  • TEACHER DEMO
    This song was composed by Leonard Cohen, a Canadian singer, and first released in 1984 on his album "Various Positions". Since then it has been recorded and performed by many different artists for concerts, talent shows, television, and movies (notably "Shrek" 2001). There are many different verses to this song and performers will often select the ones that are most appropriate for their venue.
    This piano arrangement is by Philip Keveren. It starts in the Key of C and then changes to the key of Ab for the last 1 1/2 pages. (4 pages total). I preferred it without the staccato in measures 20, 42, 46, 54, 80, and 88. It is important to emphasize the left hand melody in measures 30-42. --Norma

    Awesome! Your brain must be quite talented to switch the melody from right to left hand and back. I bet you can even pat your head, rub your stomach, and walk, all at the same time. Great job here! Love this song and this version.

      Thank you! I'll have to see if I can pat my head, rub my stomach and walk at the same time. :) The piano melody emphasis switching from right to left and back again does take practice. It's called "independence of the hands" when you can get one hand to play louder than the other. They tend to like to work together at the same volume. Thank you for listening and taking the time to comment! Norma

      Thank you! Thanks to years of practice, the amount of time required to learn an intermediate song is quite minimal, but I still have to put in a lot of time for the advanced music that I play. Norma

      Excellent points Miss Norma.
      The college professors that I have seen play early advanced music immediately by SIGHT, would you say they have had at least 10 years
      of learning and development to achieve that feat?
      The ole
      “10,000 hours”

    • @92pianokeys40
      @92pianokeys40  10 місяців тому +1

      If they are college professors, they definitely have had at least 10 years of time at the piano. The "10,000 hour" philosophy with regards to piano could be less or more depending tremendously on the individual. Sight reading is a skill in itself and if you truly focus on that by spending a lot of time constantly reading new music, you can develop it more quickly. But yes, learning to play the piano takes a lot of hours and those who achieve the virtuoso level are exceedingly worthy of respect for their perseverance at their craft. --Norma

    Thank you so much for posting this and linking to the sheet music (although the link failed - I still found it). I tried to find a simplified arrangement of this some time ago and failed, but came across this when I found your excellent performance of Alfred's All-in One Adult Piano Chiapanecas and then this, which I'll save like a too-small pair of pants before a diet. I'm 67 and have been playing for less than a year on my own.

      Thank you for telling me about the link. I corrected it. If you are looking for simplified arrangements of any other songs, I usually check musicnotes.com and sheetmusicplus.com. They both have an enormous selection of music. And good for you pursuing the piano at 67. You are in very good company. I have several students in their 60's and 70's. Some are resuming after a 40-50 year gap and others are beginners. Also, if you want an easier arrangement of Hallelujah, I have an "early-intermediate" one on my channel as well. Here's the link for that one: ua-cam.com/video/aKpPtveTMgo/v-deo.html --Norma

      @@92pianokeys40 Oh, thank you so much! I know I'm in over my head with this one. Not hopelessly so, but a stepping stone would be great. I like the way you've labelled your demos with levels, so I don't even look at too-advances videos. Life is short (really!) I'm sticking with the Alfred's book, a year of about two hours a day and I'm still 18 pieces from the end of Book One. Your demo of Alfred's Chiapanecas helped me with the tempo. - Lynn
