she's right though, veganism is an ethical belief to minimize animal suffering as much as possible, and it's not just a diet. this undermines the whole movement, especially when people just use it to be trendy and go on and off. but tbh she could've taken Brandon aside after the show and talked in private about things like 'hey if you still use/consume animal products you're not vegan but just eating a plant based diet, because veganism is a lifestyle choice' and give him tips on how he can change things like suggest good candy and explain why honey is not vegan. and maybe suggest some documentaries or something 100% agree with what she said, but 0% agree with the delivery and time and place too.
Not everyone is as educated on veganism but at least he's trying. She wasn't helpful at all, she was pratronizing and condescending. Brandon is the person I’d most want to be friends with and learn about veganism from, if I could choose anyone in this group. His story and motivations were interesting and I kept getting frustrated when he was cut off or judged.

People usually raise bees for the honey and considering the decline of wild bees due to pesticides and urbanization of the environment, raising bees is a very very good thing. Removing honey generally doesn't harm hives and hives can even become "honey bound," requiring the hive to move altogether as there's no longer space to lay eggs. It is a nuanced issue and Erin is quite unreasonable to insist *no* vegans eat honey.

Thats not neccesarily true. A lot of beekeeping does damage to the enviroment (w certain pesticides for instance) and als o sometimes uses cruel or exploitative practices like clipping the wings of the queen bee. There's plenty of non-harmful beekeeping (look for local small-beekeing-byuisnesses and traditional beekeeping) but it bothers me to consistently see this misinfo being spread that all beekeeping is ethical when in reality a lot of it is bad for both the bees and the enviroment.

She's definitely being unnecessarily aggressive, but she is not wrong on "nearly everything". I think at the time the video was made, the distinction between plant-based and vegan wasn't as common. Brandon is plant-based and shouldn't have been attacked for it, Erin is a vegan because the essence of veganism is based on a moral philosophy. She assumed everyone else in that room was vegan in the definition that she was and then it got confusing. inb4 everyone thinks i'm defending her, I am not.
as a vegan myself, i can promise that most of us strive to be as unlike erin as we possibly can in our day-to-day lives LOL. i myself went vegan when i was 16 for animal ethics reasons but i also think it’s important to remember that it can be scary for people to make the transition that initially seems so drastic when that’s just the way they were brought up. i don’t believe at all in judgement & guilt-tripping, but couldn’t recommend veganism to everyone enough, even if it takes the tiniest baby steps to get all the way there :)
For me the issue is that Erin sniffed out the most insecure person in it's veganism and that was Brandon, because he wasn't vegan for that long and then she just went to town on him. It's just sad to see people take a morally superior stance over people instead of encouraging them or being understanding. Sad.
She's the perfect example of why people have a bad opinion of vegans. When someone says they're vegan we think of someone exactly like her: militant, pushy, angry, lecturing, judgmental. You don't want to be around someone like that. You can't be yourself because they're constantly judging you. And it's even worse if you aren't vegan. So for someone like Brandon who is new to veganism, meeting someone like Erin has to be demoralizing and embarrassing. I can see why he was questioning himself. I think it’s because in order to eat fully raw, you need an amount of money and privilege that a lot of people will just never have. The cheapest and longest lasting vegan foods are things like dried beans and rice bought in bulk. Fresh produce is expensive and goes bad fast so you have to go shopping several days a week. Most people can’t afford that and don’t have enough free time to make salads and smoothies for every meal 🫠 and coming from that level of privilege can definitely make a person out of touch with reality, thus the bizarre way a lot of raw vegans act

People often call me out for eating the birthday cake at a party when there is no other food and I am hungry. Does it contribute, in any way, to more demand for birthday cake? My grandma doesn't understand veganism (I've explained it for +7 years now) and instead of discussing it with her too much and her being confused, I let it be. People usually raise bees for the honey and considering the decline of wild bees due to pesticides and urbanization of the environment, raising bees is a very very good thing.
Removing honey generally doesn't harm hives and hives can even become "honey bound," requiring the hive to move altogether as there's no longer space to lay eggs.
It is a nuanced issue and Erin is quite unreasonable to insist *no* vegans eat honey.

