This was beyond helpful. I found that the camera has some nuances with the digital stabilization. I got mine tonight and found that low light around the house was worse than with my pocket 1, which sensor is way smaller. However, your adjustments make tons of sense. I also started using wide and ultrawide as a way of reducing the crop. The crop works like a zoom that steps the image quality down a bit. When I first started messing with it the image quality was slightly better than a cartoon. Thanks for such a great tutorial.
I bought 3 GoPro Hero 12 Black camera's, then another one, for a total of 4 cams. Then I seen all the DJI Osmo Action 4 low light videos and ordered 4 Action 4 cameras and the DJI dual mic and other accessories. I returned 1 of the Hero 12s for my money. I'll keep the other 3. The Action 4 is clearly the winner. If I known what I know now I would've't never purchased the Hero 12. This is coming from a GoPro guy who own 4 hero 7 black cameras, 4 hero 8 black cameras and a Hero MAX camera. I'm going to upgrade to the Insta 360 X3 cam soon.
@LouisLuzuka Absolutely. If I could do it over again I’d buy the Action 4 once again on launch day like I did. It’s a dependable, stable camera at a good price point.
Great video. I am mounting an Action 4 to an Avata for a night club shoot. These setting look great! Rocksteady off with a run through Gyro is the way to go.
Thanks for this! I don’t yet own a DJI, is it possible to save those settings in the camera somewhere? Or do you need to manually reenter every time you film at night?
Hey, That's really a great tutorial and lot of tips but You definitely recommend gimbal. What about recording night car driving...to get the most sharpness and light when camera is stable attached to the dashboard or window ?
Set your shutter speed range to 1/200 - 1/8000 so that the shutter speed doesn’t dip below 1/200. If you do this you can keep RockSteady on. Alternatively if your mount is really stable and doesn’t shake or wobble you can do the 1/48 with RockSteady off for extra light and the footage should come out good.
Hi there! I would like to ask what would be your recommended settings for a night bicycle ride, in and out of city lights. I'll be using a chest mount and would be moving at around 30km/18mi per hour. Might be using some clips every now and then for vlogging, but priority is to get clear captures of license plates in case something untoward happens. Post processing will be minimal, just some slight color corrections if needed. Thank you and I'd really appreciate your help here 🙂
This is because electronic image stabilization needs a fast enough shutter speed in order to function properly. A shutter speed of 1/200 or faster allows EIS to reliably function properly. Ghosting and jitter are when EIS is on and the shutter speed is too slow. The frames and the motion in the video will not line up and it will look really bad.
New subscriber really enjoyed your video. But I just have one question if you shot the video in 4:3 Why am I seeing it as 16:9 On the UA-cam video, that's what I would like to learn how to do? LO. L
Thank you for your support. Absolutely, so I shot the video in 4:3 but then dropped it onto a 16:9 timeline. What this means is when the 4:3 is conformed to 16:9 the full horizontal footage is there but there is extra in the vertical dimension that is cut off at the top and bottom. Because of this I can adjust 4:3 framing vertically on a 16:9 timeline. 4:3 essentially gives an extra 25% of vertical footage to work with that falls outside the 16:9 framing. Of course with 4:3 you could also use a 4:3 timeline and not have any extra footage to adjust.
Great question. Technically, it doesn’t matter since either FPS can allow for a shutter speed of 1/200. I would say it largely depends on what you want to do with the footage later on (if you want to slow it down, for instance). If you do want to slow down any footage later on then 60fps is a good choice.
A gimbal is highly recommend for moving shots. If you’re doing stable shots where you are not moving a tripod would be helpful to prevent excessive motion with RockSteady off. Doing the 24 or 30 fps with a shutter speed of 1/48 or 1/60 will yield best results if using a gimbal or tripod. If one is not using a gimbal or tripod then I recommend setting the shutter speed range to 1/200 - 1/8000 to prevent the shutter speed from going slower than 1/200 which will create jitter and ghosting when RockSteady is turned on.
