What Do The Letters On The Gear Shifter Mean-2 Minute Driving Lesson
Вставка

- In this video, I tell you what the letters on the gear shifter mean. There will likely be letters beside the gear selector in your car, and those letters all mean something. Some of them are straightforward and well-known, and others aren't. I explain what each of the most common letters mean on the gear shifter, and tell you what they do.

I think most people need the info for just the S and L as all other letters are known. So 1:55 onwards in what people need to watch.
Had buddy’s who needed everything so I showed him this video.
thanks bro
i was wondering what the s meant on my new honda lol thats awesome to know
On my lexus, S means Shift
Haha thanks
P : PARK
R : REVERSE
N : NEUTRAL
D : DRIVE
S : SPORT MODE
L : LOW (KEEP IT ON LOW GEAR)
I’ve been watching your videos for driving and everything and I think I actually learnt something from this and I’m proud of that!!! Thanks! It will give me the knowledge to actually know something before learning to drive, I’m still a beginner!
i use S mode in freeway when I can see long distance of uphill.. it gives faster acceleration vs D slow when going up. It also holds your speed when going downhill vs on D when your not pressing the gas :)
Using S mode on the freeway is not a good idea because of the fact that there's no O/D
You suppose to drive in Low mode going up and down a hill
@@soleil2269 I think it depends on what speed you want to keep while you are on the long slop.
@@soleil2269 some HRV doesnt have L... i use D?
Anyone else feels like clearing their throats
Lozenges should be banned anywhere he goes. His voice is actually hot. LOL.
Yes
😂😂😂😂
it's good that you explained it shortly and understandably
You nailed it! Thank you, great explanation!
Thanks for explaining it. Been trying to explain to my non-car friends, but didn’t know how to explain it in lame-man term.
Just watch it because I will have my first test drive after not driving for 5 years! Kinda forget all the basics!
Thanks short and clear sir
Helpful video I couldn't figue out what the s on my civic meant
Stupid question: switching between P/R/N/D should only happen when the car is stationary, but you can switch from D to S and L while moving, right? (Sorry European guy here just getting familiar with automatic transmission)
Not on an automatic transmission, only when stopped (e.g. traffic light), only manuals can shift when driving.
@@gUuUuyYys no sir, sorry but you're wrong
You can shift from D to S and L while driving, it is meant for 🙂
Does having the car constantly on S damage the engine? Or is it fine to drive long distances with it on that gear as opposed to it being on drive.
Well definitely you will burn more gas and I'd say your killing the engine slowly
Malik The Viner and transmission
Your car will be perfectly fine driving in S. Car manufacturers would not just add it if it was going to damage your vehicle.
S does use more gas and does put a little more strain on the engine/transmission, although it's not by much.
You can minimize the extra strain on your transmission / engine by driving in D until your heat gauges go to about a quarter of the way, then switch to S (I think this is the better option, since D reving at lower RPMs so your engine can warmup before switching it to a higher RPM)
Or just drive in S and baby it until heat Guage goes up slowly, then have fun.
Just remember, driving your car cold whether or not that be in D mode or S mode is going to add wear and tear to your vehicle.
Slowly warm up your vehicle if you're gonna floor it hard, and change all the fluids and make sure you keep up with the maintenance.
Thank you so much for the clarity amazing. You are the best.
Thank you very much for your help
Thank you
D - Day driving,R - Race driving mode, N - Night driving, P- when you're passing,S - Slow driving, L- when you're driving aLone
just stfu atp ! 💀😂😂😂😂

