Meta Quest 3 Outdoors Test ☀ in the Sun

  • Correction:
    Beatsaber scene was "Expert" mode not "Expert+" mode as mentioned in the video.
    Additional Info:
    1.) Under developer options you can turn off security boundaries. This disables the ability to use pass-through mode in the home environment. However in many mixed reality apps it works and the annoying warning can be disabled this way.
    2.) The max guardian area on Quest 3 is around 10x10 meters or 100 square since I did 12 steps (step size slightly below 1 meter).
    3.) I don't know what determines the orientation of the play area, my guess would be the direction you look when resetting the home screen by pressing the meta button before the set up process of the boundary.
    4.) Using the headset without a face cushion seems to work a bit better with the BOBOVR M3 halo head strap which is more stable then the cheap one I currently use.
    5.) The safety and warranty guide of Quest 3 contains a warning regarding outside use: It says:
    "Not recommended for use outdoors. Because of uncontrolled hazards to arise (for example, uneven slippery surfaces, weather conditions and unexpected objects/vehicles/people/animals). Lighting conditions that are too bright may prevent your Quest's sensors and navigation safety features from working optimally, and may lead to tracking loss."
    In my testing running fast and elevation changes can lead to issues plane fields even with monotone green surrounding worked very well.

    You can probably still get the 30$ even after you bought the headset. You have a few days time window to reset your headset to factory settings via this page secure.oculus.... and after resetting go through the normal referral process. The links seem to be country specific and it might only work with completely new accounts.
    The app referral codes is another way to save money. They give you 25% off. They are not country specific. You should use them when daily deals are not available, the Quest games are just too expensive.

    Grips:
    I use the VRCover ones but they need to be modified (sand paper) in the grip button area to be comfortable.

    Look out for upcoming quest 3 versions. The Quest 2 ones fit but you need to clamp in the safety lanyard to prevent slipping.
    Facial Interfaces:
    Look out for Quest 3 versions from VRCover. The leather ones for Quest 2 were excellent and available in different thicknesses to increase field of view + holes for better ventilation reducing lenses fogging.

    Harry Potter fußball, that's hilarious 🤣. It would be marvellous to get a lot of people outside to play something using a VR headset.
    Your outdoor experiment was very informative; I have only briefly tried to go outside today in the very bright sunshine here in Canberra, with similar results to yours. It certainly looks like the Quest3 is capable of being used outside, as long as it isn't raining of course.

  • @Cam-wm6eh
    @Cam-wm6eh 10 місяців тому

    Of course it works. The only thing you risk using it outside is the lens in the eye sockets will pinpoint the Sunlight to a point, and burn pixels on the display screen, possibly causing the whole screen to burn up if left on long enough. It only takes a few seconds as well. I tried it with my old oculus quest headset.

    Thank you very much for your test/review! This was exactly what I wanted to know. I also have a way too small living space to play certain games (like Superhot) and wanted to play outside, only to find that was not possible with the Quest 2. This is 1 of the reasons, I was looking to upgrade to Quest 3 and you now showed me it is not only possible, but works great! PS: If you start from the middle, you should be able to go further away on all sides of the field, before the warning starts. ;)

    • @VR_Wizard

      I am glad you liked it.
      Yes if you want to avoide seeing the popup you should wait until you get the popup once, then go to the middle of your play area and then aknowladge the popup warning to make the middle of your play area the new starting point.
      I haven't spend much time researching these popup warnings and if it is possible to turn them off, maybe there is a simple switch in the settings somewhere.
      I don't even know if there is any game that can make use of the massive pass through mode. I only know of the zombis in your house and the Space Pirate Trainer DX games which make use of passthrough and could benefit from a large playarea.
      Most games available are designed to be used with a fixed boundery setup and the max boundery area of around 10x10 meters (100 square meters).
      But also on Quest 2 there where the experimental settings which allowed you to disable the guardian system.
      Mybe its possible set up a normal guardian area, then disable the boundery warnings in the experimental mode and then use the whole footbal field without getting these popups. Maybe these popups are only used in the pass through mode. Looks like more testing is needed and I need to produce a follow up video.
      I also found out that when trying to use the scan your room app that comes pre installed on quest 3 and I try to scan a whole sports hall the scanning just fails with a strange error even thow it scanned and recognised all the walls of the sports hall. So there are still bugs in the software, seems like Meta has not put a focus on large playspace areas.

      You are right camera lenses can be demaged by sunlight. The demage happens if the sensor gets to hot. Big lenses in professional cameras can have big magnifications and there this is relevant.
      Small cameras however do not create so much heat and in general there is no problem even when you take pictures of the sun with your phone.
      I dont see why it should be different with the cameras in the VR headset. I personally do not worry about it.

The quest is not ment to be taken outside so no developer is making games for this use case. But I showed that VR games work as well however it is also a bit dangerous because you dont see the surrounding.

    The maximum zone check is interesting. Probably with reasons due floats for games. Very big areas have extreme floats and so calculation errors will happens. This is why you cannot go bigger. If someone want do room games with it, they need make sure room is slight smaller than maximum zone.

    • @VR_Wizard
      @VR_Wizard  11 місяців тому

      That might be true. I also tried the app that comes on the Quest 3 which allows you to scan multiple rooms or the whole house and creates a boundery system automatically when you finished scanning all the walls of your rooms.
      I tried it in a huge sports hall but it always failled to finish the setup process and told me I have to rescan the playspace.
      My current hypothesis is that the sports hall I tryed to scann was to big. I will retry after the next updates, because I think this is a bug which might get resolved in the future. Since I would like to play in sports halls it would be nice to save them, rescanning these large halls takes a long time.

    Thanks for testing this, tried it today in the Scottish winter on a cloudy day in a forest, and the hand tracking didn’t work perfectly, the finger pinch menu was glitching and the icon was flashing, also it hated the slope of the forest and it wanted a ‘room’ with walls. Going to test it some more, going to avoid sunny days though I don’t want to break it

    • @VR_Wizard
      @VR_Wizard  9 місяців тому

      I did not notice the hand tracking to be noticably worse. But even indoors I dont use it since it is to inaccurate and using the controllers is so mich better. Apple seems to bet everything on handtracking but meta seems not to focus on that to much.
      I don't see any reason why hand tracking should be worse outside. The ligting is probably much better so I would even expect the hand tracking to work better.
      Outside lighting even on cloudy days is significantly brighter then normal indoor lighting.
      The only reason to make it worse I can think of is when the sun blinds the camera and the image is to bright to see anything.

      hey@@VR_Wizard thanks for the reply, I find this a VERY interesting area of research
      I've found hand tracking really cool for certain tasks, I like the minimalism of it, I hate having the faff of the controllers
      hand gestures can open up a whole new world of UX for computing
      I will be watching apple very closely, but not wanting to spent $3500 on it soon!
      I did some more tests on quest3 today, and its a bug in my unity app somehow I think
      hand tracking works OK in the oculus menus when I use it outside
      my app works fine indoors
      but there is some weird factor that makes my app weird outdoors, the physics are off and the pinch menu glitches too
      might be a clash with other features in my app like the depth API which I find a bit glitchy sometimes (its experimental)

      I would also like to know and I am planing to make my next video about it. I am currently in the research phase for this. I think as a developer in the game engine you have more abilities to change that. For example on Lego Bricktales when switching to AR mode and walking away you also get a warning but it is a different one and the warning does not destroy the 3d scene. So this means developer seem to be able to change or disable this warning in their AR apps or AR apps do not get this warning altogether and the developers of bricktails introduced the warning themself which seems like the most plausable explaination to me.
