• low quality
• ill-fitting
• wrong volume
Yep. Worst sound effect.
sounds like normal SH4 to me
*best
Other bullet points:
• lack of situational deviation
• lack of impact (no hit sound from your weapon)
Normally good sound artists will add random tone variations to sound effects so it doesn't end up like this one where it's as though someone is hitting replay on a sound sample over and over again. Terrible stuff.
It's a PS2 game dude that being said I have no other arguements it was as fuckin weird then as it was now
I swear this sounds like a corruption, especially when the monster slides down the stairs
Wait I thought this was a corruption. Whoever was doing the sound mixing was sick that day ig 😭.
out of context this makes silent hill 4 look like it has the quality of stray souls
I find it funny that I instantly recognized your channel icon as dark nebula’s eye lol
crazy how one little bad decision can give you a very different perception of a game, especially if it's isolated like it is in this clip
@@Horst_RadishI always think it's kirby goatse
@@JacobKinsleyi miss 15 seconds ago when i didn't read that 😂
@@badabingeeexactly that’s like if the nurses started to moan
It just changes the whole vibe
So, when you first get there, you see Wally removing some organs from one of those nurses, presumably their lungs. Meaning there's no lungs to make sounds, so instead they can only expel gas from their stomachs. I get the theory behind why they burp, but it will still always be one of the funniest things.
Oh god this video keeps on giving
Am I fighting unspeakable horrors or Barney from Simpson?
You're fighting burpable horrors
Master Belch
Team Silent showed no restraint on the unedited stock sound effects in SH4.
Oh my god you even included the stair one
Least it came out the attic and not the basement
This is peak Yamaoka sound design
It just sounds like someone put that as a joke/placeholder and then completely forgot to change it before the game released
its supposed to be like a hollow corpse and the gases come out as you hit which kinda does a burp noise but it just sounds funny if anything else
Apparently it’s supposed to be the sound of a bloated corpse expelling gas but…uh…yeah
Ever since Vin said he’d be playing SH4 I was anticipating this moment lol
THE STAIRS HAHAHAHA
The freaking stairs, dude. 😂😂😂
I have been waiting for this video from the moment I saw what Vinny was playing
This honestly seems like a placeholder sound effect they just forgot to change 😂
I honestly did think it was Vinny the first time
they burped belchily down the stairs
That’s a banjo kazooie sound bite
I heard it was supposed to be gases escaping the decomposing body, but no one got that.
The burps down the stairs i cant as its fading
The fact he was told about it was good. The fact that he found *that* staircase was gold.
Moments like this are why I will never, ever stop watching Vinesauce
At first, I thought that sound was Vinny. It just couldn't compute in my head that they would make something that scuffed.
Didn’t know Chuck from Earthworm Jim was in this game
I remember this. I was so terrified of that enemy, only for the fear to completely disappear...
And no one gets that this is a disturbing concept? Those are decomposing bodies and he is beating the internaly stored gas out of them.
BURP
Yeah but they could have picked a different sound
@@TheDoomMaster They could have! But once you understand, it's kinda genius.
@@TheDoomMasterNot really
Walter removed their lungs and uteruses
Its literally rotted stomach gas
Good concept, terrible execution. They could have made the "burp" sound pretty scary, even if it's a bit silly, if they bothered to put any effort into mixing and modulation/variation.
And it's still arguably not the funniest thing about Silent Hill 4.
That honour goes to the wonderful plot point driving our main villain.
It sounds straight outta Earthbound.
IIRC the story behind this sound effect was that the original sound was "too much", like it was meant to evoke corpse gas wheezing out, so someone decided to replace it at the last minute. At least, that's the story I heard.
This video required multiple breaks to not pass out.
I am an unapologetic SH4 defender.
It's my favorite in the franchise other than 2, and even then, sometimes a coin must be flipped.
I say this, because I can't even begin to imagine what kind of crack they were smoking when that sound effect actually made it to print.
That's got to be a placeholder they forgot to replace. I refuse to believe that's intentional. No fucking way. Lmao
*distant burps*
Cruelty sqaud sounds
Tbey burp because they represent corpses that are letting out air, a common occurrence
Sh4 has the shittiest enemy sfx out of every SH game.
why does this sound like a randomizer mod lol
Silent Hill 4 is arguably a good title, iconic for several reasons. This is not one of them. 💀
It's kinda hot
😐
Master Belch has been doing some strange shit after Earthbound these days
He didn't know????
1:15
what you came for
The complete lack of impact sound is killing me almost as much
The burp IS the impact sound! They burp from the freshly axed holes
@@SoberCake Erupting gas out their axe holes, you could say...
@@Chicky_Lumpsboy if I had a nickel
They knew exactly what they where doing when they put those enemies in the staircase lmao
I've always loved Silent Hill 4 but seriously...
Another part that always stood out as a "wtf guys" moment is a little later, at the bottom of the water prison, when all the twin victims are lined up perfectly, like the devs just Gmod copy/pasted their models...
I'm interested to see what Vinny says when he reaches that part, he will no doubt comment of how out of place it is.
One sure thing is they didn't know how to animate and program falling monsters, they just made a "slide the model a bit with a burp until floor is flat". What a mess of a game lol
I’m almost positive this was intentional and they wanted to simulate characters rolling down the steps when they died, but it did not translate well or came out unpolished.
@@neirinjoseph6817What where the hallways extremely large but shrinks near the door?
@@eatanotherzio6811 yes lmao
The burp sounds fading as the enemy slides down the stairs is truly the icing on that cake.
Doppler effect is inherently comedy gold.
@@Feuerhamster That's not what the doppler effect is.
@@Feuerhamster That would've made it funnier yeah.
@@Mabra51 Dopler effect is when thing moves away from you
@@JacobKinsley To be more precise, it's what results in a sound sounding higher pitched when its source is quickly moving towards you, but lower pitched when moving away from you.
In the video we hear the sound getting quieter, which is not the same thing, but does accompany the Doppler effect.
Yo, all that terror in the design, and they seriously hit em with the burp.mp3
That went from a "nope, not touching that" to "yep, im gonna need to touch four of them at once".
youtubers when they get popular
are we still talking about the enemy?
0:51 sounds like a bad mobile game in the way it just repeats the same exact sound over and over
Thing is, i kinda get the idea they had. Bloated corpses full of rotten air inside of them due to decomposing is metal as hell. But even SH2 had the decency of having more than one sound effect for its enemies.
i agree it just needed an actual impact sound, and better timing. it also needed to be way less generic. a burp makes sense, but not one from a random sound effects cd. bespoke burpage was required. it needed to sound properly dark, and dead, and gutted. air exploding directly from wounds you’re making in the stomach, stuff like that. mix it up definitely
@@tonoornottonoand it probably should've had a weak whistling echo, as if remaining gases were escaping from the wound, unrestrained.
These enemies have nothing on the horrifying sounds lying figures make lol. Yamaoka couldve gone for something similar to that, im convinced he was just burnt out from having just finished the masterpiece that was Silent Hill 3
SH3 has such insane visuals and sound design, im sure this is why some SH4 fans are salty about 3 being clearly the favorite of the two lmao. I mean 4 has backed in lighting and last-minute uncooked sfx and have no interesting textures and second half just reuses assets. Mommy Team Silent playing favorites
Maybe more of a sort of death rattle, like, guttural gross sounds. Not just a belch…
Yamaoka: "Now what sound would these horrible creatures make when struck?"
Coworker: *burps*
Yamaoka: "Perfect!"
It was not Yamaoka
**burps an stock burp sound effect**
@@NikoKozlowitz Did he stop doing the sound after 3? I thought 4 was the final Team Silent release, so assumed he was involved.
There's so many stock sound effects in this one that I can't help but feel like they were just placeholders that ended up getting left in because they ran out of time.
So I know it sounds ridiculous but the noise is supposed to be natural gases leaving their hollow bodies. It’s silly, but it does make it creepier