Yes, if your camera will be stationary you can turn off RockSteady and set it to 24 or 30 fps and then lower your shutter to match the frame rate (that’s as low as your shutter speed can go for video). Use a white balance of around 3800K. Let the ISO max out at 1600.
Thanks for the video. I will be trying these settings out on my Action 4. I have only just purchased it. So still learning all the settings for it and which is best settings to use. Video like this help loads.
I did not unscrew the mount at any time in this video, but I do leave the magnetic mount attached to the OA4 for two reasons. 1) Since I own other action cameras I do not leave the magnetic mount attached to the thumbscrew mount because if I want to connect a GoPro I’d have to remove the magnetic mount first. 2) It’s easy to lose the magnetic mount if it isn’t left connected to the camera. Unlike the OA4, the GoPro Hero 12 includes the folding fingers and tripod mount built onto the camera.
Thanks for this video! I try with 4:3 - 4k 60 fps - shutter 1/120 and stabilization off for work on gyroflow but the result is very bad (ghost effect). The video was on high ISO (range 1-1600). I try in my home at the night with artificial light. Why I don't have a good result? Thanks Bye Simone
A few different possibilities with this. The shutter speed may still need to be a bit faster, such as around 1/200 for best results, the lighting may be too low, or there may have been too much motion in the video.
Thanks for informative video. What settings would you recommend for low light fast paced action shosts, like riding mtb in the woods (mainly in shadow). It is not as dark, as in your video, but one usually gets this blurry, jelly-like, shaking picture, which does not look nice.
I’d recommend adjusting the shutter speed range to: 1/200 - 1/8000, set your ISO to max out at 1600, and keep RockySteady on. This will ensure your shutter speed doesn’t go slower than 1/200 and should prevent any significant jitter.
Yes leave RockSteady on and then adjust your shutter speed range to the setting of 1/200 - 1/8000. This will ensure you don’t have jitter and ghosting in your footage.
Are all these same settings available in Webcam mode? Also curious, when in daytime, do you go back to Auto? Then at night do you have to manually set all these again or does it have a memory?
I used these settings and my video i so pixeled, is it possibile that my micro sd is bad (Kingston canvas Go plus) or sth is wrong with my camera Dji OA4, or maybe problem is something else
What type of low lighting were you in? How dark was it? If it was really dark without any other lighting it may have been too dark for this sensor to handle. It is possible something is wrong with hardware but this sounds like maybe a case of too little lighting being available.
@asus3384 Yes, I find that low light in the shade in woods or with some city lights like in this video is sufficient but if it’s truly pretty dark the smaller sensor on this camera will struggle.
When I use Gyroflow, it asks for a camera calibration profile in order to use the software. Do you have a file for this setting we can use for Gyroflow?
If you check under the profile options in Gyrflow there should be a profile you can choose from that matches your settings on the Osmo Action 4. That is what I used for mine (I selected it from the available options in Gyroflow).
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you. That’s good to know. I was under the impression that I had to create one myself so I abandoned Gyroflow after a brief experiment. I use my Dji action 4 for filming outdoor walks. I find myself videos get really blurry when it’s shady and the sun isn’t bright.
Thanks, just used the Osmo3 in a museum and was disappointed with the motion blur in the dark areas. So I copied your settings on a note card and will keep them with the camera.
@vincentvincent8798 I do not yet have one other than the “easy mode” best settings to show how that looks. I am working on a night mode one to show the best advanced settings.
With the right settings I would say they both perform about the same in low light. I do like it that the Action 4 has 10-bit footage vs the Ace Pro which currently only has 8-bit footage. Noise reduction can also be adjusted on the Action 4. Both of these can help provide better results in low light.
I also have hohem isteady 4 and osmo action 4 and i dont know if its possible to pair them wireless so that i can start recording videos with hohem gimball power button or it can only connect with gopro
It looks really clear and sharp, did you add sharpness in post after setting the Action 4 to -2 sharpness or is this how -2 sharpness looks like untouched?
@joyindeeamornchai754 Yes it would be. I would day keep in mind the higher sharpness could make the noise appear a bit more depending on the specific filming situation.
