This video shows the easy way of apply white silicone on dark surface for beginners . if you use white silicone on white surface then the tape is not necessary. Im using MDF board for video purpose only to show clearly all process of applying silicone.First make sure the surface is free from grease and dust so it can stick properly. The tape can be stick wider to allow for wider silicone line if needed. And need to be removed as quickly as the silicone has been applied then silicone smooth again . The gun cost 3 pounds in b&q but you can use one for 20 if you wish.Thank you for watching
I have done all types of silicone or tube grout for years and it never occurred to me to use painters tape. WHAT A WONDERFUL LITTLE HACK! He is absolutely right. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video. Using tape gives a lot of DIYers that extra bit of confidence to do a good job and get a good result. Just takes a bit of extra time to tape the work area up. Instead of using bare finger to tool the silicone, use one of those silicone tools or wear a latex glove and dip your finger in water mixed with a tiny amount of dishwashing detergent. As per the video, for the perfect caulking line, slowly lift the tape at right angles to the surface and do it before the silicone starts to cure. Cheers from the Land Down Under.
Lots of negative comments from so called trades men. I've just moved into a new flat and am watching a lot of these types of videos to help me learn how to do little jobs im not familiar with. It seems the so called experts are just watching the video to negitively comment. Try doing something positive like making your own video. Nice video, keep up the good work!!
Jamieoo77 ignore them....I’ve done plenty and this tip is worth its weight.....it also stops you overspreading the bead you put on if you run a finger or smoothing tool afterwards to give the final finish.....very easy to overspread and then a pain to remove the waste. This tip takes more time but you get a brill finish. It’s easy for the armchair warriors to complain about anything.
The masking tape is generally not a good approach. The tape causes a little ledge to be created when it is removed. This results in water droplets remaining on that ledge which over time, causes mold to accumulate.
Never thought of using masking tape with silicone, good idea. Considering I hate using silicone even though it is very handy I will certainly try this method next time. Thanx.
Why are people pissed off ? He’s showing people like me how to do something in the most simple way. Good for you if you’ve got all of you lovely tools to play with. I don’t, I just want a fucking silicone joint to look clean, his one did. Thumbs up from me, thank you!
I think this is a very good way, that removes the possibility of wavy edges, no worry. It's like when you want to draw a perfectly straight pencil line, you'd use a ruler, same principle. Very good.
So many experts in the comments lol. Any which way that gets the job done right and the person doing the job feels most comfortable with is the right way for them and the job in hand. Silicon around windows against rustic brick and I used tape, when peeled off I never re-rubbed the silicone, beautiful straight parallel lines every time even when bricks are not perfect along with recessed joints. Tape can be very useful in some situations and the video shows it can be used if required as some people don't know this.
This was helpful to me, so 🙏 Not sure why all the neg comments or why they bothered to post - too much time on their hands if they know it all already 😜 We all have our own methods!
Cut the muzzle a few degrees, hold the gun almost 90 degrees to the surface. You'll apply AND scrape it into a fine shape in one swoop, without using fingers or one of those scrape things.
@@jckdnls9292 Why are you replying to a 4 year old comment, lol? Also, I've been a carpenter for almost a decade now. What I said works, but its just less reliable if you don't have a steady hand.

No need for tape. After you run a nice even bead of silicone dip a piece of sponge in some detergent water and pass it over the joint. You can also use a spray bottle. Then run your finger over the joint. You will get a nice even joint because the silicone will not stick to any surface that has detergent on it.
Try using a silicon spatula. It is much easier, cleaner, no messy fingers, no masking tape necessary and saves time and money. Also healthier to avoid skin contact.
A little tip for you guys... Get a shot glass and put some washing up liquid inside. Not too much - just enough to dip your finger in. Silicon will stick to your finger. If you use some washing up liquid, it will make it a bit smoother. Don't overdo it. Do the first pass with a dry finger, wipe it clean with a paper towel and do the second pass with washing up liquid to make it smoother.
I always apply tape and not to is amateurish, unnecessarily overconfident and asking for trouble. I would add that putting on a rubber glove will help prevent bacteria from forming in the silicon in wet areas or just use a piece of pipe or dowel.
That guy does not know how to apply a silicon bead.I did a lot of this for forty years.I would not have been employed if I had used that method....Masking tape? You're having a laugh.
Should avoid touching silicone with hands as bacteria settles in wet silicone. use silicone rubber finishing tools. sets are cheap!! ans better quicker finish, no taping, no messing around!!