Can we shift gear D to S/L on moving condition?
ye
@@naoking8948 how by pressing brake and moving it or just press the button on the shifter?
@@TheCountDook same doubt here .. pls answer anybody
I wanna know too!
I don't press the on the brakes while shifting you could do it while your car is in motion. For example if I drive up a steep hill I'll go 70 mph let go of the gas and shift into sports mode and then drive up hill until I'm at a level road then I'll shift back into drive. Just a friendly reminder change your transmission fluid and transmission cooler filter and gaskets every 30,000 miles and change your transmission fluid gasket and transmission filter on the oil pan every 60,000 miles.
So what type of auto is that? A ctv or conventional?
wheres the turbo button
Can u use L gear for when it snows? I use that sometimes so it doesnt make the wheels spin way too fast
Can you switch from S to D while driving on freeway?
Yes
@David-tg4xl so you don't have to pres in the brake to shift while moving? And I'm assuming it can shift while moving as long as you are not on the gas
Thank you
very informative
When do u engage sport fro leaving park position because u can't change gears while moving or can you
Tanks for explaining
On my 1981 Berlinetta camero it goes P,R,D,S,L. Is the S still sport mode. I’m confused on that because the car is old
isn't neutral what you should have it in if it has to be towed?
Yea
He said L is used for towing. Dat is if ur towing something like a trailer. He didnt meant wen the car is being towed
@@akupehsluarketatAR didn't think a civic had enough power to tow a trailer, let alone a hitch on it like a truck has.
@@joanna7350 u can tow with anything as long as u stay within the vehicle capabilities. E.g a dirt bike on a trailer
some HRV doesnt have L...
so what to use when going up a parking building?
Better explained than how my parents explained it, thank you so much!
Are the letters on the shifters supposed to light up when the engine is on?I kinda grapple without it at night, actually.
You rock buddy!
Why is the 5th gear (in an automatic) always different?
It's either S, I, 2 or something else.
if u look closely it says LSD lol
How do I find overdrive why u never answered the questions
Lol
S
When on ‘S’ can I drive permanently without shifting it to ‘D’ or cruise the car over 100km/h intermittently on winding roads?
@@daniyal.canada Yeah it would be great if you make video .
So does S make you go faster?
No lol sports mode just tights the steering wheel for sharper turns and what not basically it's for better handling when you're going fast
yeah increases performance
@@illusionizeZero false
@@Somewheresmokinggas true i don’t agree on him sport mode makes your car faster because you are accelerating faster and keeping the revs higher before it change gear
I only use sports mode when I drive up hill.
Thanks
Very nice
You mean the PRNL?
On my car I have a 2 instead of the S. What does that mean ?
Mine too. I was also wondering about this
2nd gear. Basically more responsive pedal more torque but at lower speeds. It is like the principle of a bike. You put it into second on a big hill it puts less strain on your legs but you would put it in higher gear if you were going downhill. That is what D automatically does.
You wouldn't pedal down a hill in 1st gear unless you have godlike flash legs. The same applies to a car because you would blow out the engine.
No the simple fact that they can easily do the research and figure it out themselves is what irritates me🤦🏽♂️ like in my opinion it’s common sense.
Park
Reverse
Neutral
Drive
3rd gear
2nd gear
L or 1st gear
Common sense shit tbh
@@rasta432183 geez relax. He was simply asking a questions. No harm in that
Very interesting
Isn't S - Second while L is low or 1st?
what is the max speed for the L gear?
Press the button
What car is that ?
in my car it have 3-D under thar there is 2 and last is L what is that mean?
Magic L = lowest gear or in some cases gear 1, 2 = second gear then 3 = 3rd gear. For example L is used for towing heavy objects at a constant speed without placing so much stress on the engine, gear 2 and 3 are essential gears at need more rpms to red line which means your car will have low acceleration off the line but will reach higher end speeds
Ricky Coffey does her specific shift gear have a name?
Thank you , very useful
So basically the L is for when ur car have heavy objects?
you mean... the prndl?
Oh I thought R was race mode.
It was reverse

Are all Cars the Same-???
WOW
You come to a red light, you stop ...switch it to N, while your waiting for the green light ???
What about that stupid little button now in New cars that cuts off the engine while one waits at the red light... many people don't like the feeling of your engine being cut off at a red light. They say it a gas saver ???? $