I am travelling tomorrow without a gimbal, if I leave 'RockSteady' OFF and then use gyroflow at home do you think I will have ok results? Or would it be better to use rock steady? I am going to be walking with it strapped to my chest. Great video btw, very clear and well made
Great question. If you’re filming in low lighting without a gimbal I would recommend keeping RockSteady on and setting your shutter speed range from 1/200 - 1/8000 to ensure the shutter speed does not get below 1/200 and cause jitter or ghosting. Alternatively, if your filming setting and plans allow for it, you could film important scenes with both options if possible. You could use the settings above with RockSteady on to film a scene and then use the shutter speed of 1/48 (with 24fps) or 1/60 (with 30fps) with RockSteady Off to film the same scene. Then when you’re home you could use Gyroflow with the scenes you filmed with RockSteady off and see if the results are good enough for you. If they aren’t you’d still at least have the “backup” of the scenes you filmed with RockSteady on even if they are a bit darker. Hope it goes well and that you have fun.
I record in mostly 16:9 to post to instgram/social media if i want to. Why does gyroflow not work in 16:9 & only in 4:3. Is 4:3 even good to use for instagram/social media?
That 4:3 can be needed so that there is extra resolution available for stabilizing before exporting as 16:9. Your finished product for Instagram and social media may need to be 9:16 (vertical). 4:3 is simply the starting point but all finished products can be exported as 16:9 or 9:16.
Yes, the gyroscope inside the camera measures motion data and records this in the video file inside the camera. This data in the video files can then be used to stabilize footage when editing with a program that can read the gyro data and compensate for the camera movements and then created stabilized footage.
These settings will translate similarly to the Action 3 but the Action 3 has a smaller sensor so the low light results will likely not be quite as nice as the Action 4.
@@GreatDayForAHikeI’ve watched most of your Dji videos and stored what settings I could just for my European holiday. Unfortunately I don’t have the know how or pc to post edit. Thank mate !
I haven’t had any overheating issues minus when I did the initial setup of the camera and had a power bank connected rapid charging it. In other words, while using it for recording it has been okay for me even in 4K60 but I don’t use it stationary except for time lapses which generate less heat than video recording does.
If using it indoors and stationary in 4K with RockSteady on and continuously recording it will likely overheat after about 20-30 minutes according to the data I see. If using it outdoors while moving or filming several clips and not one continuous clip it will likely be fine and not overheat.
Thank you. I did not do any denoising or sharpening with this footage but did so some light grading of it as far as adding back some saturation since I captured this in the Flat color profile.
Great question. I have not used the lens hood. I suspect it would yield about the same results and perhaps slightly better. Removing the lens cover entirely had also said to help. Though removing the lens cover could result in damage to the lens and is not recommended of course.
Hi! I’m little late to the party. Just bought Action4 and came across your video. Very helpful to me however I dint know how to post edit nor have the tools. What is the best setting without post grading for low lights. Please don’t leave out any details. I am totally new and only use camera for vacations. Thank you…! Also do if I need to “enable” low light environment.
@GreatDayForAHike my issue is that I recorded videos in the low light room, and at the end of the video clip, the video plays weird like buffering. I'm not sure if it's called "ghost" or not. But the sound is still clear. It's like the video plays and stops and play and stops...
@kingkong2598 This sounds like ghosting and jitter. This will happen if the shutter speed drops to too slow of a value with RockSteady on. I have found that the shutter speed needs to be at least as fast as about 1/200 in order to function properly with RockSteady on. Alternatively, RockSteady can be turned off and a gimbal used to mechanically stabilize the footage if a slower shutter speed such as 1/50 is desired (as shown in this video).
Your setup is the same setup that I use. But most of the time, during travel I set the exposures to auto (SS1/25-1/8000 ISO100-800). WB set to 5500K. Shoot at 4K25/RS+. FOV Ultra Wide. Sharpness -2 Noise Reduction -1. I used normal color profile most of the time, unless I think I wanna enhance it more then I use D Log M. I fixed the temperature later during post. I used the same setup for hyperlapse. This setup is good enough to produce usable footages including in low lights condition. I think I'll buy a gimbal for better stabilization in low light.
