In a perfect world sure we'd like to see weekly shows from Pete and co, but we as viewers have to understand that they have lives outside of Sea of Tranquility. When I was 13 my Dad took me to see Peices in a theater in Middletown NY, he would tell my Mom that we were seeing the latest monster movie and take me to these types of movies. Looking back i think he just wanted to see movies with some T&A and he used my love of monster movies as his excuse for going to them😊
It’s because of the wonderful “Monster’s Den” that I have a great interest in these films and thanks to this distinguished panel that I’ve been recommended such great movies, too numerous to mention. Thanks again fellas for your time and presence.
My top 5 favorite Italian giallo films include Monsters Den - favorite top 5 Italian niallo films: 1. Suspiria - Dario Argento, 2. Tenebre - Dario Argento, 3. Profondo Rosso - Dario Argento, 4. Blood and Black Lace - Mario Bava and 5. The House With Laughing Windows - Puppy Avati. Looking forward to the picks tonight. Hope one of my favorite bands, Goblin, is mentioned by the panel on some of the classic Argento films.
Got up and watched this episode at 600am here in New Jersey. I’ve learned a ton, very entertaining, I’m unfamiliar with many of these movies, but you 4️⃣wet my whistle” to dig in deeper. Thx Craig/ KING/ Davy/ PETE 👍💯
Some cool picks by everyone. Usually there's one person I'm not quite in line with - not personal, it can be a different person each time - but this week? EVERYONE picked a fave!
The girl who knew too much, What have they done to your daughters?, The perfume of the lady in black, The pyjama girl case, Your vice is a locked room and only I have the key. Not an Italian film but The house that screamed from '70 totally feels like a giallo, the story is pretty much Suspiria in the 19th century.
Dear chaps, I am not a Giallo expert, however, while looking for a "Poirot with a twist" I stumbled across "The Bloodstained Butterfly" (Una farfalla con le ali insanguinate) from 1971. I do not know where this fits on the "Spectrum of Awesomeness" but I would like to mention a few observations (without giving away any spoilers): 1 - I would swear that the film of the killer "in action" had a different gender to the actual killer. 2 - Strangely a lot of the plot was moved forward through the court case. 3 - The killer confessed and I had to watch it again to try and understand it ("But there was...?" "But what about...?''') 4 - The cops did not do much. 5 - There was a running joke about the cops drinking coffee...which I just did not understand....was it comic relief? Interesting. The film stars Helmut Berger. I found this great quote about him "Except for Helmut Berger, there are no interesting women today." - Billy Wilder, referring to Berger's drag performance as Marlene Dietrich's The Blue Angel in The Damned By the way, I read that giallo ("yellow") derives from a series of crime-mystery pulp novels. If that is not true then it should be true. Keep up the good work chaps.
It is indeed true. Very similiar to us saying pulp fiction (which...we don't now as everyone thinks we mean the movie!) - the novels were published with these yellow covers, a bit like how Penguin classics were in those orange covers. I mentioned here that Massimo Dallamano who directed my pick What Have They Done To Solange was the cinematographer on the first two Man With No Name westerns with Leone/Eastwood. Well, DuccioTessari who wrote and directed Blood Stained Butterfly, also wrote Fistful Of Dollars. He also directed the wonderful Ringo films (the westerns..not the Beatle!) Butterfly is a really tight film. It's absolutely a brilliant giallo and honestly, deserves to be in this conversation so thanks! Arrow released a STACKED bluray of it from a 4K master in the UK and US. And like I said about titles being ripped off....it led to Bloodstained Shadow!
my all-time fave giallo is Torso. also love Delirium (1972), The Case of the Bloody Iris & Strip Nude for Your Killer. an interesting one that i don't think was mentioned is French Sex Murders (1972). it features a Humphrey Bogart lookalike detective. it's a weird one.
My top 5 non bava/argento etc: (no particular order): 1: Torso, 2: Nightmare beach (great fun 1989 with an amazing soundtrack!), What have you done to Solange, Amsterdamned (me being dutch this is a fun one), Night School (staring the great Rachel Ward).
Spasmo by Umberto Lenzi. The Church by Michele Soavi. And an American Giallo ( I believe it is) Don't Look Now starring Donald Sutherland. The Night Evelyn Came out of the Grave. And a hidden gem by Fulci - The House of Clocks. Shudder has a Giallo category also.
Edwige was in one more gialli after Strip Nude... she also appeared in Phantom of Death (1987). On the subject...did anyone else notice her cameo in Hostel 2??
Profondo Russo has such a "killer" soundtrack with Goblin...how funky are those guys! Wow! I know Goblin did the soundtrack for several films...they are relatively unknown it seems in the US.
Very glad you guys left Argento, Fulci, and Bava out. It's better to hear about some of the lesser known ones. God knows there are a whole lot of them out there and it's useful to get some good recommendations.
One that needs a North American release is Pupi Avati's House with the laughing windows another rare countryside giallo. As for Fulci, Perversion Story does not get talked about enough.
Craig and Chris both just saw Laughing Windows and didn't love it, I believe. Eli Roth thinks it's one of the best gialli and the BFI showed it last year as one of the best examples of the genre. It's not on bluray anywhere worldwide which is a sin. A Pupi Avati boxset from Arrow or Severin would sell like hotcakes. Cheers.
@@DavysFlicks Craig and I liked it, but didn't love it. But it was also movie #4 of an all day 5 movie marathon, so sometimes that can skew a viewing experience!
My top 5 (without Bava, Argento or Fulci) would be 1.The Fifth Cord (1971,Luigi Bazzoni) 2.Short Night of Glass Dolls (1971,Aldo Lado) 3.Autopsy (1975,Armando Crispino) 4.Spasmo (1974,Umberto Lenzi) 5.The Case of the Scorpion's Tale (1971,Sergio Martino) A shout out to art house giallo Death Laid An Egg (1968,Giulio Questi), a truly bizarre film!
From the giallo films that I have seen, I liked The New York Ripper (1982), Murder Rock (1984), Tenebrae (1982), A Bay of Blood (1971), and The House On The Edge Of The Park (1980). Great giallo films!
By the way, I apologize for bending the rules. I picked my favorite giallo. It’s hard to avoid discussing Bava, Argento, and Fulci in giallo films! Only my last pick would be legitimate on here. Pete, I will definitely watch Sergio Martino’s giallo films. I can tell that he did a lot them! Thanks.
Great episode I was especially pleased you chose top go with a deeper dive rather than having Argento and Bava dominating (great as they are) although I have 90% of the picks there were a couple I haven't seen so will be checking out. One I thought Pete would bring up but didn't make the cut is Puzzle which is well worth checking out for any Giallo fan.
As good a way to spend an hour and a bit as watching most of these gialli. I bow to your superior knowledge when it comes to the picks but let me tell my Italian anecdote: Spent a fortnight railcarding Italy as a student around 1980 and kept seeing lots of cinemas with lurid posters and the word 'Oggi' pasted on. 'Hmm', we thought, 'must be kinda like Phwoar! indicating very spicy films indeed' (Davy will understand our confusion). Eventually the one of us with a phrase-book found out 'Oggi' means 'Today'. Luckily our choice was still well worthwhile with 2.7 metric tonnes of boobs.
