Mads, you splashed. I was only this elated when my first child was born. Wish you many many thousands of hours of happy and safe sailing in distant, faraway, and exotic lands.
Dude! She floats! Awesome. We've all waited years for this. None more enthusiastically than you. Congratulations on the blood, sweat and tears you have expended to get here paying off.
Congratulations! Nobody has earned their sailing more than you have! Thanks for sharing every step with us. Looking forward to seeing you enjoy the fruits of your labor!
I had to stop the video to say how brilliant Mads is to the bend the hole saw slightly to get a bigger hole. I wish I had thought of that a few months ago when I faced the same situation.
I have started watching all the videos from the start on your channel and to see Obelix show up in a new video was funny to me since I have been watching about 100 videos so far on her. It is also really cool to see how far you have come on your youtube channel. Your English sounds so much more conversational, the camera work has improved, and editing is better. I can't wait to see you enjoying Athena out on the water.
Congratulations you have built a masterpiece of sail craft so far. When you get the trim done she will be well built and beautiful. You deserve a well earned pat on the back. Great job MADDS
It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long... but then again, I think back and am amazed how much work you’ve done -and how much I’ve learned as a result of it all. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. Congrats on getting her back in the water!!!
man, that was so satisfying watching Athena go back in the water I an going to watch it again . . . and again - much more fun working on the boat when she is floating I think
I must say I like the look of Athena in the water before the mast and safety rail. With the shape of the hard bimini it looks like a 70's sci fi space fighter getting ready to do battle with the Cylons. :D
You must be so pleased. She a beauty in her natural element. Best looking warrior , ever. Small steps complete long journeys. A million small steps. Will get you across town. You're new commute though arduous, will pay dividends in completing your journey. Keep it up, you're doing great.
Long time watcher, first time commenter. Just wanted to say congratulations!!! And to say thank you. It is my great pleasure to sit down with my dinner each Sunday night and watch you make progress. I have learned a lot. It's especially been enjoyable over the last 8+ months since I am unable to get to my own boat during lockdown. Please keep up the great work, both on the boat and on the videos. Congratulations!
Congratulation on the splash .For the vinyl use steam NO heat gun to remove the wrinkles . For the plywood you could wet them and screw them in place so they will keep the radius shape until they dry. Make sure you glue the vinyl with the plywood bend into the roof shape to avoid sagging. Used neoprene contact cement for the glue.
Congratulations Mads on a momentous week in your journey. I hope you found a moment to reflect on the last four years, it has been a joy to follow you on all of it. When you write Zen and the art of boat renovation it will be a best seller I am sure. If I ever find myself in the same port as you I look forward to putting a beer in your hand.
Hi ,MADS glad to see Athena back in the water .All pvc should be rolled around a tube and never folded . Great job you have done and roll on the next video .Thanks for sharing your adventure .
Somehow I couldn't see it as much at the workshop but sitting in the slings over the water made me realize that you have done an amazing job on the exterior of that boat. Wow that paint looks good very nice job.
Congratulations Mads! This has been so much fun to watch.........the work has been exceptional, well, perfect. Great witty host, this has been a real joy seeing this second boat get into the water........
Thank you Mads for the new video. Good to see Athena back in the water. I think you need to revise your intro to "After 4 and 1/2 years I have built a new boat based on a boat pattern I purchased." Except for the raw hull and the mast, Athena is pretty much a unique custom boat. As mentioned below you may be able to warm the faux leather with a hot hair dryer and stretch it to get rid of the creases or you may be able to use a steam iron over a towel to iron the creases out. Take care and stay well.
Excellent work getting Athena back into the wet stuff. Glad that it went off without incident. Though after watching you work on Athena from the start I would expect no less. You're doing great. I look forward to seeing the interior come together and match the excellent work you have done on the exterior.
@@AlfOfAllTrades You're right but it's doable. See more here : sacotin.com/tuto-repasser-du-simili-cuir/ Sorry it's in french but it roughly says use iron without steam at low temperature, iron the back of the fake leather and place a piece of fabric between the iron and the fake leather. test it before on a piece you accept to sacrifice ! Our skilled worker is more than capable to handle this. Of course, i don't want to be accountable for any damage ;-)
Glad this wasn’t the whole emotional drama that most people make it into, very professional as always - Not to detract from milestone that it clearly is.
Very cool event splashing the boat. I remember thinking you were lucky to survive the journey from Scotland to Denmark because the boat was in such poor condition. Now you and all of us can rest easy. Athena is solid as the USS Constitution, "Old Iron Sides."
Been watching every week for months. Enjoying every video of the boat. I'm excited for you to see that day where you was able to splash the boat. I'll be watching every week until you can leave the dock. And of course I'll be there for your voyage, keep pushing forward.
Congrats on the splash! Like you, I put my boat in the water this week for the first time (after 9 years of building) and it was an insane feeling seeing everything come together and work as designed. I'm sure you had the same feeling as you checked the hull for water and realized that decisions you made during the rebuild process have indeed paid off! I look forward to see what else you do with Athena.
Congratulations on the successful splashing of Athena. You should be proud of all your hard work and the finish line is in sight..... A lot closer than when you decided to replace the deck core! :-) Having her close to "home" should make for even faster progress. Smile brother, it's all good! Cheers!
