This channel has taught me a lot about the 2nd gen outbacks, thank you so much!
Used this video to change my ATF fluid, filter, and pan gasket today. Thanks for making it, saved me time and money.
Glad to help. 👍🏻
I switched to that fluid on mine. Picked up a mpg or so, as well as much faster shifting.
One gripe I have always had; the manual claims 5-6 quarts for a drain+fill, every 4eat i have done a simple drain+fill on took almost exactly 7.5 quarts.
Another fantastic video man. I finally have the engine off my car on my ‘01 Forester since I’m doing a HG repair. Once I’m done with that, I’ll do this AT fluid service
Bro just wanna say thanks. Trying to do DIY in our “brand used” 02 Impreza 4EAT and your videos were a big help!
You're welcome 👍🏻
MrSubaru1387 any tips on how to clean the pan and bolts?
Wire wheel is great on the bolts. For the pan, a razor, brake parts cleaner, and a brass brush.
“Clean enough to 4eat out of”
Lol . Awesome video, helped me a lot. Thankyou
I LOVE YOU VIDEOS I HAVE 3 SUBARU . 97 legacy outback, impreza 2.5ts and late model forester hff
you make it look so izi that i want to try do it by myself XD i own a 2006 subaru baja na at, same problem, leaky transmission oil pan. thx for all your content!!
It is always a good idea to put a wire brush or soft brush to all bolts and fittings you intend to undo, before you work on underneath of a vehicle. It helps to get sockets on bolts nicely and stops dirt etc from falling on your face and eyes. Also clear safety goggles are great.
Gonna try this on my Baja, quite neglected by old owner. Thanks.
2007 Outback, just did the service and all the cooler hoses.
Filling that transmission was SO slow, not sure if something is wrong.
I had to fill at about 250ml per minute or fluid would back up out of the funnel.
Didnt matter if car was running or not.
Stay gold.
Just used this to drain and refill my 2001 Forester. I had to replace the radiator, so I decided to change the fluid while i had the lines open.
Worked great, especially liked the tip for cycling the transmission through the gears.
I used just over five quarts with my drain and fill, but I had a new radiator to fill as well.
Thanks for the video! I have just changed to ATF oil and filter today, but I forgot to fill that 3 little holes with RTV, what would happen now? Also how to you clean the old RTV so well?
I watch these and it reminds me of my dad he wore the same gloves
Did this process today on my SVX with Permatex Automatic Transmission Gasket Maker (store was out of Ultra Grey), and got a digital torque wrench while I was at it. I was snugging the bolts, and when I got to the back of the pan, a few drops of ATF got between the mating surfaces. I pushed on, torqued all the bolts to spec, and now am letting it cure for 24 hours. Would those few drops of ATF be an issue that the gasket wouldn't seal properly? Thanks!
Sterling work for the community Mr Subaru!
I can't find any in depth videos on the common problem of delayed engagement of drive, I have seen talk about adding a transmission additive but I'd really like to know how to go about doing a real repair. Do you have experience of this? Best wishes!
Straight to the point! Good video! I did the same on my old outback and used a gasket instead of rtv, which one do you think is best? My wagon got rear ended shortly after I did that work so I didn’t get see if it leak at all. Thanks
I prefer the RTV, but it is a pain to clean off of the pan and transmission.
I need help
I got a 2006 Impreza RS Automatic
Every morning when its cold (60 F~) I put it in Drive and when it has to shift to 2nd it goes into neutral-like and the rpm go up to 6k, I have to let go the foot from the acelerator... Any ideas? Car has 88K
You make it look simple thanks
You're welcome 👍🏻
Thanks for the video and was well informed. Only issue I have is putting those jack stands on bare ground. They will sink in and get you trapped or killed underneath. I used 3/4” plywood 12” squares under the jack stands for safety. Thanks
Put planks of plywood under them. Problem solved. Been working on cars in the dirt for ever and never had a jack sink.
My father is a 40 year retired diesel mechanic. He always taught me that when using silicone gasket sealer to snug it up the bolts for the pan but not tight at first. let it sit overnight to cure then torque. This will create a small squeeze like you would get with an o-ring ensuring a better seal. The only reason not to do this would be time constraints like a shop, but if you're already waiting 24 hrs for the silicone to cure you might want to try it and see what you think. Ever since I started doing this, I've never had a even a drop leak.
