For years, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid counted among the few gaming franchises that withstood the test of time across several console generations. Its 1998 debut introduced players to the wonders of stealth-action gameplay and subsequent entries elevated the genre further, laying the groundwork for the advent of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and the like. Unfortunately, turmoil within the company meant the Konami-published saga didn’t have the opportunity to conclude as strong as it started. And its last entry, the universally panned Metal Gear Survive, managed to leave somewhat of a blemish on Metal Gear’s otherwise immaculate legacy.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, the last mainline instalment, launched in 2015 with a less than satisfactory ending, effectively leaving a bad taste in the mouths of countless MGS faithful. As a spinoff adventure that took the series in a completely different direction, Metal Gear Survive hardly had a chance to succeed on even the basest level. The survival action title wasn’t what fans wanted, especially given the absence of series creator Hideo Kojima.
Still, the experience offered a fair share of intrigue and fun; yet, by virtue of the alternate universe and zombie-centric premise, Survive struggled to retain the winning charms of its namesake. If anything, Survive’s drastic departure from its progenitors proved that slapping the title of a beloved brand on a new idea wasn’t enough to revive said brand. In this particular case, such a move may have led to the stealth property’s premature demise.
This is the tragedy of Metal Gear Survive.

Always remember we only lost episode 51, chapter 3, a possible sequel for Rising and a game about The Boss for this and pachinko machines.
My God, i didn't even knew we lost THAT much. Now, I want Konami to give the rights to Kojima even more. Though that will never happen.
a game about the boss would've been interesting
Definitely worth it
@@lazerktulu2693 Tbh I think Kojima is happy to do something other than MGS, he did it for 20 years and now he can do other things...
A game about The Boss would be lame imo. It's better to leave that period of MGS lore as lore. And Chapter 3 is literally just a post game, it's not what everyone convinced themselves it was. The only actual cut content for MGSV was mission 51 and the ability to control the Battle Gear (cut for being too OP).
People need to accept the game was released largely as intended, the "unfinished" feeling was Kojima being meta so the players could feel a "phantom pain". This was confirmed by the writer of the movelisation, who also helped write the game, and Death Stranding, so it's as close to Kojima saying it himself as possible.
MGS fans reaction to MG survive: "Why are we still here? Just to suffer?

@PogChamp yes, you have to pay for a extra save slot

Too complicated. I actually had to THINK about what you were referencing. :D :D
So Konami purposefully neutered their production staff for the game out of paranoia that they'd "Make another Kojima."
Wow, just wow Konami.
I know right. I don't even know what to say to that.
Disgusting. This proves there's a narcissist at the helm who hates Kojima and wanted to take over the company. I'm going with BASTARD YOTA, though CUNNING YUJI is quite specific toward a takeover attempt. Either way, this was a backstabbing of creative minds and their legacy. In a pursuit of coin, the death of a legendary developer.
well it was made by kojima so it should be a kojima game. what is the ego problem in this lmao
@@ShivaM-dc4xe I guess Konami got pissy that more people talked about Kojima than the company itself. So obviously the best idea was to shoot what little of a reputation they had in the foot, amazing.

I doubt it would have been complete had Kojima been given more time, but I'm positive it would have been *more* complete if Konami weren't trying to shove him out the door and make one last quick buck off his work.
@@Lucifronz I'm pretty sure that's the case. Konami are eager to kick him out of the company ASAP before he managed to finish MGSV. Because when I played the game and the game ended I just sort of... What? Knowing that the ending seems awkward and definitely unfinished

The restructure at Konami explains the changes in the gaming industry. Instead of people with visions, who are passionate about the art, games and franchise, leadership consists now of people who care about monetization schemes.