Thats not neccesarily true. A lot of beekeeping does damage to the enviroment (w certain pesticides for instance) and als o sometimes uses cruel or exploitative practices like clipping the wings of the queen bee. There's plenty of non-harmful beekeeping (look for local small-beekeing-byuisnesses and traditional beekeeping) but it bothers me to consistently see this misinfo being spread that all beekeeping is ethical when in reality a lot of it is bad for both the bees and the enviroment.

Brandon is plant-based and shouldn't have been attacked for it, Erin is a vegan because the essence of veganism is based on a moral philosophy. Former Taco Bell worker here, almost anything at Taco Bell can be made vegan and we only use egg in the breakfast wraps
as a vegan myself, i can promise that most of us strive to be as unlike erin as we possibly can in our day-to-day lives LOL. i myself went vegan when i was 16 for animal ethics reasons but i also think it’s important to remember that it can be scary for people to make the transition that initially seems so drastic when that’s just the way they were brought up. i don’t believe at all in judgement & guilt-tripping, but couldn’t recommend veganism to everyone enough, even if it takes the tiniest baby steps to get all the way there :)

For me the issue is that Erin sniffed out the most insecure person in it's veganism and that was Brandon, because he wasn't vegan for that long and then she just went to town on him. It's just sad to see people take a morally superior stance over people instead of encouraging them or being understanding. Sad.
She's the perfect example of why people have a bad opinion of vegans. When someone says they're vegan we think of someone exactly like her: militant, pushy, angry, lecturing, judgmental. You don't want to be around someone like that. You can't be yourself because they're constantly judging you. And it's even worse if you aren't vegan. So for someone like Brandon who is new to veganism, meeting someone like Erin has to be demoralizing and embarrassing. I can see why he was questioning himself. @@maryschlidt6693 Same, I’ve been vegan for a few years and haven’t met a single raw vegan irl in that time. I think it’s because in order to eat fully raw, you need an amount of money and privilege that a lot of people will just never have. The cheapest and longest lasting vegan foods are things like dried beans and rice bought in bulk. Fresh produce is expensive and goes bad fast so you have to go shopping several days a week. Most people can’t afford that and don’t have enough free time to make salads and smoothies for every meal 🫠 and coming from that level of privilege can definitely make a person out of touch with reality, thus the bizarre way a lot of raw vegans act

Erin is really giving the rest of us a bad name. She is so hostile and judgmental when the rest of us are just doing our best and define our own boundaries. For example when Mallewi (denim jacket guy) said he still wore leather he's had for years. That might not technically be vegan but it's sure as shit more durable and ethical than throwing it in the garbage and buying some bullshit "vegan leather" from Shein. Erin does not care about that. She cares about being right and being better than people.
Right? I’ve been vegan for 10 years, and while I don’t advocate for leather products.. buying vintage or antique leather products doesn’t contribute to the current supply and demand of animal cruelty nowadays. So there’s no harm in it. Like you said. The vintage pieces, or pieces we already owned before we stopped using animal products would be in the landfill.

People often call me out for eating the birthday cake at a party when there is no other food and I am hungry. Does it contribute, in any way, to more demand for birthday cake? No. Would the people have brought it anyway? Yes. (but I understand when people say that it's not vegan!)
When I bring stuff to parties, it's always vegan. My grandma doesn't understand veganism (I've explained it for +7 years now) and instead of discussing it with her too much and her being confused, I let it be. I try to focus on her trying her best and her caring so much that she still makes food for me and sometimes I'll drop the lil "oh, erm, that is not vegan technically" and she's like: o___o (out of confusion)
I have a vegan friend that literally got wildly angry at me because I was happy to be able to drive a car. It has been a dream of mine for +10 years and it was an emotional process for me because I used to drive in the car with my dad a lot ... anyway, I was shoked to the core how angry he got at me for "not caring about the environment" and he said "you wouldn't be happy about driving a car if you knew how bad it was." ... it was ... so shocking and sad, honestly. It contributes nothing but hate. I now own a car just to experience it once in my life how it is, I don't even know if I'll drive it often or how long I'll keep it for. But, yeah, I am the devil and the sole reason for climate change.
When I am on my death bed, I want to be able to say that most of my life has been vegan and that's it. There is no such thing as a 100% life without cruelty agains living things (including children i.e. child slavery/work) under this capitalism anyway. The only thing we can do is try our best and not strive for perfection while hurting ourselves or others. I am always happy when my friends tell me that they eat less meat now and I'm like "you go gurlll" but that's it.
