I’m a valet guy and a valeted an immaculate 5.0 Eddie Bauer Explorer the other day and it had 245k miles on it. Everything was in comparable shape to this one and it blew my mind.
The Mountaineer is One Solid Rock. Mine is the Burgundy/Dark Red and Yes. We are still Riding Good. The V8 is my Best Friend 306K Miles !! Total Awesome SUV. ☑
Great assessment of the pros and cons of these vehicles. I bought my 2001 Mountaineer, 5.0 2wd 5 years ago for $2000 and figured I'd drive it a year or so. It had 165K on it, now 5 years later I'm still driving it daily with 249K and it still runs great. The 5.0 engine makes it in my opinion. These trucks have great utility and they're so cheap you can enjoy them and use them without worrying about them. It is not a huge vehicle to maneuver but somehow manages to be very roomy inside when it comes to cargo. Front seats are a little cramped for taller folks but fine once you're settled in. The interiors hold up pretty well, meaning the creaky plastic doesn't succumb to sun damage as badly as others. If you find one that's been taken care of, it will be a trusty friend that will grow on you over the years.
Just bought a 2000 Mountaineer as my first car. I'm pretty happy to see all the positive perks of owning this vihical makes me feel like I made a good choice
I have the very exact same year, pkg, & color one in AZ. Drove it home for $800 with 183k mi. Freshened it up with another $800 in parts. Now has 237k mi on it, including a trip to MI and back. Just to see, at 55mph got 23mpg. Had my german shepard bark in that msg recorder.
Picked up a SUPER clean 97 Oxford white mountaineer a month ago. 3 grand..... and the miles!? 107,000. Unreal find... was a grandmas church car for 55,000 miles then a commuter for college. Videos coming soon!
The Ford small-block (aka Windsor V8) is a series of 90° overhead valve small block V8 automobile engines built by the Ford Motor Company from July 1961 to 2002. The last vehicle to have the 302 Windsor was the 2001 Ford Explorer SUV and it was the last North American installation of the engine, and Ford Australia used it through 2002 in the Falcon and Fairlane. It was first installed in the 1962 model year Ford Fairlane and Mercury Meteor. Originally produced with a displacement of 221 cu in (3.6 L), it eventually increased to 351 cu in (5.8 L), but was most commonly sold (from 1968-2000) with a displacement of 302 cu in (later marketed as 5.0 L).
@@BigOvlogger I have a question it might sound stupid but do you know if there’s any easy way to make my 99 5.0 rwd instead of awd? I like the awd torque but I wanna roast the tires lol
Mine is a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer AWD 5.OL 302V8. It is black on tan. It has almost 246,000 miles and the engine still runs like new. I LOVE it. I just bought Cooper Discovery AT tires for it. With these tires and the all-wheel-drive, I can go anywhere.
This is exactly what I'm getting because I'm looking for something that feels like a ranger but also feels like a crown vic wagon and also because I get a great sense of nostalgia because my family had one and it ran well. I also want to turn one into a lowrider.
Oh man I logged some miles in a 1999 explorer limited with the 5.0. Man it was a great truck. Sucked gas but I didn’t care. I bought it in 2001 from ford dealer it had 38k miles on it. Black on tan. And I got a free set of Michelin’s due to the Firestone debacle. Miss that ole truck. Such a solid truck. Nice find!
I have the same one you are talking about.
First off I just want to say that I'm glad that you're still out here making videos. I remember watching your channel way back in the day (I'm talking like 2008 or 2009) But anyway yeah these things are completely unrefined. They are old school trucks and they drive like it lol. But you're dead on about the reliability. I've got a 97 with at least 200,000 miles on it (odometer is broken) that I specifically keep around because they're reliable and make for great back-up vehicles. They're like the Crown Vic of SUVs. The only point I disagree with is that these aren't meant for the highway. IMO that's where they shine. I'm not saying that they're the best highway cruisers but they do better on the highway than city driving. I haven't done something like this in years but I had a 98 back in 2011 and it was perfectly stable even at it's electronically limited 109 mph top speed. Again not the ideal vehicle for those types of speeds but they will surprise you.
I’m putting a 5.0 in my mountaineer in a few weeks (well, my brother in law is lol) super excited Edit: I had a 1996 gmc jimmy once with a v6 that I adored so I’m really looking forward to getting this beast up and running properly
When I was little We had an 01 mountaineer jet black with gold bottom molding with only 61k! By far my personal favorite car we ever had. I wish I could find another one like it that’s in great shape.
my brother had a 94’ it just died on us a few months ago, the interior was good, it’s problem was the lift kit from the previous owner was bad and the water pump blew
The Ford Explorer Limited of this body style was the best of the bunch. I believe the older ones had an optional air suspension too although I’m not sure if that really helped with the ride or not.
I found a 99 with a few rust spots over the wheel wells and has engine tick when I accelerate bit I picked it up for $1100 with 137000 miles on it... I feel it's a diamond in the rough...
I have a sport trac and plan on building just that, a Mercury Mountaineer Sport Trac, aka a sport trac with a full mercury swap, interior minus door panels, and drivetrain including the awd setup, and mercury badging on the exterior.
Shayne Mc Nah this is the Windsor single (in Block) pushrod engines. The 4.6 is a modular engine. These got the 5.0 in years after the stang and panther platform graduated to mod engines
You still have your 96? Also my commentary on your complaints about the ride are you are running LT tires on that truck, which are 10 ply examples. Change over to a 6 ply tire and then say the ride is harsh.
thecarexpert21 Most people didn’t. That’s why Mountaineer sales lagged behind the Explorer. You could get an Explorer Limited or Eddie Bauer trim and get the exact same truck.
There’s one in my town with 198,000 miles on it. The guy wants $4900 for it. It appears to be well taken care of. At $4900, do you feel it’s over priced? By the way, it is a year 2000 and a 1 owner.
I got my 1999 5.0 for 5k in I’d say like 2012 or 2013 it now has 200,055 miles 5k is a little much considering it’s 198k miles. I’d say honestly invest in a mechanic coming to check it out, if he doesnt find anything seriously wrong then yes you definetly NEED to fucking buy it. Trust me.
But if the interior is in good shape and exterior as well then I would buy it without a mechanic checking it, but just to be safe I’d have someone check it out

Also I said I got it in 2012 or 2013 actually my parents bought it then it’s been a family truck and stopped driving it about 5 years ago and it’s been sitting, took it for a drive the other day and engine is very nice still after sitting with no oil change but I’m doing that today or tomorrow lol
