Mendelssohn Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, Op. 35 No. 1

- Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues are a blend of Baroque and Romantic styles, and reveal Mendelssohn's great admiration of Johann Sebastian Bach. Although the set of six preludes and fugues were published in 1837, the fugue of this pair was written in 1827, at the deathbed of Mendelssohn's friend Hanstein. Although Mendelssohn did not dedicate this piece to Hanstein, it is likely that his friend's death was in his mind when he wrote the fugue. It opens in a very somber mood, soon becoming intensely angry. After a long accelerando and an outbreak of octaves, Mendelssohn breaks temporarily from the fugue to enter into a glorious chorale. The themes of the chorale are actually taken from several Christian hymns, including A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, written by Martin Luther. The piece closes softly with the original themes. Mendelssohn's emotions show through in his writing, and as a Christian, he could take comfort in his belief that he would see his friend again in heaven. This performance is by Grant Smith.

I love this piece. It's the perfect place of intersection between the Romantic and the Baroque.
@Mathews196 Hello!
Hey dude!
no way its beethoven im your biggest fan
whens the new symphony dropping
An underrated gem, without a doubt! Mendelssohn's love for Baroque music and the cerebral architecture of the fugue had a great impact into the ever growing eclecticism of the romantic period.
Ooh, nice. I wasn't expecting the fugue to get so fast and exciting towards the end. The arpeggios in the prelude were also very cool. All around very enjoyable piece. :-)
Can you imagine how long it would be if it hadn't?
A very elegant rendition.
Hell... add this to the list of my all-time favourites!
send us your list BaileyRob !
Send it

@Blaze Taylor i would suggest Flixzone. Just google for it =)
Fantástica la combinación de los estilos, me encanta que además de ser muy virtuoso es bellísimo ❤
Magnificent, thank's so much 😌❤️
Bravo!!★☆★☆
Very good.
Most underrated composer
Also one of the greatest composers
The four fantastics: Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Mendelssohn. All underrated.
@@kerencanelo8580 I disagree that Chopin is underrated. Every pianist I know has superlative respect for him and he is widely regarded as the greatest composer of solo piano work.
I personally find Liszt to be OVERrated
Schuman isn't worth the time to listen to
My list of underrated:
Mendelssohn
Brahms
Scriabin
Belanger
Overrated:
Liszt
Vivaldi
Mozart
Practically every musician since electricity was invented
@@Itemtotem Brahms underrated? Brahms is so up in the rating of this world. Yes, Chopin is so loved and blablabla... But they don t admit was better than Mozart or Beethoven, because no orchestal works... Pitty. I have Chopin as the best composer of all time, that's why i say, underrated. Liszt, i always hated him... Until i listen to his minor popular works, that are awesome and profounds like magma. Schumann, i always hated him. Until the day i listen carefully to his music, then... I simply felt and flew in an anazing new world, made for me. Scriabin, i always hated him, i still do... I love his Extasy and Promotheus but the other... So false. I agree with you, that electricity era of music is a shit. Mozart, i always underrated him... But now my cat is called Amadeus.
@@kerencanelo8580 surprisingly I find Bach to be underrated. Yes he is the best, but that still doesn't do him justice. Studying his work reveals far more than music.
Mozart is great for sure but why does he get such praise? His music is perfect and the only music that improves IQ? Perfect because his only REMAINING manuscripts have no corrections? What's the musical criteria for increasing IQ? Is it form? Counterpoint? Must it be inspirational? Then certainly Bach's music improves IQ and others as well.
Brahms is one of the three B's but that in no way credits him duly. Brahms is more creative and unique than Beethoven, and far more graceful. Brahms was more inventive than Mozart because all M did was the same shit everyone else did only better. The romantic era is one of the most profound musical periods because they abandoned the strictures and regulations of composition. They killed the rules and rewrote them.
Well, Chopin, Mendelssohn, and Brahms did.
I can't pick a favorite but in my opinion the most creative, brilliant, inventive, technical, beautiful, memorable, moving music that I have heard has been written by Bach and Chopin
Mendelssohn is not underrated. I would say all these composers are not underrated, what is underrated is some of their works, like this piece.
Tremenda esa fuga 🔥🔥
Immortal piece of music. A total runaway train on the fuge on this performance.
That choral section sounds like A Mighty Fortress is Our God by Martin Luther wrote in c 1529. I wonder if that's where Mendelssohn got his inspiration from. We do know he loves hymns very much.
It is from mighty fortress is our god by Martin Luther.
It is indeed Ein Feste Burg ist Unser Gott. Luther was inspired by the first verse of Psalm 46 . Mendelssohn also composed the youthful Reformation Symphony which ends with the same hymn tune
Licenciate level
The fugue is a classic
also Prélude
1:58
I remember long time ago this set had play very well Anny Fisher, great Hungarian Pianist's...much more interesting & correctly ❤❤!❤❤❤
What is this level?
the performance is from the Earth plane level, but the composition is from the abstract mental plane level
It's very advanced. Probably the hardest level would be my guess.
@@nadiaboulanger9323 Yes, it is very advanced, but not highest level i think, if we talk about level of technique. On the other side, fugue (generally) requires high level of musicality, it is not easy to play it correctly.
@@jachymspacek7562 I suppose you're right, but I was thinking of those places that grade repertoire by level, like RCM and ABRSM. And just guessing as I said.
I practice slow emotions
Too far for me in this speech
Your very indeed ❤
I really want a damn disliker to explain me the reason didn' t like...
Et lorsque Felix remonta au ciel, Jean-Sébastien vint chaudement l'embrasser...
J remember this prélude no very difficult to play wirh five years 🎹 ( one of my exam ) very good exercice less interesting to listrn for me
i'm hearing too much right hand
Too fast!
I agree!
No ! It's the tempo
Waaay too fast for me!!!
Hello
Maybe you're not used to hear it played fast
The tempo is written ( allegri con fuoco)
What does Allegro con Fuoco mean in music ?
In music , allegro con fuoco indicates that something should be performed at a quick pace and with passion and energy .
She played it ( allegro con fuoco) ... we cannot deny her passion , energy and skill 😁👍🏼
No use sharing that lousy performance..
I'm working on mine. @ll upload it when I'm done.
This performance sucks...
Let's hear yours, then.