These are the links for the three I mention in this video (they are also in the description). Budget Gimbal: Hohem iSteady Pro 4: amzn.to/3tcQuRv Mid-Range Gimbal: Moza Mini Max: amzn.to/3PWTV7C Higher-End Gimbal: DJI Ronin-SC: amzn.to/3roOJ3b
@davidpoo66 That’s a great question. I have not tested out that specific gimbal before. So I cannot say for sure on how that specific gimbal compares to the DJI one I own and use.
Hi, I am just starting out with night settings on my Action 4 as the nights have drawn in in the UK, and I have written down your settings to test out - my attempts thus far haven't been great. I don't have a gimbal but may considering buying one, as I like making walking videos. My only question is compared to lots of other 'tests' out there, yours is by far the smoothest and best quality footage I have seen, others are pretty ordinary in comparison with blocky distortion. How are you editing it to look like that? I use Da Vinci and Capcut, so I am wondering if I capture the video with settings like you suggest, to get them as smooth as you video is, what would I be looking to do to in post. You only need to look up Action 4 night footage to see the difference between yours and most of the others out there. Cheers for any help.
Yes, a gimbal is useful for getting best results. If a gimbal isn’t being used it is important to not let the shutter speed go any slower than 1/200 as I explain in this video due to those sharper frames being needed for RockSteady to work properly.
Are you able to provide a bit more input on what you’re asking? If you’re asking if footage with those fps can be combined in the same project on the same timeline, the answer is yes.
the audio quality in this video is amazing. is this from the dji wirelss mic. im trying to improve my audio thanks. i subscribed too as soon as i heard the audio quality keep up the good work.
I don't understand why you have switched to 4:3? The video on UA-cam is clearly 16:9? Also why do we use the wide angle? Other than that those settings are literally night and day compared to the out of the box ones! Thanks a lot!
Great questions. First, the reason I use 4:3 and Wide angle is because the Osmo Action 4 only provides Gyro data in 2.7K and 4K 24-60FPS video in a 4:3 aspect ratio and the field of view set to wide. In this video, I believe I show the menu that the Action 4 shows with this requirement for the aspect ratio and field of view for the gyro data. If I film in 16:9 and/or use a different field of view there will not be the gyro data available later on. If you film in 2.7K or 4K 100/120 FPS you can film in 16:9 but you have to have the wide field of view. However, these FPS would require a faster shutter speed which equals not as much light so I don't recommend those. The 4:3 isn't a problem because it will automatically adjust on a 16:9 timeline and display as 16:9 on UA-cam. Hope this helps!
@@GreatDayForAHike absolutely, thanks for the detailed answer! I want to use mine for home podcasting and I have switched to 16:9 and Narrow angle view. Is this ok for my setup? I don't have any additional lighting.
would of been great and make the review (tho not really necesary) complete if you put the footage of how the action 4 footage looked in the dark - when you let it on auto how it came out of the box style - so it would of contrasted to the viewer if it really is worth it or not doing the settings
Thanks for the info, your low-light footage looks great compared to the auto settings. I’m planning on picking up this camera for my next trip and will try this out. Keep up the great work.
Hey im planning to sell my S23 and buy Dji osmo 4 . Im so impressed by low light shots . Can i record video like this without gimbal? Hope you reply thanks 🙏
Yes, you technically can without a gimbal, but in order to have usable footage later on that isn't ruined due to ghosting and jitter you do have to set the shutter speed range to not allow the shutter speed to go any slow than about 1/200. This of course won't give as good of results as using it with a gimbal with RockSteady off and a slower shutter speed. The slower speed allows more light into the sensor on this camera.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you so much for reply. Its difficult for me to purchase additional gimbal due to its cost. Does GoPro 12 requires gimbal? Im sorry for asking dumb question have never tried a camera or gimbal before
@BruceLee-go2vy Yes, the Hero 12 would also require a gimbal and Hypersmooth off or the alternative of the shutter speed set to 1/200 at slowest in order to prevent ghosting and jitter.
