    We have 2 Flow Hives and LOVE them! Our cost was way less than traditional way of harvesting the honey. They are a huge timesaver, no disturbing the bees and none of that extra equipment to harvest. And no cleanup!

      Thank you for commenting. I'll be extracting honey this week from last year's harvest. There is a lot of work and cleanup in extracting with a traditional hive. that is why I didn't do it last year. Because of how much honey the bees are making this year I'll need the boxes and frames very shortly.

      Hello, I want to buy a Flow Hive but as a total beginner I’m not sure where to start. We grow 13 varieties organic fruit: 7 varieties berries, pears, apples etc. Is it difficult to start beekeeping? I don’t have access to bee swarms & would prefer to buy a nun to start. Thank I for your video! Chris in IN

    Interesting take on the Flow hive. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the cost you showed is for 1. Flow hive, right? The cost for the centrifuge and other equipment would be split across all your hives. Meaning- Does the cost comparison account for having a flow hive for each hive? Thanks for sharing. You do wonderful videos!

      I wanted to be as fair and exact as possible. I made this video for my sister who wants to be a beekeeper. You are correct, this is initial cost for one hive and extraction equipment. I listed everything she needed from Flow Hive and Mann Lake for the hive and extraction. She plans on having only one or at most two hives. If she purchased two Langstroth hives, instead of the one I show, and the extraction equipment it would cost her about $350 more than if she purchased two Flow hives, which need no extraction equipment. In other words buying one or even two Flow hives is less expensive and considerably less work for extraction than buying traditional hives and extraction equipment. As mentioned in the video, I don't own a flow hive, even though I work with them in my apiary. For backyard beekeepers who want to enjoy beekeeping and have one or two hives I whole heartily recommend the Flow Hives.

    One is easy and looks cute, doesn't squash as many bees, and you can get different flavours of honey from each frame. It is easy, family orientated and many people have been brought into beekeeping who would not have done so otherwise. It is also more of an outlay if you buy the whole kit.
    The other is probably better for commercial purposes as you don't care what they look like and neither do the bees. You probably want all your honey to be a consistent homogenised flavour and a big set up for extraction is worthwhile and hopefully you have the space for big barrels etc. Considering the flow hive "invention" is basically just the frame there is space in the world for both methods or a mix. Some people just need to calm down a bit. I have 3 hives all 3 are Flow hives, I would never have done it otherwise. I get some local people in if I need help as I'm learning all the time so I'm definitely no expert, and yes I consider it a hobby that supplies my friends and neighbours. I will never buy shop bought honey again, there is no comparison, it's like a different product.

    Interesting. Are hives in Idaho Africanized or are the winters too cold? ❤

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  Рік тому +2

      I started keeping honey bees in Washington state, then Texas and now Idaho. I have never seen an Africanized hive. If there is an Africanized hive all you have to do is kill the queen and replace her with a more gentle one. In one generation you'll transform the hive.

      That's pretty racist calling more aggressive bees "africanized" but I can totally understand it when I look at the FBI violent crime by race statistics.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  Рік тому +8

      @@LegalTyranny People who come from Africa are called Africans. Bees that come from Africa are called African bees. African bees are known to go into hives, kill the queen and take over the hive. Russian bees are known for their high level of hygiene and hive defense. Italian bees are known for their calm behavior and honey production. All of these characteristics are documented and known throughout the beekeeping industry. Stating the characteristics of the bees is not racist in any way.

    my concern with flow hive, is that it is made from food grade plastic which needs to be cleaned every so often to prevent the chemicals from the plastic from leaching into the product.

      @@Michael-pv9ux what the concern?
      wax from bees is edible
      your statement and reasoning just not added up....
      look
      "bees also do not remove old bee wax when they make the hive"
      answer is simple
      Bees don't replace bee wax since they is holder, they just replace the the seal to prevent it from leak or loss the water content
      yes bees clean but that doesn't stop plastic from leaching out

      leaching out? we not live near vulcano, the temp isn't that bad, if you think, you already know answer, if the HARD PLASTIC leaching out, then the bees surely dead from heat

      @@dhana662 Dude, u really have no clue what the hell your talking about, u might as well just get off the internet and try not to be a keyboard warrior, or maybe actually go and study about BPA and BPS. Also "my statements" isn't statements, its concerns on a product that is being shown in this video. U have no idea what your t talking about and its clear just by your responses, so just move on, I have respect but clearly you DO NOT, which that you have shown with ur last response and clearly I've triggered you, so grow a spine since u cannot understand the concern I have, many people have the same concern when it comes to food as well as the FOOD INDUSTRY. My main concern is just cleaning the cells within the hive, and to which is a problem with this product, BEES DO NOT CLEAN OUT THE CELL WALLS AND REPLACE IT. This means it will need to be cleaned over time to prevent leaching and inspected for deterioration. BTW plastic can leach out at 86F like PET plastic which is used in liquid and food containers. Guess what the flow hive uses polypropylene plastic. so please do some research or actually have an understanding of it instead of your trash answers or ur trust me bro words

    I could see using a flow hive to build funds for the traditional setup. I'd be seriously concerned about those flowhive cells made from some type of plastic. Who knows what toxic stuff could be in there breaking down over time. I simply can't trust plastics as they've been used as an attack vector on the public. Endocrine system disrupting things were intentionally put in other plastics.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  Рік тому +1

      I understand your concern. Probably 90% or more of backyard and commercial beekeepers use food-grade plastic foundations in their hives. So using plastic in not a new thing or exclusive to the Flow hive.
      According to Jake at Flow Hive, "The Center frame parts are made from a Virgin Food grade Polypropylene which is also free from any Bisphenol compounds and is widely accepted as one of the safest plastics for food contact. It has also been used for many years in beehives for both Brood and Honey combs."