Never had a leak doing it the way I do either.
MrSubaru I am very impressed by your videos and am glad I found your channel. One more question about this procedure: I have a 05 Outback so is it OK to put Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid in along with the Lucas no slip. Sometimes I think I detect a slight slip when automatic transmission goes from 1rst to 2nd.
I usually only recommend the Dexron version of the Max Life due to Dexron being what Subaru recommends.
Tried to do this on my 99 GTB but the car is extremely low even stock, and it’s hard to find an angle to pry off the pan that doesn’t hurt it. It’s still leaking somewhat from the pan gasket, and the filter is seized on and nearly impossible to get a filter wrench onto. Any recommendations for doing this?
I’ve got a ‘08 forester auto trans with 183K, and embarrassingly enough I don’t know if the AFT has been addressed since I was convinced that a flush should be done (which was a long while ago). Is this the steps I should take to replacing the ATF and providing my car with some much needed love?
I had a leak in the AT cooling line of my 2005 Outback, went to Advance Auto stating make/model/year and the clerk sold me 3 qts. of IDEMITSU Type J. Before getting the line repaired I bought another qt. Now that I have it fixed I looked up capacities and discovered Subaru spec fluid is: Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid, IDEMITSU ATF HP, Castrol Transmax J, Pennzoil ATF-J or Dexron III. So the fluid is probably now about 1/3 IDEMITSU Type J, which is for Nissan/Infiniti, not Subaru. I talked to a tech guy at Idemitsu and he said their Type J will damage the Subaru transmission. Do you have any informed insights into whether I need to get the Type J completely out of the tranny, whether the standard drain plug drain would be good enough, or if in its diluted amount it is OK as is ??? I'm looking for a newer Outback and would prefer not to spend money on the 2005 if I can avoid it, but want to keep it working well.
Does anyone know which transfer duty solenoid is in my 2006 Forester 2.5na 4eat? Garage says it's in the tail extension, but looking online says that's only for the late 90's models.
I have fixed cvts on newer Subarus and they are still driving great for years.
But just got my very first 2001 forester with 4eat...
Trying to remove oil pan on the transmission and one bolt is inaccessible because it is blocked by the catalytic converter.
Bolts on cat are jammed....oops.
On the other hand , your outback seems to have all the room to remove the 10mil bolts on the pan.
👌👌
im interested in what solenoids are notorious for failing on these are and what are the symptoms that should be expected as signs of these failures
im still waiting for the definitive mr subaru special on solenoid replacements in transmission valve bodies, including what the various symptoms of bad solenoids in the valve body of the various transmissions from the 4AT, 5AT, & TR580 AND TR690's. *i have reached a point where i believe it is going to be inevitable for me to have to replace one or two of them to get my soob back in fully functional (reliable driving) mode, and will probably place an order soon as they will take about 2 months to ship to australia. basically im not ready to quit on my outback yet as i believe that once i figure out whats actually been causing the performance issues andd fix them i will likely get another few hundred thousand kms out of it ;) i might even try to find some identical motors and trans from scrap yards and service them for future use etc ?
Love to see a full rebuild of a 4eat trans
Hopefully as soon as I can get a shop built.
Hey question : my trans pan is leaking just like that 247,000 miles on my 2.5 l 2004 Subaru Outback … I plan on changing the fluid and filter , resealing the pan , just like you showed, except I don’t think it’s every been changed , and would I risk doing damage to my transmission if doing what shown in the video (
Great video! Quick question; what's the best way to top up ATF (not refill)? I've noticed a slow ATF leak by my torque converter, so it's not a refill but just to top up what has leaked so far. Is it best to have the engine running or top up when the engine and gearbox are cold/not running?
Pour it into the dipstick tube with a funnel.
So I recently bought a 02 subaru impreza wrx wagon.. It has the at oil light blinking every time I turn the car on, and the check engine light on as well, when putting the car in drive it delays a little to actually engage to run. And when it does it feels like it skips a gear feel like. Any recommendations clues on what could the problem be ty
Good video! I bought the gasket though, definitely worth the cost versus using RTV in my opinion. Especially if you plan on being the next person to service it. 😂
What gasket? Subaru uses RTV. Must be something aftermarket.