I simply just turn on the Auto low light and film does a great jobhen sitting there setting up, and then saving a Custome, but defeats the sharpness nd video noise,
To get the 1/48 shutter speed one does need RockSteady off and if stabilization is wanted a gimbal is needed unless stabilizing in post. Any good gimbal that supports action cameras should do the trick.

@asus3384 Yes, I find that low light in the shade in woods or with some city lights like in this video is sufficient but if it’s truly pretty dark the smaller sensor on this camera will struggle.
@@GreatDayForAHikeI hope this low setting will work in the shady woods. I did just order a gymbal.
Gyro data gonna work in only wide angle mode right ?
That is correct. The lens has to be set to Wide and then it also has to match the resolution and fps combinations DJI provides this in.
Thanks, just used the Osmo3 in a museum and was disappointed with the motion blur in the dark areas. So I copied your settings on a note card and will keep them with the camera.
Is it better than dji action 5 pro when it comes to low light?
Action 5 Pro is better with a dedicated night mode to some degree but using these manual settings on the 4 and the 5 Pro yield great results.
@GreatDayForAHike do you have a video of action 5 pro best night mode settings?
@vincentvincent8798 I do not yet have one other than the “easy mode” best settings to show how that looks. I am working on a night mode one to show the best advanced settings.
@@GreatDayForAHike hope you make another video for manual lowlight setting for Action 5 Pro
: Does this setting of Action 4 be better than Insta 360 Ace pro default low light mode?
With the right settings I would say they both perform about the same in low light. I do like it that the Action 4 has 10-bit footage vs the Ace Pro which currently only has 8-bit footage. Noise reduction can also be adjusted on the Action 4. Both of these can help provide better results in low light.
I also have hohem isteady 4 and osmo action 4 and i dont know if its possible to pair them wireless so that i can start recording videos with hohem gimball power button or it can only connect with gopro
@@npc4188 In this case I use the OA4 with the remotecontrol. It works very well!
Thank you for these settings. What would you recommend for car mounts to record the windshield from the back seat?
It looks really clear and sharp, did you add sharpness in post after setting the Action 4 to -2 sharpness or is this how -2 sharpness looks like untouched?
I wish he would have gone into the processing as he definitely added sharpness.
I went back and checked this file and I did not add sharpness to any of this sample footage. It is as it came out of the camera with the sharpness.
@@GreatDayForAHike so it would be even sharper at sharpness standard?
@joyindeeamornchai754 Yes it would be. I would day keep in mind the higher sharpness could make the noise appear a bit more depending on the specific filming situation.
where do you position the camera on those night walks? is that in your head? or are you holding it?, nvm it was the Hohem iSteady Pro 4.
I was holding it at my side.
@@GreatDayForAHike WOWOWOW looks like i found my night walk company
I appreciate the detailed and very prompt response. Thank you !
4:3 is simply the starting point but all finished products can be exported as 16:9 or 9:16.
can someone please explain me what is the use of gyroo data..
Yes, the gyroscope inside the camera measures motion data and records this in the video file inside the camera. This data in the video files can then be used to stabilize footage when editing with a program that can read the gyro data and compensate for the camera movements and then created stabilized footage.
If I put all this into the action 3 will it be similar image quality?
These settings will translate similarly to the Action 3 but the Action 3 has a smaller sensor so the low light results will likely not be quite as nice as the Action 4.
@@GreatDayForAHikeI’ve watched most of your Dji videos and stored what settings I could just for my European holiday. Unfortunately I don’t have the know how or pc to post edit. Thank mate !
For an action camera, that looks quite nice.
Yes, I found the quality to be impressive considering the size of camera and sensor this footage came from.
Nice set up, how about the overheating on os4
I haven’t had any overheating issues minus when I did the initial setup of the camera and had a power bank connected rapid charging it. In other words, while using it for recording it has been okay for me even in 4K60 but I don’t use it stationary except for time lapses which generate less heat than video recording does.
