    I’m also working on a kit. My great grandfather recently passed and we found his service stuff, including his jacket and medals. Of course the jacket is absurdly large on me so I went to a nearby army surplus and got a jacket and pants my size (they made literally every size you can think of back then)

    • @VerageAirsoft
      @VerageAirsoft  2 роки тому +23

      That's really nice to make a kit like that. If a kit has some personal touch it makes it more special. Honoring your great grandfather like that is nice.
      Now the bigger shirts should be OK for a kit because when they were in the field, clothing was dropped and you just had to be lucky if it was in your size. That's also the reason why you see pictures with people without tags on the jacket.

    I was in the 1st Cav in Vietnam '68-'69. The Cav did not issue the boonie hat (Hat, Jungle). We were not allowed wear them even if acquired by other means.

    • @VerageAirsoft
      @VerageAirsoft  Рік тому +10

      That's indeed the info we got from different people. The boonie hat was something special. When we went to events we had a special letter that was send to a unit (not 1st Cav) that they were not following the grooming standard. We displayed that letter in front of our base. This gave us a bit of freedom to use different things.
      I like comments like this, because it's not easy to know and find what was allowed in every unit. You can find pictures, but you're never sure if it's about that specific unit or timeframe.
      Thank you

    Great kit. I have Vietnam issue gear I’ve collected over the years when it was more available. I love to wear my jungle utilities, I got my web gear put together and hanging up where I can view it every day. I wear my bush (boonie) hat almost every day during the warm months. Field jacket in cool weather. People don’t realize it but field jackets were worn in the Vietnam highlands, cooler wetter weather during their winter monsoon season. Great video.

    Realistically you don’t really need the m56 buttpack, as most guys would have been using a rucksack with a pack frame, and a buttpack would just get in the way. You can actually run around in a belt with the pouches laid out as is in this video, just without the buttpack. Also in terms of name tapes and uniform insignia, due to the nature of the flimsiness of the uniforms the men would often go through uniforms weekly, so it was not as common to actually have any rank patches or unit insignia sewn onto replacements. As for the m1956 lbe, you don’t really need the whole kit with all the pouches. A lot of guys later would just have a belt with like 5 canteens on it and they would wear their bandoliers to carry ammo instead, and they would not wear suspenders with it either, mostly for comfort. REMEMBER to stuff your pockets! Canned food, cleaning kit, cigs, socks, you name it. Use your pockets as a dump pouch, use them for bbs, just don’t leave the, empty.
    As for helmets or headgear, while some troops would not wear a helmet, most did, like 90% did. Pretty much all the pictures of men on patrol wore helmets. This was more for morale and a sense of safety than anything, same reason for why pretty much every picture of vets had two or more bandoliers.

    • @VerageAirsoft
      @VerageAirsoft  2 роки тому +3

      Damn, thanks for this reply. This is interesting to talk about.
      The reason I carry the buttpack, it's personal prefference. I like how it looks and mostly I don't carry a backpack. So that buttpack gives me some storage space for the short day events. But you're totally right, in most cases the buttpack was not used.
      The personal setup, or at least the option to do that, is awesome on this kit. It's up to you what you want to use on what occasion. The mag pouches are handy to story all kind of little things, up to my smartphone (yes I know :D). Bandoleers are a bitch :D
      Stuffing the pockets, that's a really good point, I did not mention that in the video. But yes, use the pockets. Well, one of my pockets is ripped, I keep it like that because of the look. But the other one are used to put a lot of small items. My deadrag is also in a cargo pocket.
      The nametags, you're right again. It's not needed to have them their and there was also a friend that had clothes that were to big and he cut them to length. That was a story he read about clothing being dropped in certain sizes, but there was not always the right size for everyone. Funny details.
      While a helmet is cool and correct to wear, mine is a cheap one and hurts my head because of the bad clips inside of it. I'll find a way to make that better and wear it the next event. :P
      Again, thanks for the awesome reply!

