Family are those who come looking for you when you're lost and feel alone, helping you through your problems and accepting you for who you are. Hugo's parents knew they were taking in an unusual child (a predator) from the beginning and yet didn't ask him to be anything other than who he was. And Hugo is a good child. He doesn't have to be like a traditional predator. He just has to be himself.
@@Silber6154 In a way, you're right. Culture and heritage is a beautiful thing, but tradition can also restrain you. It's important to know your roots, while also deciding for yourself who you are.
I think you got it a little twisted... Maybe unintentional. But it basically says we're not defined by blood relations, and that where we've been and who we've been with help shape us into ourselves. Humans take a lot from people around them. I think saying there's something "inside us" that defines who we are goes against the story that tells us about the influence the parents had on the child.
@@gradient5319 The phenomenon you're trying to describe is the age old debate over Nature vs Nurture. The circumstances of how one is raised are, quite often, far more impactful than those of the expectations surrounding where the person came from. And you've also got the epic quote "The circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant, it is what one does with the gift of life that makes us who we are."
@@renthegigglefox Yes, that's exactly it. This short film brings up nature vs nurture in a very obvious way, and taking that into consideration, the main comment mentions "actions and characters inside" which could be interpreted as "someone's nature" which is exactly what the short's story seems to go against.
I love when Hugo realizes he can use his predatory instincts to protect rather than harm (growling at the owl to protect the mouse). It's a beautiful way to show how nature and nurture can combine to create a incredible harmony. Also as someone who was adopted, THIS HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES! Blood may be thicker but water is sweeter! Family is those who love you an accept you for who you are! 10/10 animation and story!
Fun fact! The phrase "blood is thicker than water" is actually a shortened version of "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb", which means that the shortened version has the opposite meaning from the original.
@LadybugsOpin so that interpretation is a fantastic one-- more poetic and true to life-- but it is actually newer than the original which came from the 12th century and did in fact mean to say blood relations were stronger. Not that it makes the phrase "blood is thicker than water" true at all
The worst pain is having family and having lost it out of fear. The greatest joy is family that loves even if your different. And still feels you in their heart.
When the little fox used his strength and fearsomeness not to hurt, but to protect - that made me shed a tear. Such an important lesson, and too few learn it. And the reuniting with his family in the end - it's amazing. That hit all the right stings of my soul.
Love a wholesome adoptive family. Also Hugo lashing out when he's scared reminds me of how I get during panic attacks and autistic meltdowns. My biggest fear is lashing out and harming someone. I love that his parents realized they needed to not push and tried to adapt to make Hugo more comfortable. It's so sweet
Are we not gonna talk about how the kids literally witnessed a fox kill a goose (though both of those where more animalistic and not civilized like him and his parents) just minutes before and biting his dad's neck was more a trauma response because they kept coming closer to comfort him (there wasn't any communication about what he saw) than predator instincts?
Well, ofcorse. Hugo couldn't hurt a fly, but he doesn't know that. You could also discuss weather or not his parents knew it was fear and they crossed a boundry or if they thought it was his hunting instincts.
This cartoon made me go back to my childhood. Something dear, as if he returned back to native Yeisk on the seashore. The cartoon is very kind😊. I almost cried after it
Blood isn’t everything when it comes to family, love and loyalty is. Hugo’s parent accepted and loved him for who he was on the inside, not not the outside.
This is astonishing, immensely beautiful and a true depiction of what a family is meant to be, not only determined by blood but by love and care, an unbreakable bond and sentiment among those who love you no matter what 💖💖💖
Well, however, I'm very confused, really. So much very confused...: Why did the father put a pillow around his neck? Did he do that to protect himself because how the son's behavior was really disgusting for the father that the father was traumatized so that the father is taking precautions (like putting a pillow around his neck) now out of being afraid and scared of his own son? Or why? If I sounded rude. I deeply apologize. Sometimes, I really struggle with non-verbal communication. Sorry.
@@jmrabinez9254 I see it as the Dad being silly, he's not sweeping the incident under the rug, but showing his adopted fox in a funny way that there is no bad blood between them. If it was a fear thing The Dad would have also did the same for his Wife.
Let's say me and my dad had a fight which I'd never do this if I slapped him on his arm or something. And I then ran away ashamed, he would definitely come find me. And he'd be wearing an arm sling for a broken arm. Obviously a slap wouldn't break his arm but that's his goofy way of saying everything is okay.

Even if I wouldn't had broken his arm, if my dad appeared with a sling for a broken arm after that incident and if I would had been still a kid at that moment, I would personally begin to worry a very lot and, in the worst of cases, to cry and blame myself in the middle of, well, my own mental breakdown. Good animation and a good story, a good kind of unexpected.