@@MrSubaru1387 part # 31397AA041.
My 03 forester is pumping the trans fluid into the diff and out the vent hoses. What is needed to fix this issue? Can’t seem to find much on this issue
I did a oil filter and fluid change but I got a slight kick between gear 2 and 3 also when my tranny its cold it whines until it reaches operating temp. Any advice?
I know this is an old video but im very curious as to why rtv goes in those 3 holes? I used a rubber gasket and was told that these are supposed be sealed fully with rtv but ive always been told never to seal a trans pan with rtv. I have to pull it back apart anyways, fairly certain a solenoid failed since im getting low line pressure.
hola MrSubaru1387
una consulta:
El subaru outback 2.5 litros, de 3 generación año 2008, usa ese mismo ATF. valvoline max life full sintetico ?
saludos
Would putting too much cause a leak? Also what did you use to spread the ultra grey? Putty knife?
MrSubaru1387I know this is an older video but I'm a new subscriber and wanted to thank you for your videos. I have a 2002 Forester L with a automatic. Do you have any experience with Dexron VI in these older Subaru's? Keep up the good work.
All the Dexron formulas are basically interchangeable as far as I know. Dex III or IV should be fine in the older Subarus.
I hear all LGT's are 5eat. Is this true? If so, is the procedure the same?
I bought my 05 LGT at 139k miles and is now at 165k. About 5k miles ago it started a downshift clunk when coming to a stop and reverse/drive clunk. Would ATF change fix my issue? Or should I also clean the low/reverse duty solenoid and pan?
Thanks for sharing another awesome video. I just replace my Transmission mount. No more clunk when going into reverse. 😊. Question for you. My 2000 subura outback had a transmission replace a over a year ago. It does not have the power like a Subaru should. When you come to a stop or climbing his it just dose not have any power. Any suggestions. Think it is a full filter, spark plugs. Not sure. Not check those things yet but what is you thoughts. Thanks
If there are no codes, I'd check the basics. Start by check air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, etc.
My 1999 Legacy 2.5 automatic is starting to shift hard from 1st to 2nd with a loud clicking sound along with it. Where should I start? No codes have come up. Love your channel. I have done 3 repairs and you have saved me $1000 so far:)
When was the last fluid/filter change? What's the fluid condition?
@@MrSubaru1387 Motor was resealed and all fluids changed 50,000 miles ago. Fluid seems fine. Doesn't smell burned. Just hoping it's not an internal selenoid. Thanks
Shock occurs from 1st to 2nd gear.
Possible causes:
-TCM
-Throttle position sensor
-2-4 brake duty solenoid
-ATF temperature sensor
-Line pressure duty solenoid
-Control valve
-2-4 brake
-ATF deterioration
-Engine performance
-2-4 brake timing solenoid
@@MrSubaru1387 Thank you very much for the detailed possible issues. I will get to work on it. Love the ole girl too much to give up on it. Thanks again. You do us a great service.
MrSubaru1387 So glad I found your channel. We've used your video for changing the timing belt on the '09 Forester I picked up at 209k miles, and am about to do a transmission flush this weekend. One question I have is, on all the videos I've seen so far, no one seems to be using the type HP transmission fluid my manual says to use. Is it really okay to change to Merc/Dex, or should I stick to the HP?
The older Subarus uses Dexron transmission fluid. Around 07/08 Subaru came out with the Subaru ATF-HP. Use the ATF-HP in your car.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks for the reply! I'd already bought myself a supply of HP, glad it was the right choice.
@@NiSiSuinegEht you're welcome. 👍🏻
How does one get rusted pan bolts off without snapping them off? Can I use heat?
Also, when you first refill, do you refill it with the engine running or when its off, and fill to the cold line, no??
I have 2008 Subaru Legacy 2.0R with 4 speed auto that has paddle shifters. Is idemitsu ATF type HP correct oil for me?
Hey Mr Subaru, you used permatex ultra grey instead of the Subaru three bond? I'm an idiot and used a felpro gasket on my 95 legacy and it's still leaking (the old black silicone was leaking)
Hi mr subaru, i have a 2009 forester x, i dont see a transmission oil filter, is it inside the pan? And does it need to be changed along with atf change?
