Gear Selector In An Automatic Car-Driving Lesson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лют 2019
- In this video, I go over a driving lesson on using the gear selector in an automatic car. I talk about the letters beside the gear stick, and how to use it properly. I also talk about what happens when you put the car into each of the common gears (drive, reverse, neutral, park, and low).

Hahaha
It's might have been you , who fell out of his nose
I learned manual transmission and never driven auto....always wondered what all those letters were, thanks for this bro!
P R N D L S 1 2 3 M1 N2 M2 N3 M3 OD
Did you ever consider doing voice acting for animation? Your voice could be a goldmine
Heyyyy everybodyyyyyy

Very helpful. Detailed enough for even a noob like me. Thank you!
Not a noob😂
Thanks, I am familiar with automatic gearbox, but the Low was new for me in a rental car abroad. Since it was a 1.0 liter Mitsubishi Space Star and there were 4 heavy guys inside the car, I used the Low for going up a steep hill

When you switch to Manuel Mode, the car starts to speak spanish on higher rpms.

I have seen automatic cars with something like this: P R N OD D 1, which stand for park, reverse, neutral, overdrive, drive, and first gear. Overdrive works best for gas milage on the freeway at sixty miles per hour, but when speed limits are thirty-five to forty miles per hour and you are travelling from signal light to signal light to signal light, you should use regular drive, instead. If you use regular drive, instead of overdrive on a four speed automatic, you are telling the computer to stay out of fourth gear, therefore reducing that gear hunting that you might experience in city driving situations.
Can I switch between OD, D and 1 while driving? Just bought a really old automatic.
I've always driven stick shift but ever since London Tipton told us about Prndl I wondered what the hell that meant. Now I know, thanks!
I just got a Honda civic with the same gears as you and I'm trying to fin out whether while your moving can you switch from drive to S or L and visa versa without damaging the engine?
Thank you so much brother, this mean a lot to me.. I haven’t drive automatic car before, i just got some one week ago. I put it on R and it moving by it own D and it moving by it own... I was so wandering about it, but now you lemme know that. Thanks once again.
wow, thanks alot, u really taught us very clearly. i drive a manual car so i wanted to how auto cars gear system work.
Thank you. extremely helpful video. In my country, the automatic transmission is very rare so not many people have experience with it.
some post soviet country?
@@JackEacher yes. Not Soviet union but post Soviet bloc to be exact.
@@JackEacher Actually, Various lol. Central, South America even the Continent of Africa, all have gears shifts for the most part. These guys even complain about automatics. I bet they don't know about 1 and 2 gears

Ok so I have a question. I drive a 2013 Mazda 6, and in stoplights I switch to neutral. When I switch to Drive, I press the brake pedal before shifting. Is it at all necessary? Can I switch from neutral to drive without having to press the brake with no damage to my transmission?
One of the best teacher in driving schools you real a good teacher thanks.
This man said let me explain sports mode and said it’ll give you a sporty feel
lmao.... he should have explained what a sporty feel is.
Well he did say it’ll give it a more “dynamic” feel
Thanks you explain very well I was always wondering what the s is for now I know it’s for sport
What I don't get is, why does my car vibrate after I shift to 'D' from 'P' or to 'D' from 'N'. The whole of dashboard and the hood and almost every part would slightly vibrate and the car would be tensed until i've lifted up my foot off of the brake padel and the car begins to move forward.
May I know, what will it do to the car when I press the button for those combination of gears shift that we don't need to press the button? Will that cause some damages to the gear box?
Thank you
Hey. If switching between D and N. Is this harmful to the gearbox?
Its simple, n for night, r for race, and d for day
Daubeny The hard one lmao
In all my 24 years driving experience, I have never driven an automatic. This is very useful to know 👍🏻
When switching from D to S, do I need to press the break?
I‘ve been using L on long declines to engine brake mainly.
The gas pedal is essentially disconnected from the wheel mechanism?
good job
do you have gear selector for manual transmission specially the reverse
Hi guys, please I want to find out when climbing a hill which gear do you have to use and when descending a hill which gear do you use. Thank you 😊🙌💕✨
Same greats while going up and going down.
Moderate incline hill 3. Acute incline 2
Same rule applies while going downhill
This video is very very helpful... I love your videos
Very good video. I have learnt a lot. Continue uploading them.....
Hey Badger nice video, do one on being the best hitman west of the Mississippi.
Every teacher should speak like that with that amount of energy
Thank you so much this was really helpful
THANK YOU SO MUCH. This video was very clear.
Hello lovelyyyy sirrr, how im gonna use the electric parking button and brake hold button? what is eco mode button for?