If they wanted to do a spin-off they should’ve done something with the whole building up your own mercenary company. I really enjoyed that part of mgs 5 and felt like they could’ve done more with it.
Doing more isn't something Konami has any need to do anymore. They got taken over by a sleazeball who wanted to grease his pockets.
imho, it would be more acceptable and easy for konami just to launch a battle royale MGS game (which i admit would be interesting considering how good the movement system in the fox engine) instead of releasing stale idea like a zombie survival game
Portable Ops and Peace Walker are the games that let you do that
XD The system of the "rescue" and "building" of survive is better than mgs v, more close to peace walker than mgs v.
@@Krystalmyth i'm quite sure that Konami is now just a front for the yakuza.
It was really just a quick zombie cash grab by Konami, honestly way more effort was put into this video than Konami put into Metal Gear Survive lol
I'd prefer Resident Evil over Metal Gear survive. at least with RE it makes more sense that way than throwing in zombies for a stealth action game.
People forget that Kojima said, if Rising got a Sequel, it'd be about Nanomachine Zombies, before he was let go.
Then, Konami made a Game about Nanomachine Zombies, completely missing the Point (Or the Punchline)
Thats probably the reason you use a stick
Yup I remember this except it was going to have frank yager
I really like how the guy sounds like the How It's made narrator. You've earned a subscription.
Steve Petitt has such a silky voice!!! Absolutely no offence meant to the geezer but his voice in these videos help me to get to sleep sometimes!

9:06 small correction - a "Konami Sport Club" is basically a gym/fitness center chain in Japan, with excersize equipment etc (think 24Hour Fitness/Planet Fitness/Gold's Gym/etc), has nothing to do with actual sports. I saw one in Tenjin, Fukuoka in 2019 when I saw the Konami logo and wanted to know what it was - no games or pachinko, just a fitness gym.
Let us never forget that they expected use to pay for a save slot.
Actually that's false, it was about paid slots for new characters, there wasn't any point in making more anyway since there was chapter select.
@@shooter5769 It’s horse shit either way. Monster Hunter World/Rise didn’t charge me 10 dollars if I wanted to make a new character. Neither does Destiny 2 and these are are big games!
@@Numbingbird because the save slots in survive did not even work like traditional save slots like it would for those games
You shared inventory and gear from all saves, meaning all end game gear you got, can be brought to a starter character
all the resource farms you build. are shared aswell meaning if you had 4 characters, (which they gave you the currency for free anyway by logging in, but nobody cared about that or didnt mention it on purpose to make it seem worse than it was...)
you would have more resources to pull from, more attempts for weeklies since there was a weekly base defense game for endgame stuff, and an expanded shared inventory.
i know people love saying "They sold save slots" cause it makes it easy to hate, but it there was way more to it than that. Enough to completly excuse them from doing it? maybe not, but definitely overblown if you actually research it.
@@sgr_sean Okay... If that's the case then they shouldn't have even offered the additional save slots for purchase to begin with.
But they did... But no you're completely right let's just forgive them because they certainly only had the consumers best interests in mind when attempting to sell those additional save slots to farm additional resources and rewards that have nothing of real value. They certainly weren't looking to make as much profit as they possibly could. Everyone who disagrees is just a hater hating on a good gaming corporation who only care for profits.
Yeah that COMPLETELY justifies selling save slots.

There's two endings in this game, and one of them shows that all of Metal Gear Survive was nothing but a dream, and you're simply a soldier wandering the desert in Afghanistan, just like those side missions in MGS5 to unlock old Mother Base members, that ending is canon to me.
From zombie survival game turned into some sort of psycho game, lol.
But at least, that made whole sense
trust me we all wish this was a dream
from what I know the wandering soldier ending happens if the player chooses to escape the survive world with the wormgate
and when it happens his memories get scrambled
he becomes one of the lost and confused soldiers from motherbase that Snake can find and re-recruit in MGS5
hinting that the other confused soldiers didn't survive 9 years wandering in a daze but Snake just found other that returned with a wormgate a little before
possibly all the other dazed soldiers that returned died in their confusion
makes us think that maybe when Kojima don't wanted a zombie game he wanted to make something about them, and the staff working on survive repurposed them and gave a explanation to how they were alive in random parts of the map in MGS5
Everyone knew what this was going to be without Kojima.
Many MG games were done without Kojima as a director/writer before Survive... Metal gear ghost babel, acid 1-2, portable ops, rising...

There is actually some evidence to suggest Kojima may have had knowledge of Survive while still at Konami and perhaps was even involved in it's early planning, it had origins as a MGSV DLC, and some mechanics and concepts between Survive and Death Stranding overlap.