Need help! I have a 2010 subaru legacy 2.5i. It has 376-thousand miles on it, the transmission has been slipping on and off for about a year, but lately its getting worse, while driving it changes to all gears, and when reaching a speed and then accelerating the transmission slips. i don't know if servicing it has ever been done on it, and what I'm being told changing the fluid would not be a good ideal especially if it has never been changed. so is there any hope in saving this cvt transmission?
Did i miss something, or did you only put rtv on? I didn't know if there is supposed to be a gasket or if you are just making one with rtv?
I will be doing this to my 2013 subaru crosstrek xv soon
Hello! Change the oil but what about the filtro???
If the pan is not leaking we don't need to drop the pan ? Or do we still need to just to clean out the magnet and pan?
What are your thoughts on changing the fluid in a 200k mile 08 automatic impreza, the old myth of don't change the fluid unless it's been changed consistently, not knowing the cars history what are your thoughts on this. Thanks
What about the radiator and the fluid inside it? Congrats for the explanation my friend
How many quarts again? great video!
You are changing the transmission fluid on Subaru. I have a 2001outback 3.0 is it the same as the video on the 4 eat?
Hola, hay video de una reparacion total de la caja de velocidades del Subaru outback 2007 3.0
Your full hot level looks a little high? I Have been going by the straight line which looks to be about 1 CM past the full top hole in your video.
Why would you recommend the Valvonline vs oem Subaru fluid?
I just got a really clean body 06 baja with mega miles. What ATF is ok to use before i crack on with filter and fluid change? Thanks in advance, A.
What if you did all this and car has a eletrical cllick sound under the hood and no gear engagement?
Good evening mr. Subaru I got a question for you can flushing the transmission by taking the pan out and do a whole flush fixes hard shifting and slipping?
Muhammed Q not Mr Subaru but a good service and flush can help with hard shifting, CAN. In regard to slipping, it could be slipping due to a clogged filter or cooler, it could also be due to worn clutches. Changing the oil and filter if it’s worn clutches can actually make the transmission behave worse due to the fact that there is no clutch material suspended in the oil anymore so it doesn’t have the grip necessary to engage gears. I would take it to an automatic specialist and have them look over it to determine what the cause is.
exelent vídeo Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, I know you made this video over two years ago but I have a question or two. I have a 2012 Forester 4eat with 105k miles on it and I want to change the transmission fluid. I noticed that there was no filter change in your video (unless I missed it) Also I noticed you didn't use subaru's ATF fluid. In your experience, is there a difference in the two fluids? Is there an ATF fluid filter & if so, should I change it? How many quarts does it take to fill the ATF back up if I change the fluid as you showed in the video? Thanks
It may have an external spin on filter, not sure what year they removed them. Older Subarus called for GM Dexron ATF. If your 2012 calls for ATF-HP, use that.
Thank You! for the videos. I have a 2011 Outback; does that model have a transmission filter?
No. It doesn't.
I just bought this vehicle and I want to do a drain and fill but I don't know what size the drain plug washer is. Any help?
Do pan bolts go anti clockwise to tight them in?
Would I use the same oil.
On a 2008 Impreza 2.5i auto trans?
Can i please get a diagram of how the screws go back in place for the filter underneath the pan
I just bought a 2012 Forester with the 4EAT transmission. The transmission fluid has never been changed. Is the Valvoline fluid that used here still a good choice?
Se puede drenar nomas o tiene qe cambiar el filtro interior también?
Hello, im new to the channel. I have a subaru impreza out back 97 (wagon) it has some problem when turning. I heird it my be torque binding. Can you make a video with some info talking about it? Or any info that will help resolve this problem?
Great video. Watched it on 2X, recommend you speed up your videos in the tool work sections. I see you used that DEX MERC LV stuff. Spec is DEXTRON III. Is that a recommended replacement ATF?
As far as I know, all Dexron is compatible, aside from Dexron VI. I've had no issues using tg Valvoline max life Dexron.
