- The undefeated Nigerian heavyweight slugged it out old-school style, hit like a freight train and was growing to become a superstar. Scaring the living daylights out of victims inside the ring, it was outside of it where he was truly terrifying, guided by the voices in his head. Today’s story is about a god-given talent, fierce battles, and mental breakdown of Ike Ibeabuchi.

That Ike Vs. Tua Fight was like The Unstoppable Force meets the Immovable object. Those men were beasts.
It's kinda funny that the punches landed in the Rocky movies don't actually seem too absurd by old standards. These guys actually showed solid defense but no matter what, both men were gonna eat monster shots. I feel like half those punches would be knockouts in modern heavyweight boxing.
Of course, I can't really fault modern boxers for fighting different. Seems like a lot of those old school brawlers ended up broke and brain-dead.

Sadly, here in Nigeria we didn’t hear of him. He was hardly/never mentioned in any sporting channels. But we celebrated M Ali and Tyson here and forgot our own don and brother who was equally as talented and fierce. Thanks for the documentary

I'm 51. I followed Ike from beginning to end. I wish he had better people in his camp. His bipolar disorder was real. That fight with David Tua opened an extremely "dark" door that couldn't be shut. People that can't get a mental grip on life go through HELL, for others to just call them crazy. As powerful as our minds can be, one slip up can cause an avalanche of destruction.

All the public can do is try to protect itself from these folk's actions. No judgement on the heart and mind, just stopping the behavior so other troubled souls are not created. Like vampires. Our minds can only take do much, then they snap.
That fight versus Tua was most likely the best heavy weight bout I've ever seen...I couldn't sit still while watching it. The sheer volume of punches being exchanged was astonishing for that weight class, especially considering that power these guys posessed.

Both David(Tua) & Ike gave so much of themselves in their legendary meeting that they should be paid royalties on rebroadcasts. I dont think these men were ever the same. The double edged sword….its what we want too see, but its also what cut these fighters(esp Ike) career short. Absolutely unbelievable night of boxing by these 2 great warriors!

Zeljko Mavrovic was another heavyweight from that era that never became a champion. He didn't have bone crushing power, but he had an amazing chin. He took some bombs from Lewis, who said that was the hardest fight of his career.

I saw Ike - Byrd when it aired, and I will never forget the way Chris was literally drooling from that knockdown shot. As slick as Byrd was, you just had a feeling he was on borrowed time in that fight.

Different mentality exists today compared to then. If you bring that same mentality into 2023 boxing will become a snore fest. Not because the lack of skill but simply because the human brain gets tired of the same old.
Back then fighters were mean and hungry, now they're all middle-class fairies who do it solely for the pay check and celebrity. Everytime i watch a fight they always look like they'd rather be anywhere else. Then then say they'll take their opponents clean heads off but barely break a sweat, that's if we're lucky to see them fight each other cos they all have deal's with rival networks! It used to be the most iconic title anywhere but the greedy "brothers" and their arrogance have ruined this sport as well as every other they partake in.
@@theriddick2735 Partly true, however boxing is no longer all guns blazing using the biggest gun I.e heavy weights that throw a hard punch. Audiences in professional boxing these days (probably due to Mayweather and before him Naseem) are more interested in boxers that think rather than all braun. Regardless of the weight division. The demand for big boxers back then has dropped significantly today. That is probably why we don't see the heavy weight division today as it once was in the past (numerous). Entertainment mentality changes in every sport.
I am a Nigerian and this is my first time reading about this all my life so far. So sad that his inner demons killed his career at the peak... He didn't lose his Life though, he had more opportunities than most and got to fight and beat future World Champions. He can still use this achievements to his advantage. He gained 3 degrees in Prison and came out with a clean slate in 2020.
Was one of my favorite fighters. Should have been able to receive proper care when he started to go off the rails.
Some of the most intelligent minds are the most tormented ones... Ike picked up boxing so fast and had excellent fight instincts.
Whoever his trainer was, was a blessing. This guy started off throwing to the walls, and ended as a refined machine. Blessings