Wiping down caulk with your finger is fine for trim finish base boards etc... for bath / sink use it is not good to wipe down the caulk. the bead will lift once it has been washed or scrubbed over for a couple of months; the bead needs body to last and properly with no lift and protect from water infiltration. It might look better to wipe down but you're not actually applying it properly and maximizing its efficiency.
Good advice about using masking tape. An idiot below thinks it's not necessary but obviously he doesn't know that silicone eventually discolors and shows a straight line if tape was used but an unprofessional wavy line if silicone is spread with your finger or other device.
you can get silicone sealing tools which work brilliantly on most surfaces especially good for tiles and bath and leaves a perfect straight line even for newbies.
tape and fingers? slapdash plumber technique from the '80s smudges and smears, and not only time consuming, but waste of money for the tape. New Age Method: (no tape) apply silicone to joint, spray with mist of water/metho (10-1 clear) and wipe off using ice cream stick (if end radius is agreeable) cleaning stick frequently by wiping off on a bit of newspaper. I learned this skill from professional glaziers installing frameless showerscreens in a 6 star hotel. Beats the tape and smear deal hands down. Good luck.
Yeah, sure. For a plumber who does it frequently. For most people who do it once a year or 2, tape is the best method along with a proper scraper, washing up liquid, and lots of paper kitchen towels to wipe off the huge excess from the scraper. Tape, paper, washing up liquid, and silicon are all wasted, but still cheaper than getting a plumber to do it. Two years ago, I had one asking for £80 + VAT to redo the bath seal that he damaged. I told him I will get my own plumber. I did it for around £4.
You are right. First time I saw lots of ice cream sticks on a building site I thought these guys are hooked on ice creams! Then. I saw what the tiler did with them! Learn something every day👍
You arrogant professionals! Im a woman with no experience using a caulking gun and caulk. Because i have to do some tasks myself to save money ( my sister hired a guy to caulk around her tube for a whopping $200! ) I tried to do some caulking myself and It looked terrible! When I used the masking tape method, it looked great. Ive done this around several areas and the results are better than my sister's $200 job. So you handyman types/professionals just shut up. dont use silicone in areas that will constantly get wet. in spite of all the claims, silicone wont stand up over time. even if you've cleaned the tile and tub rim with acetone. use a butyl based caulk instead. it is the only thing that can stand up to constant temp changes, expansion, and water. its what is used to seal windows and around doors etc. in hi rises or any high traffic or wet commercial locations. silicone is way overrated unfortunately, and many have the impression it is the be-all-end-all of caulks. on your next project use butyl, it cost more, is messy as hell, (that's where the masking tape trick is realy handy), but will last a very very long time. -message from one of those "arrogant professionals ;-D
Exactly the method I used on my shower enclosure, past results poor, this time near perfect, endorsed. BTW, I have an idea that the licked finger used to smooth the silicon may introduce bacteria which causes mould to develop, just a thought.
only use silicone if you never intend to paint that bead. If you want to actually paint over the caulk use siliconized latex caulk. 10 years in a paint store I have seen it more than once when a home owner or even contractor uses silicone then comes in and complains that the paint peels or cracks off.
Any tradesman who applied silicon like that on a project I was running would be removed from site. When he cuts the top of the sealant tube he cuts towards his hand too! What a nutter!
The best way to apply silicone is to tape it but don't finger it after as you need to keep a small lip on the edge , if you feather to nothing the edge will lift and and mould will grow,if you don't think so just rub the feathered edge and it will lift but don't with tape method.
Problem with masking tape is that they bend when sticking so the line is not straight. Is there a better quality masking tape that is rigid so it is harder to bend?
This is not the way to caulk a joint. using tape is fine but there are a few steps that can be eliminated. first, a person should not use their fingers to tool the caulking. if the gun is held correctly and pushed toward the silicone bead, tolling can be eliminated. Also, if an individual does this work frequently, tape is not required if the nozzle is pushed towards the bead rather than away from the bead. Also, the nozzle should be cut straight, not at a 45 degree angle as most people claim to do which is not the right way to cut the nozzle if good technics are used.
soooo many keyboard warriors here, strange that so called professionals are watching this video.. its obviously aimed at the diy / handyman.. if your going to be that negative, make a video yourself and post it on here.. also, had a so called professional do some work recently, years of experience, and he did just like the video! there are many ways to do a job, he is showing just one way..
Never used this method, I use small specialised tools. Silicon is a seal so you need plenty to do the job and a sharp edge joint to the surface. It is a skill to learn, takes time. Never use lick to wet fingers, this introduces bacteria.
