Darren went on a 10 hour interstate trip, to a strange place, a trip that was supposed to be both highly important and highly secret. Darren goes on this trip without bringing a map or written directions, choosing instead to rely solely on his cellphone GPS. Darren does not have any kind of plan b should his cellphone lose reception, or runs out of battery, or otherwise becomes unusable... He has to turn that cellphone on because he got lost, and turning on that cellphone led to his eventual arrest. All because he didn't think to bring a map. For someone who seems to base his whole identity on being former military, it doesn't sound like he was a very good soldier. 🤦
He also chose not to do ANY independent research on his own, before choosing to execute a total stranger. He just listened to Jennifer and that's it. Someone like that is incredibly dangerous. While I agree that he was manipulated, and his sentence is quite long, he did choose to commit murder in TEXAS of all places. What did expect would happen?? He's lucky he didn't get the death penalty. That's what poor Jaime got, through no fault of his own. RIP to Jaime.💜

Did you miss the part where he had severe cognitive impairments and had suffered traumatic brain injuries? He wasn’t an idiot, he was severely damaged person who was manipulated by a mental health professional that knew exactly which buttons to press.
Obviously it’s easy to judge but it’s not like he was a non-disabled person without extensive trauma and who was an avid technology user.
It wasn’t really a case of him being stupid, he was manipulated into fully trusting someone he knew in real life. It’s not like Catfish where they don’t know the people IRL.
Ideally he should have contacted her family even if he was scared of calling the police, but he didn’t and he’s paying for his choice to kill rather than alert her family.
The prosecution was spinning things as negatively as possible, but the one thing I very much agree with them about is that he committed premeditated murder. There was no way it fell under self defence.
I think he should have received a lesser sentence but he certainly belongs in prison. He was a victim of manipulation but Jamie was the only innocent party.

I feel like Darren got too harsh a punishment. She basically manipulated a mentally disabled man into murder for hire. When the trial was questioning the logic of his actions, yes, his logic makes no sense for a mentally sound and nondisabled person. But he's not a nondisabled person, and that heavily influenced his actions and the steps he believed were logical to take. He should be in a psychiatric facility, not prison -- everything about him screams "mentally unwell" and it's not like prison is going to make him any better

SPOILER ALERT - Listen first, read later!! I'd never heard of this case before and listened to both parts today whilst cooking (my usual weekend 'treat'). What a freaking wild ride! I'm stunned at the level of evil, and horrified that Jennifer was in the trusted and caring occupation of a therapist as well as being a mother!! I was just about rooting for ol' Darrin towards the end but I think ultimately he got his just desserts as well. Clearly Jennifer has some kind of mental and/or personality disorder whilst also being very high functioning. The fact that she wanted a previous husband dead shows a nasty pattern. I'm always astounded how these kinds of people successfully manage to dupe so many whilst simultaneously causing untold chaos and hurt. I hope she rots in hell. I feel terribly sad for her daughter, although potentially Jennifer's true self may not have been so well disguised behind closed doors. Who knows? Another great podcast thank you! 🤩

The very second I heard about Jamie messaging Darren, I immediately assumed that Jennifer was doing it all and setting Darren up. I will find out if I was correct.
Your explanation of ptsd and tbi was one of the best descriptions I've ever heard.
She knew exactly what she was doing. The simple fact that she had tried almost the exact same scheme with one of her previous husbands shows what she was capable of. She should have most definitely received a much longer sentence than she did.
The fact that she was a "professional" therapist who manipulated someone with such severe mental issues should have allowed her to receive additional years to her sentence. In my opinion she should have been charged with some form of medical malpractice. If only he had actually been her patient, maybe things would have ended differently.

Good story. I was married for 30 years to a man who was totally kind, honest and morally superior. It was all an act. He was so good at manipulation as it turns out it’s because he is a psychopath. I don’t know if I figured it out by becoming his target, or because his alcoholism stripped his defensive cover. My therapist told me you can’t expect a person to be anything, even if you’ve known them forever.

I feel like they enjoyed this on some level. Normal people would leave their home before letting their spouse force them into these bizarre sexual abuse situations. This all seems like a sick role play thing between Darren & Jennifer

Even though darren was tricked, i still think he shouldn't be out of prison, he showed that under the right conditions he can be manipulated into harming someone, that's not something normal people are able to do, so he and his mastermind should get life without parole and everything they own should go to the family of the victim.

I really have to wonder whether the jury considered Darren’s diminished capacity by way of disability quite thoroughly enough. I really, really feel for him, even knowing he took an innocent man’s life.
He wasn’t playing with a full deck and got manipulated.
Not saying he should be totally absolved of responsibility either, but 62 years is absolutely excessive. Might as just well have given him life too, and he’s simply not as culpable for it all as she is. Whatever you think of him, it’s undeniable that he was exploited.

This is a great story that teaches that people with psychiatric disorders like PTSD or any condition,we are mostly victims,we are the vulnerable ,like her husband....
U see TV films and lawyers teach u that PTSD or schizophrenia is a danger to normal people but normal people are tend to be the attackers
We suffer inside, yes ,we are difficult to live with ,but in the end we tend to harm only our selfs no others,by suicide , restless behaviour,we use everything,to ease the pain inside of us, not to do You harm
Rip to any victims,my greetings to any human being that suffers from a mental illness,i am bilingual, hopefully u understand.....
    Don't be afraid of us

Now, I think that these stories may be narrated by a computer. Why else would there be a T in front of the names? Not always, sometimes Jennifer is pronounced correctly. Other times it's T-Jennifer. Same with the others in the story.
I think that I will stick to other channels