Wow!!!, after 4 years back to the water. For four years I'm following you every Sunday watching the fixing and improvement of Athena, now another step is starting, Thank you
OK Mads the hinge on the inlet was not to your high standards but your adjustment to the hole saw was acceptable!! Love it and well done on the "Splash".
I’ve been watching since you bought Athena. Congrats on splashing. I can’t imagine how rewarding it must feel. Can’t wait to see how you finish the vessel.
Not Compton but China!!! Ok Mads how do you have such a great American sense of humor? Did you live in America or grew up with friends from America. Love your sense if humor!!👍👍👍 Don't sell yourself short, 4.5 years working on Athena, now in the water and no leaks!!! 👏👏👏👏👏. You rock!
Congratulations on this milestone, Mads! Please do something to protect your island/fridge top when using it as a workstation, we really don’t want to see you have to replace it and you got awfully close today .... 👍
Athena appears to be a pristine white! And it looks great! I like the windshield on Athena a lot! I have an 8" deep bulwark around the cockpit and it has two vents in it for venting the sail locker. I hinged one and run my shore power cable through it down into the sail locker for weather and people protection. The cable is actually on a spool from which it is unwound out through the vent to shore power. I have done the same in the bow for running the cable into the anchor locker. I've been tied up to the city docks in Baltimore before when someone came during the night and removed my plug and dropped it into the water!
Well done on returning Athena to her natural element. I actually applauded the occasion and even raised a glass of my finest to you and your ladies future upon this marvelous boat. "an' may y'always 'ave th' wind at y'back"... oh.. by the way... that is the first time I've ever seen you seemingly drill into Athena without apparent concern for whether or not the hole will be of a suffficent diameter, or the core is going to be breached and as far as I can tell... No sealant... anywhere. I hope that in the end you're not going to start cutting corners.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! but NO-WAY has it been 4 !/2 years with Athena. We've been watching since the beginning of Obelix and that was only . . . . well. . . ..damn, it's really been that long? You've (and Jokull) have been a first rate source of entertainment for a long, long time now and we're almost sad to see your re-fit coming to an end, however, we're looking forward to the next installment with Ava and some actual sailing too. Please give Jokull a treat from Jim and Sly and see if you can't fit a couple of minutes of him in a video soon. Once again, Congratulations, you should be proud of what you've accomplished and the job that you did. You built a completely new boat using only a small core sliver of the old hull as a mold.
Congratulations 🍾🎊🎉. We can’t imagine 4 years after our 1.5 years of being hauled out. Thank you so much for such great content and showing us how it’s done!
Very pleased for you Mads. It has been a long journey. I have been watching practically since day 1. On that deadline you gave yourself, 2 points from a senior Software Architect. Goals are excellent, but getting it done right has always been your priority. I suggest that the time frame is a secondary goal, despite the obvious if unstated reasons for time pressure. The price of 1 ticket to America more or less is not that significant, where as getting your life and boat sorted out right is significant. Similar comment on selling the little boat. I have had enough bosses over the years who were willng to sacrifice quality and the power of the end product in the market in order to meet some artificial meaningless deadlines. Personal life works the same way. I was counting on being healthy for a long time, but prioritized adventure and doing important stuff for me. I didnt get to do even a fraction of my life goals, mostly due to other people, but priorities always go to the important stuff. Always consider your goals in terms of total and essential value. I think you eventually get to that point anyway, I am just interested in reducing or eliminating the stress of those decisions. Every case of that will be different and focus will shift, but it feels great to know you always focused on the most important stuff. I am currently living in 'assisted care' in a home. It is a 'pre-nursing home'. I have advanced type 2 diabetes and most of the legendary advanced symptoms are beginning to show, or are full blown. I will spare you the details save to say controlling my blood sugars has been nearly impossible and I have been living with it for going on 30 years. And even now, my main focus is on doing good, helping others, and living a kind hearted excellent life. You have allowed me to live a little bit in a dream I had myself for many years. Now I walk with a walker, and dont have the reflexes for even simple boat life. No strength to run lines or stand a watch. But I still get out Chapman every now and then, or look at a NOAA chart. Sorry for the long post, but it seemed like splash day was a good time for me to share just a little. Keep up the awesome spiffiness.
So proud of your accomplishments! Makes my 2.5 year refit small on my Cape Dory. Love that you have it conveniently located from your other sailboat. I like the way you evaluate parts and equipment.
Congratulations on splashing Athena from the "North Coast" (Lake Erie just a few miles west of Tartan shipwrights). Being an aircraft pilot, I like the suggestions of red LED's for night vision and the white slats for the headliner which would facilitate a more secure, removable, and mechanical, connection to the ceiling.

Yeaaaaa Mads....Nice to see Athena back in the water after all these years.....Congrats....What a great journey so far....Looking forward to the rest.

Hey Mads, just wanted to be the 300th person to suggest using heat on the fake leather.👍
a clothes ironing-the-wrinkles-out machine, called an "iron" is built to remove wrinkles in fabric.
@@UUBrahman An iron gets warm enough to melt fake leather. Extreme caution advised.