If using it indoors and stationary in 4K with RockSteady on and continuously recording it will likely overheat after about 20-30 minutes according to the data I see. If using it outdoors while moving or filming several clips and not one continuous clip it will likely be fine and not overheat.
Sir, why does the Gyroflow gives error to my footage from DJI osmo 4 and it say lens not recognized?
Helpful video! Did you add denoise or sharpness on your editing? thanks
Thank you. I did not do any denoising or sharpening with this footage but did so some light grading of it as far as adding back some saturation since I captured this in the Flat color profile.
@@GreatDayForAHike do u think it's good enough for short travel video? include day and night footage
Have you tried it using the Lens Hood? If so is there a difference?
Great question. I have not used the lens hood. I suspect it would yield about the same results and perhaps slightly better. Removing the lens cover entirely had also said to help. Though removing the lens cover could result in damage to the lens and is not recommended of course.
By lens hood, is that the circular thing in the standard combo that has threads but no glass?
@@joebowbeer Yep that's the one.
Thanks for the tips. So excited to explore how to use the action 4 properly. Did you also put the night len guard on? Cheer!
You’re welcome. I did not put anything special on the camera. I just used the default lens cover that came installed on the Action 4.
Would it be the same setting for indoor low light filming?
Yes, these settings should translate nicely to that type of setting as well.
@GreatDayForAHike thanks for the reply. How about just turning off the rocksteady and don't change any other settings?
@kingkong2598 You could do that too.
Hi Great Day,
What Are The Best Filters To Get ?
I own this set from Freewell and use them a lot: amzn.to/3WCJnwx
They’ve been a great set.
I think I'll buy a gimbal for better stabilization in low light.
how would you stabilize it at night photography when mounted on the chest?
Please show me the link for the gimbal you mentioned, I can't find them!
These are the links for the three I mention in this video (they are also in the description).

@@GreatDayForAHike I also found the Hohem MT-2; would you still recommend the DJI over this model? Thanks so much!
Cheers for any help.
you need a gimbal in order to achieve what he is getting. DJI A4 just can't take good night time stable shots without a gimbal.
Yes, a gimbal is useful for getting best results. If a gimbal isn’t being used it is important to not let the shutter speed go any slower than 1/200 as I explain in this video due to those sharper frames being needed for RockSteady to work properly.
Great tips, thank You for sharing. ❤
Thank you!
How do we handle 25fps and 29.97fps I. Video editing projects?
Are you able to provide a bit more input on what you’re asking? If you’re asking if footage with those fps can be combined in the same project on the same timeline, the answer is yes.
@@GreatDayForAHike thanks, you answered my question.

My friend, thanks for your sharing. Really appreciate your tips. My learning curve got shorter :)
You’re welcome and I’m glad you found this video helpful.

Tell me, is the picture in your d-log also making terrible noise?? In standard everything is ok, apparently the noise reduction works.

Hey this felt like a promo for the gimbal.
To get the 1/48 shutter speed one does need RockSteady off and if stabilization is wanted a gimbal is needed unless stabilizing in post. Any good gimbal that supports action cameras should do the trick.
@@GreatDayForAHike It says that bluetooth connectivity doesn't work with dji action 4 for the Hohem isteady pro 4 l. How did you use it when recording this? I want to get it but want to make sure
@UmbreOnWheels I either use my phone via the DJI Mimo App or hit record physically on the camera.

Please do mention Gimbal in the title of your video. Video is nice but surely for someone who cannot afford a gimbal its of little use.
Whoa I’m getting one of these instead of a GoPro 12. I have 2 9’s and night footage is nearly unwatchable haha.
It’s a great camera. Stable with that larger sensor that works a bit better in low light.
1/200 is too much, i would put it much slower.
1/200 is if you don’t want to use a gimbal and have RockSteady off. With a gimbal and RockSteady off I recommend 24fps and 1/50 for the shutter speed.
