Too bad the Mountaineer could never compete with the Explorer. While Mercury got the Mountaineer, Lincoln got the Navigator a year later because Lincoln mercury dealers wanted SUVs to sell, mercury also got the mariner (glorified ford escape) for the 2004 model year and Lincoln got the aviator (glorified ford explorer) for the 2003 model year.
I moved to the USA and got a mint 97 all options single owner with 70k miles, its a great car, has the dynamics and NVH of a tracktor but its really sold wityh its boomy V8! Drinks more than me thou haha its not an economy car
I am thinking how would look a Mountaineer based on the Ford Explorer from 1991 - 1994. I want to think in the light bar instead of grill from old Mercury cars like the first two generations of the Sable or the Topaz. :"D
This generation Explorer started off terrible, my Aunt had a '96 and it spent almost as much time in the dealer as it did in her driveway. But, they really came around in a big way toward 2000, and I've known a few people to have great luck with '99-'01 Explorer and Mountaineer. Personally, I'd love a 2000 Mountaineer Premier with the V8 and AWD.
Justin Stewart it depends on how you maintain it I haven’t had any problems with my 1997 I work on my own and do not go to a mechanic or dealer that’s way too pricey
@@fernandorocha-dx1wv The Bronco II was junk & any Explorer generation after this has been pure trash. You’re forgetting to mention the Expedition too.
@@2H2521 what makes the bronco ii junk? Mine has been fine and the push rod v6 is very similar in design to the push rod 4.0. Manual trans in one is phenominal and the way to go for sure. Great in snow, decent quality and good price. Pretty damn good engine that has ran pretty good for 7 years that I've had it
Love that they kept the 5.0 in these and Exploer way after most of the V8s in Fords were the 4.6. Not a Ford guy but they're both great engines.
I always thought the trim on the Mercury looked better than the Ford's. When they really separated them in 2002 they really looked awful.
I never understood why they thought this was distinguishable enough to sell along side the explorer when it’s the same car
Cadillac did the same thing in 1999 with GREAT success (Escalade) - It wouldn't work today but it definitely did then.

Mercury Moutaineer introduced from 1996. Mercury Moutaineer is also engine 5.0 V8 210hp, 275 LB-Ft toruqe
Anthony Rivera I’ve owned both I definitely prefer the Mountaineer over the explorer.
I love these I own one and I love it and will never sell it 😊

I love this Mercury Mountaineer.

What radio de differential?
Is positive?
Oof, that mpg
That shit would never fly these days.
Not bad really. Got 18 easily when we borrowed my in-laws 97... that's not much off from v6 minivans
$35k and for $3k more, you could’ve gotten a comparable Tahoe or Suburban at the time.
Damn, these things were soooo underpowered.
And still somehow managed only 18 MPG on the highway.
Lol these actually had decent power not to much and that’s why they lasted
Def not. Very peppy with fantastic throttle response.
We make 540 all motor on are off road mercury mountaineer
Back in 1997 that was good power actually.
One of the best SUV’s ever made, the Ranger platform fit these superbly.
Mercury Moutaineer, Ford EXplorer, Ford Bronco and Bronco II is best SUVs of Ford
