far the best rig rundown. Never wears out. Never get tired of this.
Such an inspirational player. His playing is already in every household but nobody realizes it.
Robbie Bolog
FACTS!
BRAVO! Absolutely the best "rig rundown" of all time! Tom B. has got to be one of the most down-to-earth cats I have ever seen. His attitude, his talent, his sincerity, all speak volumes about his love of guitars and music. He is a credit to the music industry. We need more guys like Tom. Thanks! Tom R.
Uncle Larry is one of the most natural guitarists I've ever heard. The man is gifted. And I love that '61 SG Les Paul Custom. Beautiful!
his hands are so full of emotion. i believe that's where the bulk of his tone lies. amazing opening tune.
Today marks the 20th time I have watched this rig rundown. Seriously one of if not the best one yet. Great work guys!
First Thought: WOW! 2nd Thought OMG! What an interview that was!! What a dude and what a player, Loved how tom really gets into the groove in whatever style hes playing, could listen, watch n learn all day long.. FANTASTIC RIG RUNDOWN EPISODE
Wow. I have to admit I am not familiar with Mr. Bukovak, but his tonal sense is astounding!! His playing is crazy beautiful, and all of the different tones he pulled out of that board was inspiring to say the least. That is a man who has SO much experience chasing tones. Some of that playing almost brought me to tears it was so beautiful. I love stumbling on these videos that I learn so much from. Fantastic.
I assume that you have gone on to watch his Homeskoolin' channel on UA-cam? If not, check it out and enjoy.
@@AlexKeim8 Second that. His UA-cam channel is a gold mine.
One of the most important guitarists of our time. And that’s not hyperbole. (Like several have said: Tom “noodles” complete musical orchestrations. 😅)
@@AlexKeim8 Ohh Yes I have!!! Rarely miss an episode.
@@tomhurstdrums He truly is such a unique tasteful no BS guitarists guitarist. Some of his off the cuff improvisations have had me completely moved emotionally. Not many guitar players can do that. Just to come up with it like that. Amazing.
Hand's Down... One of the greatest guitarist's on the planet!
God DAMN that Martin kicks ass.
The forward shifted bracing in that old wood is divine! Best ever.
what Martin
Where did he say he bought it?
@@TheBoomtown4 Gruhn in Nashville
@@mattr2128 thanks!
I could just listen to Tom noodling like this all day! He can make ANY guitar sing!
That Martin is a living, breathing thing. I am in awe of the guitar, and more importantly, the player.
Without any exaggeration I smile every time I hear him play.
Tom is amazing! The man is like an encyclopedia of everything from guitars to amps to pedals. I learned so much from this video while also enjoying hearing his stylish playing!
That opening was one of the best pieces of playing I’ve ever seen. He’s hunched over like the guitar has taken control of him and put him in a trance. Jeez what a player.
Tom has the tastiest guitar licks I have ever heard. I had never heard of the guy and he is a favorite now. What a great rundown.
This rundown blows my mind every dozens of times i watch it.
His playing is full of emotion and wrings out emotion from the listener.
I have been checking in with Tom's "HomeSkoolin'" channel for a few months now, listened to some of the live show material out there and bought his "Plexi" CD, but I have sat and watched this entire video and I am mesmerized. I am coming to find Tom Bukovac as the greatest all-around guitarist alive today and possibly ever. Not only for his pure talent, tone, touch, phrasing and all of the professional guitar player stuff but watching his pure enthusiasm as he walks through everything from his guitars, amps and pedals. What an absolutely amazing player.
This is the most melodic playing I've heard on any video. Beautiful!
An incomparably talented guitarist who plays with such a great nerve and feeling that touches right into the soul. Have seen this intro a hundred times and love it. ❤️
This set the bar to a new high. Just awesome. Great explanations of how to use the tools, adjusting on the fly. Easy to see how he has been so successful as a studio guru.
One of thee best players I’ve come across. Tom has feel for years! What a gift.
@18:35 ''that Gretsch over there's pretty cool' ... wOw.
transformative tonal expression - excellent solo playin' & chordal textures.
I had not heard of Tom, but man, the dude is the real deal. He doesn't play flashy, he plays musically. I think that's about the best compliment a guitarist can get. And John does his stellar job as well - he's the best in the biz.