@@MrSubaru1387 thanks for the quick reply and the edumacational videos bro
You're welcome. 👍🏻
Question...I have a 2005 Forester. My manual calls for Dexron III. What is the best replacement for it? Some people say Dex/Merc and some say Dex VI and some say to only use Subaru or Idemitsu HP. Can't seem to find a consensus. I'd appreciate your input.
I have a 2006 Forester. I was just looking at the Amsoil website. They offer ATF oil and the external filter. Now I have to decide if I want to buy the OE series or the more expensive Signature series. I have used Amsoil products in many other vehicles for the past 15 years. I signed up for the Preferred Customer which gives you free shipping. I like that they generally offer 3 levels of protection with their oils. Signature Series is the highest and most expensive. Depending on my vehicle use is how I determine if I use OE, XL, or Signature. Mostly I use the XL series. On the website you can select Look up a Vehicle and it will show available products and amounts. Very helpful. Yes, they are not cheap products but I like that they are a company based out of Wisconsin.
Looking to do this job on my 2000 Outback, did you just spray the surface of the trans under the pan with brake parts cleaner? No special procedure?
Yup. It's my all purpose cleaner! Haha
thanks, and nice detailed video too. I just did my first drain and fill in my 03 H6 VDC. I was only able to get 3 quarts out, is this normal,or was my transmission underfilled? I poured 3 1/2 quarts back of MaxLife ATF, now when warm my dip stick reads above cold full.
Sounds like it may still be low. Fully up to temp, engine running, in park, it should register at the full hot level.
MrSubaru1387 thanks Mr.Subaru, I will double check my levels and add as appropriate.
You're welcome. 👍
Any chance you can confirm if that fluid works in a 2010 Subaru Forester with 4eat
Love your video man really helpful ' I have one Question ' how do I reset my ECU on my 2000 Subaru B4 TwinTurbo Legacy
Reset it in what regards? Disconnecting battery for 15 minutes should reset/clear the PCM.
MrSubaru1387 Im having trouble with my Speedo cluster, my RPM,Speed & Fuel gauge seems to be Malfunction 'The RPM will initially sit on 3000Rpm while my Fuel gauge needle is on empty ' with the fuel light on ' really there heaps of gas ' That why I ask for the ECU reset that didn't work ' would this be a Bad ground wire or Sensor?
May be an issue with the cluster. You may need to disassemble the dash, remove the cluster, and look for broken/corroded circuitry.
MrSubaru1387 Thank you man ' I'll look in to it...😁
Hello sir, your channel is great for Subaru owners. Can you orient me where the AT temp sensor?
Amigo, sabes algo del código P0734 de un forestar at 2.0 ? A qué se deberá ese error…tiene reparación o no? Saludos.
First time owning a Subaru it's a 2005 Subaru Forester ll Bean and just wondering if these automatics are just naturally kind of laggy or if I should be worried cause I can feel it shift haven't driven an automatic in a few years.
kevin norman if you can feel it change like almost thump into gear, when cold they can tend to bang a bit but once warm it should change effortlessly. I wold get a service done on it, a fluid flush and have the heat exchanger flow tested as these are the first things to clog with crud and impede flow, causing poor clutch pressures. I had a Nissan patrol that for nearly 6 months never saw overdrive even on the highway as the heat exchanger was too clogged. If that doesn’t solve it I would start looking deeper into the tram Addison control and/or wear on components. I would also check that all your tyres have the same tread depth and pattern as this may cause what seem to be transmission issues.
Is this the same thing as power steering fluid?
Hello! I have a 13 Forester with the 4 speed automatic, I am not too sure if it is the same one you worked on in the video. I plan on doing a fluid change soon. The car has 70k miles. 1- Do you recommend letting it drain just from the plug or should I remove the entire pan to get all the fluid out as you did in the video? 2- Also do you recommend changing the filter? The techs from the dealership mentioned that when they do flushes they don't change the filters unless there's an issue with the tranny. Your response would be greatly appreciated!!
No need to drop the pan, unless it is leaking and needs to be resealed. Like the dealer said, no real need to change the filter, but I still prefer to.
my question is., at what milage is it recommended to service the transmission on an 08'subaru legacy Outback wagon ?
i own a 08'R32 and manual recommendation is to service the Transmission every 90Kmiles// a VW specialist recommends servicing the Trans every@30Kmiles..dude!! at $650 dealer price or even a garage $price is $350 is a substantial amount of $$ for preventable maintenance. so again. When is it recommended to service the transmission on a 2008 Legacy forester outback Wagon ?? Mahalo for your time in answering my query.....