Mgs was always a comedy
This game needed to seriously have an offline mode.
It also needed to be it's own IP instead of spitefully hanging off the Metal Gear IP when public perception of Konami was a it's all time worst.
Thats the thing Konami needs that title for people to buy the game. Which kinda backfired to Konami since the way Konami handled Kojima and his team in a bad way which make most MGS fans lost trust with Konami. Ended with bad sales too. I agree that Konami needs to leave MGS series alone and create a new IP to gain consumer trust. They can touch the MGS series maybe sometime in the future with proper budget and hire passionate creators who respect the original vision of MGS. But yeah, Konami direction nowadays are mostly on Pachinko machines.
I actually was very surprised how they handled the concept. There was actually an already established plot for Survive in MGSV. A squad that was away from the motherbase on some OPS while the XOF blew the place up. Suddenly the communication is dead, no information, no support coming and you and your squadmates are stranded on enemy territory. You need to establish a temporary base of operations and find out what happened to the motherbase. After you learn that there is no support coming and there is no place for you to return to you can start forming a small private military and work as a mercenary to survive in war-torn part of the world. Why zombies?
Using MGS3 as a template the tools are there to make a MGS survival game where you forage for supplies behind enemy lines
Metal Gear Survive is not a tragedy,
It's a comedy.
xD all of mgs lore is a huge comedy XD

People seem to forget that Kojima didn't really want to make MGS IV (which I loved but understood his feelings), but was pressured into doing so, and really, REALLY didn't want to make V. Like many others, it was a game I watched the countdown clock for months after it went live, and as launch day arrived, prayed I'd survive an impending heart attack waiting for it to unlock. Then, the disappointment began, and blow by blow, it seemed that Kojima was intent on killing his franchise even if Konami wasn't hell bent on doing it faster. Anyone who played it (and the rest of the series previously) could tell his heart wasn't in it 100%, but that didn't stop or excuse the tirade of BS that Konami put him and his team through, especially removing his name from the game right before release. That's some next-level fuckery that I still haven't forgotten.
It wasn't helped by the fact that the team spent the first 3 years of development just building the Fox engine, then had a year to make a game with it under insurmountable pressure.
A metal gear game without Kojima is like a car without an engine, it will still have doors, wheels and seats to sit on but it will not go anywhere.
@2 Corinthians 4:7-11 hilarious 😆🤣😂😄 👍
Kojima kills me. "MGS isn't about zombies, but IF i were to add them, this is what they'd look like."
The fantastic Fox Engine being locked away is the real tragedy, IMO. It's a pretty impressive piece of work. It would be like if Capcom shelved their RE Engine after we saw how optimized and powerful it was in RE7.
I mean Capcom did even worse with the Pentha Rei engine. Making a new gen engine and literally only using it on a canceled game.
As much i love FOX, it's still a 11 years old engine now. So when the next MG game is done, they might replace it.

even tho it failed, I think it gave us a window into a universe lore that isn't as alternative to the source material as we might think. as an idea and a game as a whole, it may have flopped internationally, but the script and themes tell us there is more to the story of metal gear solid than just a pseudo-historical tactical espionage saga.

The begin cutscenes were really well done, made me even hyped to play the game till the damn portal openend up. I thought this game was about you building a new PF and taking revenge but nope it was a zombie game that no one asked for.
imagine if it was that, and the main character was mosquito, culminating in that final mission, the raid on mother base, how you end is dependant in your mercenary score and hero rating, lowest gets you shot with a sniper rifle, low you get shot in a shootout with venom, med gets you yeeted over the railing, high gets you shot with a fulton rocket and highest has a montage of your men dissapearing one by one in the background, until you're the only one left with no hostages, you get held up from behind and interrogated before the fulton pack gets put on you and you fly high into the sky
Even the iconic artist distance himself from the franchise. Man..
as someone who made alot of videos documenting and covering the game's mechanics. it was an interesting ride but brutal as hell for any new players. The gameplay loop was ok as well but what really killed it for me was the serious lack of content. after year 1 of playing the game the devs just fucked off and we didnt get anything new that was substantial. I along with a small handful of people kept the game alive for that year. helping each other, making guides and providing resources to any newer players that wanted to give the game a shot.
I remember the announcement of this Joke of a game, when I first saw I was like RIP MGS Franchise.
I was open to giving it a chance. Then heard about the base you can dump resources into and the microtransactions and I immediately passed on it because it was pretty clear they were going to use the resource grind to encourage microtransaction purchases.
I remember when this was announced. A large majority of fans were like "Fuck Konami". Every so often someone wouldn't shit on the game but there wasn't many of them.