@@thedarksideoftheforce6658 not all of them though... whats crazy is Tony had an amazing guard game and was super hard to hit. But apparently it comes down to a certain gene people have in addition to being hit. So some seem to be more prone than others. Some can take it and others cant.
I do a little muay thai. Been in a lot of fights in and out the gym... tbh most times you literally can feel your brain swell off one hit ngl... most shots give me a headache immediately and i wonder if its like that for others... i never actually asked another fighter come to think of it

I was at Ike vs Tua...it was insane watching two heavyweights swinging their arms as if they were lightweights! Neither of them seemed gassed at the end, it was an incredible fight!

Ike was an anomaly, one in a million. No heavyweight of his generation possessed more ability. He was a prodigy. He had amazing power. He had fierce determination and he had no fear of anybody, and he believed that he was the King, that nobody could beat him.
He’d walk into the ring and you would almost have this vision of a bull coming at a matador with the steam coming out of the nostrils. Unfortunately, here was a very scary man both in and out of the ring. And it’s unfortunate that we’ll never know what could have been.
Bob Arum: "I don’t know, but it was the Heavyweight division and people love a puncher, and while he probably couldn’t have made what Mike Tyson made, but he would have been damn close. You know, hundreds of millions of dollars, sure. But again, again, that’s life, that’s life. You have to be a person, you have to be sane, you have to comport yourself with some kind of dignity and some kind of grace in order to realize that type of reward, and he couldn’t do it."
21 months later, Ibeabuchi confirmed that he was indeed the best up-and-coming heavyweight on the planet by knocking out undefeated 26-0 quick and slick southpaw Chris Byrd. Ibeabuchi was 20-0 with 15 knockouts, only 26 years old .. and he never fought again.
Byrd: "I got a little arrogant, thinking I’m unhittable. Cause I just thought, Oh man, he can’t hit me! I’m gonna slip everything. And, boom, just got caught. When I got knocked down the first time, I got, literally, the canvas woke me up. I was asleep before I hit the ground, and when I hit the canvas it woke me up. I asked the referee why he stopped the fight? What are you doing? "The bell rung!" But my bell was still ringing, that’s what was ringing, was my bell."
Ibeabuchi would have been the heir to Lewis throne. The Klitschko's would have been gate keepers if he was around. Ike was a Super Heavyweight with serious power, great speed, chin of iron, a boxer and a brawler, freakish stamina, threw punches in bunches, and had a ridiculous workrate with KO written all over his punches.
After the fight, Ibeabuchi complained of a headache and was taken to a hospital. He underwent several tests, including an MRI scan, but nothing abnormal was found and was immediately released. A week after the fight, Tua had surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow. And Ike's in🎃sanity had nothing to do with anything he injested like roids, he was too paranoid of medications to take anything illegal.
🦁Soft spoken Lennox Lewis at his best was the total package. When he fought seriously he was pretty much untouchable. The last undisputed Super Heavyweight champion emerged as cream of the crop against some of the biggest punchers in Heavyweight history.
Lewis avenged his only two defeats by knockout. He didn't make excuses for his only two losses, he said, "It's Heavyweights, you can get caught, but i won the rematches in style," and "Show me a Heavyweight Champion without a loss and i'll show you a fighter that fought a lot of nobodies."
Lewis haters always say, "but he got knocked out twice ha-ha." Well i say, "Mike Tyson got knocked out FIVE times ha-ha, and Ali lost his best 30 years of retirement from having his faculties traumatized for an entire decade. Watching his head used as catchers mitt 100,000 times was ha-ha. IT'S NOT HOW YOU START, IT'S HOW YOU FINISH."