After applying the silicone spray over it with glass cleaner that contains NO ammonia ,also keep whatever you use to smooth the bead with wet with the cleaner also. The window cleaner will dry up and therefore no need to wipe the surface.
Need to take a glazing class. If my boss saw me running a bead of silicone like that I wouldn’t have a job. First of all you need to tool it to make sure you get all the air bubbles out or your seal will fail and using tape you must tool the silicone/caulking off the tape so that the edges of tape are visible otherwise when you go to pull the tape off you don’t leave a lipped edge of caulking on your material or pull the caulking up with the tape.
carbonsiliconnn That’s what I think as well. It might be ok for a diy enthusiast but for a tradesman is time consuming. Usually you use silicone to seal against water and in showers you have thermal movement, even if is small, in the end will have a peeled seal and that needs a wider bead. At least 5 mm, depending on the texture of the tile.
This is incorrect. You leave a concave bead that is very shallow and will lift off at the edge. You should use the special tool that produces a convex profile. Much stronger. Also no need for tape as the tool removes any excess
Gabriel Simek A good mastic man will do a straight line on every surface. Masking tape will always make a rough edge and you must level it after. Stick is the best.
Only the very inexperienced would bother with this masking tape process. If I were to recommend any method as better it would be to use a spray of soapy water over the freshly applied silicone, then a wet finger wiped along the join before wiping with a wet rag with pressure to clean the sides of the joint. You can get your work as good as this example, every time
The video doesn't show the correct method and neither is a finger the correct method - that will produce a concave bead that is very weak, what you need is a silicone shaping tool that is good quality that produces a convex bead of silicone
I thought that also when I saw him do that, but on reflection He did a controlled round action and your thumb is surprisingly good at allowing a very sharp blade to rest on it as a stop so long as you know what you are doing and don't actually use a sliding motion across your thumb which could easily cut it :)
I'm not a pro, but have done a bit of this, the vid is ok for beginners. However the only comment I would make is that every tube of silicon I have used says NOT to use your finger as a smoothing tool, silicon is toxic.
to small a bead,no allowance for movement, good joints need good silicone and there is only one mastic gun, thats a cox powerflow and taping is a waste of time and effort
When the tape is removed, it leaves a slight ridge. If you put a shot of 'Fish Eye Remover on the end of the finger, it won't pull or mess up the silicone. His technique works and saves time.
Roger Dickinson It sure does, and it accomplishes the same results but with a much more low profile and uniform finish. Running the finger over it as the second stage prevents that ridge that water can collect on and eventually be a problem. Hell, I don't do this stuff for a living, I just needed to re do the seal around my upstairs bathtub, I used a caulking gun like that in my last house and I made a hell of a mess. This time it was a totally different result. I made the gap between the tape wider and filled the tub with water before I applied the silicone. I only did that because I had watched other you tube videos that recommended that.
Even after having been in the Cabinet business all my life, there is always something to be learned that can be modified to your own personal application. Lotsa good info here.
What a load of nonsense.....Damn!..... I thought I was going to learn something new?......No, I didn't.....What about showing wetting your finger tip before wiping off.......Wiping it with turps..?......White spirit.........Or even clean the surface before use.........Cutting the nozzle at an angle makes a great deal of difference.......I have many more little tips on silicone use, and I speak English.
hi i was after advice please..i want to replace my bathroom extractor fan its currently a 12v fan.i have taken the cover off the old fan and there are two wires in the terminal block. The new fan takes 3 wires live, switched live and neutral. the older fan used to come on with the light switch. also in the bathroom on the ceiling near the wall fan is a 3 pole swith fan isolator. My light pull switch has 2 cables going into common, brown and red. and the 2way has a blue and black Many thanks
the 3 pole fan isolator has 3 wires on the supply side . you need to run new cable 3 core & earth from load side of the isolator to the new fan or please check my video : ua-cam.com/video/YKg0JPHwi-I/v-deo.html
The first thing is to buy good quality silicone not cheap rubbish like this from screwfix as when applied to a plastic bath it will come away from the bath after a while.
you are not so experience using silicone gun. most people do not need the blue tape. just aim the gun at a 45 degree to the contact point and squeeze at the same time slide the silicone tube backwards. i never need the tape for the last 19 years of work. no mess at all.
Obviously, this video is not meant to show-off his expertise - which would be totally useless. This is a How-To video for inexperienced people. I've used this technique and I've got to say, it saves leaving a huge mess for people who are not as good as you.
