Even if that bottom-center drawer is 100% borked, you could straight-up remove it, put a OSB or nicer board in there as a floor, and use it as a storage bay. Nice find Clinton!
I had the same situation at a Home Depot. I've been wanting to purchase the smaller version and my wife called me over to one she was looking at and the original price was $450 and do to a very small dent in the back and a small mark on the side they dropped it down to $250. Well the manager walked by the same time, asked if we needed help and informed us of the mark down, and as I said I was just looking he said he would take another $50 off....SOLD!
Back in 1998 I did the same thing with a Husky tool box that wound up being basically the same as a Mac of that era. I did exactly what you did and got it for $120 and when I got it home I called up the hotline number in the drawer for keys and they sent keys for it. Sure enough they were actually some tools inside of it as well. That toolbox still sits in my garage today.
I've put myself in those boots before, and found it's best to take the "W" and get on with my life. Never let "perfect" be the enemy of very, very good.
This also works great the weeks after New Years, when all the holiday gifts get returned and stores have a surplus of open-box items. I once bought open-boxed fridge, washer, and dryer for just the price of the fridge, just by asking, "Would you be willing to offer an additional discount for me to take several of your returned appliances off your floor?" That was at Best Buy.
Never hurts to ask. I was at Lowe’s and a 1x8x10 beautiful piece of red oak had a very wide knot in the middle of the board. I asked the store manager for a discount since the board was unusable for its entire length. I got a S4S $90 board for $5. Got 10% discount of a special order Powermatic dust collector from Home Depot because it had a palm size shallow dent in the filter cage at the cost of a phone call and a discount of $120.
I've heard of this tip in my middle school days. got a good 4-20 dollars off from the "tourist price" about a decade ago. Still an awesome way to remind people that a bit of observation/qc check and a concise friendly speaking manner pays off.
I got a 52" tool box at Home Depot that has a couple of dents and a stuck drawer. After inquiring, yes, it was a floor model and I did get a good discount. I was able to find the problem with the drawer and the dent was in the back so I wasw able to sorta punch it out a bit. So, don't be afraid to ask. The very worse they will say is no, but very often it might be yes.
In Holland, it's a normal thing to ask for a discount on a demo / display model. Also, if the article is damaged, you can ask if they can lower the price. Which seems logical. Verry good you found it out at your local store. Nice workbench 👍
Excellent, great deal Sir, the answer to a great deal is to know what you would happily pay and to be prepared to walk away ! Also, timing is all, like buying a car just when the sales figures are due !
I would contact Husky and tell them you just bought this toolbox, and the drawer is dented really bad. See if they will send you a replacement. The worst they could say is no.
I snagged a sheet of MDF for about 30% off because the corner was mashed off of it. And appliances or tools with visual defects - your "scratch and dents" are usually already discounted. That doesn't stop you from making an offer... It seems like many managers are happy to dump those items cheap to get them off the floor.
You're lucky. I got a similar box delivered to me with one of the wheels tilting, I flipped over and saw 2 out of 4 nuts were missing and the female part missing to hold the nut. I called Home Depot and they told me they could take it back but no replacement since that was the last unit. They offered me $75 off, I said that's a bit cheap for the entire toolbox tilting to the side. My box condition was worse than yours but I kept it anyway and soldered the wheel to the base since I needed the box that week.
yea I got my "silent" air compressor from lowes for just under 60% off cause it was a display model with a dented control panel, its an air compressor who cares if the sheet metal around the guages has a doink in it! Its a good machine, its not "silent" but I can run it in the garage and you can't hear it 1 wall away in the living room. Also got a banging deal on a display model TV and microwave at best buy (not at the same time) like hey this display model has a ding or a scratch, want to cut a deal ... always worth asking!
That’s a pretty nice box! I think personally I would see if I could order a new drawer through Husky and only repair it as a last resort. I could deal with the scratches though for that price. I bought my first bandsaw as a display model when I was 14 or so. Had to order a few replacement parts but it wasn’t a huge cost and still only a fraction of what they knocked off at checkout.
Costco had a 2 piece 42" 10 draw roll around tool box with a 42" 6 draw top chest for $599 regular price. When it went on sale for $499 I bought it. A few months later I see that same tool chest marked down to $399. Deals like these are treasure hunts. Good hunting!
The last time I purchased a heavy duty toolbox from Home Depot that was deeply discounted an employee called and asked if I would accept a new one in the box that I would need to assemble. Hello? Of course not. p.s. - I think they had sold the display unit that I'd already purchased to another person and still had to fill my order.
Probably could have gotten it cheaper but still not a bad deal. I got a close out light for my bathroom, the box was open and damaged but the light was fine. I asked how much off I could get and got a something like $150 light for $60 I think it was.

Wow! You got a KILLER deal on that tool/workbench! Congrats!

legend has it the Home Depot employee was going to offer $200 but heard $400

I do the same thing with damaged gates at the farm supply store. Usually can get a discount and most of the damages are minor.

You got LUCKY normally they won't take anything off if damaged stuff unless it's the last one they have in that store.

Great deal Mr Wood. I hope the repairs are all on video.
I've been thinking about it
My son has a great Husky tool box (graduation gift from his parents!). You can buy parts for it. I’m sure a new drawer would not be that expensive.
Outstanding deal! Good for you! 🙂
Nice pick up. And it does look like an easy fix. All my stuff has dents and scratches that I don’t even notice anymore.
Great job on getting it, thanks for the information. Happy New Year
I've found less big box stores are willing to do a bargain with scratch n dent product but occasionally I do find a smart manager like you did.
Put in a warranty claim for the drawer. Worth a shot.

Sweet deal, man! I'd love to see a video on your toolbox fix
I got the Kobalt equivalent about a year ago at Lowe's for $400 with no dents or scratches.
That’s a pretty nice box! I think personally I would see if I could order a new drawer through Husky and only repair it as a last resort. I could deal with the scratches though for that price.

If it goes on sale within the return window, just bring in the recipt and the will give you the difference.
Cool, Fantastic even. God bless, Happy New Year 🎉
Good for you. It's probably going to have a few scratches and dents after a couple of years use anyway.
Goes to show, it never hurts to ask
If you don’t ask, the answer is always “no”

Call the warranty department and order a new drawer. Probably not very expensive.
Wow great deal...

All goes to show, there's no harm in asking.
Agree, damaged goods and worth the price you offered them. You both scored a win just by asking.
You forgot to mention Bunnings 😂
that'll buff out.... :-)
I got a tool chest for huge discount because they could not find the key. Who has locked there tool chest when you got it home?
Well duh!
I usually have an "accidental" fall in the store and call my own discount on anything I want in the store....🤣

I’d love it if you made a video of how you repair that dent! I have a similar Husky toolbox 🧰.