a disaster so bad the composer pretended to be tone deaf for like 2 decades.
Are you serious????
@@datguy9408Yep! The composer for the Resident Evil director's cut (and also Onimusha: Warlords) pretended to be deaf for nearly 20 years, until it came out that 1) he can hear perfectly fine and 2) all of his work was ghostwritten.
I'd like to imagine a programmer added this sound in as a joke during testing, but forgot to change it back
@@grunkleg.29691 I think that there's potentially some cultural aspects to it as well.
I'm not sure how true it is, however I have seen some claims online about Japanese people having a serious taboo concerning flatulence.
It's possible that from the perspective of the person doing the sound design it may not read the same way. It would probably still be funny to an extent, but there's potentially another layer to it, kind of like how in Elden Ring the Loathsome Dung Eater is meant to be threatening precisely because he kills people by eating ass and sucking the life out of people through their anus, whereas to you or me that may just be laughable.
That said, I think that it's definitely intended to be absurd when they fall down the stairs like that.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090You can pick up a lot of japanese absurdism and horror in SH4 especifically, since it feels so different as a Silent Hill Game, so it kinda makes sense.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 Are you serious about the Dung Eater, I did NOT pick up that particular... detail of his behaviors.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 Oh so he's a kappa.
@casanovafunkenstein5090 Okay, so I'm trying to find any lore on what you said about the loathsome dung eater, but the only thing I found about why he's called that was a Japanese myth that a common belief is that the human soul is encased within a specific organ in.. the poo poo area some may say.

