OK SO: humitas are a main dish Empanadas de pino are main dish Ensalada chilena is what we eat as a side Sopaipillas are made out of pumkin and you eat them alone or with chancaca which is a syrup Mote con huesillo is a desert we eat during our independence weekend. Pastel de choclo and humitas are made differently depending on what region you are from, if you're from the north its sweet while the south is salty...same goes for the empanada..

Sopaipilla fact: we usually eat sopaipillas when it rains (you can eat it anytime, but if it's raining it means you basically HAVE to eat sopaipillas) it's also one of the most popular street food, and you can eat it with pebre, mustard, ketchup, mayo (yes, we like mayo) chancaca, manjar (dulce de leche) and basically anything you want

I'm Chilean and I live in Germany for eleven years. Our Independence Day is in September so every year I make sure I prepare a bunch of empanadas along with pebre (you missed that one in the video, like someone said, it is like pico de gallo and it's hot). Cooking pastel de choclo is worth it but it's a lot of work lol. I usually prepare the pino (the mix of matched meat and chopped onions) the day before, and the following day I do the corn mix and cook it all together. Sometimes I meet up with some other Chileans here to celebrate our Independence Day, but not always is possible because, different than in our country where most of the second to the third week of September is red in the calendar, in the rest of the world they're just normal working days and so not everybody can meet up. But my Dutch husband absolutely loves our food and he's the first one to get all hyped up as we approach September in order for us to cook some empanadas and pastel de choclo. If any of you feel curious about our food and want to give it a try, make sure to try it with a good Chilean wine, empanadas and a carmenere just belong together. It makes me feel closer to home. Omg!! I've been waiting for this so much. Some people put pebre on their sopaipillas, which is a chili sauce made similar to “pico de gallo“. You should also try "terremoto", which is a sweet alcohol beverage with pineapple ice cream, among other ingredients, that is bomb! Once you get up after a couple of glasses you feel the earth moving, aka terremoto. Loved the video!!

I am Arab, but since I was child, my big brother used to buy me clothes from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. I used to know only those three nations in Latin America along with Canada and Mexico. They are my dreamlands, I hope I visited those places in the far South.

He have food for the summer and food for the winter. What could be nicer than drinking a cold mote con huesillos with 30°C outside. And on a rainy day, nothing is better than some warm sopaipillas with pebre (tomato, cilantro, onion,condiments,etc.). I LOVE MY COUNTRY! Maybe Chile is forgotten some times when it comes to Latino communities, but we still are and we are proud of it!
Mexicans have sopapillas too! But according to my neighbor, they're called something else. 🤷🏻♀️(at my house, we pair it with honey or powdered sugar.)
The best part of all these dishes is the family gathering... for Humitas and Pastel de Choclo usually several family members gather to help cook and eat... because you have to buy or have a lot of corncobs, then peel them (you need strength to do it), extract the grains, grind them and mix them with milk, basil, cook the meat and/or chicken (for the Pastel de choclo), and a lot of things. This usually happens one or two times during summer time. For empanadas, the family gathering is quite mandatory because it happens during national holidays, same as Mote con Huesillo. Sopaipillas, those are made during winter. Here, first rainy days of the year you automatically start craving for sopaipillas, that always come with the acompanying pebre, and sometimes with Navegao (hot red wine with orange), and the whole family and guests enjoy at dinner. During hot sunny summer days, there is always a carrito that serves cool and refreshing Mote con Huesillo. Of course, you can find most of these foods through all the year now (except for mote con huesillo I think), that's why I think the best part is the family reunion, because you make memories and learn team work and help each other, and learn the ways your grandma and mother cook :)

About effing time! A chileno living in Queens here... There's a good spot in valley stream named San Antonio bakery. They got amazing typical Chilean food there. I suggest el Barros Luco sandwhich.
