just finished the watch! awesome stuff and thanks again for coming over to hang after years of strictly digital interactions! Still can't believe Jaques made such a huge mistake on the site...
I wouldn't recommend the Flow hive in your northern climate. Propolis can make the mechanics fail. Beekeeping is a pretty satisfying and meditative hobby though! Good luck!
@@LifebyMikeG Thanks! Was hoping it was a bit lower since you are in New York! Lol. Looking for a channel in 5 or 6 that grows in ground and does food as well as flowers.
I’d love to see more Eric (I mean Kevin!) videos where he visits some senior homestead gardeners! There’s so much to learn from our elders.🍅Great video!
When I really started to take UA-cam learning seriously, you two were among the very first I found. From fermenting, gardening, to better cooking and living, I've appreciated you both for years. Great to see the colab!
He can thank greedy humans for the deer "problem" The animals are not the cause of any problems, it is human encroachment and it makes me so angry.that animals have nowhere to go anymore. Habitats are being destroyed on an astronomical scale globally.
The combo gardening self sufficiency and then taking that to the kitchen is spot ON for what I am looking for. Thank you! I haven’t watched his channel since it was pro home cooks. I never realized there was a name change.
Been a permie and a chef for a long, long time (since the ‘90s). Have enjoyed both your channels since you started. Great video, great to see two of my favorite UA-camrs together. Thank you both for all you do and teach and create!
two of my favourite channels to watch here in Australia. Of course I have to adjust the advice for the season difference but so great to see. thanks guys
I once lived on a 3 acre rental property, many years ago. The landlord had about 1/2 acre in peach trees, 1/4 acre in Asian pears, about 12-15 mature pecan trees, with wild mustang grapes & wild blackberries everywhere. The peach orchard was nearing the end of its life cycle when we moved in & within 5 years, all the peach trees had died. The pecans & Asian pears were in robust good health & producing abundantly. The Asian pears were about the size & shape of a softball. They were firm, sweet & nearly dry, versus very juicy. I asked the landlord for the variety name but he didn’t know because his dad had planted the various orchards decades ago. The pecans were divided evenly between native pecans & domesticated pecans. The native pecans had much smaller but a lot sweeter nuts. I really enjoyed living on that property.
Slowly getting set up to put in my first raised bed garden in the spring, thanks to the two channels in this collab. Thanks for all of the tips and info, guys! Also appreciate the "don't overwhelm yourself" reminder... it's so hard to rein myself in when I see so many cool things to do & try. But hearing that you both have taken literal years to get to where you are is super helpful in changing to a more long-term mindset. Thanks again!
Growing fruit trees is one of the best permaculture decisions you can make! The property I grew up on had extremely old, tall stonefruit trees in the back yard and we literally didn't have to do a thing to them. No pruning, fertilizing, watering, etc. They'd just put out pounds and pounds of fruit every summer
I recently visited a chestnut farm where they're alley cropping currents, zucchini, etc. in rows between young trees. As the trees grow larger over the years, the alleys grow more narrow and are eventually removed completely. Gorgeous use of space.
Love both your channels. You both speak to people looking to be more sustainable, self reliant and skilled to manage what ever comes your way. I won’t call it emergency preparedness because that isn’t your focus. Urban homesteaders. Love the garden, can only dream of having one 1/4 of the size - too old to take care of something that big.
Your Black Friday/Cyber Monday ad was just brilliant! I immediately went to your site to see what was on sale. Love your channel, love your style. Love the fact that you feature other gardeners!
Great video! It’s inspiring to see how far Mike’s property has come. In another 3-4 years once all the fruit trees are mature, it’s going to really be pumping out some food!
This was a really fun crossover. Thank you for making it happen. It's a dream to see what each of you has accomplished with your homesteads in a relatively short time. My question: is this feasible for 1 person or a couple to do or do you need help with gardeners/staff? It just seems like an enormous amount of work for 1 person.
My grandfather used to dry tobacco back home in the Philippines. He stuffed it in his pipe. Awesome garden, Mike! I loved your cooking videos way back when. I love the colab. We got to see two of the best in the business!
I'll have to check out his channel some. Every year I'm able to get a little bit more out of my garden. Bit one thing I struggle with is doing full meals. I do some. But I would like to do more of this. When I first started I was more about preservation. But as I've gardened more.. food preservation is a lot of work. The couple of full meals I make... its not as labor intensive. And it uses some more stuff. Like I always over produce peppers for preservation. But using some in a meal.. just more I can use out of the garden
There is a house in the north park area that actually has a partial basement. My great grandparents came over from Italy. They lived in NYC for several years before moving to San Diego. When they bought their house, they had a basement built so they could have a wine cellar down there.
Check out that wall of cedars near the apple orchard. I would replace that living wall pretty soon with something that won't contribute to cedar-apple rust.
I’ve watched both videos from both channels and I enjoyed them for what they were. Two bros wandering around their spaces and sharing the journey. Touring Mikes property was very nice. Liked the half moon steps he has is regal. Nice wide open spaces and the start of a budding orchard would have like to see more reactions from epic on the food plates he was served though. Just surface reactions would have been good. Especially the pickled watermelon rinds but hey I get it we already spent half an hour with you so it wasn’t necessary. Thanks to both of you and hope we keep seeing more collaborations in the future.
I would love to do this... and have to a certain extent but it's hard to maintain by myself and it was really for my senior citizen parents who enjoy gardening. I set up drip irrigation and raised garden beds. I have T posts and chicken wire all around the property and makeshifted children bed frames as doors. I use wood chips from some trees we cut down. It took a long time by self but anything for my parents.
What a lovely video. Those tomatoes you didn't know the name of are probably "Large Red Cherry Tomatoes". I grow them and they are large, very red, meaty 2 bite (except for Kevin) tomatoes. Those and Sungolds are the only cherry tomatoes I grow and I do use them in sauce. Habanadas are also great.
Hello Guys, need some advice on cherry tomatoes... i have 3 cherry tomato plants which are roughly 7-8 months old now, they are around 7 feet tall and flowering consistently. However the flowers are not going to fruit, it just flowers and dries off. The leaves are looking healthy, green and lush, the plants receive full sun throughout the day. The soil it has planted on have equal parts of red soil, vermicompost and cocopeat. I additionally started to provide liquid fertilizer once every two weeks for the last 2 months and im regularly adding leaf molds to it. Any advice is appreciated.
I feel we lean from each other... you, Gardiner Scott, MI Gardiner... all in other locations - me, Sacramento, CA - & it is fun to see what some can grow, Thank you for your videos :-)
I’ve just been concerted I’m in love with your garden and your plate at the end wow that made me hungry but it 23.11 pm and I’m having a glass of 🍷 flicking thru u tube I’ve subscribed.. love your pantry abd your kitchen ❤
Epic. You made me laugh. Your logic about being close to the house is exactly how I plant my herbs. I also plant jalapenos close to the house cause I use them a ton.

Agreed!

Broooo I was not expecting this collab tho! This was awesome!
I really enjoy these crossover episodes, nicely exemplifies the relationship and network building aspects of self-sufficiency. ❤
That Jacque cut in commercial was so cute😂
The organic farm I work at gets 8-12 dump trucks full of wood chips from a local city every year. They get free disposal and we get free compost.

Hopefully you guys appreciate my mistake and don't buy TOO much or else I might have to deal with Eric...