Still not as bad as the death sound of the dog enemy. It's a flat out stock sound of a cheetah roar you heard a million times; it yanks you right out of the game first time you hear it.
edit: commenter pointed out its the sound of a panther, I believe he's correct.
RREOOOWWW!!!
Pantherk
And they show up so early, too. Really sets the tone for the rest of the game. I guess the chimpanzees later aren't much better though. And don't the flying bug things do the stock archive bat screech as well?
Multiple cats are called "panther" so I figure I'd specify further- it's a puma/cougar. Though I'm pretty sure that cougars and cheetahs are more closely related to each other than either of them is to the actual "big cats" so you weren't *too* far off.
@@Umbra_Nocturnuschimpanzees are kinda disturbing though, especially if you interpret em as how Walter saw humans in general.

I heard mess up funny reason why that monster burps,
it mostly a walking corpse with built up gas that some real dead bodies can do.
I kinda wonder why there isn't any gassy zombies in zombie movies.
this clip is why
There's a scene in Zombie Vs Mardi Gras where a guy gets zombified while in the middle of shitting, and he walks around making fart.mp3 sounds. But that's not quite what you were asking, I just have PTSD from that movie
@@MatthewPherigo
lol I think there's a reason why they don't make undead 100 percent accurate to how a real body works in films.
@@c-puff Yup, be more of a comedy then a horror series, in the walking dead XD
A plausible explanation would be that the zombies reanimate faster than the gas buildup could start, with the movement of their bodies forcing the gas out. That said, it would make sense that they would be burping (and possibly farting) throughout the entirety of their shambling, saddening existence.
Who the fuck at the Konami sound team thought this was a good idea, unless this wasn't even revised and shipped without realization
Same game series that had an empty room that serves no purpose other than to repeatedly play a glass shattering sound effect every few seconds (it's in the silent hill 1 main channel video)

The one enemy that i can't help but uncontrollably laugh at upon sending down the stairs
That enemy probably has indigestion.
tell them to take their omeprazole then???
This monster represents the protagonist indigestion
Vinny should offer it his tums.
Someone said that they are bloated corpses and that the burps are gas being liberated. Makes sense but there had to be a better way to accomplish that.
They could definitely have made like a grotesque popping wet bag sound or something for that, which could be really unsettling. Instead they just went with... deep fried belch.

But some of its enemy hit sounds is not one of them 😭
It's so unfortunate too because the burping nurses are really scary looking, they just have one of the dumbest SFX possible.
I was watching this live and i think it was when he reached the hospital world him and chat were discussing the enemy sounds and he said something like “but no they don’t take away from the atmosphere for me”
I was like “if you didn’t think the enemy sounds were distracting before you will soon”
I like to imagine the dev burped into the laptop mic during extremely early development stages and literally no one noticed the entire time
"Alright, this enemy is too scary. How do we alleviate that?"
Does this dude subside exclusively on extra bubbly soda?
So a little PSA about this silly sound, it’s actually meant to be gases from the monster’s decomposing hollow body. It’s funny but that does help give it a little more depth
Not having any impact sound at all was a bad decision and the sound they used is borderline whoopee cushion sounds lol. There are sounds of gas escaping flesh (sucking chest wounds) that would have worked fine but that wasn't in the stock sound catalogue I guess 😂
The worst part is even in the isolation of this clip, the monster before you know what was genuinely intimadating. The way it just quietly walked over, Vinny running away, that strafe side to side while squaring up with it. It's a shame really. At least you can appreciate an equally genuine f*ck up, it's how you can know that something is real.

Little Mac hitting a staggered King Hippo in Punch-Out Wii
According to the Wiki, the burping-like sounds may possibly indicate the emission of gases produced from bodily decomposition, specifically from where the lungs and uterus were removed. This may even tie them into Eileen; when the whiteboard with Eileen's x-rays is more clearly visible in a cutscene, the term "vomicae" is present, which is a condition where a pus-filled cavity caused by tissue decay, typically in the lungs, is found and causes the expulsion of the vile fluid. Perhaps the Patients are a vision of what Walter planned of Eileen's body to become.