Thanks for sharing, I would happily eat off that pan
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for your videos they have helped so much! What are your thoughts on flushing the trans by undoing the trans line at the radiator and pumping out 2 qts at a time and then filling with 2 qts and repeating?
It's easier just to pull the plug on the pan, drain and refill.
Thats what I was thinking, this is my first subaru and it being used I and not knowing the history of the transmission I just wanted to make sure it has a through flush. But you think it will be fine with just draining the pan and refilling?
I'd drain and refill. I usually don't advise an actual flush.
Ok thanks for your advise. Keep up the great videos and help!!!
You're welcome. 👍
I know this is an old video, but I was curious to ask about the internal filter for the transmission fluid? Not just the outside can style. Did that also get changed and or did you go for a flush of the system and then replace the fluid?
There isn’t an internal filter.
Is it ok to mix synthetic with conventional if I just plan on draining and filling?
If you use quality brand that fits Subaru specs i was told this would be fine by penrite, atf has strict standards and they've never had an issue.
You work at Subaru too? Sick. my trans pan has been leaking for a bit but I haven’t been able to find a gasket or the time to do it.
Hello would you recommend the max life in a2009 forester thanks in advance
Was this car still shifting without having the ATF changed in 275,000 miles?
How did you decide not to remove the screen filter?
Yes was shifting fine. Still shifts fine now at 287k miles. The internal mesh strainer/pickup doesn't need to be replaced. You clean it if there is any debris, but that's it.
Whoa... that was some nasty ATF
MrSubaru1387 Have had my '05 Outback about 3 months and am preparing to do this soon. So, no gasket? And no waiting time with the grey gasket maker? Just want to be sure. My atf is very old I'm sure. Should I change the filter as well?
No gasket. Just RTV. The RTV needs 24hrs to cure before introducing fluid. Screw on filter, yes. Always a good idea.
Are these motors prone to leaking? I did a top-end several years ago so I replace the head gaskets and every other seal I could find. Unfortunately I now have a new leak and the oil filter was loose and I thought I got lucky real lucky so I just put a new one on while I was at it and that did not solve it have any suggestions?
Hard to say without being able to see the vehicle.
Just noticed that you did all that work in taking the pan off and such, but you didn't even replace the filter (or screen they get small metal flakes in there too) that was there. So what was the purpose of taking the pan off other than to clean the mess out of the pan?
It's not a filter, just a strainer. I cleaned the strainer. The pan was seeping. I removed it to reseal it.
When replacing a A/T Subaru should get the TCM reprogramming done as welll?
Mean O’ Dustino not usually necessary from my experience but a learned value clear and “quick learn” to relearn kiss points of clutches may be a good idea even just to account for wear over time.
One other question, upon the first (and subsequent) level checks to get the level right following all this, my 'oil temp' light keeps flashing. The level is spot on, but it keeps flashing every time I start the car. What might have caused that? Seems to drive and shift fine.
Flashes only at start up? Or stays flashing as long as the car is on? If the temp light flashes on cold start, you have transmission codes active.
@@MrSubaru1387 Stays flashing as long as the car is on (so far... haven't taken it for any drive greater than 5 minutes yet out of an abundance of caution).
Hey man, been watching a lot of your videos, even if they aren't related to my forester. Just wanting to soak up as much info and knowledge as I can. I'd really love to see you do a video on a duty C solenoid replacement if you ever have an opportunity to do one. I know my car needs that job done, but the only info I can find so far is on forums. A video would be a great addition to that tho. Keep it up man

I have to do mine as well. No videos anywhere. I might attempt it tomorrow
I might as well make a video I'm currently in the middle of doing it.
Hello, My 06 Tribeca 3.0 H6 needs ATF change, I did a search, some subaru owners uses purple Royal ATF, but my user manual say to add IDEMITSU type HP, Castrol Transmax J, which one should be better??
+Ismael Forester use what's recommended by Subaru.