      The Osprey book on US & Allied equipment which was written by a vet, states that essentially the helmets were a bitch, hot, heavy, restricted vision & hearing, and that boonie hats were far more popular, for the above reasons.

    • @shockwave6213
      @shockwave6213 3 місяці тому

      For urban ops or instances where artillery is expected, a helmet is the way to go, but in a jungle/woodland patrol environment, the boonie hat is your best friend for both camouflage and sun protection. They can also enhance your hearing is angled right. 99.9% of the time, the helmet isn't going to stop rifle rounds under 400 meters/yards, since their primary role is to stop shrapnel.

    I don’t know if someone in the comments have already made this suggestion. A company called Rothco makes a G.I style jungle boot, both all black and the classic Vietnam era green and black color. The boots are replicas but appearance wise look solid. They do come with various sizes and are relatively inexpensive. I used to own a pair that were a size 12 myself, cost me about $40 USD with some change. If you’re looking to use the green and black ones for your kit, so you don’t have to use your authentic 1966 pair, I’d recommend them. Just a fair warning they are a bit of a pain to break in. They’ll require a bit of usage but it’s mainly the leather like material they use. All in all your gear looks great, a fine job.

    True Spec makes fine repro rip stop jungle fatigues. I like my Asian Tiger Stripe jungle fatigues. None were ever issued to US forces, but a soldier could have a set made by a local tailor.
    When I was in, ( draftee '72-74) they were transitioning to nylon web gear. We were issued fanny packs, but never rucksacks.
    My first issue of jungle fatigues had all patches installed. Any other sets were plain. We were not allowed to display rank, unit, or name. Most of the time, our fatigues were so far gone after a few patrols that we were issued new ones instead of washing our old ones.

    I know they had satchel charges in WWII (with TNT I believe). I served in the Marine Corps (more recently) and still have a couple of satchel charge bags that used to contain a number of 1 1/4 [lb] sticks of C4 plastic explosives and tagents (blasting caps pre crimped on sections of det cord for linking satchels together for detonation). Anyway I’m very confident that the type of satchel charge canvas bag is exactly what was being used in Vietnam. Same colors, fabrics, stitching, dimensions, etc since it’s a standard that hasn’t changed. Anyway look into this bag. Very very simple but bombproof design. Utilizes ties for closure. Handles designed to allow you to throw the bag into a bunker stitched along sides. It’s a great unique bag that infantryman (or any MOS) would have adapted for a GP bag. Similar to a repurposed claymore bag. Which I also used in Iraq once emptied and is exactly the same as those issued in the 60’s 70’s (I believe). Careful going to an airport however because the explosive “residue” is still very much in the fabric of a satchel charge bag. Lol cheers

    • @VerageAirsoft
      @VerageAirsoft  6 місяців тому

      No worries, I'm still active. :P
      The insignia is a mix of different things. Because of the reenactment team I was in we decided to look trough the names that actually served in vietnam. We looked up the information of that specific person and because of that, learn more about the specific situation of a single person instead of the usual big stories that we read in all the books. The person specific isignia is chosen like that. The rank isignia is chosen on my place in the reenactment team. We had a small group of leading people and most of the people had the private or PFC rank to make the group as accurate as possible to portrait a unit.
      Some people chose not to wear any insignia because that is also happened when clothing was dropped in the field to replace broken one. There are a few good books about vietnam uniforms and insignia 'uniforms of the vietnam war'.
      We also were lucky that one of our guys had a crazy amount of knowledge of this and helped most of us to put them in the right place and chose the correct insignia.

      The reason I have a rank on it is because we played in an vietnam reenactment airsoft team. So we had some kind of structure within the team. Mostly the oldest members had some kind of a rank. We were around 20 people and we had a Sergeant, a gunnery Seargeant and a corporal. All the others were PFC or just private. Ooh also a few spec4s. We had one LT, but he went to a different country and we never had another one. We always said he got lost and we were waiting untill he found his way back. The name tags are mostly from people that were KIA. We did research about that person and found a lot of interesting information.