Hello every change gear selection should i always put on the break ?
Can we shift from D to L while in motion?
Very informative. Thank you.
what about the numbers 1,2,3 and - + sysmbols and the little ball/disc shaped "gear sticks".
Question: My new car got the number 2 and 3 and not the L that is like in your car, so when do I use it besides the D? And will it damage my gearbox if I always use the 2 and 3 gear?
I use L and 2 for when I'm ascending or descending a hill,
And 3 is mostly for towing which I never use...
@@danielcox4398 Thanks for the reply👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@danielcox4398 are these also helpful for winter conditions?
@@triballing i have never driven in winter, where i live it doesnt snow, so i really have no idea
For L would it also work during the snow?
Informative lesson.
does the car also move itself when i put on the S or L gear? Will it be more torque than D? someone pls reply,
im trying to learn how to drive and a car works
mg mg the car does move itself in S, D, and L in a idle. L gear will be more torque than D, for towing purposes. (God forbid u have to tow a small U Haul, ur able to in a more comfortable manor) if u got anymore questions lmk. I’m just a 17 year old who loves cars, and taught myself to drive stick lmao.
Park also does the same thing as neutral since it discontinues the power to the wheel that comes from the engine, it is not wise to state that the gas pedal is disconnected fron the wheels no, but it is wise to state that the power coming from the engine is discontinued. Also that a mode shift stick.
Also that button which allows you to shift to reverse is similar to the manual transmission gearshift tongue which is prominent in some cars like Hyundai and Kia, and when pull that tongue up in a manual transmission, it allows you to shift to reverse, it is very important so that whenever you shift to 1st gear you won't accidentally shift to reverse.
thanks Sir for this lesson
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽Thumbs up great explanation.
thank you so much this was very helpful
Very helpfull some moinor details explained
such a great lesson
thanks for the tutorial
Thanks! You're a great teacher!
What annoys me is, I wanna be able to feel confident that I’m in drive mode. Basically in traffic when I put the car into P, and then to move off, I constantly have to look down and take the gear into D. Cos I feel scared that I’ve passed into another gear. They should make D right at the end of the gear, so you just pull the gear all way back to enter D, without having to look down making sure it’s defo In D mode
You'll get the hang of it.
Only have your car in park when you are parking your car, it's not safe and depending on where you live, might be illegal.
I literally have the same issue and decided to look it up to see if I should take my suv back and get it checked out. Before my suv I had a 2004 mazda 6 which didn't easily move out of gear , so now having this newer car I'm fearful of one days being in traffic and it go out of gear by accidentally getting bumped. Why is it like that?
Thank you so much.. You r the best
which gear should I use when I need to stop, leave the car, open the gate? P or N with Handbreak? In Manual I Select N gear and use handbreak. What is correct way in auto?
leks85 P and handbrakes .. but make sure you have completely stopped before you switch to P .. then use your handbrake.
Either or. Doesn't really matter tbh. Just make sure your handbrake can hold your car in place! 😂
Why do automatic gear have neutral option?
Even though I'm 11, this helps me understand the gears ALOT. Thank you 😄
Can I switch between D; (D); 3; and 2 while driving (fist time I own an older automatic, don't want to break anything)
do u have to put ur foot on brake when changing to Park or Reverse? When to use the brake while changing gear?
Yes..your foot has to be on the brake when changing gear
Oh, it does look kinda easier than manual. Gotta try driving an automatic someday.
do you have to come to a complete stop to shift from D to S?
Daniel Kilrain no you don’t. You can shift from D,S,L on the fly.
What's the meaning of that button on gear lever ( lock) almost button is red colour
Hi. Your car looks really cool. Is it a civic or an accord? And what year?
I need to get me one
I think its honda crv
Thanks! Very helpful..

Don’t you just love 💗 his voice?
Lol.. he kinda sounds like Charlie Day
No, not really
No
If you turn off your can and don’t put it in park, and you have to put it in park after the engine is off; will this do any damage to your transmission.
No. You do have to put it in park or neutral before you can start the car however.
Do you have to be at a complete stop to switch between D, S and L?
Yes
Lmfao I love his "Heyyyyyyyyyyyy, Everybodyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" 🤣🤣
Low is advisable for very uphill w full capacity passengers
Very helpful bro
Can you shout "REV UP YOUR ENGINE!" 😁

Thank you for clarifying not using the button certain gears. I thought my car was acting up.

Is it wrong to press shift anytime when changing gear
In terms of handling the car? Yes. The button is a security function. Eg. you can't put it in reverse or to a park while driving in forward because that would break the gearbox. Using it all the time will make this security function pointless. Well, of course, due to the arrangement of the gears it will not likely that a scenario like this would happen, but you know safety is above all.
some cars have P R N D 1 2 so?`what 1 and 2 means anybody can answer
Hey Sean, 1 and 2 refer to gears in the transmission. In a manual transmission, you have the option to select any gear with the stick shift. With an automatic, a computer determines the proper gear to be in, based off of vehicle speed, load on the engine, RPM, and the percentage of throttle being used. However, say you're driving in snow and want to limit your speed down a hill, but don't want to ride you brakes, you would put the car in 1, for 1st gear (0-15 mph generally) or 2, (15-25 generally). So instead of riding your brakes, you can limit the gear, and thus, how fast the car will go. Hope that helps
Can I know what honda car model is it?
Does S stands for second gear or sports mode? I'm confused..
Sport mode
thx for learning :)
can you elaborate on "sport" gear?
It turns your car into a sports car, engage that gear and it makes it feel like the car has a turbo charger.
I’m afraid to drive a car with an automatic transmission. I never learned to use one. Thanks for the video
It is so much easier than a manual gear, so if you've mastered driving in the manual gear it must be like a game for you.
Kurosaki Ichigo well an automatic car does not roll back like a manual, that’s scary. I’m so use to roll back.
I went from neutral to #2, is this wrong?
Thanks 😊
can you shift from drive to neutral while driving?
Yes you can but it doesn't help anything
@@TheMrxShadowz hehe true. Just asking because children playing sometimes and accidentally kicks thr shift to neutral.