Of all the Rig Rundown's I've experienced, this one magically mixes information and entertainment. What a great guy - telling us all his secrets and demonstrating the results. Amazing! I have only one question, though - does Tom look blazed here? 😉
My favourite Rig Rundown ever. Very inspiring playing, also with the way he interacts with his sounds.
Man, this is the greatest channel in the history of the channels. God bless Premier Guitar.
Such a shame the interview was so short - Tom wasn't given the chance to show his Kemper settings and favourite profiles. Joking aside, that was amazing - this guy really cares about everything and you can hear it. Playing, context and tones. Thank you so much. Disclaimer - I am one who has gone over to the Dark (green) side.
Amazing. We need Tom to do an interview on Trutone lounge now
Anthony Patton Agreed. Zac is the best interviewer.(No disrespect to John).
Not Truetone Lounge but here's a good one as well...
www.thinkinanddrinkin.com/podcast/tombukovac
He should head to jolly ol england and blow the pedal show guys away!
ASAP!!
Makes you realize how much more their is to your gear than simply plugging in and twisting the knobs. A lifetime of experimentation and outstanding playing. Could watch this all day, great episode!
Wow, this is one of the best rig rundowns ever .Tom's playing and knowledge of the amps and pedals was just unreal this guy sound is so good I got chills I'am a FFL (fan for life )OMG!!!
I like to think of Buk as the Keanu Reeves of guitar - he's just so chill it's incredible. Best thing about him is that while he's full of defined opinions and strong beliefs honed over many years, he's not out to convert anyone to his way of thinking. He couldn't care less what you use - as long as it works and sounds great to him and what he's looking for. And he immediately credits others for their ideas and hard work. Zero sense of artifice from this guy. The noisiest, most troll people online are exactly like small barky dogs - at their cores, they're all ultimately deeply insecure. Buk and people like him are at the exact opposite of the spectrum - totally secure in who he is and what he does and what he believes, but not afraid to admit when he's wrong and to change his mind. We should all aspire to be as chill as Buk - we'd all be a lot happier. :) Awesome work PG, John!
He’s not afraid to make a bold statement either. He’s knows his stuff as one would expect. I could chat with him all day, notepad in hand lol
You absolutely nailed why he is so revered. Really a master, knowledgeable as hell, incredible player but like you said, would hear someone's rig with different, most likely cheaper pedals etc. and if it sounded good would tell them so. Down to earth and genuine--love hearing his playing and the insights. Pure gold!
@@BelowAverageGuitarist Yes, a notepad indeed!
man the moderating guy is so cool and such a supportive guy!
Guys why on earth would you give this a thumbs down? Is it because he’s not shredding, or is it just because you don’t like tasteful beautiful guitar playing.
Been waiting for some in-depth-Bukovac-footage for YEARSSS. Finally :-)
This is by far the best RR. Tom has played on thousands of records and you are getting the benefit of all those tones he achieved for the best producers in the world. Notice that his gear is almost exclusively 50yrs old or older.
He needs a UA-cam channel and more videos. He has some of the best tone.
ua-cam.com/users/501chorusechovideos
I decided to watch this rundown again and noticed my comment from 3 months ago. Things changed fast. I’m really digging his homeskoolin Chanel. Tom is badass.
He does...called "Homeskoolin'"....not sure about spelling
I think I've watched the intro of this video at least 25 times since it's been published!!! So musical!!! The gear is great, but this player is so much greater!!!
Who thumbs down on this? Tones, knowledge, playing. He is the real deal.
I've been waiting for some good Tom Bukovac interviews on UA-cam. This is awesome. Now for a TrueTone Lounge Episode. :)
I've been hoping they would do that for the last few years .. it's odd in a way that they haven't. Sometimes I think that Tom doesn't really like doing these interviews.
Desmond Smith Zac said he has been trying to get him but it hasn’t happened yet. Tom did one for Gruhn too so maybe there’s hope.
I got back to this video often, what a legend. I like to think of this rig rundown as the pilot for Homeskoolin
This guy had one of the best guitar shops here in Nashville, super nice dude.