When "The President" Nigerian Ike Ibeabuchi met "The Tuamanator" Samoan David Tua the Nigerian got out to an insanely fast start, throwing 91 punches in round one according to CompuBox, 91 again in round two, and 95 in round three, obscene numbers for a Heavyweight. By the final bell, Ibeabuchi and Tua had combined to throw 1,730 punches, breaking the Heavyweight record set by Ali vs Frazier III, when they combined for 1,591 punches - in 14 rounds, two rounds more than Ibeabuchi and Tua had to work with. Ike threw 975 punches, the most ever by a single Heavyweight. Both fighters had a brawling fight style, they were both 24 years old at the time of this epic "tribal" battle, and they were both undefeated going in to this fight. 226lb Tua's record stood at 27-0-0 23KO's while 236lb Ibeabuchi's record stood at 16-0-0 12KO's. This fight is the stuff that dreams were made of. Two warriors stood toe to toe and gave it their all, showing exceptional heart and endurance.

You can see who truly won the fight in the long run. One is a balanced, humble family man and the other is an unbalanced multiple felon having served a 30 stretch facing deportation.

Lots of power, but also efficient with his punching. For a big guy, he was really good at conserving energy and making his punches count. Watching him end Byrds dance was a masterpiece.

He fought 2 good fighters out of 20. I'll give it to him he won both those fights and no doubt was a very good fighter, but he didn't face the best the 90s had to offer Hollyfield, Tyson, lewis, bowe, mercer, Morrison etc. Wish we could have seen some of those matches go down. Shit happens.

@turbofreek nah, he never fought Holyfield. His 2 biggest wins were against David Tua and Chris Byrd. Both who were undefeated at the time. The rest of his opponents were pretty mediocre. He was really good, anyone who can stand toe to toe with Tua for 12 rounds and come out on top is a stud. But for whatever reason legal or otherwise he missed out on a lot of the best fighters of that era. Some of them probably didn't want to fight him.

Holy crap!! I have never heard of this guy. Started watching the succession of fighters he marched thru at the beginning, and then when Tua showed up, you knew this was a real heavyweight. To call that fight a slug fest is a gross understatement. That was scary.
The 90’s was the golden era for heavyweight boxing… so many “also ran” fighters who would probably be world champions in todays era… unfortunately this guy was genuinely unhinged & had quite severe mental illness, heard some extremely bizarre stories about his behaviour

Every once in a while you see a guy who you just KNOW is going to be the HW champ. Ike was definitely that guy. A shame he had so many problems. He's still undefeated.

I always wanted to fight in the ring. I believe I have a natural talent but this guy is INSANE! SCARY ASS DUDE! One guy I would never want to fight, simply because he doesn't seem to tire, you can't knock him out, and he won't give up throwing those devastating blows. He just doesn't seem human...

I stopped fighting when I realized the demons I was wrestling with were fueled and exercised by getting to hurt someone without consequences. Trauma can be powerful fuel when fighting but it also be dangerous to live that life if you can’t get rid of that anger

@@johnnyringo2695 lol most likely, still the conclusion he came to was right. But combat sports can be more then just hurting someone else. Learning about your body, getting better everyday, flow states, high stake situations, etc. If you start to focus more on the other aspects and just allow that "fuel" to flow, it won't ever come back to bite you. Understand yourself and that you and your "dark side" are one and the same. IT is YOU. Not some other being called your "dark side". IT comes out like any other emotion / side of you, Just like how a smile comes out when you are happy. According to different conditions you will feel different and it is Controllable, changeable and predictable. Its nothing to be afraid of, In fact it is a gift. But Like with everything, Its only good within a balance. Too much good, will get you killed just like too much bad will.

Ferocity was more easily seen back then because they weren’t as technical. He wouldn’t be landing as many haymakers against the modern more technical fighters. But I agree there was a larger number of dudes with power back in the day. The sport was more popular and drew more challengers, so it really only makes sense

Thank you for sharing this story. I didn't even know who Ibeabuchi was. He was a powerful fighter. He was impressed with Mike Tyson & you can see similar style in his fights. So sad, his biggest battle was the mental illness.

Tyson was too small & never did well against pressure fighters. Ibeabuchi had power stamina and high boxing IQ.
