  • We spent one of our days in Santiago exploring the city to find out what Chilean foods are all about, and to find the best types of foods and street food in Santiago, Chile.
    To start things off we headed to Central Market (Mercado Central de Santiago) where we came across a place called Emporio Zunino which is rumoured to have some of the best empanadas in Santiago. The line up was long but quick and we bought an empanada de queso (cheese) and empanada de pino (with meat).
    Next up we headed out on a hunt for a cookie we’d heard a lot about but at first we had a difficult time finding one. Finally we found cookie, called alfajores, which is filled with dolce de leche- it was a bit different than we expected as it also had chocolate on top.
    After that we again found something we’d been having a hard time finding, a drink called mote con huesillo. It’s a peach drink served with a dried peach that has been cooked in sugar with husked wheat at the bottom. Definitely the strangest thing we tried all day.
    Next on our list was a hot dog, referred to as a completo. On the hot dog you’ll find avocado, tomatoes and mayonnaise.
    Lastly we made our way to a rooftop bar (at the Singular Hotel) with incredible views, where we wanted to try a Chilean Pisco Sour. We’d had one previously in Lima.
    ABOUT CHILEAN FOOD
    Chilean gastronomy stems mainly from the combination of traditional Spanish cuisine, Chilean Indigenous Mapuche culture and local ingredients, with later important influences from other European cuisines, particularly from Germany, Italy and France. The food tradition and recipes in Chile are notable for the variety of flavours and ingredients, with the country’s diverse geography and climate hosting a wide range of agricultural produce, fruits and vegetables. The long coastline and the peoples' relationship with the Pacific Ocean add an immense array of seafood products to Chilean cuisine, with the country's waters home to unique species of fish, molluscs, crustaceans and algae, thanks to the oxygen-rich water carried in by the Humboldt Current. Chile is also one of the world’s largest producers of wine and many Chilean recipes are enhanced and accompanied by local wines.

    Pisco, is an ancient Peruvian drink made with grapes. It is like saying champagne, which it is from France, but other countries also make their own versions. There is a town in southern Peru called Pisco. The word Pisco, means bird, in the Quechua language. Pisco is of a fairly clear color, kind of looks like vodka.

    "Pino" is the base to cook the meat that it can be ground or minced. Onions, paprika, salt and oil most of the time. Some people add other ingredients. But that's the base mainly for the empanada to have caramelized onions on the inside and not that raw. If you feel a raw onion it's not a good empanada because "se te repite" (or "it repeats yourself") in your esophagus and could make gastric reflux. I prefer ground meat instead of minced. Such a great video you guys. Hope you had a wonderful time in my city.

"leaves dow".. the cheese dip fry empanada with regular dow is better...and that hot dog...you eat is called " Italiano"..like you said..beacuase of the Italian flag colour....the real completo, which is the bench mark.. is a hotdog that has sour cabbage and mayo..next time try Humitas...it's the supreme Tamale..with no meat.. cheers y saludos

    @sebastian-jc9zg 5 років тому +4

    Dulce de leche is milk with sugar boiled for x time (really idk what time is(i'm Chilean so my english it's really bad sorry xD)), the ¨alfajor¨ is really a mendocino (it's kind of alfajor). After the mendocino you tried ¨mote con huesillo¨, consist in ¨mote¨ and huesillo (really?, yes xD) mote is wheat grains drieds, its cooked boiling it, then the ¨huesillo¨ is dry peach, its cooked boiling it with sugar, because of that the flavor is sweet, then you mix the huesillo and his juice with the mote after casting the water(i hope you understand me). the ¨completo¨ its a ¨creation¨ of a Chilean who was working in USA then come back to Chile nearly to 90´s and adapt the hotdog to the Chilean palate, the ¨original¨ consist in pan copihue or pan de completo, sausage or ¨vienesa¨, mayo, chucrut(its fermented cabbage), tomato, avocado(aguacate, palta is avocado, guacamole isn´t avocado).
    good bye, and enjoy all of Chile, taste asado de cordero, curanto o pulmay, pastel de choclo, cebiche, mariscal, pie de limón, pajaritos, more and more, go to south of Chile, ask in the comments if someone could guide you, I wish you the best of the trips and to return safely to your home.