Metal gear survive has a small online fan base that still plays the game to this day, I bought it on sale a while back and it still had hardcore players who play it all the time. It definitely shouldn’t be called a MGS game though.
Ok I guess I'll watch another piece of metal gear content on UA-cam
As said in the conclusion: I wish just ANYONE had given it a chance. It wasn't a bad idea, it's just that everything around it fell apart and kicked it in the shins.
The only bad thing about the game is that it waited too long to be fun. You have to be very patient with the game in the first 10 hours for it to start to become fun and playful. The game is totally fun only when you finish its main storyline. The endgame is what the game should've been from the start.
Love this video, narration is good! Maybe rise and fall of Earthbound ( Mothers series)? :)
Oh boy, as a Metal Gear fan who VERY much enjoyed this game I just wanna share my (balanced) feelings towards this game, since I have found it nearly impossible to find a more 'objective' review of this game.
First of all, if you liked MGSV's gameplay, controls, and the glorious look and feel of the FOX Engine you will feel right at home here. Yes, it's not a Kojima game, but people tend to forget that he does not make these game on his own and he has always had an amazingly talented team working for him (and Konami) that pushed the technical aspects of videogames each console generation and defined what 'stealth action' gameplay is. These developers probably never wanted the next Metal Gear game to be a 'zombie survival' game either but they did what they could. And to be fair, this title has almost nothing to do with the Metal Gear title aside from the visual design. It's certainly not an amazing game but I really enjoyed the progression in the single player and the co-op was decent as well, and at higher difficulties it actually required map knowledge and teamwork. I'd personally rate it a very enjoyable 7.5/10.
Now here's the (understandable) issue; the game was absolutely destroyed in reviews when it launched. Of the many reviews I watched it was very obvious from the gameplay I saw that not a single reviewer played past the first 3 to 5 hours based on their character progression and loadout. I can imagine not wanting to give 'Metal Gear but with zombies by evil Pachinkonami' a chance, and let's say they DID enjoy the game, they would not dare revealing even the slightest affection for this title.
I'd say if you enjoyed MGS5 and like survival games with an enticing gameplay loop and a decent challenge, give it a shot since it's quite cheap nowadays. Try finding some reviews of people who actually played it as well.
"It may revive this franchise" - please no, let it die. MGS4 was already a hate letter to the fans who kept wanting more and more and more. The story is complete, it came full circle, albeit with a lot of retconning, but still.
mgs4 was my favourite. what was the problem with that one?
@@Skubbes The old tired solid snake, the gruff voice, the literal killing off of characters. He wanted to hand off MGS 2 to a team already, but was brought back because it was initially a catastrophe of a project (hence the story in MGS1 of passing things down to other generations, as he wanted to do with MGS2).
As a longtime MGS fan and a zombie game fan I think atleast half the hate around MG: Survive is more about the hate towards Konami than hate towards the game. Things they'd be more forgivable about for other games they attack MG:S for.
I know what you're saying but it still isn't a good game. I legitimately don't know a single person who played and liked it.
awesome documentary (as usual)! can you guys do a documentary on the rise and fall of Vietcong? it's a Vietnam War-era franchise that, as far as i know, has only two main installments in the franchise; "Vietcong" (2003) and "Vietcong 2" (2005) plus an expansion; "Vietcong: Purple Haze" (2004) and a DLC; "Vietcong: Red Dawn" (year unknown)! there is definitely a story to be told here! thank you for your time! ^_^
12:00 that sheep is an easter egg referring to Kazohira's "Why are we still here, just to suffer" line .