James Darnell Something to consider: One day me and a friend were watching the news and some Chinese guy was being interviewed and he spoke English, not so good, but understandable. My buddy started talking shit about this guy's English. In response, I said "Pretty sure his English is way better than my Cantonese.". My buddy thought about it for a second, laughed and said "Good point! Never thought of it that way, but yeah, good point.".

Agree - a concave bead is not the way to do it, convex is stronger and longer lasting and the finger is a no no.
very cool..thanks !
none of these "tradesmen" guiding tutorials are real professionals
the main point is to use colour matching silicone. Secondly, masking tape is used only if is rough or uneven surfaces to make straight line
Gabriel Simek
A good mastic man will do a straight line on every surface.
Steven Campbell haha only the very inexperienced would spray or use anything wet on mdf
Is this a wind up
First rule of carpentry: NEVER EVER CUT TOWARDS YOURSELF!
"Always cut towards your buddy so you don't get bloody"
Never cut towards your thumb; Always cut towards you chum; You can always get another chum!
If this true, explain a draw knife, an adz. The first rule about rules is that there is never never ever a rule that is never never ever wrong.
I thought that also when I saw him do that, but on reflection He did a controlled round action and your thumb is surprisingly good at allowing a very sharp blade to rest on it as a stop so long as you know what you are doing and don't actually use a sliding motion across your thumb which could easily cut it :)

I liked your video! Thank you!
Just use a profiler...it's neater and far quicker
No, nyet, nine, non, you don't need tape. A steady hand, no hangover and confidence will do the job. Been there, done it.
Well,I don't have a steady hand,I'm not drunk or hungover, the tape method worked for me.been there ,done that.
If the first 5/6 of you know so much, post it up.
You did not show how to work with gaps between wall and trim.
Beautiful
I'm not a pro, but have done a bit of this, the vid is ok for beginners. However the only comment I would make is that every tube of silicon I have used says NOT to use your finger as a smoothing tool, silicon is toxic.
to small a bead,no allowance for movement, good joints need good silicone and there is only one mastic gun, thats a cox powerflow and taping is a waste of time and effort
Harmonica lessons
People just get a silicone rubber edge.. any pound shop or tile shop..
Tom Tomos yes, he must of forgotten after buying the mastic gun from the pound shop.

How to make. Dr e
thats cause people are lazy
After all that effort of applying the tape to keep your gap you went and ran your fingers across after removing the tape 😓
It is easier..
My light pull switch has 2 cables going into common, brown and red. and the 2way has a blue and black Many thanks
the 3 pole fan isolator has 3 wires on the supply side . you need to run new cable 3 core & earth from load side of the isolator to the new fan or please check my video : ua-cam.com/video/YKg0JPHwi-I/v-deo.html

you are joking... right?
All you had to do is cut a smaller hole in the tube should have done the same thing
i dropped some silicone on top of the sink and can't take it off. someone help please.
meth or white spirts
nice video
Try using a foaming glass cleaner run the bead and spray glass cleaner over it and wipe it off with your finger simple trick and works amazing
Nice
Just tube it off with fairy washing up liquid and water easy and lot quicker no tape needed
How to do a nearly perfect silicone line How to apply nearly perfect silicone finish
nice one!
Diy silicone way to do is wood stick and soapy water
Verygood
In German we called this " Murks" ;-)
Nothing new here. Actually you never run your finger after you remove the tape.
Cant believe nobody uses the 1/4 paint brush and 2 chisel method!.
Don't be silly, a hand trowel is better....
I just hate it when some people in this day and age say mastic. Grrrr. Some of my friends use silicone and still call it mastic. Lol
very many ways to skin the cat ;)
@firoz kamarudin
Do I use masking tape first firoz?
I'm a pro painter and you do not need masking tape
I'm not a pro painter and I do need masking tape
INSPECTOR FROST Painting isn't a proper trade. If you can piss you can paint.
your an idiot. hows the labouring going.
That's because you are a pro, what are your plant propagation skills like.
INSPECTOR FROST i am an electrician....people do labouring for me thanks.
Like most things practice makes perfect
Leon Wang speak engrish?
James Darnell
Something to consider: One day me and a friend were watching the news and some Chinese guy was being interviewed and he spoke English, not so good, but understandable. My buddy started talking shit about this guy's English. In response, I said "Pretty sure his English is way better than my Cantonese.". My buddy thought about it for a second, laughed and said "Good point! Never thought of it that way, but yeah, good point.".
Really uncalled for and disrespectful comment James Darnell.
Think about what you said and if you don’t think it’s wrong, then you are an idiot.