I love this guy, man. 100% dedicated to the instrument and all it's lore and secrets. The search never ends and it's so fun and fulfilling. He's broken in the head like a lot of us. 😆
BEST rig rundown since Daniel Lanois! Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this!
Wow. Incredible dynamics and phrasing. All of Tom’s playing feels like a hit song from a soundtrack. And the insight into his tone is by far the best I’ve seen in any rig rundown. Using an expression pedal to control a boost pedal as a volume pedal?!? Awesome. Thanks.
Oh my freakin god, that ‘58 335 is something that I’ve dreamed about.
What a sound!!!!
Damn, everything this guy plays sounds amazing! The vibe is instant, even a simple chord sounds magical.
Dear god, what a beautiful player.
I'm from Eastlake Ohio and went to school with a Patricia Bukovac. Not sure what relation she would have been to Tom. I used to go to The Surfside Lounge quite a lot between 1973 when I got out of the Navy and 1978 when I left Ohio. It was a very local bar and I lived close to it. I remember Toms mom and she was always a really nice person. Tom would only have been 10 years old when I left Ohio so I doubt I heard him play at the bar and I do not remember him. Good to know a local boy made something of himself.
Man, this is sooo cool. I (sadly) just discovered Tom by way of a friend recommending his lockdown videos and he is a really interesting guy. Really happy to come across this, thanks guys! Amazing guitars, amazing playing, what's not to love?
I never really took the time to check Tom out but WOW what a cool guy and what a guitarist I’ll be checking out his body of work as soon as this interview ends.
Two minutes in and I'm a fan. Going to go look up your albums after this, sir.
And now you're my dear Uncle Larry--family now! It's been a great two months since I discovered you Little Tommy from Cleveland--guitar will never be the same for me now. Thank you!
And yet ANOTHER year later and I'm still watching Uncle Larry daily and coming back to what I still believe is the BEST rig rundown ever. Thanks Mr. Bohlinger for introducing so many of us to this absolute genius musician.
One of the greatest RR ever produced for sure. Super insightful! So much knowledge shared! Thank you Premier Guitar and the man himself Tom Bukovac.
that's exactly how and SG (LP) should sound. absolutely perfect
I see you everywhere! And yes, you're totally right, this SG sounds heavenly!
@@versnellingspookie we've got the same good taste in guitar music, my friend. kudos
Nothing sounds better than the dynamics you get from plating with your fingers.
I've watched this so many times... love it. His gear selection is an important lesson to me, and the tone he goes for in a guitar. For instance, that Firebird is just killing the front end of his amp; those P90s must be clobberingly hot, and it sounds great. The tips about the GE-7 and the fact he uses an unmodded one. So much gold here.
Thank you so much for a pleasurable hour spent watching you chat with Tom, fascinating!
"a finished Explosions in the Sky record in a box" - take my money now. need it
Totally awesome rig rundown. Really interesting hearing Tom talk about gear. Love that he is using the M9 too. I have an M5 which I absolutely love. Thanks Tom and PG.

There's something inside me that thinks he meant This Will Destroy You. I've asked on his UA-cam channel and hope he replies.
This is certainly one of the best rig rundowns I've seen. I've loved Bukovac's playing for years
When I want to relax, I stroll on over to Tom's channel and watch/listen. I don't care if he's talking or playing, he exudes peace and it feels goods.
Cant believe I just discovered him. WTH? This guys unreal.
Who could possibly dislike this? One of the best rig rundowns ever. Wish every one demo’d their rigs. It’s a great lesson in application.
I saw Mountain at the Lyceum Ballroom in London in 1969 (or maybe '70) and I couldn't swear to how many amps he had but Leslie West was standing in front of 5 tall SUNN cabs (two stacks and one with amps on top) and it was incredibly loud. Sounded absolutely amazing
This was my favorite one of this series. I just like the way he thinks about guitars and playing
I play guitar but this guy plays music! Even when he strums a chord and a few notes, I think ‘that was like a mini song’ such emotion 👌🙏
The way he uses that Pog is out of this world. Beautiful stuff
I just discovered Tom literally 20 minutes ago today, and I can tell he's a force of nature.
Before Uncle Larry became UA-cam famous ... .and thank God for that...... and for PG, John Bolinger and all the guys .... these videos are my happy place.
